PlayStation Plus Premium is required to play the PS1 games in the Classics Catalog. On PS5, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog. On PS4, open the function screen > PlayStation Plus > Classics Catalog. Choose an eligible game, then select Download for a local installation or Stream to play through the cloud. Sony’s official instructions are in the Classics Catalog support guide.
What you need to play a PS1 Classic
The Classics Catalog is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit. PlayStation Plus Extra provides the Game Catalog, but it does not include the Classics Catalog. Sony lists the tier benefits in its membership details and support matrix.

- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
- A PS5 or PS4 console signed in to the account that holds the membership.
- A PS1 title that is currently listed in the Classics Catalog for your country.
- For downloads: enough free console storage and a title that offers a download.
- For streaming: a stable broadband connection. Sony’s 2026 support guidance specifies 5 Mbps minimum broadband, and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
Membership access is not a permanent ownership license. A game remains playable through the service while your qualifying membership is active, but Sony can assign an end date and remove an individual title. Catalog lineups also differ by country. Check the live catalog on your own console before relying on a particular game; Sony’s catalog FAQ explains these availability limits.

Find PS1 games on PS5
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Scroll to Benefits, then select Classics Catalog.
- Open the PS1 game you want to play. Confirm that it is available in your region and that your Premium membership is active.
- Select Download to install the game on the console. If the title supports cloud play, you will also see Stream.
- After a download finishes, start the game from your Game Library or from the PlayStation Plus page.
The two buttons are title-specific. A game may be downloadable, streamable, or both, depending on Sony’s licensing and the country associated with your account.

Find PS1 games on PS4
- Open the PS4 function screen and scroll right to PlayStation Plus.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Open an eligible PS1 game.
- Choose Download or Stream, whichever the title and your region provide.
If the Classics Catalog option is absent, verify that the signed-in account has Premium rather than Extra or Essential. Also check the country setting of the account, because the catalog is regional.
Download or stream: which option should you choose?
Use a download when the game offers one and you have local storage available. The installation avoids dependence on a live cloud session and is generally the more predictable choice for long play sessions or unreliable broadband. Streaming is useful when you want to start without waiting for a full installation, but it depends on network quality and Sony’s streaming capacity.

When downloading is the safer choice
Choose Download if your broadband connection is inconsistent, if you want to avoid a possible queue, or if you need the features Sony disables during streaming. The game still remains tied to the active Premium entitlement; installing it does not turn it into a permanently owned title if Sony removes it from the service.

Choose Stream when the title offers no download, storage is constrained, or you want to test the game before committing to an installation. Connect the console to the fastest, most stable broadband path available. A wired connection can reduce local wireless variability, but Sony’s requirement is expressed as broadband speed rather than a particular connection type.
Streaming requirements and restrictions
Sony’s support wording is explicit: “To stream PlayStation Plus classics catalog games, you need to have the correct membership plan and a broadband connection with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps.” Sony also specifies 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are connection-speed thresholds, not guarantees of zero latency; congestion, Wi-Fi interference and household traffic can still affect responsiveness.

- Below the level needed for 1080p, the stream can reduce resolution.
- A queue can appear before the cloud session starts.
- Broadcasting, Share Play and Share Screen are disabled.
- Remote Play is disabled while the streamed session is running.
- HD Camera and PlayStation Camera are unavailable.
- Mouse, keyboard, PSVR and PS Move are unavailable.
- Third-party controllers are not supported during streaming.
If your television has a game mode, enabling it may improve perceived responsiveness by reducing the display’s own processing delay. This does not increase the broadband speed or remove a cloud queue.
Controller guidance
A DualSense wireless controller is a natural choice on PS5. Sony’s support documentation describes DualSense touchpad behavior for streamed PlayStation games and states that third-party controllers are not supported during streaming. On PS4, use a controller supported by the console and the specific play method; the third-party restriction cited above applies to streamed sessions.
Because streaming removes support for mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move and camera accessories, plan to play with the supported console controller rather than expecting a peripheral used with another game to work in the cloud session.

The Classics Catalog does not appear
- Check the subscription tier on the account currently signed in. Premium includes the Classics Catalog; Extra does not.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area again from the console’s specified menu path rather than searching only in the general store.
- Confirm the account’s country and compare the live catalog shown on the console. A title or the entire catalog can differ by region.
- If the membership was recently changed, verify that the Premium entitlement is active on the account you are using to launch the game.
There is no Download button
The absence of Download does not necessarily indicate a console fault. The title may be stream-only in your region, or it may have been removed or changed in the current catalog. Check the game’s available actions on the console and consult Sony’s current catalog listing.
There is no Stream button
Streaming is not offered for every title, console, country or account configuration. If Stream is missing, use Download when shown. If neither option appears, recheck Premium status and the title’s current regional listing.

The stream will not start or a queue is shown
A queue is a documented possibility, so wait for the session to become available rather than repeatedly launching the game. If the connection fails, stop other high-bandwidth activity on the network, move the console to a more stable connection, and retry. The 5 Mbps minimum is a floor; network instability can still interrupt a session even when a speed test reports a higher number.

For 1080p streaming, Sony specifies 15 Mbps. If available bandwidth drops below what the stream needs, Sony says resolution may be reduced. Check for competing traffic or wireless interference, then retry when the connection is stable. A television’s game mode can address display processing delay, but it cannot correct a bandwidth shortfall.
A controller or accessory is not responding
During streaming, third-party controllers, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, HD Camera and PlayStation Camera are unsupported. Switch to a supported console controller. If you need one of the disabled accessories or social features, download the title instead, provided the game offers a download and your console has room.
The game disappeared after you played it previously
PlayStation Plus catalog access depends on the current service entitlement and catalog listing. Confirm that Premium is still active and check whether Sony has posted an end date or removed the title. A prior download does not override a catalog removal or an expired qualifying membership.
Keep access predictable
- Check the live Classics Catalog before starting a long playthrough, especially when a title has an announced end date.
- Prefer a download for games you expect to play repeatedly, when the option is available and storage permits.
- Reserve streaming for titles without downloads or for quick access when your broadband connection is reliable.
- Remember that the PS5 and PS4 menu paths are different, so follow the instructions for the console you are using.
- Recheck Sony’s plan and catalog pages when you renew or change membership, because benefits, regional availability and removal dates can change.
