PS5: use the PS4 edition

How to install RDR2 on PS5

With a PS4 physical copy
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the PlayStation account you use for your games.
- Insert the PS4 Red Dead Redemption 2 package. Rockstar’s PS4 retail release contains two discs: a Play Disc and a Data Disc.

Disc considerations
A disc-based installation requires a console that can read the disc and normally requires the disc to remain available for ownership checks. If you have only a disc and are using hardware that cannot accept it, the disc cannot be used as a digital license; obtain a compatible digital entitlement instead.

They are not a promise that every future update will fit inside the same total. Patch sizes and download requirements can change, so read the live prompt on your console.
Why an internet connection is normally needed
Internet access is normally required to download installation data and updates. A disc does not necessarily contain every current file needed for the installation, and a digital purchase must download the game. The console can also require updates before it starts the latest installed build.
Before you press Install
- Check the free-space figure in the console’s storage settings.
- Close other downloads if you need the game to install first.
- Use a stable connection; a large interrupted download may need to verify or resume data.
- Do not quote a fixed update size to yourself or someone else as a permanent requirement. The console’s current figure is the authoritative one for that installation.
What backward compatibility means in practice
Backward compatibility lets the newer console run the older console edition. It does not, by itself, prove that the game has a new-generation codebase, a particular frame-rate mode, upgraded textures, or a guaranteed resolution target.

Rockstar’s official announcement said that “the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be playable on these new consoles via backward compatibility.” That statement supports the edition choice and the ability to play; it does not establish an additional PS5 or Xbox Series enhancement.

Features you should not assume
- A separate PS5 or Xbox Series X|S product page.
- A dedicated current-generation performance mode or universal frame-rate target.
- A guaranteed visual upgrade beyond what the backward-compatible edition and its updates provide.
- A permanent guarantee that online services will remain available.
If Rockstar publishes a later platform-specific update, use that announcement and its version notes to determine what changed. Until then, treat the game as the PS4 or Xbox One edition running on newer hardware.

“The console says I need the wrong version”
Look for the PS4 edition on PS5 or the Xbox One edition on Xbox Series X|S. The supported path is backward compatibility, not a separately labelled native edition.
The download stops because of insufficient space
- Open the console’s storage-management screen and check the actual free space.
- Remove unused games or captures, or move them to storage supported by your console.
- Recheck the installation prompt after freeing space; use its current requirement rather than the nominal 99 GB or 107 GB figure alone.
- Restart the installation if the console retained an incomplete download that is no longer valid.
The disc is not recognised
- Remove and reinsert the disc, checking for visible dirt or damage.
- Confirm that the disc belongs to the correct platform family: PS4 for PS5, or Xbox One for Xbox Series X|S.
- For the PS4 retail release, use the Play Disc and Data Disc according to the prompts.
- If other discs also fail, troubleshoot the console’s drive rather than treating this as a game-version problem.
The game installed but asks for a disc
That is expected for a disc-based license. Insert the owning disc; the installed files and the ownership check are separate parts of the process.
The game is missing from a digital library
