The official way to play Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version today is to buy its digital Nintendo eShop release and play it on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo released the two games for Switch-family systems on February 27, 2026. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. The releases support local wireless trading and battling, but they do not support online play and will not be sold as physical Switch cartridges.
This guide explains exactly what you need, how to purchase and start the games, what multiplayer features work, which older storefronts are no longer purchase options, and how to avoid counterfeit copies, ROM piracy and modified-console risks.

The current official release
Nintendo’s current route is a digital purchase through Nintendo eShop. FireRed and LeafGreen are separate digital titles rather than a single combined package, so choose the version you want and purchase it individually. Nintendo’s announcement gives February 27, 2026, as the Switch release date and lists English, French and Spanish language support.

Nintendo’s support information states: “No, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these games.” You therefore need a compatible console, a Nintendo Account with access to Nintendo eShop in your region, and a payment method accepted by that storefront, but you do not need a recurring online-membership subscription.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
The games preserve their original connectivity features through local wireless connection. You can use the in-game Wireless Club to trade and battle with people nearby. Nintendo does not support internet matchmaking or remote online trading for these releases.
FireRed or LeafGreen?
The legal purchase process is the same for both versions. Select the version whose Pokémon, exclusive encounters or personal preference you want; the official materials do not describe a combined digital bundle. If you intend to trade with another player, each person needs access to a compatible game and system, and the connection must be local.
What you need before buying
- Console: A Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 system. These are the platforms identified for the current releases.
- Nintendo Account: Sign in with the account you use for Nintendo eShop. Account and storefront availability can vary by region.
- eShop access: Your console must be able to open Nintendo eShop for the relevant country or region.
- Separate game purchase: FireRed Version and LeafGreen Version are individual digital releases. Buy one or both titles separately.
- Optional online membership: Nintendo Switch Online is not needed to purchase or play either game.
The official announcement does not publish a universal price, storage requirement or physical-edition specification beyond confirming that the games are digital-only. Check the price and download-size information shown in your own regional eShop listing before confirming a purchase.
How to buy and play the games on Switch
- Connect and update your console. Start the Switch or Switch 2 and connect it to the internet so Nintendo eShop can load the current listing and deliver the software.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME menu, choose Nintendo eShop and select the Nintendo Account that should own the purchase. If more than one account is present, verify the account carefully; digital purchases are associated with the purchasing account.
- Search for the exact title. Search for “Pokémon FireRed Version” or “Pokémon LeafGreen Version.” Confirm that the listing identifies the Nintendo Switch-family digital release. Do not assume that a marketplace listing for an old cartridge is the same product.
- Review the listing. Check the displayed region, supported language information and price. Nintendo’s announced language options are English, French and Spanish. If the listing shows a different product or region, stop and verify before paying.
- Complete the purchase. Follow the eShop payment prompts. Nintendo’s official download guidance identifies Nintendo eShop and the Nintendo website as legitimate channels; use the storefront attached to your account rather than an unverified download site.
- Download the game. After purchase, allow the console to download and install the software. Keep the system connected until the download finishes, or resume it later from the HOME menu if your connection is interrupted.
- Launch from HOME. Select the newly installed game tile and start a new adventure. The game remains digital, so there is no cartridge to insert or physical card to misplace.
If the game does not appear after purchase
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Nintendo Account that completed the transaction.
- Check the HOME menu and the account’s eShop purchase history, then redownload from the account’s available software list if necessary.
- Verify that the console is connected to the internet and that the download has finished rather than remaining paused.
- If the eShop listing is unavailable in your region, do not substitute a ROM site or an imported counterfeit cartridge. Regional storefront rules and availability can differ.
Trading and battling with the Wireless Club
The Switch releases retain local wireless functionality. In practical terms, two players can meet in the same physical place, open the game’s Wireless Club and use the available trade or battle options. This is the official way to exchange Pokémon or battle another person in these versions.
What local wireless requires
- Each participant needs a compatible Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Each participant needs access to a compatible FireRed or LeafGreen digital title.
- The systems must be near one another so their local wireless connection can be established.
- Players should enter the Wireless Club from within the games and follow the on-screen connection prompts.
Nintendo does not describe a requirement for Nintendo Switch Online for this local feature, and its FAQ explicitly says the membership is not needed to play. Local wireless should not be confused with internet multiplayer: being connected to Wi-Fi does not turn these games into online matchmaking titles.
Rank #2
- Join up to 39 other wireless Trainers in the Union Room for a free-for-all, or connect with just two or three in the Direct Corner
- Prove yourself in the region's Pokémon League while single-handedly bringing down Team Rocket - then open up all-new storylines with unexpected twists
- Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge
What you cannot do online
These releases do not support online play. There is no official internet matchmaking service for battling strangers, and you cannot use an online connection to trade remotely with someone in another city or country. The supported multiplayer mode is local wireless between nearby players.
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription therefore does not add online trading or battling to FireRed and LeafGreen. Buying the membership for another Switch game will not change this title’s connectivity limits.

