Steam Link lets your phone act as a streaming screen and controller for a computer running Steam. Install Steam Link on the phone, pair it with the computer, launch the game through that Steam session, and play with touch controls or an optional compatible controller. The computer—not the phone—runs the game, renders the graphics, and sends video and audio to the mobile device while your inputs travel back to the computer.
What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is the mobile client in a two-device system. Your gaming computer is the host: it must be powered on, running Steam, and able to launch the game. The phone is the receiving and input device. Steam’s Remote Play system captures the game’s video and audio on the computer, encodes that stream in real time, sends it to the phone over a low-latency network protocol, and sends your touch or controller input back to the computer.

That distinction answers the most common misconception: Steam Link does not install the PC game on your phone and does not make the phone perform the game’s PC rendering. The computer continues to do the work. The phone displays the result and forwards commands such as button presses, pointer movement, or touchscreen gestures.
Steam summarizes the basic process as: “Use Steam Link to connect your device to a computer that’s running Steam.” Once connected, you start the game from the connected Steam session rather than from a separate mobile version of the game.

What you need before installing
A computer that can run the game
The host computer needs Steam installed and must be capable of launching the particular game you want to play. Steam Link does not remove the game’s normal PC requirements; if the game cannot run on the computer, streaming cannot make it playable on the phone. Leave the computer running Steam while you use the phone.
A supported mobile device
Steam lists Android phones and tablets and Apple mobile devices among its supported device families. On the official Remote Play page, the platform minimums shown are Android 5.0 or later and Apple platform version 11.0 or later. Store availability and requirements can change, so check the current Steam Link listing for your exact phone or tablet before relying on an older operating-system number.
Do not confuse Steam Link’s requirements with the separate Steam Mobile app. Steam Mobile lists iOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later as its minimums. Those figures describe the Steam Mobile app, not the Steam Link client, and should not be used as Steam Link’s minimum requirement.

The phone and host computer must be able to communicate so that the computer can send the stream and receive input. Steam describes this as real-time encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol, but the official material used here does not state a phone-specific minimum bandwidth, a guaranteed latency, or a universal performance threshold. Do not treat the absence of a published number as a promise that every network will feel responsive.

Optional control hardware
You can begin with the phone’s touchscreen controls. A compatible external controller is optional, not a stated requirement. The useful question is whether the individual game’s controls are comfortable on a touchscreen; Steam does not promise that every PC game will translate well to a phone.
How to set up Steam Link on a phone
- Prepare the host computer. Turn on the computer you intend to use, open Steam, and confirm that Steam can launch the game. Resolve any game-starting problem on the computer before trying to stream it.
- Install Steam Link. On the phone or tablet, open its app store, search for Steam Link, and install the official app. Use the current store listing for your device because app availability and operating-system requirements can change.
- Open Steam Link and connect to the computer. Start the app and follow its connection flow to find and pair with the computer running Steam. Keep Steam open on the host while you complete this step.
- Start the game from the connected Steam session. After the connection is established, use Steam Link’s game interface to select a title that the host computer can launch. The game starts on the computer, while its video and audio appear on the phone.
- Choose how to control it. Try the on-screen controls first, or connect a compatible controller if the game’s controls are awkward. Input is sent from the phone or controller back to the host computer.
If a pairing screen presents a code or an on-screen confirmation, complete that prompt on the computer. The exact wording and layout can change between app versions, so follow the labels shown by the current Steam Link release rather than an older screenshot.
Touchscreen controls versus a controller
Touch controls are the quickest way to test a game because they require no additional hardware. They can be adequate when a title uses a small number of buttons or a simple interface. They may be less comfortable when the game expects precise analog movement, many simultaneous commands, a physical trigger, or a mouse-like pointer.
An external controller can make streamed games easier to play, particularly when the on-screen layout obscures part of the display or when physical sticks and buttons are important. Steam’s Remote Play information supports controller use, but it does not identify a model that works with every phone, nor does it establish universal compatibility among phones, operating systems, and games. Check the controller manufacturer’s compatibility information for your device before purchasing.

