To play RLCraft with friends, install the same RLCraft release on every Minecraft Java installation, then choose the connection method that fits your group. A host can open a world to LAN for friends in the same home network. For internet play or a world that should remain available when the host is offline, use the matching RLCraft server pack on a self-hosted or managed dedicated server.

RLCraft 2.9.x is built for Minecraft 1.12.2 and requires Forge 14.23.5.2860 (the project describes Forge 2860 as the required build). Allocate 3–4 GB of RAM to each client; the default 1 GB allocation is not enough for normal play.

What every player needs before joining

RLCraft multiplayer is not a drop-in match between arbitrary modded installations. Every participant must load the same game, modpack release, Forge environment, and configuration. A mismatch can produce missing-mod, registry, or connection errors before anyone reaches the world.

  • A legitimate Minecraft Java installation and a launcher that can start modded profiles.
  • The identical RLCraft release on every computer. Do not let one player update while the others remain on an older profile.
  • Minecraft 1.12.2 with the Forge build required by that RLCraft release. For RLCraft 2.9, the project requires Forge 14.23.5.2860; its wiki identifies that exact Forge version.
  • The same modpack configuration. Keep the mods and config folders aligned, and avoid adding or removing mods until everyone can connect reliably.
  • Enough memory for the client. The official guidance is 3–4 GB per client rather than the launcher’s default 1 GB.

RLCraft uses Minecraft Java rather than Bedrock. A Bedrock installation, a vanilla 1.12.2 profile, or a different Forge instance will not join an RLCraft world simply because the player has the same account.

Install the same RLCraft profile on every computer

CurseForge is the project’s recommended client installation route because it creates the modpack profile and its dependencies together. Repeat the same release selection on every player’s computer.

  1. Install and open the CurseForge app, then link the Minecraft game when prompted.
  2. Open Browse or Browse Modpacks, search for RLCraft, and open the official project entry.
  3. Choose the release your group intends to use and select Install. Do not allow different players to select “latest” at different times if the project has multiple 2.9.x files.
  4. After installation finishes, open the profile and select Play. Confirm that the launcher starts the RLCraft profile, not vanilla Minecraft or another Forge profile.
  5. In the launcher’s installation settings, raise the allocated memory to 3–4 GB. Leave enough RAM for Windows or macOS and other programs; assigning nearly all physical memory can cause its own crashes.
  6. Launch once, reach the title screen, and close the game. This creates the local files that you can compare if a later connection error identifies a configuration mismatch.

The project’s CurseForge instructions summarize the process as linking Minecraft, browsing modpacks, finding RLCraft, installing it, and clicking Play. That simple route is preferable to manually assembling a 1.12.2 mod list, because manual installs make it easier to omit a dependency or select a different file.

Choose the right multiplayer method

There are three practical choices. LAN is quickest but temporary. A self-hosted dedicated server gives you control and persistence but puts networking and maintenance on the host. Managed hosting removes much of that server administration in exchange for a recurring fee and dependence on the provider’s compatibility.

Method Setup effort Must the host stay in-game? Internet reachability Control over mods, backups, and settings Recurring cost Who handles problems?
Open to LAN Low; create or load a world and open it to LAN Yes. The world exists only while the host’s session remains open Same local network; not intended for friends outside the home without additional networking Host controls the local world, but there is no always-on server process No server fee; uses the host computer and home network Players troubleshoot the game and local network
Self-hosted dedicated server Moderate to high; install Java and Forge, configure files, and make the service reachable No. Friends can play while the server process is running, even when the host is not playing Can support internet players after firewall and router or other network configuration Highest control over backups, whitelist settings, commands, world files, and modpack configuration No hosting subscription, but the host supplies hardware, electricity, bandwidth, and administration The owner handles Java, updates, firewall or router settings, performance, and recovery
Managed hosting Usually lower than self-hosting; upload or select the matching server pack in a control panel No, while the hosted service is running The provider supplies a public address and network service Depends on the provider’s panel and file access; verify support for the exact RLCraft release Recurring price varies by provider and plan The owner handles game settings; the provider handles the underlying machine and support scope

Choose LAN for a household trial or occasional session. Choose a dedicated server when the world should continue between play sessions, when friends live elsewhere, or when you need scheduled backups and a whitelist. A managed service is convenient only after you confirm that it accepts the exact 1.12.2 RLCraft server pack and gives the group sufficient resources.

