Quordle is a four-board word puzzle. You enter one valid five-letter English word, and that guess is scored on all four boards at the same time. On the Quordle.game rules implementation, you have nine total guesses to solve four hidden words; green marks a correctly placed letter, yellow marks a letter that belongs elsewhere in that board’s word, and gray marks a letter absent from that board. The central skill is balancing information: use early guesses to test useful letters across every board, then switch to targeted solving as patterns become clear.
What is Quordle?
Quordle takes the familiar five-letter deduction format and runs four puzzles in parallel. Every submitted word appears on each board, so a single turn can reveal four different sets of clues. You are not solving one long word or choosing which board receives a guess; the same entry is evaluated independently against all four hidden answers.

The researched Quordle.game rules page describes four five-letter words and nine total attempts. That nine-guess limit applies to that implementation, so check the rules on any other site before assuming its limit is identical. The same page also says a word cannot be submitted twice there.

How many guesses do you get in Quordle?
On Quordle.game’s rules implementation, you get nine attempts for four boards. Each attempt is one valid five-letter English word entered across all four boards. You win only by identifying all four words before those nine rows are used.
The nine guesses create a different tempo from a single-board puzzle. Spending several turns trying to finish one nearly solved board can leave the other three without enough information. Early rows are usually more valuable as broad tests; later rows can be directed at the boards that still have multiple plausible answers.
The no-repeat rule is also implementation-specific. Quordle.game says the same word cannot be submitted twice. If a different site accepts repeats or uses another attempt count, its on-screen instructions take precedence.

How to start a Quordle game
Choose the site and mode first
“Quordle” is used by more than one web implementation, and the available modes are not identical. The Quordle.game FAQ describes unlimited play in which four words are randomly selected for each round and says that site currently has no daily mode. The independent Quardle.org Quordle page displays both practice and daily-challenge options. Select the mode you intend to play and read its attempt counter before entering a word.
Enter a valid five-letter word
- Click or tap the game board so the input is active.
- Type a five-letter English word with a physical keyboard, or tap letters on the on-screen keyboard.
- Press Enter to submit. If you need to correct the row first, use Backspace to remove letters.
- Wait for the colors to appear on all four boards before planning the next row.
Those physical-keyboard, on-screen-keyboard, Enter, and Backspace controls are documented on the Quordle.game rules page. A mobile layout may place the boards and keyboard differently, but the input sequence is the same.
What do the Quordle colors mean?
Green: correct letter and position
A green tile means that letter is in the hidden word and occupies the exact position you guessed on that board. Keep it fixed in that position when testing later words for that board.
Yellow: correct letter, wrong position
A yellow tile means the letter appears in that board’s answer but not in the position you used. Move it to a different position in a later candidate. The yellow clue belongs only to the board that displayed it.

Gray: letter absent from that board
A gray tile means the letter does not appear in that board’s answer, according to that board’s feedback. Do not automatically remove it from every puzzle: another board can still contain the same letter.
Read every board independently
Suppose an A is green on board one but gray on board three. That is not contradictory. It tells you that A is fixed in board one’s answer and absent from board three’s answer. Record clues by board rather than keeping one global list of “good” and “bad” letters.
How the four-part keyboard helps
The Quordle.game FAQ describes an on-screen keyboard divided into four quadrants, one for each board. These quadrants let you see board-specific letter status at a glance. A key can therefore show different states in different quadrants, mirroring the fact that each answer has independent clues.
Use the keyboard as a confirmation aid, not as a replacement for written notes. When a board has several yellows and greens, mentally (or on paper) track the positions already ruled out. If you are playing on a small phone screen, zooming the page or rotating the device can make the four feedback areas easier to distinguish, but those layout choices depend on the site and browser.

1. Make the first guess a letter survey
Your opening word should expose several distinct, common letters rather than repeat a letter unnecessarily. The point of row one is to learn which letters are present on each of four boards and, when possible, where they belong. A word that happens to solve one board immediately can still be useful, but a broad test usually gives more information for the remaining puzzles.
The rules guidance recommends prioritizing common letters such as E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I, and N. This is a practical suggestion from that site, not a controlled demonstration that one exact opening word is optimal.
2. Use the second and third guesses to cover gaps
After the first row, inspect each board separately. Choose follow-up words that test high-value letters you have not yet tried and that fit any emerging green or yellow constraints. Avoid spending both early rows on near-identical words: if the second guess repeats most of the first guess, it contributes little new information unless the pattern requires it.

Across the first two or three guesses, aim for coverage of many distinct letters. This does not mean ignoring a strong pattern; if a board already shows a nearly complete arrangement, a confirming word can be sensible. The trade-off is between testing unknown letters and converting known clues into an answer.

