Yes, you can play some PS5 games on a PC legally, but a PS5 purchase does not automatically unlock a PC copy. Your legitimate choices are: buy an official Windows port, stream a game from your own PS5 or PS4 with PS Remote Play, or use a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming catalog that supports your account, country, platform, and the specific game. These routes use different hardware, purchases, subscriptions, and save systems.
The three legal ways to play PlayStation games on a PC
PlayStation games reach a Windows computer through one of three official routes. Choosing the right one depends on whether you want a native PC installation, already own a console, or prefer a subscription stream.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Route | What runs the game? | What you need | How you pay | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official PC port | Your Windows PC | A compatible PC, the PC edition, and any required account | Buy the separate PC product, usually from Steam or Epic Games | Only titles with an official PC release are available |
| PS Remote Play | Your PS5 or PS4 | Your console, PlayStation account, Remote Play enabled, network connection, and controller | Use games you own or can run on that console | The console must remain available; it does not create a PC copy |
| PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | Sony’s cloud servers | A supported PC, PlayStation account, Premium membership, compatible game, and suitable internet connection | Subscription access plus any separate eligibility or ownership requirement shown for the title | Catalog, country, platform, and game support vary |
The distinction matters. A native port installs and renders locally, Remote Play mirrors your own console, and cloud streaming runs on a remote Sony server. They are not interchangeable versions of the same service.

What you are actually buying
Sony states that PlayStation Studios console and PC editions are different products. Buying the PC version does not grant a PS4 or PS5 license, and buying the console version does not automatically grant the Windows version. If a title has both editions, plan on treating them as separate purchases unless the individual store listing explicitly says otherwise.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Official PC releases are sold through PC retailers such as Steam and Epic Games. Sony’s catalog has included Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Helldivers 2. The lineup changes, so verify that a current official listing exists before buying hardware or assuming a release date.
Check these details on the store page
- Confirm that the product is the Windows PC edition, not a console listing or soundtrack bundle.
- Read the minimum and recommended specifications for your exact title.
- Check whether a PlayStation Network account is required for online modes or selected features.
- Note the storage requirement, launch platform, supported controller features, and any region restrictions shown by the retailer.
PC requirements vary by game
There is no single “PlayStation PC specification.” Sony’s published guidance illustrates how widely requirements can differ:
| Game | Published requirement example | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|
| God of War Ragnarök | Minimum guidance includes 8 GB of RAM and a 190 GB SSD requirement | Reserve substantially more than 190 GB if you need room for updates and other software. |
| Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered | 16 GB of RAM and 135 GB of storage listed in Sony’s guidance | A smaller drive may block installation even if the rest of the computer is fast enough. |
| Death Stranding 2: On the Beach | 16 GB of RAM and a 150 GB SSD listed in Sony’s guidance | Check the exact edition and operating-system requirements before downloading. |
These figures are title-specific examples, not a universal minimum for every PlayStation PC game. Graphics hardware, processor, operating-system version, display resolution, and the target frame rate can change the practical requirement. Keep free space beyond the stated number for patches, shader caches, and temporary installation files.

- Find the game’s current official PC listing on the publisher’s catalog or a named PC retailer.
- Compare your computer with that title’s minimum and recommended requirements, including storage.
- Purchase the Windows edition; owning a PS5 copy alone does not substitute for this license.
- Install the retailer’s PC client if necessary, sign in, and start the download to a drive with the required free space.
- Install any required PlayStation Network sign-in component and use the account requested by the game.
- Launch the game, configure graphics and input, and install updates before judging performance.
Controllers, keyboard, and PlayStation Network features
Sony’s PC documentation supports mouse and keyboard input and multiple controller types, but support is title-dependent. A DualSense controller works over USB on supported PlayStation PC games. Wireless operation and advanced features such as haptic feedback or adaptive triggers vary by game and connection method, so a wired connection is the dependable baseline when a feature matters.

Some PC titles require a PlayStation Network account only for particular modes or features rather than for every offline activity. Read the game’s current requirements instead of assuming that one account rule applies to the whole catalog.
Route 2: use PS Remote Play from your own console
How Remote Play works
Remote Play sends the video output and control input of a game running on your PS5 or PS4 to a compatible Windows PC or Mac. The console does the game processing; the computer acts as the display and input endpoint. This lets you play an installed console game on a laptop or desktop without purchasing a PC port.
Remote Play is not cloud gaming. Your console must be powered on or placed in the supported rest mode, connected to the internet, signed in to the appropriate PlayStation account, and able to run the game. Closing the console, losing its network connection, or starting an incompatible application ends the stream.

- A PS5 or PS4 with Remote Play enabled.
- A Windows PC or Mac running Sony’s Remote Play application.
- A PlayStation account.
- A reliable network connection between the console and the computer. A wired connection for the console is often the most stable arrangement, while Wi-Fi quality determines laptop performance.
- A compatible controller. A DualSense connected by USB is the straightforward choice for PS5 games; available wireless functions depend on the computer, operating system, and title.
Setup steps
- On the console, open Settings and enable the Remote Play option. The wording and menu placement can change with system software, so use the current Remote Play setting shown on your PS5 or PS4.
- If you want to wake the console from rest mode, enable the rest-mode options that keep it connected to the internet and allow network power-on.
- Install Sony’s PS Remote Play application on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Sign in to the application with the same PlayStation account associated with the console.
- Connect the controller to the computer, preferably by USB for the most predictable compatibility.
- Start the connection, select the PS5 or PS4 when prompted, and wait for the console’s screen to appear.
- Launch the installed game from the console interface. The game remains a console title; the PC is displaying its streamed output.
Games and devices Remote Play excludes
Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2, or other additional peripherals. Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are also not compatible with Remote Play. A title being available in a cloud catalog therefore does not guarantee that it can be sent from your own console through Remote Play.

- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Reducing delay and picture problems
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 or PS4 when possible, especially if the computer is on Wi-Fi.
- Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the home network.
- Move the computer closer to the wireless access point or use a wired connection.
- Lower the Remote Play application’s video quality or resolution when the stream stutters; a stable lower-quality picture is more playable than a high-resolution stream with dropped frames.
- Restart the application and console after a failed discovery or repeated disconnects, then verify that both are signed in to the same account.
Remote Play is the practical choice when you own the console and want access to its installed library in another room, on a Windows laptop, or while traveling. It does not remove the need to own, maintain, and leave the console available.
Route 3: stream from the cloud with PlayStation Plus Premium
What cloud streaming changes
Cloud streaming runs the game on Sony’s servers and sends the resulting video to your PC. Unlike Remote Play, it does not mirror your personal PS5 or PS4, so you can use it without a console at home when the service and title are supported for your account and location.
Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide says Premium members can stream a broad selection of Classics Catalog and PS4 Game Catalog titles directly to a PC without downloading them. Sony also describes PS5 cloud streaming for Premium. Availability of supported PS5 games, trials, and eligible digital PS5 titles varies by country and region; the exact PC catalog must be checked in the current service interface.
Requirements and eligibility checks
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership in a country where PC cloud streaming is offered.
- A compatible PC and the current PlayStation streaming application or supported browser experience specified by Sony.
- A PlayStation account that can use the service in your region.
- A game that is eligible for cloud streaming on PC. Catalog inclusion can differ from console availability.
- Enough bandwidth and a low-latency connection for interactive video.
- A compatible controller; DualSense support is strongest over a wired connection, while wireless and advanced functions vary.
How to start a cloud session
- Confirm that your country supports the Premium cloud feature and that your account has the Premium tier.
- Install or open Sony’s supported PC cloud-streaming application.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account holding the subscription.
- Browse the cloud-enabled catalog rather than assuming every PS5 or PS4 purchase is streamable.
- Open the title’s information page and check whether it is available for your region, account, and PC platform.
- Connect the controller, start the stream, and allow the service to test or adapt to your connection.
Cloud-streaming trade-offs
The main advantage is access without a local installation or a PS5. The trade-offs are recurring subscription cost, a catalog that can change, regional restrictions, possible queues or service interruptions, and input delay caused by the round trip between your controller and Sony’s servers. A fast connection cannot eliminate every delay if the route between you and the data center is long or congested.

The October 16, 2023 PlayStation Blog announcement marked the rollout of PS5 cloud streaming for Premium, but that announcement does not make every PS5 game universally available on PC. Always use the current catalog and the title’s own eligibility notice.

For PlayStation Studios titles, Sony says it is currently not possible to transfer save data from the PS4 or PS5 version to the PC version, or from PC back to console. A PC port may use the same PlayStation Network account for selected features while still keeping its save files separate. Do not buy a PC edition expecting to resume a console campaign automatically.
Remote Play is different because the game continues to run on the original console and uses that console’s save data. Cloud streaming uses the service’s supported account and game environment, but catalog access should not be confused with a promise that a separate PC port will recognize console saves.

Which route fits your situation?
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want maximum image quality, local performance, mods supported by the game, and no stream delay. | Official PC port | The computer renders the game locally, but you must buy the separate PC edition and meet its requirements. |
| You already own a PS5 or PS4 and want to play its installed games on a laptop. | PS Remote Play | It uses the games and saves on your console without another game purchase. |
| You do not own a console and want to try eligible titles without large downloads. | Premium cloud streaming | The servers run the game, subject to membership, catalog, country, and network limits. |
| Your internet connection is unstable but your PC is powerful. | Official PC port | Local rendering avoids stream interruptions, provided the title has a PC release. |
| Your PC is modest but you have a strong connection and an eligible subscription. | Cloud streaming | Most game processing happens remotely, although video quality and latency remain network-dependent. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a PS5 purchase includes Windows rights
It does not. Check for an explicitly listed PC edition and its retailer page before installing anything.

Confusing Remote Play with cloud streaming
Remote Play requires your own PS5 or PS4 and streams that console. Premium cloud streaming uses Sony’s servers and can work without a console when the title and region qualify.
Ignoring storage requirements
Large ports can require 135 GB, 150 GB, or 190 GB according to Sony’s title-specific examples. Leave additional headroom for updates and temporary files.
Expecting cross-save
Sony’s current guidance says PlayStation Studios saves cannot be transferred between the console and PC versions. Treat each edition as a separate save environment unless the individual game clearly documents another system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

USB DualSense support is the reliable baseline. Wireless play and advanced haptics or adaptive triggers vary by title and connection, so verify the game’s PC documentation.
Bottom line: the legal choice is clear once you identify what you own
Choose an official PC port when the game has one and you want a local installation. Choose Remote Play when you already own a PS5 or PS4 and want to operate that console from a PC. Choose PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming when you need console-free access and the current catalog, country, account, and network all qualify. In every case, verify the specific title: PlayStation PC releases are separate products, hardware requirements vary widely, and console saves generally do not move to the PC edition.
