A PS5 cannot read PS3 game discs. The official way to play a selected original PS3 game on a PS5 is to stream it from the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, where available in your country and subscription tier. Some PS3-era games instead have separate PS4 or PS5 remasters or remakes that can be downloaded. If your game has neither option, a PS3 console remains the direct way to play the original disc. Sony has not established PS5 as a supported PS3-emulation platform.
What works—and what does not
Sony’s backward-compatibility documentation is unambiguous: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Putting a PS3 Blu-ray into either PS5 model will not install or launch the game, and owning the disc does not unlock a streamed copy automatically.

The practical answer depends on the exact title. Sony offers selected original PS3 games through the Classics Catalog as cloud-streamed games. A different selection of PS3-era releases has been rebuilt as PS4 or PS5 remasters and remakes. Those are new releases with their own licenses and installation files, not compatibility layers for your PS3 disc.

Check the game before choosing a solution
1. Search the current Classics Catalog
On the PS5, open the PlayStation Plus area and browse or search the Classics Catalog for the exact title. Look for a streaming option on that game’s page. Sony says original PS3 entries in this catalog are streaming-only, so the absence of a download button is expected.

Catalog membership is not universal. A game can appear in one country and not another, and titles can be added, removed or altered. Sign in to the account you will use for play and check the listing in that account’s country. A result found through a web search or another region is not proof that the game is available to you.
2. Search for a separate PS4 or PS5 edition
Use the PlayStation Store search for the title, then inspect the edition name and supported platforms. A listing that explicitly says PS4 or PS5 and offers a download is a separate remaster or remake. Do not assume that a PS3 entry in the Classics Catalog also has a downloadable edition, or that your PS3 disc grants ownership of it.
3. Decide whether the original release matters
Remasters can change resolution, frame rate, controls, downloadable content, sound or online functions. Remakes can alter artwork, levels, story presentation and mechanics. If you need the exact original release, a re-release may not be an equivalent substitute. When the game is absent from streaming and has no suitable PS4/PS5 edition, original PS3 hardware is the supported physical route.
How to stream a PS3 game on PS5
Requirements
- An active PlayStation Plus tier that includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. Sony currently identifies PlayStation Plus Premium as the relevant tier; plan names and benefits can change, so check the membership page shown in your account.
- A country or region in which the title and cloud streaming are offered.
- The exact game must be listed for your account. A subscription alone does not provide every PS3 game.
- A stable internet connection. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are service requirements, not a guarantee of perfect latency or image quality.
- A compatible DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Sony maps the original PS3 SELECT and START commands to the touchpad.
Start the stream
- Sign in to the PS5 with the PlayStation Network account that holds the eligible membership.
- Open the PlayStation Plus section from the PS5 home screen.
- Choose the Classics Catalog and search for the exact PS3 title.
- Open the game’s detail page and confirm that the edition is the PS3 streaming version, not a similarly named PS4 or PS5 release.
- Select Stream. The PS5 will establish a cloud session instead of downloading the PS3 software to its internal storage.
- When the session starts, use the on-screen instructions for saving, quitting and any game-specific menu commands.
The menu labels can be revised by Sony, but the decisive control is the game page’s Stream action. If it is missing, first verify the title, account region and membership before treating the absence as a console fault.
Internet, picture quality and cloud-streaming limits
Cloud gaming sends the game’s video from Sony’s servers to your PS5 and sends controller input back. Consequently, download speed is only one part of the experience. Wi-Fi interference, household congestion, distance to the streaming server and packet loss can produce delay, blocky video or sudden disconnections even when a speed test exceeds the minimum.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection when practical, especially if the console is far from the wireless router.
- Pause large downloads and 4K video streams on the same network while playing.
- Prefer the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band when the console is near the router and the signal is strong; use a wired connection when walls or distance make that unreliable.
- Test at the time you normally play. A single daytime result does not represent evening congestion.
Sony’s published figures are 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p. They describe the connection threshold for the service; they do not promise a fixed frame rate, resolution in every scene or the same responsiveness as software running locally.
Streaming also removes features that depend on local-console support. Sony’s Classics Catalog guidance lists these restrictions for streamed games: Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, camera, keyboard, mouse, PSVR, PS Move and third-party controller support are unavailable. If a particular game depends on one of those peripherals, streaming may not reproduce the original experience even when the title itself is offered.

