To play a PlayStation 3 game on a PC, install RPCS3, install the official PS3 system-software file (PS3UPDAT.PUP), add a game dump made from a title you own, select Vulkan, and check the exact game in RPCS3’s live compatibility database. RPCS3 is an emulator and debugger; it does not provide commercial games. A successful launch still depends on the title, RPCS3 build, graphics driver, and your hardware.
What RPCS3 does—and what it does not do
RPCS3 is an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. The project describes it as “The world’s first free and open-source PlayStation 3 emulator/debugger, written in C++ for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD.” The project website also lists Android, but supported platforms, packaging and requirements can change, so use the current official download page for the build intended for your operating system.

RPCS3 supplies the emulation software, not Sony’s console firmware or a library of games. You must provide the official PS3 system software and game files from a game you own, following the project’s current Quickstart and setup guidance. A retail disc is a source for a dump; it is not automatically a PC-readable game installation.

PC and operating-system requirements
- Use a current RPCS3 build for your operating system. The project publishes builds for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD; the website’s platform list can change.
- On Windows, install the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022 identified by the RPCS3 project.
- Keep your GPU driver current before troubleshooting graphics or performance.
- For the graphics renderer, RPCS3’s setup guide calls for a GPU with Vulkan 1.2 support. Intel integrated GPUs are not officially supported by that guide.
- Check the individual game’s compatibility entry before buying or upgrading hardware. There is no universal “best PC” specification or guaranteed frame rate for every PS3 title.
What you need from your PS3 library
RPCS3’s guide expects a legally owned game dump in a supported folder or ISO format. The detailed dumping procedure is maintained in the project’s Quickstart documentation. The exact route depends on the source and format, so do not assume that every retail disc, computer drive or purchased download can be used in the same way.
#1 Best Overall
- Train and advance your abilities of two-wheel driving, barrel rolls and more in 6 thrilling game modes.
- Catch air and perform as many stunts and tricks to get the highest score.
- Collect and use a variety of power-ups to eliminate as many crash karts as possible to get the highest score.
- Hop into the tracks against Lightning McQueen and the gang to rev up for the ultimate challenge.
- Put your training to the test and race against your family and friends to become the ultimate champion.
If you are dumping a disc on a PC, you may need a Blu-ray drive that is compatible with the project’s current dumping instructions. The drive must be suitable for the specific procedure; an arbitrary optical drive is not guaranteed to read or dump a PS3 disc correctly. A controller is optional, not a prerequisite for installing RPCS3.
Step 1: Download and start RPCS3
- Open the official RPCS3 download page and choose the current build for your operating system.
- Follow the project’s Quickstart link for platform-specific installation and game-dumping directions.
- Install or extract RPCS3 according to that platform’s instructions, then launch it once so it can create its configuration and cache folders.
- On Windows, confirm that the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022 is installed if the program reports a missing runtime or will not start.
- Update the graphics driver before changing emulator settings. A driver update often matters more than an emulator option when Vulkan cannot initialize.
Do not download a PS3 firmware file or a commercial game from an unofficial mirror. RPCS3 itself is the software project; it is not a game-distribution service.
Step 2: Install official PS3 firmware
Get the correct file
RPCS3 requires official PlayStation 3 system firmware separately from the emulator and separately from each game. The setup guide identifies the update file as PS3UPDAT.PUP and directs users to obtain it through Sony’s update channels or from their own console. Use the current official source described by RPCS3 rather than a third-party firmware mirror.
Recommended Free Tools
Install it in RPCS3
- Launch RPCS3.
- Open File → Install Firmware.
- Select the downloaded
PS3UPDAT.PUPfile. - Wait for RPCS3 to unpack and install the firmware. Do not close the emulator while the installation is in progress.
- Restart RPCS3 if the program requests it, then verify that the firmware installation completed without an error.
Firmware is the emulated console’s system software. It does not contain your games, and installing it does not make a retail disc directly playable. If RPCS3 rejects the file, re-check that it is the official PS3 update file, that it was downloaded completely, and that you selected the file itself rather than a containing folder.

Step 3: Prepare game files from a title you own
Disc-based games
The supported route described by RPCS3 is to dump a game disc you own and use the resulting folder or ISO in the emulator. Follow the current Quickstart for the exact dumping workflow and supported hardware. A disc listing or a physical “PlayStation 3 game” purchase does not guarantee a usable dump or good compatibility.
Buying a disc and making a dump are separate steps. A standard PC Blu-ray drive may not be suitable for the project’s method, and a drive that can read ordinary Blu-ray movies is not automatically a drive that can produce a usable PS3 dump. Check the current hardware notes before purchasing equipment.
Digital purchases
The supplied RPCS3 setup material does not establish a current, universal procedure for converting every digitally purchased PS3 title into a supported game file. Do not treat a downloaded package, backup or account purchase as automatically ready for RPCS3. Use the project’s current Quickstart and title-specific documentation for any digital-library workflow, and do not substitute unauthorized downloads.
Folder and ISO formats
RPCS3’s setup guide describes both folder and ISO game formats. Keep the dump complete and unmodified while troubleshooting. If you have several titles, place them in a clearly named library folder, but avoid moving a game while RPCS3 is scanning it. The emulator’s menu can then add the location to its game list.

