The lo-fi psycho-thriller romance adventure is planned for 2026, and its Steam page currently says the game is not yet available. SteamDB also lists it as unreleased. You can wishlist the official Steam listing now, then install it on a Windows PC after launch. Steam Deck play will depend on Proton compatibility testing that has not happened publicly yet.
Rain98 release status: what you can do now
Rain98 is a forthcoming PC game rather than a currently playable release. The official Steam listing provides the planned 2026 window but no downloadable build, demo, or release-day installer. SteamDB independently records the app as unreleased. That means there is no legitimate Rain98 package to install at present, and any third-party download claiming to be the finished game is not an established release channel.

Wishlist the official listing
Open the official Rain98 page in the Steam client or on Steam’s website and select Add to your wishlist. Steam can then notify you when the store page changes, the release becomes available, or the developer posts an announcement. Keep the listing in your library rather than relying on download links shared on social media or file-hosting sites.

- A precise launch date and time have not been published.
- There is no announced demo, early-access build, or separate installer in the available official information.
- No Rain98-specific frame-rate measurements, review benchmarks, Steam Deck test, ProtonDB report, or official troubleshooting patch are available.
Those gaps matter because a specification list can show what hardware the developer intends to support, but it cannot predict frame rate, shader-compilation stutter, controller behavior, video playback, text size, or Proton performance.

Published Windows requirements
The Steam listing gives Windows 10 as the supported desktop target. The figures below are the complete published hardware guidance; memory, display resolution, frame-rate targets, and DirectX details are not stated.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 | Windows 10 is the listed target. Windows 11 is newer, but no Rain98-specific Windows 11 test result has been published. |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 | Intel Core i7 | The listing does not identify the generation or exact model, so these labels are broad compatibility guidance. |
| Graphics | Intel HD Graphics 4000 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 | No expected resolution, quality preset, or frame-rate result is supplied for either GPU. |
| Available storage | 2 GB | 4 GB | These are the stated free-space amounts. Leave additional room for Steam updates and Windows temporary files. |
| System memory | Not stated | Not stated | Do not treat an unstated RAM figure as a guarantee for a particular laptop or handheld. |
Minimum versus recommended hardware
The Core i3 and Intel HD Graphics 4000 combination is the developer’s minimum baseline, not a promise of a specific visual quality or frame rate. The Core i7 and GTX 1060 recommendation indicates a higher-performance target, but no published test explains whether that means 1080p at 60 frames per second, a different resolution, or simply smoother operation in demanding scenes. Treat both rows as compatibility guidance until launch testing provides measured results.
How to install Rain98 on Windows 10 or Windows 11 after release
Once the Steam page changes to a released state, use Steam’s normal desktop installation path. The exact button labels can change slightly between Steam client versions, but the sequence is stable.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Update the computer. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and install a current graphics driver for the Intel or NVIDIA GPU. This removes avoidable driver and runtime problems before the first launch.
- Open the official Steam listing. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game. When the release is live, the page will show a purchase or library installation control instead of the current unavailable message.
- Choose Install. Select a library drive with at least the published free-space amount plus room for updates. The minimum listing says 2 GB; the recommended listing says 4 GB. A little extra space prevents an update from failing when the drive is nearly full.
- Let Steam finish the download and installation. Do not launch while the client still shows a queued update, shader-cache operation, or file allocation task.
- Launch from Library. The first start may take longer while the game creates local files or compiles shaders. Do not infer a permanent failure from a single slow first launch.
- Check the game’s own settings. Set display mode, resolution, audio output, subtitles, and control bindings before judging performance. The initial defaults may not suit a laptop display or accessibility needs.
Windows 11 specifically
Readers asking how to play Rain98 on Windows 11 should use the same Steam procedure. The published requirement names Windows 10, and no separate Windows 11 compatibility report is available. Because Windows 11 is a later Microsoft desktop release, it is a reasonable platform to try once the game is released, but that is an inference from the operating-system generation, not a Rain98 test result. Keep Windows, GPU drivers, and Steam current, and record the exact Windows and driver versions if you need to report a launch problem.
If the Windows launch fails
- Restart Windows and Steam, then try the launch again.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Rain98, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Check the store page’s News or announcements area for a developer-posted launch note or patch.
- Confirm that the installation drive still has free space and that security software has not quarantined a game file.
- If the problem remains, note the error text, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, and whether verification found damaged files. There is no Rain98-specific fix to apply until the developer documents one.
Can Rain98 run on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck uses SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system, rather than desktop Windows. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer translates the Windows game environment so many Windows titles can run through SteamOS. That mechanism makes Deck play possible in principle, but it does not guarantee that every title works correctly.
Rain98 has no authoritative Steam Deck Verified or Playable result yet because the game has not released. There is also no Rain98 entry with tested controls, video playback, text readability, battery behavior, or frame-rate reports in ProtonDB. Do not buy a Deck or change its operating system on the assumption that a particular rating will appear.

