RuneScape: Dragonwilds supports online co-op and crossplay across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. For a normal session, one player starts a world, enables crossplay when necessary, then shares the invite code shown in the pause menu. Friends enter that code in the world browser. Jagex describes four players as the standard co-op group; its separate dedicated-server guide documents support for up to six players.
A dedicated server is the better choice when the world must remain available without its original host, or when the group needs more than the standard four-player arrangement. It also requires more administration: a supported 64-bit operating system, adequate memory, network port forwarding in some home setups, exact world-name discovery and matching game versions.

The simplest way to play with friends
For most groups, use a host-run co-op world. The host starts the world, sets its multiplayer options and remains responsible for launching it when the group wants to play. This avoids server software and network administration.

1. Start the world and set crossplay
When everyone is playing on the same platform, the host can use the normal world-start process. If players are on different platforms, the host must enable crossplay in the world settings each time the world starts. Jagex says this is a host-controlled setting, so a friend joining from another platform cannot turn it on for someone else’s world.

Crossplay was announced for the full release on September 15, 2026. Jagex’s launch announcement says it is supported across platforms, and the official FAQ names PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 among the launch platforms. See the full-release announcement and official FAQ for the platform list and release information.
2. Find the invite code
Once the world is running, open the in-game pause menu. The host’s invite code is displayed there. Share the code with the friends who should join. Treat it as a session credential: send it only to the people you want in the world and generate or use a new session code if the game presents one after restarting.
3. Enter the code in the world browser
Friends open the world browser and enter the host’s invite code. The code-based route is the direct way to join a host-run world. Jagex’s team specifically confirms that invite codes are entered from the world browser and shown in the pause menu. Menu names and the exact location of controls can differ slightly between PC and console interfaces, so use the current on-screen labels rather than assuming a PC button prompt applies to a controller.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Confirm the host platform when browsing
Jagex says server lists display the host platform. That information is useful when several worlds have similar names or when a friend is checking whether the listed world belongs to the expected host. If the world does not appear, use the invite-code field instead of relying only on the public list.
How do I invite friends to my Dragonwilds world?
Start the world, open the pause menu and copy the displayed invite code. Send it to your group through a private message, then have each player open the world browser and enter the code. The host does not need to publish a public server name for this route. If the world is restarted, check the pause menu again and resend the currently displayed code rather than assuming an earlier code remains valid.
JagexDoom, responding for the development team in the team AMA, summarized the process this way: “Server lists will display the host platform and crossplay can be enabled in the world settings each time you start the world. You can now join worlds through invite codes – they can be entered in the world browser screen, and are shown in the in game pause menu.” The wording confirms the host-side setting and the two locations involved, but it is not a platform-specific button walkthrough.
Which platforms can play together?
Jagex’s full-launch materials describe crossplay for the supported PC and console platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Crossplay is not an automatic property of every session; the host has to enable it in world settings whenever the world starts. If the host leaves crossplay disabled, players on a different platform should not expect the invite code to admit them.
The September 15, 2026 date is the announced full-release date, so platform support and capacity details should be checked again after major patches. The official launch statement says, “No matter what platform you play on, we’ve got Crossplay!” Attribute that promise to the RuneScape team announcement rather than treating it as a guarantee that every future platform or mode will be included.

Steam and the Jagex Launcher are separate PC platforms
The FAQ treats Steam and the Jagex Launcher as separate PC platforms. Buying the Steam version does not, by itself, grant access through the Jagex Launcher. Decide which PC storefront each player will use before troubleshooting an invite, and do not assume that owning the game in one launcher transfers ownership to the other. The Jagex FAQ is the authoritative reference for that access distinction.
Steam lists the game as single-player and online co-op, which describes the available modes rather than a promise that every world supports an unlimited number of players. The Steam listing is available at RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Steam.
Do you need special hardware or accessories?
No official source identifies a particular headset, controller, gaming PC, router or other accessory as required for co-op. Use the platform’s normal supported input and network equipment, but do not treat a third-party accessory as an official multiplayer requirement. For a self-hosted dedicated server, the documented requirements concern the operating system, memory, software and network reachability rather than a named brand of hardware.

