Sombra’s “rework” refers to more than one kit. Blizzard’s October 2023 rework made her a more committed, active Damage hero; an October 2024 revision changed that kit again. The latest official material described here is a Season 5 2026 move to Support, with Hack and Virus removed. This guide explains how to play the 2023 kit because its mechanics are documented in detail, then clarifies what that advice does—and does not—mean for the later versions.
What changed in Sombra’s 2023 rework?
Blizzard’s October 2023 rework changed Sombra from a hero who could set up a remote escape into one who had to make more deliberate, active commitments during a fight. The design goals were to make her commit more when engaging, increase the active feel of her abilities, and retain her Hacker identity. The new mechanics below describe the 2023 Damage kit, not the current Support kit.

- Stealth became passive: it activated after 3.5 seconds without shooting, using a damaging ability, or taking damage. Its movement-speed bonus fell from 60% to 45%.
- Translocator became a quick teleport: after being thrown, it teleported Sombra 0.25 seconds later or on impact with the environment. Teleporting reduced Stealth’s passive cooldown.
- Virus was added: the projectile dealt damage over time, with that damage applied more quickly to hacked targets.
- Hacking an enemy hero ended Stealth: using Hack on a hero exposed Sombra rather than letting her remain concealed through the action.
Blizzard’s October 2023 patch notes and Hero Design Team account describe these changes. They are historical mechanics; do not assume they apply to later versions.

Think of the 2023 kit as a sequence of decisions: choose whether to reveal yourself, decide where to teleport, then manage the time before passive Stealth can return. The mechanics reward planning an engagement rather than relying on a beacon left behind for a guaranteed escape.

Choose the target and exit before you commit
Use Stealth to approach and assess the fight, then choose a target and a Translocator destination before starting the attack. Once you shoot, use a damaging ability, or take damage, the passive Stealth conditions are interrupted. Hack on an enemy hero also ends Stealth. In practice, that means you should treat the opening ability as the start of an exposed engagement, not as a free action that leaves you safely hidden.
Decide when Hack is worth revealing yourself
Hack can set up Virus to deal its damage over time more quickly against the hacked target, but using Hack on an enemy hero breaks Stealth. Consider whether that target and moment justify giving up concealment: the interaction is most relevant when you can follow through on the pressure, rather than hacking simply because the ability is available. The documented mechanics do not establish one universally optimal target or sequence.

Use Virus as pressure, not as a guaranteed finish
Virus provides damage over time, and the effect is faster against hacked targets. That makes the Hack interaction a meaningful choice, but it does not establish that every engagement should begin with Hack. Decide based on whether the target is worth exposing yourself to pressure and whether you can continue the engagement after the initial attack.

Throw Translocator to move now
The 2023 Translocator was not a marker to leave behind and activate later: throwing it initiated a quick teleport, as did hitting the environment. Pick a destination that helps you reposition or leave the engagement before you throw. Because teleporting also reduced Stealth’s passive cooldown, it could contribute to returning to concealment sooner, but it was not the old-style delayed escape plan.

Reset the engagement instead of forcing a fixed combo
If the target, angle, or timing stops making sense, prioritize a safe reposition over extending an unfavorable fight. After your attack, Stealth requires the stated three-second-plus delay without shooting, using a damaging ability, or taking damage; a new hit or attack interrupts those conditions. The rework’s mechanics support a committed engagement followed by a deliberate reset, not a single prescribed combo for every map, rank, or matchup.
How the October 2024 revision changed that advice
Blizzard revised the Damage kit again on October 21, 2024. Those changes superseded parts of the 2023 play pattern, so the earlier instructions should not be treated as a description of that revision either.

- Stealth stopped being passive and instead activated with Translocator for five seconds.
- Taking damage revealed Sombra for one second rather than ending Stealth.
- Hack no longer ended Stealth, though it revealed Sombra.
- Hack’s ability-lockout duration was reduced from 1.5 to 1.0 seconds.
- Translocator’s cooldown increased from five to seven seconds.
- Opportunist returned, granting 20% weapon damage against hacked targets and wall visibility for critically injured enemies.
These values describe the dated October 2024 revision only. They should not be carried forward as current values without checking the live version.

Not in Blizzard’s later Season 5 2026 description: Sombra moved from Damage to Support. In that version, Hack and Virus were removed, so the 2023 Damage-kit tactics above do not translate into a current ability rotation.
- Hotfix heals an ally over time and can be used while invisible without immediately breaking Stealth.
- Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies and weakens enemies.
- Conspirator reveals enemies with fully charged ultimates.
Those descriptions establish the broad functions, not the complete current values, controls, perk interactions, or best tactical sequence. Blizzard’s indexed official hero-page material has also presented conflicting snapshots, including an older Damage kit. For a current match, use the live in-game ability text and the latest patch notes for your region rather than assuming an older page or guide is current.
Which Sombra guide should you follow?
Check the role and ability names shown in your game before applying a guide. If you see the 2023 Damage kit, use the commitment-and-reposition guidance above. If you see the October 2024 revision, remember that its Stealth and Hack interactions differ. If you see the Season 5 2026 Support kit, look for advice specifically written for Hotfix, Cyberspace, and Conspirator; a Hack-and-Virus combo guide is for an older version.
