Official online co-op for the PC version of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent is no longer available. Ubisoft’s current listing says that online features are unsupported and that multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional. The original PC manual did include both Internet and Local Area Network (LAN) co-op challenges, but that historical documentation does not prove that either route works on a modern computer. Direct LAN play is therefore an experiment with no current official compatibility guarantee, not a supported solution.
You can still install and launch the PC game with a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, as required by the current store listing. That activation requirement is separate from multiplayer availability: buying or activating the game does not restore the discontinued online service.

The short answer
If you want to join a friend over the Internet, there is no supported method. Ubisoft’s current game page states: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” That statement covers the game’s official multiplayer and co-op functionality.
LAN is different in network design but not in support status. The original PC manual instructed players to run Versus or co-op challenges over either the Internet or a LAN. Ubisoft has not published a current compatibility statement confirming that a private LAN session still works on modern Windows systems. You may investigate a direct home-network connection if you already own the game, but it should be treated as unverified and may fail because of the game’s age, installation behavior, network discovery, or missing service components.

What the original PC edition included
Release and mode structure
Ubisoft lists the PC release date as September 1, 2006. The PC manual’s Multiplayer Menu section described two network paths: Internet play through the DemonWare service and play over a Local Area Network. It specifically referred to “Versus or Co-op Challenges,” which are multiplayer challenge modes rather than a promise that the entire single-player campaign can be played cooperatively.
This distinction matters when looking at old guides or screenshots. A manual from the release period documents what the software was designed to offer at the time. It is not a modern test report, a current server-status notice, or proof that the game can negotiate a session on a current operating system.
Internet play and LAN play were separate routes
| Route | What the original manual documented | Current position |
|---|---|---|
| Internet | Co-op challenges through the DemonWare service | Not supported; Ubisoft says multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional |
| LAN | Co-op challenges on a local network | Current compatibility is not established by Ubisoft’s available information |
| Single-player campaign | Not identified by the manual quote as a co-op campaign | Separate from the discontinued multiplayer service |
Do not assume that a working single-player installation implies working multiplayer. The network mode can depend on components and discovery behavior that the solo game never uses.

Why the usual online instructions no longer work
Older walkthroughs commonly tell players to select Internet multiplayer, sign in to the original service, create a lobby, and invite a friend. Those instructions describe the 2006-era service, not the current product. Ubisoft’s present status notice supersedes those steps for official online play.
A virtual-LAN application, port-forwarding rule, or compatibility setting cannot be presented as a confirmed replacement. No current official server, supported community server, or reliable workaround has been established for this PC edition. Such tools can make two computers appear to share a private network, but they cannot recreate a discontinued matchmaking or authentication service by themselves.
What you need to install the PC game
Ubisoft’s current PC store listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect for activation. Those are purchase and launch prerequisites, not multiplayer prerequisites. Before buying or reinstalling, make sure you understand the following:

- You need access to the Ubisoft account that owns the PC license.
- Ubisoft Connect must be installed so the game can be activated and launched through the current PC distribution system.
- The store listing’s requirement does not promise access to DemonWare or any other historical multiplayer backend.
- A disc-era manual may describe DVD installation and menu options that do not match the current digital activation flow.
If your only reason for buying the game is official co-op, do not purchase it expecting that feature to return. The documented current status says it will not function.

