Sony’s PS Remote Play app captures the game running on your PS4 and streams the video and audio to Android while sending your touch or controller input back to the console. You need a PS4, a compatible game, a PlayStation account, the PS Remote Play app, and a sufficiently reliable internet connection.
The most dependable setup is: enable Remote Play on the console, activate that console as your account’s Primary PS4, install PS Remote Play from Google Play, sign in with the same account, and select PS4. Touch controls work from Android 9; Bluetooth DUALSHOCK 4 support is listed from Android 10; DualSense support is listed from Android 12.

What “playing PS4 games on Android” actually means
PS Remote Play is console streaming, not Android emulation. Your PS4 performs the game’s processing, reads the game disc or digital license, and sends a live video stream to the Android device. The phone or tablet displays that stream and returns your button presses, touchscreen taps, or controller input to the PS4.
Because the console is doing the work, a faster Android processor does not make a demanding PS4 title run locally. The important factors are whether your PS4 is available, whether the game supports Remote Play, and whether the network between the console and Android device is stable enough for interactive video.

PlayStation describes Remote Play as a way to stream PS4 and PS5 games, switch games, view the console home screen, and browse menus on a compatible device connected through broadband or mobile data. This guide focuses on using a PS4 with Android.
What you need before starting
- A PS4 with current system software.
- A PlayStation account that you can use on both the console and Android device.
- The PS4 game installed or inserted in the console and supported by Remote Play.
- An Android phone or tablet running a compatible version of Android.
- The PS Remote Play app installed from Google Play.
- A network connection. Sony states a standard minimum of 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for better performance.
- Optional: a supported controller. Touch controls are built into the app, so buying a controller is not required.
Remote Play performance depends on the complete path between the PS4 and Android device. A fast internet package cannot eliminate problems caused by weak Wi-Fi, interference, congestion, high latency, or an upload-limited home connection.
Android and controller compatibility
Android version determines which input methods are available. Sony’s compatibility guidance uses these thresholds:
| Method | Android requirement listed by Sony | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| On-screen touch controls | Android 9 or later | Virtual controls appear after you tap the Remote Play screen. No separate gamepad is required. |
| DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth | Android 10 or later | Provides familiar PS4-style physical controls. Bluetooth and driver behavior can vary by device. |
| DualSense over Bluetooth | Android 12 or later | Can be used as an alternative PlayStation controller. Some controller features may not be available through Remote Play on Android. |
| Backbone One – PlayStation Edition | Android 10 or later phones, according to Sony’s compatibility listing | A phone-mounted handheld layout. Confirm that your specific phone fits and that the model is currently available. |
These are operating-system thresholds, not a guarantee for every handset. Sony advises checking the phone manufacturer’s information for controller-driver compatibility. A phone may meet the Android version requirement yet still have pairing, button-mapping, USB, or Bluetooth limitations.
Set up the PS4 for Remote Play
1. Update the console
Install any available PS4 system-software update before configuring Remote Play. A current console reduces the chance that the Android app and PS4 disagree about supported features or sign-in requirements.
2. Enable Remote Play
- From the PS4 function screen, open Settings.
- Choose Remote Play Connection Settings.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
Remote Play is disabled by default on a console that has never been configured. The Android app cannot discover that PS4 until this setting is enabled.

- The Dualshock 4 wireless controller can be easily recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when in rest mode, or with any standard charger using a USB cable (type A to micro B sold separately)
3. Activate the console as your Primary PS4
- Open Settings on the PS4.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Activate the console if the account has not already assigned another PS4 as primary.
Sony allows only one Primary PS4 per PlayStation account. If another console is already primary, you may need to deactivate it before assigning this one. Primary activation also helps the account recognize the console during Remote Play setup.

4. Configure wake-from-rest mode (optional)
You can leave the PS4 fully powered on, but rest mode is more convenient and uses less power. To allow Remote Play to wake the console:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Power Save Settings.
- Select Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.
Without both network options, a PS4 in rest mode may not respond when you try to connect from Android. The console also needs to remain connected to power and the network.
Install and connect the Android app
1. Install PS Remote Play
On the Android device, open Google Play and install Sony’s PS Remote Play app. Avoid relying on an unofficial client when the official app supports your console and Android version; the official setup is the path covered by Sony’s compatibility guidance.
2. Sign in with the same PlayStation account
Launch the app and sign in with the PlayStation account used on the PS4. A different account can prevent the app from finding the console, even when both devices are connected to the same router.
3. Select PS4
- In PS Remote Play, choose PS4 when prompted for a console.
- Allow the app to search for the PS4 associated with the signed-in account.
- If more than one console appears, select the PS4 you want to use.
For the first connection, Sony recommends testing while you are near the console. Do this before depending on an away-from-home session, particularly if it has been a long time since the account last connected to that PS4.

