How to Play Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver on Your PC

You can play Pokémon HeartGold or Pokémon SoulSilver on a PC with a Nintendo DS emulator such as melonDS or DeSmuME. You will need an emulator, a game file you are legally entitled to use, and controls configured for both the DS buttons and touchscreen. The emulator projects document different BIOS, firmware, loading, and save procedures, so follow the instructions for the program you actually install.

“Heart & Soul” is not the official name of a single game; it refers to the paired Nintendo DS releases HeartGold and SoulSilver. The steps below apply to either edition.

What you need before starting

  • A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer supported by the emulator’s current release.
  • A current build of a reputable Nintendo DS emulator, obtained from its own official project site.
  • A game file that you are lawfully entitled to use. The emulator does not supply the game.
  • Optional keyboard, gamepad, mouse, or pen-style input device. HeartGold and SoulSilver use both physical buttons and the DS touchscreen.
  • A plan for backing up save files outside the emulator’s default folder.

Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver are Nintendo DS games. The Pokémon Company describes features such as navigating the Pokédex, managing the Bag, moving Pokémon in PC Boxes, and using touchscreen and button controls. A PC emulator reproduces the DS environment in software; it does not turn the games into native PC applications.

Choose a Nintendo DS emulator

melonDS and DeSmuME are two documented Nintendo DS emulator projects. Neither has been benchmarked here with a particular computer, controller, emulator build, or game image, so choosing between them should be based on setup documentation and the features you need rather than an unsupported promise that one runs HeartGold better.

Game loading The project page documents File > Open ROM. Use the current documentation’s ROM-opening command and file dialog; labels can vary by build.
BIOS and firmware The FAQ discusses DS BIOS/firmware requirements and a direct-boot setting. Follow its current setup guidance. Its FAQ says internal BIOS/firmware can load and execute ROMs; external system images add features but are not automatically interchangeable with melonDS files.

How to set up melonDS

The exact names and locations of files can change between releases. Treat the current melonDS FAQ as the authority for BIOS, firmware, and direct-boot details.

  1. Install the current desktop build. Choose the package for your operating system and complete the normal installation or extraction process.
  2. Read the BIOS and firmware section of the FAQ. melonDS documents the DS system files it expects and explains its direct-boot option. Do not copy files from an unrelated emulator simply because they have similar names.
  3. Start melonDS and configure the system settings. Set the language, screen arrangement, window size, and any audio or synchronization options exposed by your build.
  4. Map controls. Assign keyboard or gamepad buttons to the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start, and Select. Assign a mouse, analog stick, or other pointer to the touchscreen. Leave a convenient key for opening the emulator menu or pausing.
  5. Open your game file. Select File > Open ROM, browse to the legally obtained HeartGold or SoulSilver file, and open it. The game should appear in the DS screens; if it does not, stop and check the file format and the emulator’s current compatibility notes rather than downloading another copy.
  6. Test both screens and input modes. Move through the title screen, press physical buttons, open the Bag or Pokédex, and use the pointer on touchscreen controls. Adjust the screen layout and pointer sensitivity before beginning a long session.
  7. Save and make a backup. Save through the game’s own save command, close the emulator normally, identify the save file location described in the current documentation, and copy that save to a separate backup folder.

How to set up DeSmuME

  1. Get the current build and documentation. DeSmuME’s FAQ contains older sections as well as current guidance, so verify instructions against the project’s present download and documentation pages.
  2. Understand the BIOS choice. DeSmuME documents internal BIOS/firmware that can load and execute ROMs. It also describes optional external BIOS or firmware images for additional features. Follow DeSmuME’s own instructions; melonDS requirements do not automatically apply.
  3. Configure video and audio. Select a screen layout that keeps both DS displays visible and choose audio or synchronization settings suitable for your computer.
  4. Configure controls. Bind all DS buttons to a keyboard or controller. Set a mouse or analog control for the touchscreen, and assign a convenient way to switch focus between the game window and pointer input.
  5. Load the game file. Use DeSmuME’s current open-ROM command and select the HeartGold or SoulSilver file you are entitled to use.
  6. Verify saves. Create an in-game save, exit through the emulator’s normal close process, and locate the resulting save data using the version-specific documentation. Back it up before changing emulator builds or moving the game directory.

BIOS, firmware, and game files are separate things

A Nintendo DS emulator, DS system firmware or BIOS, and a Pokémon game file perform different jobs. The emulator supplies the virtual hardware; BIOS or firmware components provide system-level code when that emulator requires them; the game file contains HeartGold or SoulSilver itself. Installing one does not legally or technically supply the others.

Do not assume that a BIOS package found online is authentic, safe, or permitted to redistribute. Use the emulator’s official documentation for what it supports and how to configure it. If a setup guide offers an internal BIOS option, that option belongs to that emulator and should not be treated as a universal rule.

Can you download a HeartGold ROM if you own the cartridge?

Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s stated policy, not a complete legal analysis for every country or every personal-backup situation. The available evidence does not establish a universal rule that owning a cartridge gives you permission to download a ROM from the internet.

