How to Play PS2 and PS3 Games on a PlayStation Console

Short answer: a PS5 cannot play an original PS2 or PS3 game disc. Use a PS2 for PS2 discs and a PS3 for PS3 discs. A PS3 may play some PS2 discs, but compatibility is limited to particular hardware and titles. On PS4 or PS5, the alternative is to find the game in the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog; classic PS3 games in that catalog are streaming-only.

Choose the route that matches your game

The right console depends on three details: the game’s original format, what you own, and whether you are willing to use a subscription and internet streaming. An original disc and a digital re-release are not interchangeable licenses.

What you want to play Most practical route Important limitation
Original PS2 disc PlayStation 2 PS5 cannot play PS2-format software from a disc. A PS3 is compatible with only some PS2 software, depending on its exact model and the title.
Original PS3 disc PlayStation 3 PS5 does not support PS3 discs.
PS2 or PS3 game without its original disc Search the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on PS4 or PS5 Only listed games are available, and catalog selection varies by country, plan and time.
Remaster or remake Check the store listing for that specific release A remaster or remake is a separate release. Owning an old disc does not automatically grant the newer version.

If you want the least uncertain solution for a physical collection, match the disc to its original console generation. If you want to use a newer console, check the exact title in the catalog before buying a subscription or giving away the old hardware.

Can a PS5 play PS2 or PS3 discs?

No. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide for model group CFI-2015 says: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That covers original PS2 and PS3 game discs, regardless of whether the PS5 has a disc drive.

#1 Best Overall
Sony Playstation 3 160GB System (Renewed)
  • Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
  • When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
  • 160GB system
  • Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
  • The best high-definition viewing experience available

A PS5 disc drive can read supported PS5 and PS4 game formats, but inserting an older PS2 or PS3 game does not install a playable version. There is no setting that unlocks the older disc formats, and an external USB disc drive does not change the console’s software compatibility.

What this means for a physical collection

  • Keep a PS2 if you want to use original PS2 discs.
  • Keep a PS3 if you want to use original PS3 discs.
  • Do not buy a PS5 expecting it to replace either console for disc playback.
  • Check for a separate remaster, remake or Classics Catalog release when you want to play on a PS5.

Playing original PS2 discs

Use a PlayStation 2 for the direct route

A PS2 is the straightforward choice for a PS2 disc because the game and console were designed for the same format. Insert the disc into a working PS2 and use the console’s normal game-start process. This route does not depend on a subscription catalog, a particular account region or an internet connection.

When obtaining a used PS2, inspect the console’s disc-reading performance, controller ports, memory-card slots and power accessories. Those condition checks concern the individual used unit; Sony’s compatibility documentation establishes the console’s role, not the quality or availability of any particular seller’s hardware.

Can a PS3 play a PS2 disc?

Sometimes, but not universally. Sony’s instruction manual for the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B model describes that system as designed for PS3-format software with “limited backward compatibility.” That wording is a warning not to treat every PS3 as a PS2-disc player.

Before relying on a PS3, verify both the exact model number and the specific PS2 title. A compatibility claim about one PS3 revision cannot be extended to every later or earlier revision, and a model that supports some PS2 software is not guaranteed to support your particular disc.

Sony PlayStation 3 Slim 320 GB Charcoal Black Console (Renewed)
  • New slimmer, lighter PS3 system, Wireless controller
  • 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
  • Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
  • Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.

How to check a PS3 before using it for PS2 games

  1. Find the complete model number printed on the console label or its original documentation. Record every part of the code, not just the “PS3” name.
  2. Identify the exact PS2 game, including region or edition if the disc has that information.
  3. Look for compatibility information that names both that PS3 model and the game. Do not rely on a listing that only says “backward compatible PS3.”
  4. Test the disc in the actual console if possible. Confirm that it boots, saves and reaches gameplay rather than assuming that a successful disc read proves full compatibility.

If you cannot verify the model-and-title combination, a PS2 remains the safer hardware choice for that disc.

Playing original PS3 discs

Use a PlayStation 3

An original PS3 disc is intended for a PS3 console. This is the direct local-play route and does not depend on whether the game is currently licensed for a subscription catalog.

A PS5 will not accept that disc as a playable PS5 game. Buying the same title digitally for a newer platform, where a separate release exists, is a different transaction and may provide a different version, feature set or save-data path.

What a PS4 or PS5 can and cannot do with a PS3 disc

Do not assume that putting a PS3 disc into a newer PlayStation creates a digital entitlement. For newer consoles, the supported alternatives are a separately sold re-release or an eligible listing in the PlayStation Plus catalog. The disc itself is not a substitute for either one.

Using PlayStation Plus on PS4 or PS5

PlayStation Plus can provide selected older games without the original disc. The service is a catalog, not a universal compatibility layer: a PS2 or PS3 title must be listed for your country and available under your plan. Sony’s catalog pages and console interface can change as games are added, removed or restricted by market.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity anywhere and multiple media format compatibility.

Classic PS3 games are streaming-only

Sony’s guidance says classic PS3 titles in the Classics Catalog are available through streaming only. You cannot download those PS3 classics to a PS4 or PS5 and run them locally in the way a downloadable PS2 classic might be offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming also means access is tied to service eligibility. If a title leaves the catalog, your plan changes, or your membership ends, access can change even though you once played it through the service. Check the current listing for the exact game before treating it as a permanent replacement for a disc.

Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium?

The required plan depends on the title, region and current catalog rules. Some classic-game features are associated with the higher PlayStation Plus offering, often marketed as Premium or, in some markets, a differently named equivalent. Do not infer eligibility from the plan name alone: open the game’s listing in your country and confirm whether it says download or stream and which membership is required.

Minimum internet requirement for streaming

Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide gives 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for cloud streaming. That is a minimum service requirement, not a promise of identical image quality or latency on every connection. A wired connection or strong, uncongested Wi-Fi can be more dependable than a connection that technically reaches the minimum but fluctuates during play.

Step-by-step: find a playable classic on PS4 or PS5

  1. Identify the title. Write down the exact game name and, if relevant, its region, edition or subtitle. Similar names can refer to different releases.
  2. Open the PlayStation Plus area. On the console, go to the PlayStation Plus section and open the games catalog or classics area available to your account.
  3. Search for the exact game. Read the individual listing rather than relying on a franchise page or a search result with a similar title.
  4. Check the access method. Confirm whether the listing offers download, stream or both. A classic PS3 listing should be treated as streaming-only under Sony’s stated catalog rules.
  5. Check membership and region. Verify the plan named on the listing and make sure your account’s country is the market you are checking. Catalogs differ by location and can change over time.
  6. Check the connection before streaming. Confirm that your broadband meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and close other high-bandwidth activity if the stream is unstable.
  7. Start from the listing. Use the displayed stream or download option. If no option appears, the game is not currently available to that account through that catalog.

This process is more reliable than buying a subscription first and hoping that a particular PS2 or PS3 game appears afterward.

Disc, catalog and re-release: what you actually own

Access type What it gives you What can change
Original PS2 disc Local play on a compatible PS2, or on a specifically verified PS3 model and title Hardware condition and model compatibility
Original PS3 disc Local play on a PS3 Hardware condition; it does not become a PS5 license
PlayStation Plus catalog access Play or stream a listed game while your account and plan are eligible Catalog membership, market, plan, title availability and internet service
Digital remaster or remake A separately published version for the platform named on its store listing Release availability, platform support and the terms of that separate purchase

The practical distinction is ownership versus access. A disc is tied to compatible hardware; a catalog game is tied to an account, plan and current listing; a remaster or remake is its own release.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every PS3 plays PS2 discs

PS3 backward compatibility is model-limited. The CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B manual’s “limited backward compatibility” language is evidence of that limitation, not a promise that all PS3 consoles play all PS2 games. Verify before buying a PS3 specifically for PS2 playback.

Assuming a PS5 disc drive means all PlayStation discs work

The PS5 Safety Guide explicitly excludes PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 format software from disc playback. A drive determines whether the console can read a physical medium; it does not add an emulator or a license for an older game format.

Confusing a catalog listing with permanent ownership

A title in PlayStation Plus is available under the catalog’s current conditions. Check the title page, plan and region each time you make a decision, especially if the game is the main reason for subscribing.

Expecting to download a classic PS3 game

Sony identifies classic PS3 catalog games as streaming-only. If you need offline play, the catalog route may not meet that requirement; use compatible original hardware or look for a separate release that explicitly supports local play.

  • Built-in Blu-ray player to give you the best high-definition viewing experience and pristine picture quality
  • 80 GB of hard disk storage for all your games, music, videos, and photos
  • This product is NOT backwards compatible

Using a similar title as proof of availability

Ports, remasters, sequels and regional editions can have different listings. Search the exact game and read its platform and access method before assuming that another version covers your copy.

Ignoring regional differences

The catalog available in one country is not a reliable guide to another. Sony’s US catalog and UK support guidance describe the service, but your account’s local catalog is the authoritative check for availability.

A decision checklist

  • You own a PS2 disc: start with a PS2. Consider a PS3 only after checking its exact model against the title.
  • You own a PS3 disc: use a PS3; a PS5 will not play the disc.
  • You own no disc: search the exact title in the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on your PS4 or PS5.
  • You require offline play: avoid relying on a streaming-only classic PS3 listing.
  • You are comfortable streaming: verify the catalog listing, plan, region and at least 5 Mbps broadband.
  • You want improved graphics or modern features: look for a separately released remaster or remake and check its own platform listing.
  • You are buying used hardware: confirm the model number, disc-reading condition and accessories before purchase.

Frequently asked practical questions

Can I play my PS2 discs on a PS3?

Only on PS3 hardware with the necessary compatibility for that specific game. Sony describes compatibility as limited for the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B model, so verify the exact model and title rather than assuming a universal feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play PS3 games on PS4?

An original PS3 disc is not the route to use on a PS4. Check whether the exact game has a separate PS4 release or appears in the PlayStation Plus catalog available to your account. Catalog availability is title-, plan- and region-specific.

Can I play PS2 games on PS5 without a disc?

Only when that specific game is offered as an eligible digital or streaming listing for PS5, such as in the current Classics Catalog. The PS5 does not create access merely because you own an original PS2 disc.

Will my saves transfer from a PS2 or PS3 to a newer catalog version?

Do not assume that they will. A catalog title, remaster or remake can be a separate release with its own save-data handling. Check the individual game’s support information before starting a long playthrough.

What should I check first if a catalog game is missing?

Check the exact title spelling, your account’s country, the current PlayStation Plus plan and whether the listing has been removed or changed to a different access method. Catalog status can change over time.
