Prepare offline access before the next verification failure. For a Steam game, sign in while connected, enable Remember me, finish every update, launch the game once, and select Steam > Go Offline. If the client later asks you to sign in while disconnected, there is no supported bypass; reconnect and authenticate. Other stores follow different rules: Epic ownership errors usually require the account that completed the purchase, EA allows eligible games to run offline for 30 days after their last online launch, Microsoft Store titles may require a designated offline Windows device, and GOG supplies standalone installers designed to work without Galaxy.
Identify what actually failed
A message saying that ownership cannot be verified does not always mean the purchase disappeared. Three separate checks can fail, and each needs a different remedy.

| What you see | Likely problem | Correct first action |
|---|---|---|
| The store says you do not own the game or cannot verify ownership | Account authentication, saved credentials, device licensing, or a server-side entitlement check | Reconnect and sign in to the account that bought the game; do not begin with file repair |
| The game crashed after an update, or files are missing or corrupted | Incomplete download or damaged local files | Run the store’s official file-verification command, then allow any files to redownload |
| The store is in offline mode but the game still opens a login window or publisher launcher | The game has its own always-online requirement, third-party DRM, or an external launcher dependency | Check the game’s requirements; a storefront offline mode cannot remove a separate entitlement check |
File verification repairs the installation on your drive. It does not remove a title’s DRM, convert an online-only game into an offline game, or create a license for an account that does not own the title.
Use this decision path
- Reconnect if the failure is about ownership. Select the account that completed the purchase, confirm the game appears in that account’s library, and let the launcher finish signing in.
- Repair files only when the symptoms point to files. Use Steam’s or Epic’s official verification tool after a failed update, crash, or incomplete installation.
- Complete one successful online launch. Some games perform first-run setup, license creation, or redistributable installation only on the first launch.
- Prepare the store’s offline mode while authentication still works. Save credentials where the client offers Remember me and use its documented offline command.
- Test with the network disconnected. Quit the game, disconnect deliberately, and start it again. This exposes an external launcher or online requirement while you can still reconnect.
- If the test fails, classify the dependency. A login prompt from the store, a publisher launcher, or the game itself has a different owner and therefore a different fix.
Steam: prepare Offline Mode before you lose access
Steam Support defines Offline Mode as a way to play games without an active connection to the Steam Network. It is conditional, not a universal offline license: the client must have authenticated your account, the game must be installed and updated, and the title must not require an active connection or an external launcher.

Prepare Steam while online
- Start Steam while connected to the internet and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- On the sign-in screen, enable Remember me. This stores the credential state Steam needs for a later offline start; it does not bypass a password request if that state is unavailable.
- Open your Library and let Steam finish all client and game updates. Do not switch offline while a download, patch, shader preparation, or first-run installation is pending.
- Launch the game once while connected. Reach the main menu or another point that shows the first-run setup has completed, then exit normally.
- In the Steam client, choose Steam > Go Offline and confirm the restart into Offline Mode.
- With Steam in Offline Mode, start the game from the Library. For a reliable test, disconnect the network after Steam has entered Offline Mode and launch the game again.
Steam’s documented workflow does not promise that every game will work this way. A title that contacts a server at every launch, uses a publisher launcher, or performs an online entitlement check can still fail. Steam’s offline setting controls the Steam Network connection; it cannot override the game’s own requirements.
If Steam asks you to log in offline
There is no supported Steam bypass for a login prompt while disconnected. Reconnect, authenticate, enable Remember me, confirm that the game has completed a successful online launch, and select Steam > Go Offline again. Trying a modified executable, a credential obtained from another person, or a DRM-removal utility risks the account and does not create a lawful license.
Repair Steam files after a failed update
When the evidence points to damaged files rather than ownership, open the game’s Library entry, open its Properties, select the installed-files section, and run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command. Let Steam complete the scan and redownload anything it replaces before repeating the offline test. Verification can correct a partial installation; it cannot change an always-online policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEpic Games Store: separate account ownership from file integrity
An Epic ownership error is commonly an account-selection problem first. A family member’s account, a different email address, or a purchase that has not completed can make an installed game appear unowned. File verification is a separate operation.
Correct an ownership error
- Reconnect the Epic Games Launcher and sign out if it is using the wrong profile.
- Sign in to the Epic account that completed the purchase. Confirm that the game is present in that account’s Library and that the transaction is complete rather than pending or refunded.
- Close and reopen the launcher if the Library does not refresh. Do not delete the local installation until the account issue is resolved.
- After the correct account is recognized, run the game online once so its first-run components and any required entitlement data can be created.
Verify an Epic installation
In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library, use the game’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and select Verify. The launcher compares local files with the approved installation and downloads replacements when necessary. It does not repair an account that does not own the game and does not disable third-party DRM.