Choose touch controls or a physical controller
Touch controls
Touch controls are the quickest way to test the setup. After a Remote Play session starts, tap the Android screen to display the virtual controls. They cover part of the streamed picture and can feel less precise for games that require rapid camera movement, analog-stick control, or many simultaneous buttons. They are useful for menus, turn-based games, slower adventures, and short sessions when you do not have a gamepad.
DUALSHOCK 4
A DUALSHOCK 4 gives you the control layout designed for PS4. Sony lists Bluetooth support from Android 10 onward, but pairing and input support remain device-dependent. Put the controller into pairing mode according to its instructions, open Android’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller, and then return to PS Remote Play. If Android pairs it but buttons do not respond correctly, check the phone manufacturer’s controller-driver documentation before changing the console settings.
DualSense
Sony lists DualSense support from Android 12 onward. It can provide a modern PlayStation layout, but Remote Play on Android may not expose every DualSense feature. Treat adaptive triggers, advanced haptics, headset functions, and other controller-specific capabilities as optional rather than guaranteed.
Phone-mounted controllers
Sony lists the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition for Android 10 or later phones. It provides a handheld-style layout without requiring the phone to sit on a table, but fit, USB-C clearance, case compatibility, and current availability vary. Verify your exact phone model before purchasing any phone-mounted controller.
Network requirements and how to improve the stream
Speed targets
Sony states that Remote Play needs a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 5 Mbps as a standard minimum. For better performance, Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download. These figures are connection guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or latency.
| Connection guidance | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download | Sony’s stated standard minimum for Remote Play. |
| 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download | Sony’s recommendation for better performance. |
| Higher speed alone | Does not guarantee smooth play if Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, or distance causes instability. |
Use the most stable local connection
- Place the PS4 where its Wi-Fi signal is strong, or connect the console to the router with Ethernet when possible.
- Use a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal for the Android device when you are near the router and the phone supports it.
- Reduce heavy downloads, cloud backups, and 4K video uploads on the same home network during play.
- Move closer to the access point if the picture repeatedly drops quality or freezes.
- Restart the router and PS4 if the connection becomes unstable after long uptime.
Remote Play is interactive video, so consistency matters as much as the headline speed. Sony does not provide a latency guarantee on its support pages, and actual responsiveness varies with the network environment and, for cellular connections, the carrier.