| Control method | What it involves | When it may suit you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone touchscreen | On-screen controls send input through Steam Link. | Useful for trying a game without extra equipment or for titles with simple controls. | Comfort and precision vary by game; Steam does not promise suitable mobile controls for every PC title. |
| External controller | A compatible controller sends physical-button and stick input through the phone to the host computer. | Helpful when a game needs precise, repeated, or numerous physical inputs. | No particular model or universal phone compatibility is established; verify support for your own device. |
Game-by-game suitability matters more than the fact that a title appears in your Steam library. A game can launch correctly and still feel poor to play if its interface was designed around a keyboard and mouse and offers no practical touch arrangement.
How streaming affects what you see and feel
The computer remains responsible for running the game, while the phone receives a live video-and-audio stream. Because the picture is transmitted rather than rendered locally, your experience depends on the path between the two devices as well as on the host computer’s ability to run the game.
Steam characterizes its technology as real-time encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. That describes the design goal, not a guaranteed response time. The official information does not publish a numeric latency promise or a minimum bandwidth figure for phones. A connection that is technically sufficient to pair the devices may still feel unsuitable for a timing-sensitive game if the stream or returned input is delayed.

If the game launches but controls feel uncomfortable, the issue may be the control scheme rather than the connection. Can you use Steam Link away from home?
Steam’s Remote Play page promotes streaming games from a computer to other devices and describes playing away from the computer. That establishes the intended capability, but the source used for this guide does not provide a detailed away-from-home setup, a required upload or download speed, router instructions, or a performance guarantee over the internet.
If you want to try remote play away from your usual location, begin with the basic arrangement: leave the host computer running Steam and make sure it can launch the game, then open Steam Link on the phone and attempt the connection. Treat successful pairing and acceptable play as separate questions. A connection may be possible while a particular game remains uncomfortable because of delay or because its controls do not suit the phone.
Do not describe Steam Link as a way to play when the host computer is completely unavailable. The computer is the machine that runs the game; the phone is the client that receives the stream.

Games that already expose practical controller input
Titles with a controller-friendly interface are usually easier to operate from a phone paired with a physical controller. Steam says many games have control schemes optimized for popular titles, but that is not a guarantee for every game in the library. Check the individual game’s control options and be prepared to adjust your method.
Best Value
- Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Games with simple or forgiving input
A game with a limited set of commands may be manageable with on-screen controls. This is a suitability judgment, not a technical compatibility promise: Steam Link can connect to the host while the game’s touch layout remains inconvenient.
Keyboard-and-mouse-dependent games
Games that rely on many simultaneous keyboard commands or precise pointer movement can be difficult on a phone. A controller may improve the experience, but it cannot guarantee that every keyboard-and-mouse interaction has a comfortable equivalent. If the game remains awkward after trying an external controller, choose a title with a control scheme better suited to the device.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Steam Link cannot find or connect to the computer
- Confirm that the intended host computer is powered on and that Steam is open.
- Check that Steam can launch the game directly on the computer. A game that does not start locally will not start through the phone.
- Reopen Steam Link and repeat its connection flow, following the current prompts shown by the app.
- Verify that the phone is using the network path through which it is meant to reach the host. The official material does not specify a single router or bandwidth configuration, so avoid assuming that one setup applies to every network.
The game starts on the computer but the phone shows no usable session
- Keep Steam running on the host and return to the connected Steam session in Steam Link.
- Check whether the game is actually launching on the computer rather than waiting for a prompt or error there.
- Close and reopen the Steam Link app, then reconnect to the same host.
The controls feel wrong
- Determine whether the problem is the game’s control design rather than the stream itself. Steam does not promise suitable phone controls for every PC game.
- Try a compatible external controller if the title needs physical sticks, triggers, or many simultaneous inputs.
- If the game remains difficult, select a title whose control scheme is better suited to touchscreen play or controller input.
The stream feels delayed or unreliable
- Remember that Steam’s low-latency description is not a numeric performance guarantee.
- Check the host computer and the phone’s connection before blaming the game’s controls.
- Test a less timing-sensitive game to separate a control-suitability problem from a streaming-response problem.
These checks stay within what Steam Link requires: a running Steam host, a connected client, a game that launches on the host, and controls that the chosen game can use. Steam’s official material does not establish model-specific controller lists, phone-specific bandwidth numbers, or a complete troubleshooting matrix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you have access to the host computer? It must run Steam and the game while you play.
- Is your phone supported? Steam lists Android and Apple mobile families; check the current store listing for exact device and operating-system availability.
- Will touch controls be enough? Start without extra hardware, then add a compatible controller if the game’s inputs are uncomfortable.
- Is the game suitable? Launch ability does not guarantee a good mobile control experience.
- Are you playing away from home? Steam promotes the capability, but published material here does not give network-speed, router, or performance requirements.
If all five answers are favorable, Steam Link is the straightforward way to put your PC game session on a phone: install the client, connect it to the Steam host, launch the game, and use the control method that fits that title.