The following procedure does not guarantee success. It is a controlled way to determine whether your particular installation can expose and join a local session without confusing a local-network test with unsupported Internet play.
- Install and activate the PC edition. Use the current Ubisoft Connect requirement shown by the store listing. Confirm that the game starts in single-player before investigating networking.
- Use two computers on the same physical network. Connect both systems to the same home router, preferably by Ethernet while testing. Avoid beginning with a remote friend, a hotel network, or a virtual-LAN overlay; those add variables that can hide the actual result.
- Launch the game on both machines and inspect the multiplayer area. The historical manual refers to Versus and Co-op Challenges. Current menus may differ, be absent, or fail during initialization. Record the exact wording of any error instead of assuming that a missing menu is a firewall problem.
- Allow the game through the operating system firewall only when prompted. Create a private-network exception for the game executable if your firewall asks. Do not disable the firewall globally, and remove a temporary exception if you abandon the test.
- Have one player create a LAN session. Choose the LAN option only if the installed game actually presents one. The other player should use the corresponding LAN browser or join command. These labels come from the original design and may not appear in a current installation.
- Test discovery before changing router settings. If the joining computer cannot see the host, verify that both machines show the same local network profile and can reach each other on the home network. A failed discovery test does not prove that the game’s LAN code is permanently broken; it only shows that this installation did not establish a session.
- Stop if the game requests an unavailable online service. A prompt for DemonWare, matchmaking, or an obsolete sign-in service indicates that the path is trying to use the discontinued Internet route rather than a confirmed direct-LAN connection.
Keep expectations narrow: a successful menu launch or visible host would demonstrate only that your setup can reach that point. It would not turn LAN into an officially supported feature.

LAN troubleshooting, with the limits made clear
The multiplayer menu is missing
Check that you installed the PC edition rather than a different platform release and that the game has completed activation. The historical manual cannot guarantee that every modern distribution package exposes the same menu. If single-player works but no multiplayer entry exists, there is no documented official repair that restores it.
The host does not appear on the second computer
- Confirm both computers are on the same router and not isolated guest networks.
- Check that the firewall exception applies to the actual game executable and to the private network profile.
- Temporarily disconnect other network adapters, such as unused VPN or virtual-machine interfaces, so the game has fewer possible routes to select.
- Restart both game instances after changing network permissions.
These are general local-network diagnostics, not proof that the game supports modern LAN discovery. If the host remains invisible, record the failure and avoid treating a virtual-LAN service as a guaranteed fix.

The game opens a service or sign-in error
That usually means the selected path depends on an online component. Ubisoft’s current status statement says those online features are no longer supported. Repeating account sign-ins, changing passwords, or forwarding ports will not reactivate a retired service.

The game launches but the session disconnects
Separate a connection failure from a game-version mismatch. Both installations should come from compatible PC releases, and each player should start from a clean, fully activated installation. If a session drops after joining, there is no current Ubisoft compatibility matrix identifying a supported patch or configuration that resolves it. Do not assume that a successful lobby proves the full co-op challenge will remain playable.
Can a virtual LAN or community patch restore co-op?
The available official information does not verify a supported unofficial server, community patch, or virtual-LAN configuration for this title. A virtual LAN can alter how computers address one another, but it does not replace the original Internet service or guarantee that the game will use a direct local route. Community files may also introduce security, licensing, or compatibility risks.
If you investigate an unofficial method independently, treat it as an unverified third-party experiment. Use malware scanning, keep backups of saves and configuration files, and do not provide your Ubisoft credentials to an unknown launcher or server. None of those precautions changes the official status: Ubisoft does not currently support the game’s multiplayer or co-op modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Your goal | What the documented information supports | Buying advice |
|---|---|---|
| Play co-op over the Internet | Not available through Ubisoft’s supported service | Do not buy it for this purpose |
| Try a same-home-network LAN session | Listed in the original manual, but current operation is unverified | Buy only if you also want the solo game and accept that LAN may fail |
| Play the single-player game | Separate from the discontinued multiplayer status | The PC edition can be activated through the account and Ubisoft Connect requirements shown by the store |
The most important distinction is between “the feature existed” and “the feature is supported now.” The manual establishes the first. Ubisoft’s current listing establishes the second: official online multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional.
What is and is not confirmed
- Confirmed historically: the PC manual described Versus and co-op challenges over Internet or LAN and named DemonWare for Internet play.
- Confirmed currently: Ubisoft says online features are no longer supported and multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.
- Required for PC activation: a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, according to the current store listing.
- Not confirmed: that direct LAN sessions work on current Windows installations.
- Not confirmed: that a virtual-LAN tool, community server, or patch restores the original service.
- Not implied: that console editions have the same PC co-op implementation.
Therefore, there is no current, supported set of steps that lets two PC players use official online co-op. A same-network experiment is the only historically documented avenue that is not directly described as an Internet service, and its present-day compatibility remains unknown.