- 60 frames per second across all platforms
Step 4: Add the game to RPCS3
- Start RPCS3 after firmware installation.
- Choose File → Add Games.
- Select the folder that contains your dumped PS3 games. For a folder-format title, choose the library location in which RPCS3 can find the game’s installed structure; do not select an unrelated parent directory full of ordinary files.
- Allow RPCS3 to scan the location. The title should appear in the game list with its identifier and version information when the structure is recognized.
- If the game does not appear, confirm that the dump is complete, that you selected the correct directory, and that the format is one described by the current Quickstart.
Adding a game only registers its files. It does not install missing firmware, guarantee that the title will boot, or bypass a title-specific compatibility problem.
Step 5: Select Vulkan and make a first launch
Set the renderer
- Open RPCS3’s graphics configuration for the emulator or the individual game.
- Set the renderer to Vulkan, as recommended by the setup guide.
- Apply the setting and close the configuration window.
- Launch the game from RPCS3’s list.
Vulkan 1.2 support is a guide-level requirement, not a promise of a particular frame rate. If Vulkan is missing from the renderer list, update the GPU driver, verify that the GPU supports the required Vulkan version, and check whether the hardware is an Intel integrated GPU, which RPCS3 does not officially support according to its setup guide.
Check the exact compatibility entry first
Open RPCS3’s compatibility database and search for the precise game release you intend to run. Region, edition, updates, build and configuration can matter. The database changes frequently, so re-open the live entry close to the time you play rather than relying on an old video, forum post or a general compatibility percentage.
| Status | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Playable | The title is expected to provide a substantially complete experience in the listed conditions. | Read the entry’s notes and required settings; “Playable” is not a guarantee for every PC or future build. |
| Ingame | The title can run to some extent but may have significant bugs, missing features, crashes or progression problems. | Expect experimentation and check whether the reported issue affects the part of the game you need. |
| Other statuses | Entries can indicate that a title is loadable, has menus only, is untested or does not currently work. | Use the notes and date of the entry rather than inferring behavior from another game. |
RPCS3’s compatibility list is the authority for per-title status. A high-level claim that “PS3 games work on PC” is too broad to predict your result.

- Rising's stealth elements will emphasize Raiden's considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as "hunting stealth."
- Gameplay will focus on two key elements: swordfighting, and a style of stealth that is more fast-paced and action-oriented.
- "Cutting" entails sophisticated swordplay that lets players engage in third person melee combat, as well as precisely slash enemies and objects "at will" along a geometrical plane using a "free slicing" mode.
Controls: keyboard, controller and multiple players
You can configure keyboard input, a controller, or a combination. RPCS3’s FAQ describes support for multiple concurrent controllers and flexible combinations with keyboard input, so a physical gamepad is optional. Open the input or pad configuration, select the handler appropriate to your device, bind each PS3 control, save the profile, and test it at a menu before starting a long session.
If a controller is detected but buttons are wrong, choose the correct device handler and rebind the affected controls rather than changing graphics settings. For local multiplayer, connect each device before launching and verify that RPCS3 assigns each one to a separate player slot.

RPCS3 will not start
- Confirm that you downloaded a build for the correct operating system and CPU architecture.
- On Windows, install or repair the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022 required by the project.
- Update the graphics driver and restart the PC.
- Run the current build from its normal installation or extraction location instead of mixing files from different releases.
Firmware installation fails
- Use the official
PS3UPDAT.PUPfile, not a renamed archive or a file from an unofficial mirror. - In RPCS3, use File → Install Firmware and select the file itself.
- Download the file again if its size or checksum is uncertain, then retry.
The game is missing from the list
- Use File → Add Games and select the location that actually contains the folder-format game or ISO.
- Confirm that the dump completed and that the directory structure matches the current Quickstart.
- Do not assume that an ordinary disc image, an incomplete copy or a compressed archive is interchangeable with a supported dump.
Vulkan is unavailable or the game crashes immediately
- Install the latest driver supplied for your GPU.
- Verify Vulkan 1.2 support.
- Check whether the system relies on an Intel integrated GPU, which is not officially supported by the setup guide.
- Read the game’s live compatibility notes before changing options at random. A title-specific issue may not be fixable with a global setting.
The game boots but has graphical or progression problems
Compare your RPCS3 build, operating system, GPU driver and game version with the compatibility entry. Apply only settings documented for that title. Do not treat an unofficial patch or a setting suggested for another game as a universal fix.

You need help from the project
Use RPCS3’s FAQ and support channels, and include the system details and logs requested by the project. A useful report identifies the operating system, CPU and GPU, driver version, RPCS3 build, game title and region or edition, firmware state, renderer and the exact failure point. “It does not work” is rarely enough to distinguish a dump problem from a compatibility bug.

Choosing a game-file route
| Route | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dump an owned disc on a PC | Your own PS3 disc, a drive compatible with RPCS3’s current dumping instructions, storage for the dump, and the Quickstart procedure. | Not every optical drive can read or dump PS3 discs in the required way. |
| Use files from a legally owned digital title | A workflow documented by the current RPCS3 Quickstart for that type of purchase. | The general setup material does not verify one universal digital-dump process, so do not infer one or use unauthorized downloads. |
Whichever route you use, compare the resulting title with its live compatibility entry. The acquisition route does not override the game’s status, required settings or hardware demands.
How to decide whether your PC is ready
- Identify your CPU, GPU and operating system.
- Confirm Vulkan 1.2 support and install the current graphics driver.
- Check whether the GPU is an Intel integrated model, which RPCS3 does not officially support.
- Search the exact game in the compatibility database and read the notes, not just the status label.
- Only then decide whether you need a different GPU, more storage, a compatible Blu-ray drive or a controller.
This order prevents an expensive upgrade based on a general emulator claim. The game’s own entry is more useful than a universal hardware recommendation because RPCS3 performance and bugs vary by title.
What a successful first launch looks like
After firmware is installed, the game appears in the RPCS3 list, Vulkan initializes without an error, and the title reaches its menu or gameplay according to the compatibility entry. Test controls at that point, note any messages in the log, and compare unexpected behavior with the title’s current notes. If the entry says “Ingame,” reaching a menu is not evidence that the full game is reliable; if it says “Playable,” you should still follow the listed conditions.