Nintendo’s support statement is explicit: “Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be available as digital software in Nintendo eShop. The games will not receive physical releases.” That means an official Switch cartridge is not part of the current product line.
Listings that advertise a “physical Switch copy” should be treated cautiously. They may be used original Game Boy Advance cartridges, an unofficial reproduction, a counterfeit, a case containing a download code or a listing for a different platform. None of those descriptions changes Nintendo’s official Switch format: the current release is digital software.
Why ROM-download sites and circumvention devices are not a legal solution
Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says: “The only way to download legitimate games for Nintendo consoles is through Nintendo eShop or via the Nintendo website.” The same guidance describes circumvention devices as piracy tools.
Rank #3
Downloading a FireRed or LeafGreen ROM from an unauthorized site, sharing a copied ROM, or using a device or modified console intended to bypass Nintendo’s protections is not the official legal route. Such downloads can also be mislabeled, altered or bundled with unwanted software. A ROM that claims to be “just a backup” does not become an authorized Switch release merely because the player owns an older cartridge.

Do not enter payment details on a site offering an unofficial “digital code” unless you can verify that it is an authorized Nintendo sales channel for your region.
Why the old 3DS and Wii U stores are not alternatives
The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops are not current places to buy a new copy of FireRed or LeafGreen. Nintendo ended online play and other online-communication functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024. Nintendo’s discontinuation information also describes the purchase shutdown for those stores and the limited ability to redownload content that was previously purchased.
Do not direct a new buyer to a 3DS or Wii U eShop in the hope of finding a fresh purchase. A person who lawfully bought software before the shutdown may still have limited redownload options under Nintendo’s account rules, but that is different from buying these games today. It also does not create a physical or online version of the current Switch release.
Choosing the right legal option
| Option | Official status | Purchase channel | Hardware | Format | Connectivity | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch digital FireRed | Official current release | Nintendo eShop or Nintendo website | Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 | Digital software | Local wireless trade and battle | No online play; no physical release |
| Switch digital LeafGreen | Official current release | Nintendo eShop or Nintendo website | Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 | Digital software | Local wireless trade and battle | No online play; no physical release |
| Old Wii U or 3DS storefront purchase | Not a current purchase route | Stores’ purchase functions were shut down | Wii U or Nintendo 3DS | Previously purchased software may have limited redownload access | Online communication ended April 8, 2024 | Do not use these stores to seek a new copy |
| ROM-download site or circumvention device | Not legitimate | Unauthorized website or piracy device | Often requires modified hardware or unsupported software | Copied or altered data | Not an official multiplayer service | Avoid; Nintendo identifies these channels as piracy-related |
| Marketplace “physical Switch cartridge” listing | Not an official format for these releases | Third-party seller | Usually advertised for Switch | Could be counterfeit, reproduction or a different product | Not established by Nintendo | Nintendo says the current games will not receive physical releases |
Language and regional availability
Nintendo’s February 27, 2026 announcement lists English, French and Spanish for the Switch releases. The eShop page shown to you is the controlling source for your account’s region, price and purchase availability, so read that listing before checkout rather than relying on a seller’s description.

- Features slots for 16 switch cartridges and 8 micro SD cards
- Measures 3.75" tall and 4" in diameter
- Switch Games pictured are not included
- Designed by ThinAir3D
- Bear and Wolf Studio is an officially licensed manufacturer and seller of ThinAir3D designs
A different regional account or imported listing may have different store terms. Changing regions simply to obtain a listing can affect payment, account and redownload behavior. If your local eShop does not show the title, check Nintendo’s regional information first instead of downloading an unofficial copy.
Troubleshooting common situations
“I bought Nintendo Switch Online, but online trading still does not work.”
The subscription is not the missing setting. Nintendo says online play is not supported for these games. Use the Wireless Club with another player who is physically nearby.
“I found a cartridge advertised as the Switch version.”
Nintendo says there will be no physical release. Treat the listing as unverified and look for the digital title in Nintendo eShop instead. If you are seeking a used original Game Boy Advance cartridge, understand that it is a different product and platform from the current Switch release.
“The game is missing from my HOME menu.”
Check the purchasing Nintendo Account, open the account’s eShop purchase history and resume or redownload the software. If another account made the purchase, sign in with that account. Keep the console online while the download completes.
Recommended Free Tools
“I want to trade with someone who lives far away.”
The official release does not provide online trading. Arrange an in-person session and connect through local wireless, or play separately without exchanging Pokémon.
“A website offers a free FireRed ROM.”
Do not use it as the legal route. Nintendo identifies its eShop and website as the legitimate download channels and describes circumvention devices as piracy tools. Purchase the official digital release instead.
A simple decision checklist
- Have a Switch or Switch 2? If not, you cannot use the current official release until you obtain one of those platforms.
- Does your regional eShop list the game? If yes, choose FireRed or LeafGreen and review the listing details.
- Do you need online membership? No. Do not buy Nintendo Switch Online solely for these games.
- Do you need multiplayer? For local trading or battling, meet another player nearby and use the Wireless Club. For internet play, these releases are not suitable.
- Are you considering a cartridge or ROM? Nintendo’s current versions are digital-only, and unauthorized copies are not the official legal option.
Bottom line
Buy the separate FireRed Version or LeafGreen Version digital title from Nintendo eShop, install it on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, and play without Nintendo Switch Online. Local wireless trading and battling are supported; online play is not. Nintendo has ruled out physical Switch releases, and its own guidance directs legitimate downloads to Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo website rather than ROM sites, counterfeit cartridges or circumvention devices.