- The feel, shape, and sensitivity of the dual analog sticks and trigger buttons have been improved to provide a greater sense of control, no matter what you play
Use Remote Play over mobile data
Remote Play can work away from home over cellular data, but Sony warns that it can use more data than most video-streaming services. Your carrier, signal quality, congestion, and plan allowance determine whether it works acceptably and whether additional charges or throttling apply.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open PS Remote Play’s app settings.
- Choose Mobile Data.
- Enable Use Mobile Data.
- Start a session and monitor the carrier’s data-usage indicator or account portal.
If the Android device is already connected to Wi-Fi when a session starts, Sony says the session continues using Wi-Fi. If cellular Remote Play fails, confirm that the setting is enabled, check the carrier’s restrictions, and test again in an area with a stronger signal. Do not assume that an unlimited plan guarantees uninterrupted Remote Play; network-management policies and local congestion still apply.
Playing from outside your home
Remote Play can connect while the Android device is away from the PS4, provided the console is reachable and both ends have a suitable connection. Before leaving home, complete one successful local connection. This verifies the account, app installation, console permissions, and controller pairing while troubleshooting is easy.
Leave the PS4 powered on or in rest mode with the two network-wake options enabled. If the console is switched off completely, the app generally cannot turn it on remotely. A home router, carrier network, or restrictive public Wi-Fi can also block or degrade the connection even when local Remote Play works.
Which PS4 games work?
Most ordinary PS4 games designed for a standard controller are the best candidates, but Remote Play is not universal. Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR or additional peripherals beyond the controllers it lists. Sony also excludes games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming service rather than run directly on your PS4.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Usually suitable: games launched and processed directly by your PS4 with standard controller input.
- Potentially unsuitable: PS VR titles, games requiring specialized peripherals, or titles whose required input is not supported by your Android controller.
- Not the same service: a game available through PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is not automatically playable through Remote Play from your own PS4.
The game’s packaging, store listing, or in-game requirements can identify mandatory VR hardware or other peripherals. If a title does not respond correctly after the stream starts, check whether it requires equipment that Android Remote Play cannot provide.
Best Value
- Wireless Connectivity: The DualShock 4 controller uses Bluetooth technology for wireless gameplay.
- PlayStation Compatibility: This controller is specifically designed for use with the PlayStation 4 console.
- Vibration Feedback: The controller's built-in rumble feature provides tactile feedback during gameplay.
- Adjustable Controls: The controller has customizable button layouts and analog sticks to suit your preferences.
- Long Battery Life: The controller is battery-powered and can provide up to 10 hours of gameplay on a single charge.
Android TV as an alternative screen
Sony documents a separate Remote Play setup for supported Android TV devices running Android TV OS 12 or later. The support guide names Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV as examples. This approach sends the PS4 stream to a television rather than a phone or tablet, but it still requires a PlayStation account and a supported controller.
The Android TV flow uses a QR-code sign-in step in Sony’s documented setup. Install or open PS Remote Play on the supported TV device, follow the on-screen sign-in instructions, scan the displayed QR code with the account device when prompted, and pair a compatible controller. TV-device compatibility is separate from ordinary Android phone compatibility, so Android 9, 10, or 12 phone thresholds do not certify an Android TV box.
Troubleshooting checklist
The app cannot find the PS4
- On the PS4, confirm Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play is on.
- Confirm the Android app is signed in to the same PlayStation account used by that console.
- Make sure the PS4 is powered on, or that rest-mode network wake has both required options enabled.
- Check that the PS4 and Android device have working network access.
- Test near the console, as Sony recommends, before trying from another location.
The connection starts and then drops
- Move the Android device closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
- Use Ethernet for the PS4 if available.
- Pause other large downloads and uploads.
- Run a connection test and compare the result with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- On cellular data, test a different location or Wi-Fi network and check carrier restrictions.
The picture is blurry, delayed, or blocky
These symptoms usually indicate changing bandwidth, interference, congestion, or latency rather than a problem with the PS4 game itself. Stabilize the network first: reduce competing traffic, improve Wi-Fi signal strength, and test the console over Ethernet. Sony does not publish a universal latency figure, so there is no official setting that guarantees a fixed response time.
Buttons or sticks do not work
- Confirm the Android version meets the controller threshold: Android 10 for DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth or Android 12 for DualSense.
- Pair the controller in Android Bluetooth settings before starting or rejoining the Remote Play session.
- Check the phone maker’s documentation for controller-driver support.
- Disconnect the controller from another device that may have claimed the Bluetooth connection.
- Use the app’s touch controls as a diagnostic: if touch input works, the stream is functioning and the issue is likely controller compatibility or pairing.
Mobile data will not start
Open the app settings and verify Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data is enabled. Check whether the carrier blocks or limits this type of traffic, whether the plan has reached its allowance, and whether the signal is strong enough. Sony cautions that mobile-data Remote Play may not work under all carrier and network conditions.
A game refuses to play
Check whether the title requires PS VR, a special peripheral, or another input device outside Sony’s supported Remote Play controls. Also distinguish a game installed on your PS4 from a title that is available only through cloud streaming; the latter is not automatically available through Remote Play.
A practical setup decision guide
| Your situation | Best starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want to test Remote Play without buying anything | Android 9+ with touch controls | The app provides on-screen controls and requires no separate gamepad. |
| You already own a PS4 controller and Android 10+ | DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth | It matches the PS4 layout, subject to handset driver support. |
| You have Android 12+ and a DualSense | DualSense over Bluetooth | It is listed as compatible, although some advanced features may not be available. |
| You want a handheld feel | A compatible phone-mounted controller | It keeps controls attached to the phone; verify fit and availability first. |
| You want to play on a television | Supported Android TV OS 12+ device | Use Sony’s separate Android TV flow with a supported controller. |
| You are traveling | Test locally, then use rest-mode wake and a reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connection | Local testing catches account and console-setting problems before you leave. |
Security and account considerations
Sign in only through the official PS Remote Play app and keep your PlayStation credentials private. If you use a shared Android device, sign out of the app when finished. Do not leave the console in an unknown location while signed in, and review which PS4 is activated as your account’s Primary PS4 if you no longer control an old console.
Remote Play exposes your console’s home screen and menus to the connected Android device. Anyone who can unlock that device and open the active session may be able to navigate the console until you disconnect, so use a screen lock and end sessions when you are done.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuick pre-session checklist
- PS4 system software is current.
- Enable Remote Play is on.
- The correct PS4 is activated as the account’s Primary PS4.
- Rest-mode network wake is configured if you expect to connect while the console sleeps.
- PS Remote Play is installed and signed in to the same account.
- Android version matches the chosen input method.
- Controller is paired, or touch controls are available.
- Network speed and stability meet Sony’s guidance as closely as possible.
- The game does not require VR or unsupported peripherals.
- Mobile-data use is enabled only when appropriate for your carrier plan.
Bottom line
PS Remote Play is the official way to play PS4 games on Android: the PS4 runs the title and Android acts as the streamed screen and control interface. Enable Remote Play and primary-console settings on the PS4, install the app, use the same account, and test locally first. Android 9 supports touch controls, Android 10 adds listed DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support, and Android 12 adds listed DualSense support. A 5 Mbps upload/download connection is Sony’s minimum guidance, while 15 Mbps in both directions is its recommendation for better performance. Expect the result to vary with Wi-Fi, mobile networks, controllers, and the game’s hardware requirements.