How many people can play together?
There are two different player-count figures in Jagex’s documentation, and they apply to different arrangements.
| Arrangement | Published player-count information | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Standard host-run co-op | Four players described as the standard co-op group by the Jagex team | The normal target for a small friend group using a world started by one of the players |
| Dedicated server | Up to six players documented in Jagex’s dedicated-server guide; the capacity note was stated as supported in version 0.11 in March 2026 | A larger, separately administered server option; it should not be read as the cap for every ordinary host-run session |
The development team has described increasing the ordinary co-op limit as a future goal. Therefore, do not interpret the dedicated-server figure as proof that a regular, host-run world can always accept six players. Check the current documentation after major updates because capacities can change.
Standard co-op versus a dedicated server
| Option | Advantages | Costs and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard co-op world | Fastest setup; invite code; no server installation; suitable for a group of up to the standard four-player arrangement | The host must start the world; it is not the documented six-player dedicated-server configuration |
| Dedicated server | Persistent world, host independence and documented support for up to six players | Requires installation, memory, networking, backups, version maintenance and either home hosting or a paid provider |
This is a practical distinction, not two names for the same mode. A dedicated server does not automatically make a regular host-run world accept six players, and an invite-code world does not require you to operate a separate server process.
When a dedicated server makes sense
A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s ordinary game session. It is useful when the world should persist between play sessions, when the original host is not always available, or when the group needs the documented six-player capacity. The trade-off is setup and maintenance that the simple invite-code method does not require.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a standard co-op world when
- Your group is at or below the standard four-player arrangement.
- The same host can start the world whenever everyone wants to play.
- You want the least technical setup: start the world, enable crossplay if needed and share the invite code.
- You do not need the world to run while the host is offline.
Consider a dedicated server when
- Players need to enter the same persistent world at different times.
- Your group needs more than the standard four-player co-op arrangement, within the documented limit of up to six players.
- Someone in the group can maintain a server, or the group is prepared to pay a separate hosting provider after checking its current terms.
- You can keep the server and every client on compatible versions after updates and hotfixes.
Home hosting or a provider?
Jagex documents home hosting and names Shockbyte as a hosting partner. The same guide says its cloud-provider documentation is still being developed. That means provider pricing, regional availability, plan specifications, uptime and any affiliate eligibility must be checked separately at the time of purchase. Do not assume that a provider named in the guide has a particular current plan or discount.

Dedicated-server requirements
Jagex’s Dedicated Servers – How-to Guide documents the following baseline requirements and operating details.
| Item | Documented requirement or behavior |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Linux |
| Memory | 2 GB plus 1 GB per player |
| Examples from Jagex’s guide | 4 GB for two players; 8 GB for six players |
| Network port | UDP port 7777 initially; additional server instances increment the port |
| Software | The free “RuneScape: Dragonwilds – Dedicated Servers” Steam product |
| Discovery | Use the Public tab of the Worlds screen and enter the exact, case-sensitive world name |
| Save handling | The server loads the latest save file in its Savegames folder |
The memory figures are allocation guidance, not a performance benchmark. They do not establish a recommended processor, storage speed or internet bandwidth, and the published materials do not provide independent performance testing. Leave practical headroom for the operating system and other services rather than treating the minimum formula as a guarantee of smooth operation.
How to set up a dedicated server
1. Install the server software
Install the free Steam product named “RuneScape: Dragonwilds – Dedicated Servers.” Jagex also provides a SteamCMD app-update command in its official guide. Use the command exactly as shown in that guide instead of copying a command from an unrelated server tutorial, because application IDs and installation paths can change.
2. Select a supported host machine
Use a 64-bit Windows or Linux machine. Size memory using Jagex’s formula of 2 GB plus 1 GB for every connected player: the guide’s examples are 4 GB for two players and 8 GB for six. If the machine runs other services, reserve additional memory so those services do not compete with the game server.
3. Configure the listening port
The first server instance uses UDP port 7777. If you run additional instances, their ports increment. On a home connection, you may need to forward the relevant UDP port from the router to the server machine and permit it through the operating-system firewall. Some internet-service providers restrict inbound connections or use carrier-grade NAT, in which case ordinary port forwarding may not work. Ask the ISP whether inbound UDP forwarding is available before spending time on router rules.
4. Start the server and choose a distinctive world name
Give the world a name that friends can identify reliably. The public discovery process is case-sensitive: friends use the Public tab on the Worlds screen and enter the exact world name. Record capitalization, spaces and punctuation and share them exactly. A name that differs by one character can make a healthy server appear to be missing.
5. Keep versions aligned
The clients and server should run matching versions. Game updates and hotfixes can make a previously working combination differ, so update the server and clients together. If the server is visible but friends cannot connect after an update, check the version shown by the server installation and each player’s game before changing network settings.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. Move an existing local world carefully
Jagex explains how to copy an existing local save into the server’s Savegames folder. Make a backup before copying or replacing files. The dedicated server loads the latest save in that folder, so an incorrect copy can make the server open an older world or overwrite progress. Keep an untouched backup outside the active Savegames directory and label it with the date and game version.