3. Maintain four separate clue records
- Greens: write each fixed letter and its position for that board.
- Yellows: list letters that must appear, together with positions where they cannot go.
- Grays: record letters ruled out on that board.
- Unresolved slots: note how many positions remain and which common letters could fill them.
Do not merge these lists. Information transfers only when the same guess produces a useful clue on another board; a gray key in one quadrant is not a universal ban.
4. Switch from exploration to exploitation
Once your rows reveal reliable patterns on all four boards, stop using every turn as a general survey. Form candidate answers that honor the greens, place yellows in new positions, and avoid that board’s grays. The rules guidance says that after one board is solved, you have more freedom to focus your remaining guesses on the unsolved boards. Use that freedom to test the most constrained board first, while still selecting words that can provide information elsewhere when possible.
What is a good Quordle starting word?
There is no evidence in the available sources for a guaranteed or mathematically proven best opener, and no attributable win-rate or average-score statistic is established. Treat any fixed opening as a preference, not a promise.
Quardle.org gives two example opening pairs: TEARS followed by CHINO, or ADIEU followed by SNOUT. Those are that site’s suggestions. Their value is broad letter coverage, but the pair may be less useful when your first row already reveals a strong pattern that calls for a different second word.
A practical selection checklist is:
- Does the word contain several distinct letters?
- Does it test common vowels and consonants you have not tested recently?
- Can it be entered legally on the site you are using?
- Will your second guess add new letters if the first produces little feedback?
Choose a word you can remember and apply consistently, then adjust when the board evidence gives you a better information-producing move.
How to manage the nine-row limit
Protect the first three rows
With nine total attempts on Quordle.game, the first third of the game is your main discovery window. Broad coverage gives every board a chance to reveal vowels, common consonants, and fixed positions. A speculative answer that changes only one letter from a previous guess can be worthwhile later, but it is usually an expensive opening if it tests nothing new.

Prioritize the board with the clearest pattern
When one board has several greens and yellows, solve candidates there while choosing entries that still contribute clues to other boards. If another board has almost no information, use a coverage word for it rather than repeatedly guessing a narrow pattern on the solved-looking board. The shared-row design means every entry should be judged by its total information across four boards.
Use solved boards as breathing room
After a board is completed, its role changes from an active deduction problem to a solved reference. The rules guidance notes that you can then focus more freely on the remaining boards. Keep checking the row feedback on unsolved boards, and avoid wasting a turn merely to replay the solved answer unless the interface requires a particular action.
Do not assume a guess is safe everywhere
A word that fits board one can be invalid as a solution for board two, or simply provide no new information there. Before submitting, ask what the word tests on each unresolved board. This prevents tunnel vision and makes the limited rows work harder.

Treating the four boards as one puzzle
Symptom: you eliminate a letter globally because it was gray once.
Fix: read the quadrant or board where the gray appeared and keep separate records. Another board may still need that letter.
Chasing a single early answer
Symptom: two or three guesses differ by only one position while other boards remain blank.
Fix: reserve early rows for distinct-letter coverage, then return to the nearly solved pattern once the other boards have useful clues.
Ignoring yellow-position restrictions
Symptom: the same yellow letter is placed in the same location repeatedly.
Fix: list the positions that yellow letter has already failed and test it elsewhere while preserving any green placements.
Assuming one site’s modes apply everywhere
Symptom: you expect a daily puzzle or a particular attempt count and cannot find it.
Fix: check the site’s mode selector and rules page. Quordle.game describes unlimited random rounds and no current daily mode, while Quardle.org shows practice and daily options.
Repeating a submitted word
Symptom: the game rejects a word you already used.
Fix: on Quordle.game, the rules prohibit submitting the same word twice. Select a different valid five-letter word that tests the needed letters.

Before row one
- Confirm which site and mode you opened.
- Check the attempt counter and whether the interface blocks duplicate words.
- Prepare a broad, distinct-letter opener using common letters.
After row one
- Read all four boards before typing again.
- Mark greens, yellows, and grays separately for each board.
- Identify letters that have not yet been tested and could divide the remaining possibilities.
After row two or three
- Decide which boards have enough structure for answer attempts.
- Use a coverage word where a board still lacks basic vowel or consonant information.
- Move every yellow to a new position and preserve every green.
With four or fewer rows left
- Spend guesses on candidates that satisfy a board’s complete pattern, not just one attractive clue.
- Favor words that can still reveal something on another unsolved board when two choices are otherwise similar.
- After a board is solved, direct attention to the remaining boards as the rules guidance allows.

Quordle becomes manageable when you treat every row as four simultaneous experiments. Gather broad evidence first, keep the feedback board-specific, and spend the final rows on candidates that satisfy the patterns you have actually established.
