Quordle is a four-board word puzzle with one shared supply of nine guesses. Each valid five-letter word you enter is judged separately against four hidden five-letter answers. Green tiles mark a correct letter in the correct place, yellow tiles mark a letter that belongs elsewhere, and gray tiles show a letter the particular board does not need. You win by solving all four boards before guess nine.
The most reliable approach is to spend the opening guesses collecting common, distinct letters across every board, then switch to board-by-board deduction as patterns become constrained. Quordle’s published rules describe completion within nine guesses, not a separate official points formula.

What Quordle is and how a round works
Quordle displays four independent five-letter puzzles at the same time. You type one five-letter word, submit it once, and that word is applied to all four boards. Each board then returns its own color pattern because each hidden answer can contain different letters in different positions.
You have nine total attempts for the entire four-board set—not nine guesses per board. A guess used to make progress on one grid also consumes one attempt on the other three. The objective is therefore broader than finding one answer: you must manage a shared budget while gathering information that helps several boards at once.

What counts as a guess
Every entry must be a valid five-letter word. The rules described for Quordle also say that you cannot submit the same word twice in one round. A submitted word is spent even if it produces little useful information, so speculative repeats are especially costly.
How the four boards differ
The boards are scored independently. A letter can be green on one board and gray on another, or yellow on one board and absent on a different board. Never assume that a result on one grid automatically applies to the others.
The on-screen keyboard is divided into four quadrants so you can track letter feedback for each board. Treat each quadrant as a separate record rather than as one global keyboard state.

What the green, yellow, and gray squares mean
Read the colors separately on every board after every submission. A single row can contain different evidence on each grid.
Green: correct letter and position
A green square confirms both the letter and its exact position in that board’s answer. Keep that letter fixed in later guesses for that board. Green information is usually the strongest evidence you have, but remember that the same position may be unrestricted on the other three boards.
Yellow: correct letter, wrong position
A yellow square confirms that the letter occurs somewhere in that board’s answer but not in the position you just tried. Move it to a different position in subsequent candidates. If a letter is yellow on one grid, it can still be gray or green on another.
Gray: the board does not need that letter
A gray square means that letter is not needed in that board’s answer. Record the exclusion for that board only. Do not gray out the letter globally: another hidden answer may contain it, and the same letter may even be confirmed green elsewhere.

Because each board has its own answer, the four results for one typed letter can legitimately disagree. For example, an A might be green in the upper-left board, yellow in the upper-right board, and gray in the two lower boards. This is not a contradiction; it is four separate evaluations of the same guess.
How Quordle scoring works
The practical score is whether you finish all four boards within the nine-guess allowance, along with how many guesses you used or had remaining. The published rules and FAQ material do not provide an official numeric points formula, multiplier, or leaderboard calculation.

That means you should not treat Quordle as a game with a documented score such as “points per green tile.” A clean way to describe a result is “solved in seven guesses” or “two guesses left.” If the live Merriam-Webster interface later displays a different scoring system, follow the labels and explanation shown there rather than assuming an older convention still applies.
Is Quordle scored like Wordle?
Quordle’s defining scoring constraint is its four-board, nine-guess win condition. The available rules do not establish a separate Quordle point calculation to compare with another game’s scoring formula. In practical terms, your performance is measured by completing every board before the shared limit, not by adding independent point totals from four isolated puzzles.
Where to play the daily Quordle
The researched guides describe Quordle as a free browser game on Merriam-Webster’s games site with a fresh daily puzzle. Hosting, available modes, and the publication schedule can change, so check the current game page for the interface and options that are live when you play.
A daily round is a fixed puzzle for that day rather than a private board generated only for your device. If the page offers practice or additional modes, read their labels carefully; the nine-guess rules above describe the standard four-board format covered here.
A repeatable nine-guess solving plan
The central decision is how to spend a shared budget. Early guesses should reveal as many useful letters as possible across all four boards. Later guesses should exploit confirmed patterns instead of continuing broad exploration.
Step 1: Choose an information-rich opening word
Start with a valid five-letter word containing several distinct, common letters. The rules guidance specifically highlights E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I, and N as useful high-frequency letters. A word that tests multiple letters is generally more valuable than one that repeats a letter or uses several unusual consonants before you know any pattern.
Examples such as arise, stare, or toner illustrate the principle: they cover common letters without duplicating one in the opening attempt. None is an officially designated “best” word, and no opening can be optimal for every possible four-answer set. Choose a familiar word you can enter accurately and use its feedback immediately.
Step 2: Read all four result rows before typing again
After submission, pause and inspect the complete layout. Look for every green and yellow tile on all boards, then note board-specific grays. A guess that appears unhelpful on one grid may reveal two confirmed letters on another, so deciding from only the first board wastes information.
- Mark fixed green positions for each board.
- List yellow letters that must move elsewhere on that board.
- Record gray exclusions separately for each board.
- Notice whether the same guess produced useful coverage on more than one grid.
Step 3: Use a second coverage word when the boards are still open
If the first row produced few confirmations, use your second attempt to test additional common letters rather than guessing a narrow answer at random. Prefer letters not already tested and avoid repeating the first word, which the described rules prohibit.

