How to Play PS1, PS2 and PS3 Games on a Modern PlayStation Console (PS5 Guide)

Short answer: a PS5 cannot play your original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. Sony’s current console support rules cover PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, while PS3 discs are explicitly unsupported. For compatible older games, the official route is a PlayStation Plus Premium membership and the Classics Catalog: download a title when Sony offers a download, or stream it from the cloud when streaming is the only option.

Availability is not universal. The catalog, membership benefits and streaming markets vary by country and can change, so the title page in the PlayStation Plus hub on your own console is the final check.

What a PS5 can—and cannot—play from the PS1, PS2 and PS3 generations

The PS5 does not function as a universal backward-compatible PlayStation disc player. Sony’s PS5 FAQ states: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” Sony also separately states that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. The same practical rule applies to original PS1 and PS2 discs: putting one in a PS5 is not a supported way to play it.

Original generation Original disc in PS5 Modern-console option Important qualification
PlayStation (PS1) Not supported Selected Classics Catalog games can be downloaded; selected games can also be streamed in supported markets Download or Stream appears only when Sony offers that option for your country, account and membership
PlayStation 2 Not supported Selected Classics Catalog games can be streamed in supported markets; an individual title may have a download option if Sony marks it that way Do not assume that a PS2 disc or every PS2 catalog entry is downloadable
PlayStation 3 Not supported A wide selection of PS3 classics is streaming-only through PlayStation Plus Premium Streaming availability depends on country and the live catalog

A remaster or remake is a different product from the original disc. If Sony sells a PS4 or PS5 remastered or remade version, that modern release may be downloadable on the newer console, but it does not make the original PS2 or PS3 disc playable and does not mean the original code is running from your disc.

The official route: PlayStation Plus Premium

PlayStation Plus Premium is Sony’s current modern-console route for supported classics. The tier includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. Premium does not turn every historical PlayStation game into an on-demand library: Sony licenses and publishes a changing selection, and the selection differs by region.

What your membership provides

  • Classics Catalog access: eligible PS1, PS2 and PS3 games appear in the PlayStation Plus catalog where Sony has made them available.
  • Download access: some titles, particularly selected PS1 releases, show a Download button. The option is title-specific, not a guarantee for an entire generation.
  • Cloud streaming: eligible PS1, PS2 and PS3 games can be streamed in markets where Sony supports the feature. Sony’s current catalog guidance describes a wide selection of classic PS3 games as streaming-only.
  • Account-based entitlement: access follows the PlayStation account and the applicable membership rules rather than ownership of an old physical disc.

Plan names, prices, catalog membership and streaming policies are changeable. Check the current PlayStation Plus details shown for your country before subscribing; do not rely on a price or catalog list saved from an earlier year.

Check availability before you buy or subscribe

There is no single worldwide list of playable PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. Sony can offer a title in one country, omit it in another, or change whether it is downloadable or streamable. A game’s original release region also does not guarantee that the same release is present in your local catalog.

Use the catalog on the console as the deciding source

  1. Sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use on the PS5.
  2. From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
  3. Select Benefits, then open Classics Catalog.
  4. Search for the exact title and open its product page.
  5. Read the buttons shown for your account and region. Download means the game can be installed on the console; Stream means it can be played through cloud streaming. Some titles show both, while others show only one.

If a game does not appear, or appears without the expected button, treat that as a current availability limitation rather than a console fault. Do not purchase a PS5 or Premium on the assumption that a particular favorite will be added later.

How to download a classic game

Downloading is the better choice when Sony provides it and you want to avoid dependence on a live stream. The game files are installed on the PS5, so play does not continuously consume streaming bandwidth. You still need enough storage space and an internet connection for the initial download and any updates.

  1. Open PlayStation Plus from the Games home screen.
  2. Choose Benefits and then Classics Catalog.
  3. Select a game that displays Download.
  4. Confirm the download and choose the PS5 storage location if the console asks.
  5. Launch the game from the Games home screen after installation completes.

The download option is a property of that catalog entry. It is not evidence that every game from the same console generation can be downloaded. Sony’s launch guidance specifically described original PS1 games as downloadable, while current catalog entries determine what is offered today.

How to stream a classic game

Streaming runs the game on Sony’s servers and sends the video and audio to your PS5. It is especially important for PS3 classics, because Sony identifies a wide selection of those games as streaming-only. The same account, region and membership checks apply as with downloads.

  1. Open PlayStation Plus from the Games home screen.
  2. Select Benefits, then Classics Catalog.
  3. Open an eligible game and select Stream.
  4. Wait for the service to test the connection and start the session.
  5. Play with a supported controller. If the picture becomes soft or the game pauses, stop other heavy network activity and check the connection guidance below.

Sony requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps for PlayStation Plus game streaming. Sony’s current support guidance states that 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p streaming. Those are service thresholds, not a promise of constant image quality: Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, ISP congestion and distance to the streaming region can still cause delay or reduced resolution.

Set up the network for a more reliable stream

Bandwidth is only one part of the experience. A connection that briefly drops packets or adds latency can feel worse than a slower connection that remains stable.