Epic’s offline behavior can also be limited by the individual title. If the launcher or the game still requests an online entitlement after the correct account and a clean installation are confirmed, treat that as a game-level requirement rather than a damaged-file problem.
EA app: the documented 30-day offline window
Electronic Arts states in its current EA app help documentation that an eligible game can work offline for 30 days from its last online launch. The 30-day period is an EA platform rule for eligible titles, not a universal rule for PC games.

- Install all pending EA app and game updates.
- Launch the game online and allow it to reach its normal menu so first-run setup and entitlement checks finish.
- Exit the game normally, then use the EA app’s offline option or disconnect the network and start the title again.
- Reconnect and launch online before the 30-day window expires. This refreshes the last-online-launch date for eligible games.
If an offline start fails after that period, reconnecting is the supported recovery. A game may also remain online-dependent even inside the 30-day window if its own DRM, multiplayer service, or publisher component requires a live connection.
Microsoft Store and Xbox for Windows: license the device for offline use
For Microsoft Store or Xbox titles on Windows, offline play is tied to device licensing as well as the account. Where the option is available, designate the specific Windows PC as the account’s offline device while connected and signed in. A different computer may need a roaming license when the game launches.
- Use the Microsoft account that purchased the title and sign in to the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app, if the game uses both.
- On the Windows device you intend to use without internet access, open the account or store settings and enable the platform’s offline PC or offline permissions setting when offered.
- Install the game completely, apply updates, and launch it once online. This confirms that the device and account can obtain the title’s license.
- Disconnect the network and test the game on that same designated device.
The exact availability of offline permissions depends on the title, edition, account, and current Microsoft licensing rules. If the game is started on another Windows device, the account may need a roaming license or another online check. A storefront setting cannot remove a game’s separate publisher launcher or always-online requirement.

GOG: the strongest option for long-term offline preservation
GOG provides offline backup game installers that can be downloaded without the Galaxy app. GOG’s developer documentation states that all games on the service must be playable offline and without the Galaxy client. That makes GOG the clearest legal preservation route when you need a game to remain usable after a storefront client or authorization server is unavailable.
Download and test the backup
- Sign in to your GOG account while connected and open the game in your library.
- Choose the offline backup installer downloads rather than relying only on the Galaxy installation.
- Download every installer part listed for the game, including language packs or bonus components you actually need. Missing one part can make a multi-part installer fail.
- Store the complete set on a USB flash drive or external SSD with enough capacity for the installer files and a second copy if possible.
- While still online, run the installer on the target PC or a test PC and confirm that it completes and the game starts.
- Safely eject the storage and keep a second copy in a separate location. The files preserve installation access; they do not transfer ownership of the GOG account.
Size the storage for the complete installer set, not merely the game’s installed size. Large releases can include multiple archives, patches, language files, and optional extras. Re-test a stored installer after copying it so a failed transfer is discovered before you are offline.
Can you launch a purchased game without its launcher?
Sometimes, but the storefront and the game’s own protection determine the result. Opening an executable directly is not equivalent to satisfying an ownership check.
| Storefront | What can usually be expected | Why direct launching may fail |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Use the Steam client in Offline Mode after the documented preparation | The game may require Steam’s saved license state, a publisher launcher, or an always-online service |
| Epic Games Store | Keep the Epic installation and account state intact; do not assume the executable is independent | Ownership and third-party checks can still be handled by the launcher or by the game |
| EA app | Use the EA app’s supported offline behavior for an eligible game within its 30-day window | The app or title can require a refreshed entitlement, an external component, or a live service |
| Microsoft Store/Xbox for Windows | Launch on the designated offline device with the correct account licensing | Windows licensing and roaming-device checks may occur before the game starts |
| GOG | Install from the offline backup files and play without Galaxy | An individual title can still have its own technical requirements, although GOG requires Galaxy-independent offline play |
Do not delete a launcher merely because a shortcut appears to work. First prove that the game starts with the network disconnected, then keep the supported client or installer available for updates and recovery.
Storefront comparison for offline planning
| Storefront | First online activation | Can the launcher be removed? | Offline authorization limit | Third-party DRM or launcher risk | Standalone installers | How ownership is rechecked |