Steam Deck installation and Proton procedure after release
Use these steps when the game is available in your Steam library. They describe the standard Deck workflow, not a claim that a particular Proton build has already been tested with Rain98.
- Check the store-page compatibility label. On the Deck, open Rain98’s Steam page and read the current badge. Verified means Valve has completed its compatibility checks for the listed criteria; Playable means the game can work but may require manual adjustments. A label can change after a game update.
- Install from Steam. Select the install button, choose internal storage or an optional microSD card, and wait for the download and shader processing to complete. The 2 GB minimum storage figure does not make a microSD card necessary; it is only an optional expansion when your internal drive is crowded.
- Try the default runtime first. Steam normally chooses a compatibility tool automatically. Launch with that selection before forcing a different version so you have a known baseline.
- Force a Proton tool only if needed. From the game’s page, open the gear icon, choose Properties, select Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose the current stable Proton build offered by your Deck. Restart the game after changing the tool.
- Check the controls and display. Confirm that the controller layout exposes every required action, that keyboard prompts are understandable, and that text fits the Deck’s screen. If the title is marked Playable rather than Verified, these checks are your responsibility.
- Revert changes when testing. If a forced tool performs worse, return to the automatically selected option or try another stable build available in the Compatibility menu. Proton behavior can differ between releases, so keep a note of which build produced each result.
What to inspect on a Playable rating
- Whether the launcher can be operated with the controller or needs touchscreen input.
- Whether small menus, subtitles, and tutorial text remain readable at the Deck’s native display size.
- Whether keyboard prompts appear even when the active layout is a gamepad.
- Whether videos, audio, rain effects, reflections, and other presentation elements play without missing frames or sound.
- Whether suspend and resume return to the same save state.
These are general Deck checks. No Rain98-specific result is established for any of them before release.
Which Proton version should you use for Rain98?
There is no responsible way to name a Rain98-specific Proton version before a public build exists. Start with Steam’s automatically selected runtime. If that fails, enable the compatibility override and test the current stable Proton option shown by Steam Deck. Record the version and symptom, then check the game’s announcements or a current compatibility report for later guidance.

| Situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| No game-specific reports yet | Use Steam’s default selection. | It reflects Valve’s current runtime choice and avoids an arbitrary override. |
| Game will not start with the default | Force the current stable Proton build in Properties > Compatibility. | This creates a controlled troubleshooting change. |
| A stable build fails after an update | Return to automatic selection and read the latest developer or Steam notes. | Runtime regressions and game patches can change behavior. |
| A non-Steam copy is legitimately provided in the future | Add it from Desktop Mode as a non-Steam game, then select a Proton tool. | This is a general Steam Deck method, not an announced Rain98 distribution path. |
Windows and Steam Deck: what can be compared now
The platform mechanics are known, while Rain98’s measured behavior is not. Use this table to understand the practical differences without treating unknowns as promises.
| Area | Windows PC | Steam Deck | Rain98-specific evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation source | Steam desktop client. | SteamOS Steam client. | Both depend on a future Steam release. |
| Runtime | Native Windows execution. | Windows build through Proton. | No tested Proton version is established. |
| Input | Keyboard and mouse are available; final bindings are not published. | Controller, trackpads, touchscreen, and an on-screen keyboard are available. | Control mapping has not been tested publicly. |
| Display | Monitor or laptop resolution and scaling. | Deck’s built-in display or an external monitor. | Text-size and UI-readability results are unknown. |
| Video and audio | Uses the Windows runtime and installed drivers. | Passes through Proton and SteamOS components. | No Rain98 playback test is available. |
| Saves | Steam Cloud behavior depends on the final app configuration. | Cloud synchronization depends on the same configuration. | Save-sync support is not stated. |
| Performance | Depends on CPU, GPU, drivers, resolution, and settings. | Depends on Proton, Deck power limits, resolution, and settings. | No frame-rate benchmark has been published. |
Storage, performance, and expectations
The listed 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended values refer to available storage, not RAM and not a performance tier. Keep more free space than the bare minimum for Steam’s download process, patches, shader caches, and Windows or SteamOS temporary files. If you use a microSD card on Deck, choose it for general library capacity; Rain98’s stated storage requirement alone does not require one.

Do not convert the hardware rows into an assumed frame-rate target. A Core i3 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 may satisfy the published baseline yet deliver a different experience from a Core i7 with a GTX 1060, depending on resolution and visual settings. Until measured tests exist, the only defensible approach is to begin with default settings, observe frame pacing and input response, and adjust resolution or quality options one change at a time.

What kind of game is Rain98?
The Steam description presents Rain98 as a lo-fi psycho-thriller romance adventure set in 1990s Tokyo. Its listed ingredients include exploration, minigames, player choices, and a soundtrack, so this is an atmosphere- and narrative-led experience rather than a hardware benchmark title.
Director Shoon T has described an image-making approach that keeps still compositions quiet while animating selected details: hair, smoke, rain, blinking, light reflections, and subtle camera movement. Creative Bloq reports that the director draws on film, horror, and anime influences. Those comments describe the intended visual language; they do not establish how the final build will perform on a particular PC or Deck.
A practical checklist for launch day
- Confirm that Steam’s page shows the game as released and that the install control is genuine.
- Check the final system-requirements panel for any changes to the Windows target, storage, or hardware guidance.
- On Windows, update the operating system and graphics driver before launching.
- On Deck, read the current compatibility badge instead of relying on an old screenshot or pre-release claim.
- Leave free storage for updates and shader processing.
- Run the unmodified default configuration once before changing Proton, launch options, or graphics settings.
- Record your hardware, operating-system version, Proton build, and exact error if troubleshooting is required.
- Use developer announcements and Steam’s own support tools for Rain98-specific fixes; generic Proton advice cannot substitute for a patch aimed at the game.
Bottom line for Windows 11 and Steam Deck owners
There is nothing to install today because Rain98 is still unreleased. A Windows 10-or-newer PC that meets the published Core i3/Intel HD Graphics 4000 minimum or Core i7/GTX 1060 recommendation is the supported starting point once the Steam version launches. Windows 11 users should follow the normal Steam installation path while recognizing that a Rain98-specific Windows 11 test has not been published. Steam Deck owners should wait for the store’s compatibility label, use the default Proton selection first, and force a stable Proton tool only as a troubleshooting step. Any stronger claim about frame rate, controls, or Verified status would go beyond the available evidence.