  • Prefer wired Ethernet: connect the PS5 to the router when practical. This removes local Wi-Fi interference from the console-to-router link.
  • If you use Wi-Fi, favor a strong signal: place the console near the access point, avoid crowded channels and keep large downloads, 4K video streams and cloud backups off the network while playing.
  • Pause competing traffic: another device can consume the same connection even when the speed test looks adequate at a quiet time.
  • Allow for congestion: evening slowdowns at the ISP or a busy streaming region may affect quality despite meeting 5 Mbps or 15 Mbps.
  • Use the console’s current connection test: run the PS5 network test when symptoms occur, then retry after closing other high-bandwidth activities.

There is no setting that converts a streaming-only PS3 catalog entry into a downloadable game. Network improvements can stabilize a stream, but they cannot change a title’s delivery method.

Controller behavior and streaming limitations

SELECT and START on streamed PS3 games

For streamed PS3 games, Sony maps the old controller’s SELECT and START functions to the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad. Click the left side of the touchpad for SELECT and the right side for START. This matters in games that use those buttons for maps, inventory, menus or two-player setup.

Features that are unavailable while streaming

Streaming has feature restrictions that do not apply in exactly the same way to an installed game. Sony’s streaming guidance lists these limitations:

  • Remote Play is unavailable.
  • Share Play is unavailable.
  • Broadcasting is unavailable.
  • PSVR is unavailable.
  • Mouse and keyboard input are unavailable.
  • Third-party controllers are unavailable.

Use a supported DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller and plan to play directly on the PS5. If a title depends on a peripheral, a camera, keyboard input or a feature blocked by streaming, the catalog version may not reproduce the original setup even when the game itself launches.

Disc ownership versus catalog access

Owning a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc remains useful only with hardware that supports that disc, such as the original console or another compatible system. A PS5 purchase does not transfer the disc’s license into the Classics Catalog, and inserting the disc cannot unlock the corresponding digital entry.

Catalog access is a separate, account-based service entitlement. It can end when a membership requirement is no longer met or when Sony changes the catalog. A downloaded catalog game is still subject to the service’s entitlement rules; downloading it does not convert it into a permanently owned copy independent of the account and plan.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“My PS5 accepted the disc, so the game should run.”

Acceptance by the drive is not compatibility. PS5 software support covers PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, not original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. Remove the disc and look for a supported digital catalog entry or a separate PS4/PS5 remaster or remake.

“I have PlayStation Plus, so every classic should be included.”

Only the applicable Premium benefits provide the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming described here. Even with Premium, availability is title- and region-specific. Open the game’s catalog page and verify the actual Download or Stream button.

“The PS3 game is listed, but there is no Download button.”

That is normally a delivery-method decision, not a failed installation. Sony identifies a wide selection of classic PS3 games as streaming-only. Select Stream and meet the connection requirements, or choose a different title that Sony marks downloadable.

“The stream looks blurry even though my internet plan is fast.”

Check stability rather than only the advertised maximum speed. Use Ethernet or stronger Wi-Fi, pause other traffic and retry outside a congested period. Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p figure are thresholds; they do not eliminate local or ISP congestion.

“The game asks for SELECT or START and my controller has neither label.”

On a streamed PS3 game, click the left or right side of the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad as appropriate. A light tap is not the same as pressing the touchpad; click the side required by the game.

Choosing between download and stream

Priority Prefer Download when offered Prefer Stream when offered
Connection You have unstable or shared broadband and want play to continue after the initial install You meet Sony’s broadband guidance and have a stable, low-interference connection
Storage You have free PS5 storage and want to avoid repeated network use You want to avoid installing files or have limited free storage
PS3 catalog Only if the individual catalog entry explicitly provides Download Often the only modern-console option for classic PS3 entries
Features You need local-console features that streaming blocks You are comfortable without Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR, mouse, keyboard and third-party controllers

For most readers, the practical decision is simple: choose Download for a title that offers it if your storage allows; choose Stream for a title that is streaming-only, especially among PS3 classics, and optimize the network before troubleshooting the game itself.

A dependable checklist

  • Confirm that the game is not being confused with a remaster or remake.
  • Sign in to the correct PlayStation account on the PS5.
  • Open PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Classics Catalog.
  • Check the exact title page for your country.
  • Verify that your membership tier includes the displayed option.
  • Choose Download or Stream exactly as shown.
  • For streaming, target at least 5 Mbps broadband; Sony states 15 Mbps for 1080p.
  • Prefer Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi and pause competing traffic.
  • Use DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controls; for streamed PS3 games, left touchpad is SELECT and right touchpad is START.
  • If the title is absent or the button is missing, treat it as a catalog or regional limitation rather than evidence that the disc should work.

The bottom line for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on PS5

Original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs are not a PS5 playback method. Play supported classics through the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog, using Download where Sony provides it and Stream where cloud play is the only option. Check the live catalog on your console, because country, title, membership and delivery method all matter. For streaming, maintain at least Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum—15 Mbps for stated 1080p streaming—and expect feature and controller limitations.