| Epic Games Store | Online account sign-in and a completed purchase are required before offline testing | Not stated as a supported general option | Not stated as a universal Epic period | Possible, depending on the title | Not stated as a general Epic feature | Use the account that completed the purchase; file verification does not change ownership |
| EA app | Online sign-in and a successful online launch are required | Not guaranteed for EA-entitled games | 30 days since the last online launch for an eligible game, according to EA documentation | Possible, depending on the title and services it uses | Not stated as a general EA feature | Periodic online entitlement refresh, with the 30-day rule for eligible games |
| Microsoft Store/Xbox for Windows | Online account and device licensing setup are required | Not guaranteed | Not stated as a universal time limit | Possible, depending on the title | Not stated as a general feature | Designated offline PC licensing; another device may require a roaming license |
| GOG | Online access is needed to obtain the installer, but Galaxy-independent play is required | Yes, Galaxy is optional for the offline installer | No platform-wide time limit is stated | GOG requires offline, Galaxy-independent play, while a specific game can still have its own technical constraints | Yes, offline backup game installers | Account authentication is needed to download; the stored installer is intended to run offline |
Troubleshoot by the symptom, not by guesswork
The client forgets the account
Reconnect and sign in to the purchasing account. On Steam, enable Remember me and repeat the online first launch before selecting Offline Mode. On Epic, verify that the purchase appears in the current account. On Microsoft platforms, check that the account and designated device are the same ones used during installation.

Verification finds files but the game still will not start
That result means local integrity was not the only problem. Look for an external publisher launcher, an always-online DRM requirement, or a server-side entitlement check. Reinstalling the same files will not change one of those policies.
An update stopped partway through
Return online, let the launcher finish the update, then run its official verification command. Start the game once online after the repair and repeat the offline test. Do not archive a partially updated installation as your only backup.
EA offline play stopped working
Reconnect and launch the eligible title online to refresh its 30-day allowance. If it still fails, the title may not qualify for EA’s offline behavior or may require another live service.
The Microsoft title works on one PC but not another

Build a reliable offline backup
Offline preparation is more than clicking an offline toggle. Use this checklist for every game you expect to play during travel, a service outage, or a period without network access:
- Record the purchasing account and make sure its credentials are available to you; never store someone else’s credentials.
- Install the latest client and game update while online.
- Complete the first launch and any setup prompts before disconnecting.
- Test the game with the network deliberately disabled.
- Note whether a publisher launcher, anti-cheat service, or online entitlement appears.
- For Steam, enter Offline Mode through Steam > Go Offline.
- For EA, schedule an online launch at least once within each 30-day period for eligible games.
- For Microsoft Store/Xbox titles, use the designated offline Windows device where supported.
- For GOG, download every offline installer part and test it from a USB flash drive or external SSD.
- Keep installers and backups on storage that is large enough for the complete set, and maintain a second copy for irreplaceable purchases.
Legal and security boundaries
Use the account, launcher, installer, and support tools supplied by the store or publisher. Do not use cracks, stolen credentials, modified executables, or DRM-removal tools. A local copy preserves files and installer access; it cannot lawfully bypass an always-online entitlement check or turn a non-owned copy into a purchased game.
When a verification failure is genuinely account-related, support can restore access only after ownership is established. Keep purchase receipts and account-recovery information secure, and avoid deleting a working installation while the account issue is being investigated.

What to remember
Offline play is a preparation task, not a rescue procedure. Authenticate while online, finish updates, complete one successful launch, and test with the network disconnected. Steam requires that sequence for its supported Offline Mode; Epic requires the correct purchasing account before file repair has any value; EA’s documented allowance is 30 days for eligible games; Microsoft Store/Xbox licensing follows the designated Windows device; and GOG’s offline backup installers are the most dependable way to preserve long-term, launcher-independent access. If the game itself demands a live server or external launcher, no storefront setting can remove that requirement.