PS3 controls on the DualSense
PS3 controllers had separate SELECT and START buttons. For PS3 games streamed on a PS5, Sony maps those commands to the left and right sides of the DualSense touchpad (the same mapping is documented for a DUALSHOCK 4). Press the relevant side of the touchpad until it clicks; merely resting a finger on the surface is a touch gesture, not a button press.
Games that use SELECT for an inventory or map and START for a pause menu may therefore require a deliberate left-side or right-side touchpad click. If a title does not respond, test both sides with a firm click and check whether the game displays an instruction overlay. Do not expect a third-party controller to solve the problem: Sony lists third-party controllers among the devices unsupported during Classics Catalog streaming.
When a remaster or remake is the better PS5 option
A downloadable PS4 or PS5 edition runs from the console’s storage and is not subject to a streaming session. It can be preferable when you want stable local responsiveness, offline play where the release supports it, or compatibility with features that streaming disables.
Evaluate the release on its own terms:
- Identity: confirm whether the store calls it a remaster, remake, port or definitive edition.
- Platform: verify that the product includes a PS5 version or a PS4 version playable on PS5.
- Content: check whether expansions, multiplayer modes and bonus items from the PS3 release are included.
- Save data: do not assume a PS3 save can be imported. Save compatibility is determined by that specific release.
- Disc ownership: a PS3 disc is not a license for the separate downloadable edition unless the publisher explicitly provides such an entitlement.
A remaster or remake is therefore a choice about which version you want to play, not a method for making the original disc work.
Using a PS3 when the PS5 options are unavailable
If the title is not in your region’s Classics Catalog and has no suitable PS4 or PS5 release, a functioning PS3 is the straightforward way to use the original disc. Insert the game into the PS3, install any required updates, and play it on that console. This preserves the original hardware environment but does not transfer the game to the PS5 or make the PS5 read PS3 media.
Before buying used hardware, check the console model, disc drive condition, controller availability and the game’s own requirements. Some games depend on servers or peripherals that may no longer be available, so “runs on a PS3” does not guarantee that every online or accessory feature still operates. The relevant item is a PlayStation 3 console; no adapter or external drive turns a PS5 into a PS3.

Emulation reproduces one console’s hardware and operating environment in software. The official Sony material for PS5 establishes disc incompatibility, selected PS3 cloud streaming and separate PS4/PS5 re-releases. It does not establish PS5 as a supported PS3 emulator, nor does it promise that unofficial emulator software will work on a retail PS5.

That distinction matters because online guides sometimes present experimental, modified-console or PC-based approaches as if they were PS5 features. They are not an official PS5 playback route, and their legality, security, performance and compatibility depend on circumstances outside Sony’s supported documentation. This article cannot promise that an unofficial emulator will run on your console or that it is permitted in your jurisdiction. For a supported PS5 solution, use the catalog stream or the specific PS4/PS5 release; for the original disc, use PS3 hardware.

The PS5 rejects the disc
That behavior is expected for a PS3 disc. Clean the disc only if you plan to use it in a PS3; changing PS5 settings, rebuilding the database or reinstalling system software cannot add PS3-disc support.
The game does not appear in the Classics Catalog
- Search the complete title, including subtitles and punctuation.
- Check the account’s country and the catalog shown after signing in.
- Confirm that the membership tier includes Classics Catalog streaming.
- Look for a separate PS4 or PS5 listing rather than assuming the catalog entry was renamed.
- Remember that Sony can change catalog selection and that an older listing or another region’s result may no longer apply.
The page has no Stream button
Open the edition details and verify that it is the original PS3 catalog version. If the title is not streamable for your account, the button will not appear. A download option for a PS4/PS5 remaster is a different product, not a replacement control.
The stream is blurry or laggy
Check the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p guidance, then move to Ethernet or a stronger Wi-Fi signal. Stop competing traffic and retry at a less congested time. If the issue affects only one title while other streams are stable, report the game-specific behavior through PlayStation support rather than repeatedly reinstalling the PS5 software.
SELECT or START does not work
Click, rather than tap, the left or right side of the DualSense touchpad. The left side represents SELECT and the right side represents START for streamed PS3 games. If the game still does not react, test the opposite side and check its own control instructions; some games use those commands differently.

Review the stream’s limitations before troubleshooting hardware. Sony lists camera, keyboard, mouse, PSVR, PS Move and third-party controller support as unavailable during Classics Catalog streaming. A remaster played locally or the original game on a PS3 may be the only way to use a required accessory.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the copy: if it is a PS3 disc, stop looking for a PS5 disc-install procedure; none is supported.
- Check the exact title: search the signed-in account’s Classics Catalog and PlayStation Store listing.
- Choose the version: select streaming for the original catalog release, or a PS4/PS5 remaster or remake when that separate edition meets your needs.
- Confirm service conditions: verify Premium eligibility, country availability and a connection meeting Sony’s published speed guidance.
- Check features: account for streaming restrictions, touchpad command mapping and any required peripherals.
- Use original hardware when necessary: if neither supported PS5 route exists and the original release is essential, play the disc on a PS3.
Keeping the answer current
The catalog is the live part of this decision. Sony can change the games offered, supported countries, membership terms, streaming requirements and feature restrictions. Recheck the game’s listing and the current PlayStation Plus support information whenever you start a new title or return after a long break. Treat older launch-era descriptions of the service as historical context, not a guarantee that a particular game remains available today.
The stable conclusion is narrower than “PS5 plays PS3 games”: PS3 discs do not work on PS5; selected original PS3 games can be streamed through the appropriate Classics Catalog membership; some titles have separate downloadable PS4/PS5 editions; and a PS3 is the fallback for original physical software.