The second word does not have to be a plausible answer for every board. Its job can be diagnostic: it may identify a vowel, reveal a common consonant, or eliminate several candidate families at once. Keep any green and yellow evidence from the first row in mind so the coverage word does not discard a confirmed position unnecessarily.

Step 4: Consider a third broad test only when it buys information
A third exploratory guess can be worthwhile if multiple boards remain almost blank. By this point, however, the nine-guess budget is already one-third spent. Use a third coverage word only when it tests letters that have not been resolved and is likely to help several boards. If one board already shows a distinctive pattern, switch that board to targeted solving instead of continuing broad guesses automatically.
Step 5: Maintain a separate deduction record for every board
Organize notes in four columns or four mental groups. For each grid, keep the pattern of green positions, the list of yellow letters and forbidden positions, and the letters shown gray on that board. This prevents a common error: carrying a gray result from one answer over to the other three.
For example, if the upper-left board fixes _ A _ E _, has a yellow R, and excludes T, search only among words that fit that board’s evidence. The lower-right board may have an entirely different pattern even though both received the same guesses.
Step 6: Solve the most constrained board first
When one grid has several green letters, a small set of possible positions, or a distinctive letter combination, target it. A correct answer removes one unsolved board from the risk calculation and clarifies how many guesses remain for the others.

Do not reject a clearly supported answer merely because it is not an ideal information word, but avoid spending a turn on a candidate that repeats known failures and teaches nothing on the remaining grids.
Step 7: Protect the final guesses
With nine attempts shared among four answers, reserve room for uncertainty. Repeated low-information guesses can leave a board with a nearly solved pattern but no legal attempt left to test it. Before each late submission, ask:
- Which board is this guess primarily intended to solve?
- Does the word fit every green position already confirmed on that board?
- Does it place each yellow letter somewhere allowed?
- Does it avoid letters excluded on that board?
- Could the same entry reveal anything useful on another unsolved grid?
Step 8: Focus on the last board when three are solved
Once three answers are complete, the exploration phase is over. Use the remaining guesses for the final pattern, even if the word offers no benefit to solved boards. Recheck every green position, yellow restriction, and board-specific gray before committing. The last board is where disciplined elimination matters most because there are no longer multiple grids to spread the risk.
How to solve all four boards in nine guesses
There is no guaranteed sequence of words that solves every possible daily set in nine attempts. The nine-guess target is a resource-management problem: gather broad evidence early, then stop gathering evidence when a board becomes solvable.

This staging is a decision framework, not a rigid script. If the first guess produces several greens on one board, solve that board earlier. If all four boards remain sparse, another coverage attempt may be safer than forcing a speculative answer.

Treating the keyboard as global
Problem: You see a gray letter in one quadrant and stop considering it everywhere.
Fix: Read the keyboard by quadrant. A letter is excluded only for the board that returned gray feedback.
Spending three guesses on one board too early
Problem: A promising pattern captures your attention while the other three boards receive little useful coverage.

Repeating a low-information word

Assuming a gray letter is absent from every answer
Problem: You remove a useful letter from your candidate search on the other boards.
Fix: Attach every gray result to its board. Reconsider the letter elsewhere unless that board independently marks it gray too.
Guessing an answer that violates a green tile
Problem: Excitement about a plausible word leads you to move a letter that is already confirmed.
Fix: Treat green positions as locked. A candidate that breaks one cannot be correct for that board, regardless of how familiar the word looks.
Practical note-taking layout
A compact four-board worksheet can make the shared budget easier to manage. Create one section for each grid and write:
- Pattern: five slots, filling greens immediately.
- Yellow letters: each letter plus the positions it cannot occupy.
- Gray letters: exclusions for that board only.
- Candidate words: a short list that satisfies all known constraints.
- Guess count: the number of attempts used and the number remaining.
After each row, update all four sections before generating another word. This takes longer than glancing at the colors, but it prevents cross-board contamination—the mistake most likely to turn valid information into a false elimination.

The daily format gives everyone using the live game page the puzzle presented for that date, while the exact hosting, schedule, and available modes may change. If the interface offers a share function, use the current controls shown on the page; the rules described here do not establish a particular sharing format.