Purchase and edition notes
Jagex’s FAQ describes planned Standard and Deluxe physical disc editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also says preorder listings appeared sporadically across retailers without identifying a preferred stockist. If you are buying a physical copy for a group member, verify the current listing, stock, region and edition directly with the retailer. A physical-edition listing is separate from the multiplayer instructions and does not change the invite-code or dedicated-server process.
Invite-code troubleshooting
The code is rejected or the world is not found
- Ask the host to confirm that the code was copied from the current pause menu after the latest world start.
- Have the host verify that crossplay is enabled if any participants use a different platform.
- Enter the code in the world browser, not in a general server-name search field.
- Check that every player is using a supported platform and a compatible game version.
- If the host restarted the world, request the new code rather than reusing an earlier one.
A friend can see the world but cannot join
Confirm the host platform shown in the server list and check whether the host enabled crossplay for this start of the world. On PC, verify that the joining player owns the game in the same storefront they are attempting to launch; Steam access and Jagex Launcher access are separate according to the FAQ. If the problem began after a patch, bring the client and host to the same version before investigating anything else.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dedicated-server troubleshooting
Friends cannot see a self-hosted server
- Confirm the server is running and listening on UDP 7777, or on the incremented port for a second instance.
- Check both the operating-system firewall and router forwarding rules.
- Verify that the ISP permits inbound connections; carrier-grade NAT can prevent home-hosted forwarding.
- Search from the Worlds screen’s Public tab using the exact, case-sensitive world name.
- Check that the server is not running a different game version after an update or hotfix.
The server opens the wrong progress
Stop the server, make a backup of the current files, then verify that the intended save is in the server’s Savegames folder. Because the server loads the latest save there, timestamps and duplicate files can affect which world opens. Do not delete the only copy while trying to correct the folder.

Compare the machine’s available memory with the documented formula of 2 GB plus 1 GB per player, then account for the operating system and other applications. The published numbers are sizing guidance; they do not guarantee a particular frame rate or connection quality.
A practical decision checklist
- Count the players who need to be online in the same world. Four or fewer normally points to standard co-op; a group of five or six should examine the dedicated-server option.
- Ask whether the world must remain available when the usual host is offline. If not, the invite-code method is simpler.
- Mark the platforms involved. Different platforms require the host to enable crossplay every time the world starts.
- For a dedicated server, confirm a 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, memory for the intended player count, UDP reachability and someone responsible for updates and backups.
- Decide how the world will be maintained after patches. A server that is not updated with the clients can become undiscoverable or refuse connections.
For a small group that plays at the same time, start with a host-run world and the pause-menu invite code. Move to a dedicated server when persistence, host independence or the documented six-player arrangement outweighs the additional networking and maintenance work.

How many players can join a normal co-op world?
The Jagex team describes four as the standard co-op group. That is separate from the dedicated-server guide’s documented support for up to six players.
Can six people play together?
Jagex documents up to six players for a dedicated server. Do not assume that a regular host-run session has the same limit; use the dedicated-server arrangement for the published six-player figure.
What does a Dragonwilds dedicated server require?
Jagex lists 64-bit Windows or Linux, 2 GB plus 1 GB of RAM per player, UDP port 7777 for the first instance, the free dedicated-server Steam product, backups and matching client/server versions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Check that the server is running, the correct UDP port is reachable through the firewall and router, the ISP permits inbound connections, and friends search the Public tab with the exact case-sensitive world name. Also compare game versions.
Is Steam access the same as Jagex Launcher access?
No. Jagex’s FAQ treats Steam and the Jagex Launcher as separate PC platforms. A Steam purchase does not automatically grant access through the Jagex Launcher.
Do I need a special headset, controller or router for co-op?
No specific accessory is identified as required by Jagex’s multiplayer materials. Dedicated-server hosting may require router and firewall configuration, but no particular brand or device is mandated.
The Bottom Line
For most groups, start a host-run world, enable crossplay when needed and share the pause-menu invite code. Choose a dedicated server when you need a persistent world, host independence or the documented six-player setup, and be prepared to manage RAM, UDP networking, saves and updates.
