Rust is a compact, square Core multiplayer map in Modern Warfare III’s Urzikstan oilfields, built around a central Tower. The Tower offers commanding sight lines, but it is not the objective: use the structures and routes at ground level to move, take flags and points, and avoid being pinned in the open. Activision’s Rust map guide calls the combat frenetic, while noting it does not always have to be.
How Rust is laid out
Activision places Rust in the Urzikstan desert oilfields and describes it as a small, square map dominated by a central Tower. Its named areas are useful for orienting yourself and making callouts:

- Pipe and Trucks: the main spawn areas.
- Oil Pump: a secondary elevated position southwest of the Tower.
- Office Buildings: another named section of the map.
- Tower: the central structure, with exposed upper sight lines and routes around its base.
The Tower can see across much of the map, but the foundation and crawl spaces provide ways to break that view. The southwest Oil Pump is another elevated angle; if the Tower threatens that position, dropping beneath it can help you disengage.
How to move around the Tower safely
Crossing the open center is risky when an enemy has the Tower. Activision’s map guide recommends Battle Rage for open-ground crossings, crouching through crawl spaces at the Tower’s base, and sprinting to substantial cover if a Tower sniper pins you down. These are publisher tips, not guarantees of safety.

- Use the Tower foundation and nearby structures to break sight lines rather than repeatedly crossing open ground.
- Consider holding near the Blue Containers, Trucks, or the underside of the Pipe instead of constantly challenging the Tower. A quieter position can be more useful than a risky climb.
- If you do climb, be ready for close-range resistance on the ladder. The guide recommends a handgun or melee secondary for that encounter.
- Use the southwest Oil Pump as an alternative elevated position, not as a substitute for moving to ground objectives.
Rust strategies by game mode
Domination
All three flags are at ground level around the Tower. Capture them promptly and use routes through the Tower’s base to approach or rotate between objectives. A teammate on the Tower can provide support, but spending the whole match fighting for the top does not capture flags.
Hardpoint
There are five Hardpoints; four are at ground level and the second is elevated over the Oil Pump. Expect grenade pressure around the inner three points. Use the space beneath the Tower to break enemy sight lines and reposition for a flank, while keeping enough players focused on holding the active point.

Search & Destroy
Attackers spawning at Trucks are slightly closer to B than A. A is exposed and tends to favor mid-range engagements; B is confined and favors close-quarters strength. The Tower may offer a strong angle, but do not let the fight for it pull attention away from the bomb site and objective.

Cutthroat is a 3v3v3 mode. On Rust, quick engagements can be tempting, but rushing carelessly risks being caught between the other teams. Balance aggression with patience, and watch for the overtime flag if a round reaches a stalemate.

Other Core modes
Modern Warfare III’s multiplayer guide lists Core modes including Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, and Control, alongside Domination, Search & Destroy, and Hardpoint. Playlist availability can change, so the list does not establish which modes are currently rotating on Rust. See Activision’s Modern Warfare III multiplayer guide for its mode descriptions.

Use the map’s named areas—Pipe, Trucks, Oil Pump, Office Buildings, and Tower—to communicate where an opponent is or where your team is moving. On this compact map, a clear location callout helps teammates respond without everyone needing to contest the same sight line.