Method 1: Open an RLCraft world to LAN

LAN is the fastest way to test multiplayer when all players are connected to the same home network. It does not create a permanent server and does not, by itself, make the world reachable from the public internet.

  1. Have every player launch the identical RLCraft profile and reach the main menu.
  2. On the host computer, select Singleplayer and create a new world or load the existing RLCraft world.
  3. Press Esc to pause, choose Open to LAN, select the desired game mode and command setting, and start the LAN world.
  4. Each friend on the same local network opens Multiplayer. The advertised LAN world should appear automatically; select it and choose Join Server.
  5. Keep the host world open for the entire session. Closing the game, returning to the title screen, or losing the host computer’s network connection removes the LAN session.

If the world does not appear, verify that the computers are on the same network rather than one using a guest Wi-Fi network, mobile hotspot, or isolated VLAN. Temporarily check whether the host’s firewall is blocking Java, then create an explicit local-network rule if needed. A missing LAN listing does not prove that the modpack is wrong; it can be a network-discovery or firewall issue.

LAN is a session-sharing feature, not a way to leave a world running overnight. For friends outside the home or for persistent access, move the world to a reachable dedicated server instead of trying to make the host’s single-player session permanent.

Method 2: Self-host an RLCraft dedicated server

A dedicated server separates the world from the host’s in-game session. The computer running the server can remain in the world while the owner is absent, provided the server process and network remain available. RLCraft’s server pack must match the clients exactly.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

1. Download the matching server pack

From the RLCraft project’s CurseForge files, download the server pack for the same release installed by the players. For the documented 2.9.3 setup, the project lists RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip. Do not use a server pack from another RLCraft release and assume that the client will tolerate the difference.

2. Prepare the Java and Forge environment

The documented 2.9.3 server setup uses Java 8 and a compatible Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server. Check the server machine with java -version and install or select Java 8 if the system is using an incompatible runtime. Install the Forge server into a clean directory rather than mixing it with another Minecraft server.

3. Extract and initialize the server

  1. Make a dedicated folder for this RLCraft server and extract the matching server-pack ZIP into it.
  2. Run the Forge server’s generated launch script or command once. The first start creates the required files and normally stops or refuses to continue until the EULA is accepted.
  3. Read the EULA file, set the acceptance value to true if you agree to it, and start the server again.
  4. Wait for the console to report that the server has finished starting before attempting a connection.

4. Set the required command-block option

Stop the server cleanly, open server.properties, and set enable-command-block=true. The official RLCraft project warns that leaving command blocks disabled can prevent some structures from generating correctly and can result in missing villagers. Save the file and restart the server before generating or exploring the world.

5. Configure the world and administration basics

Use the server properties file and the server console to set the world name, difficulty, whitelist behavior, view distance, and other settings appropriate for your group. Keep the configuration aligned with the client pack; changing ordinary server rules is different from adding or removing mods. Before inviting everyone, create a backup of the server directory, especially the world folder and configuration files.

  • A GIFT FOR PLAYERS — Give Minecraft players Minecoins to spend on content in the in-game Marketplace.

6. Make the server reachable

For players on the same home network, give them the server machine’s local address and the configured port. For internet players, the server must be reachable through the host’s firewall and network configuration or through a managed service. Configure the router or equivalent gateway only if your network permits inbound connections, and give friends the public address together with the port when a non-default port is configured. Never publish an address that exposes unrelated services, and do not share administrative credentials.

7. Pre-generate terrain before the group explores

World generation is one of the heaviest moments for an RLCraft server. The server guide identifies pre-generation as part of the recommended setup. Generate the area you expect the group to use before the first large expedition, then back up the resulting world. This reduces the chance that several players moving in different directions will create simultaneous exploration spikes.

8. Give players the connection details

Once the console shows a ready server, send each player the address and port. They should select Multiplayer, choose Add Server if the entry is not already listed, enter the address, and connect with the same RLCraft profile used on the server. Keep the server console visible during the first joins so you can see authentication, missing-mod, or network errors as they occur.

Method 3: Use managed hosting for internet play

A managed Minecraft host can run the RLCraft server pack, provide a control panel, maintain a public address, and often offer automated backups. This is usually easier than configuring a home router, but it is not automatically compatible with every modpack.