For that reason, this guide does not link to ROM repositories or explain how to obtain an unauthorized copy. Use only a game file you are legally entitled to use under the law that applies to you, and check local rules or qualified legal advice if you are considering making a personal backup from your own cartridge.

Configure controls for the DS touchscreen

HeartGold and SoulSilver divide play between buttons and the lower touchscreen. A keyboard-only layout can work, but pointer actions are usually easier with a mouse, trackpad, controller analog stick, or pen-style tablet.

Button mapping checklist

  • D-pad: movement and menu navigation.
  • A and B: confirm, cancel, interact, and context-sensitive actions.
  • Start and Select: menus and secondary functions.
  • L and R: game functions that use shoulder buttons.
  • X and Y: shortcut or menu functions as shown by the game.
  • Touchscreen pointer: selecting icons, operating menus, and any activity that expects a stylus.

Keep the pointer controls distinct from the emulator’s window controls. If a click is registering on the wrong screen, change the screen layout or touchscreen focus setting rather than remapping every game button.

Saving safely and moving to a new computer

  1. Save from inside the Pokémon game, not only through an emulator snapshot.
  2. Exit the emulator normally so the save is flushed to disk.
  3. Find the save directory using the current emulator documentation. The path differs by emulator, operating system, portable versus installed build, and version.
  4. Copy the save file to a dated backup folder or another storage device.
  5. When moving to another computer, install the same emulator family first, close it, place the save in the documented directory, and then launch the game.

Emulator save states are useful for temporary recovery, but they are not a substitute for the game’s normal save. Save states can become incompatible after emulator changes, while the in-game save is the format intended by the software.

What still works—and what does not

Single-player campaign

The main adventure, battles, menus, Pokédex, Bag, PC Boxes, and touchscreen interactions are the core functions an emulator is intended to reproduce. Actual compatibility depends on the emulator build, configuration, and game image; no particular combination has been tested here.

Official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

Nintendo UK states that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services for DS and DSi software ended on May 20, 2014. That discontinuation included online play, matchmaking, competitions, and leaderboards. Do not expect the original official online trading or matchmaking service to operate simply because the emulator is connected to the internet.

Pokéwalker

The Pokémon HeartGold instruction booklet states that “The Pokéwalker can only connect to Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver Versions.” The reviewed documentation does not establish that a PC emulator reproduces the Pokéwalker’s infrared or hardware communication, so treat that accessory as a Nintendo DS-era feature requiring its original supported hardware unless your emulator’s current documentation explicitly says otherwise.

Dual Slot functions

The manual says the Dual Slot function is available only on Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite hardware. A PC emulator does not automatically provide a second physical game slot, and no support for this feature is established here.

Choose the edition whose version-exclusive Pokémon and encounter tables you prefer. An emulator does not merge the two editions into one game; each requires its own lawful game file.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

The emulator opens, but the game does not

  • Confirm that you selected a supported Nintendo DS game file, not a compressed archive the emulator cannot read.
  • Recheck the emulator’s current BIOS or firmware instructions.
  • Use the project’s official compatibility and support documentation for your exact build.
  • Do not “fix” the problem by downloading a different ROM from an unauthorized source.

The touchscreen is unusable

  • Assign the pointer to the correct lower-screen area.
  • Check whether the emulator is in a dual-screen layout that changes pointer coordinates.
  • Try a mouse before changing gamepad mappings; touchscreen actions are often more precise with a pointer.

The game will not retain a save

  • Use the in-game save command and close the emulator normally.
  • Check that the save directory is writable and is not inside a read-only or protected folder.
  • Verify that the game file and save file have not been renamed inconsistently.
  • Back up the save before experimenting with settings or switching emulator versions.

Audio or speed is unstable

  • Return to the emulator’s default synchronization and audio settings.
  • Close unnecessary applications and test at the emulator’s normal speed rather than forcing fast-forward.
  • Consult the current project documentation because renderer and synchronization options differ by operating system and release.

Online features are unavailable

This is expected for the original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection: Nintendo discontinued those DS/DSi services on May 20, 2014. Changing emulator network settings cannot restore Nintendo’s discontinued official service.

Safety and maintenance checklist

  • Download emulator software from the project’s official source.
  • Scan downloaded installers and avoid bundles that advertise preloaded games.
  • Keep separate backups of in-game saves.
  • Record the emulator version when a setup works, so you can reproduce it after an operating-system change.
  • Read release notes before upgrading if you have an important save or depend on a particular controller mapping.
  • Use the emulator’s documentation for current BIOS, firmware, input, and save instructions instead of copying settings from an unrelated guide.

Bottom line

Install a current Nintendo DS emulator, configure its documented BIOS or firmware options, open a HeartGold or SoulSilver game file you are legally entitled to use, and map both buttons and touchscreen input. melonDS documents a straightforward File > Open ROM workflow and desktop support for Windows, macOS, and Linux; DeSmuME offers its own documented BIOS and input approach. Neither should be judged by an unverified compatibility promise. The single-player games are the realistic target on PC, while the original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Pokéwalker communication, and DS-only Dual Slot functions require separate caution or original hardware.