  • Confirm support for Minecraft 1.12.2, the required Forge build, and the exact RLCraft release your group installed.
  • Verify that the plan allows the official RLCraft server-pack files rather than restricting uploads to a small approved list.
  • Check the included memory, CPU allocation, storage, backup schedule, server locations, player limits, and restoration process.
  • Ask whether you can edit server.properties, upload the mods and config folders, and set enable-command-block=true.
  • Confirm how the provider handles updates. An automatic modpack update can put the server on a different release from the clients.

Provider compatibility, pricing, and promotional availability change frequently, so treat a host’s current plan page and support response as the authority for those details. If the provider cannot confirm the exact release and Forge combination, do not upload a world that your group cannot restore elsewhere.

Memory and performance planning

The official RLCraft guidance is specific about clients: the default 1 GB allocation is not enough, and 3–4 GB is recommended. Allocate that amount in each player’s launcher profile, then leave operating-system memory available for the launcher, voice chat, browser, and graphics drivers.

Server memory has no universal “maximum player” number. Required resources vary with the number of players, view distance, loaded chunks, concurrent exploration, entity activity, storage speed, and whether the server is generating new terrain. A lightly used server may behave very differently from the same machine during a group expedition. Monitor the server console and system memory while players explore rather than selecting a capacity from a generic chart.

  • Pre-generate the intended play area to reduce first-exploration spikes.
  • Keep view distance reasonable for the hardware and reduce it if chunk loading causes repeated pauses.
  • Schedule backups when the server is quiet and retain more than one restore point.
  • Watch for a steadily growing memory footprint, long tick times, or console warnings after adding a mod or changing a setting.
  • Do not allocate every gigabyte on the machine to Java; the operating system and other services need headroom.

Troubleshoot the most common connection failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
“Missing mods,” registry mismatch, or a mod-list error The client and server use different RLCraft releases, Forge builds, or files Confirm the release name, Minecraft 1.12.2, and Forge 14.23.5.2860 requirement. Compare the mods and config folders with a known-working installation.
The launcher opens vanilla Minecraft The wrong installation or profile was selected Launch the RLCraft profile created by CurseForge and verify that the title screen and installed-mod list are from that profile.
The server is not listed or refuses the connection The process is not fully started, the address is wrong, or the port is blocked Wait for the ready message in the server console, copy the address carefully, include the configured port, and check the host firewall and router reachability.
Friends on the same home network cannot see a LAN world Network isolation, firewall blocking, or the host closed the session Confirm that everyone is on the same non-guest network, allow Java through the local firewall, and keep the host world open.
Structures generate incorrectly or villagers are absent Command blocks are disabled Stop the server and verify enable-command-block=true in server.properties, then restart before continuing world generation.
Players time out during exploration World generation or resource pressure is exceeding the server’s capacity Check memory and tick-time behavior, lower view distance if appropriate, pre-generate terrain, and avoid having everyone explore new regions simultaneously.
A player can join but is immediately disconnected Client configuration differs, the server is restarting, or the player’s local files are damaged Compare the player’s profile with a working client, reinstall the exact release if necessary, and inspect the server console at the moment of disconnect.

If a self-hosted server works locally but not for internet friends, the modpack is probably not the first thing to change. Test the network path: confirm the server is listening on the intended port, the host firewall allows it, the router forwards or exposes it as required, and the address given to outside players is the public address rather than a private LAN address.

Public servers and community help

The official RLCraft project directs players to its official Discord for public-server information and updates. Public server addresses, rules, player counts, and uptime can change without notice, so verify those details in the current community channels before joining. A public server may also run a modified configuration; check its required client files instead of assuming that every server labeled “RLCraft” uses your group’s release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to keep a private RLCraft world reliable

  • Record the exact RLCraft release and Forge build in a shared note so nobody updates by accident.
  • Back up the world before changing mods, configs, Java versions, or major server settings.
  • Use a whitelist for a private group and give operator privileges only to people who need them.
  • Stop the server cleanly before copying the world or replacing files; copying an active world can produce an unusable backup.
  • Test a backup on a separate copy before deleting older restore points.
  • When moving from LAN to a dedicated server, copy the world only after the server pack and client release have been matched.

For a same-network evening, LAN is enough. For an internet group, a matching dedicated server pack with correct Forge, command-block, network, and backup settings is the dependable path. Managed hosting can simplify the infrastructure, but the group still has to keep every client on the same RLCraft release.
