Use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription in both the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, restart Windows after recent updates, reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe, then install the game from Microsoft Store’s My Library when it is listed there. If launching still fails, repair or reinstall Gaming Services and restart again. Cloud Gaming is a separate fallback for supported titles, plans, devices and regions; it does not fix a broken local Xbox sign-in.
What to do first
PC Game Pass entitlement follows the Microsoft account that holds the subscription. The Xbox app and Microsoft Store can appear to be open and online while one of them is using a different account or has an unhealthy Windows sign-in token. That is why a browser login or normal web browsing does not prove that the desktop apps are authenticated correctly.

- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox separately.
- Check the account shown in each app and sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass.
- If Windows was updated recently, restart the PC before trying an installation.
- Reset the Store cache by pressing Windows + R, entering
wsreset.exe, and selecting OK. - In Microsoft Store, open My Library and select the download icon for the game if it is listed.
- If the game installs but will not start, repair Gaming Services and Xbox, restart, and test again.
Work through those steps in order. They separate an account problem from a Store-cache problem, an installation problem and a Gaming Services launch problem.

Why the Xbox app can say you are offline when internet access works
Windows gaming uses several connected components rather than one login screen. The Store handles app licensing and installation, the Xbox app presents the PC Game Pass catalog and social features, and Gaming Services helps Windows start installed Game Pass titles. A failure in one component can produce an “offline,” “not connected” or sign-in message even while websites load normally.

The most common early check is therefore account alignment, not your router. A subscription attached to Account A will not authorize a Store or Xbox session running as Account B. Likewise, signing into a Microsoft website successfully does not refresh a damaged token held by a desktop app.
Step 1: verify the Microsoft account in both apps
Check Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the account icon in the Store window.
- Confirm that the displayed account is the one that pays for or receives PC Game Pass.
- If it is wrong, sign out, then sign in with the subscription-owning account.
Check Xbox
- Open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Open the account menu and inspect the signed-in address.
- Use the same Microsoft account you confirmed in Store.
- Close and reopen Xbox after changing accounts so it requests a fresh session.
Do not assume that a family member’s Windows account, a work account or a browser profile is the account that owns the subscription. If the two apps show different addresses, correct that mismatch before attempting repairs.
Step 2: restart after a Windows update
Microsoft notes that a PC updated recently may need a restart before Store apps can be installed. A shutdown and power-on is not always equivalent to a Windows restart when Fast Startup is enabled, so use the normal Start > Power > Restart command.
After Windows returns, open Store first and allow it a moment to load your account. Then open Xbox and try the sign-in or installation again. If the problem began immediately after an update, this restart is a required checkpoint rather than an optional suggestion.
Step 3: reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
The documented Store-cache reset does not delete your installed games. It clears temporary Store data that can prevent the library or licensing view from loading.

- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeexactly. - Select OK.
- Wait while a blank command window appears. Microsoft says it normally remains open for about ten seconds.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically when the reset finishes.
Sign in to Store again if prompted, then check My Library. If the Store does not open automatically, launch it from the Start menu after the command window closes and repeat the account check.
Step 4: install the game from Microsoft Store’s My Library
Microsoft documents My Library as the place to find and install apps and games on a PC. This gives you a local installation route when the Xbox app’s catalog or sign-in screen is malfunctioning.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library or My Library, depending on the current Store label.
- Find the PC Game Pass title in the list.
- Select the download or install icon.
- Choose an available drive or folder if Store asks where to install it.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before launching the game.
The Store may not show every title for every account. Availability can vary with region, family settings, Windows compatibility and account authorization. A missing game is therefore not proof that the subscription has expired; first confirm the account and those eligibility conditions.
Installing through Store does not remove the need for the Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass. Store must be able to validate that entitlement, and the game may still depend on Gaming Services when it starts.
Step 5: repair Gaming Services and the Xbox app
Gaming Services is a required dependency for starting PC Game Pass games. If Store can install a title but selecting Play does nothing, the game closes immediately or Windows reports a Gaming Services error, repair this component before reinstalling the game.

Use Windows repair controls
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Gaming Services, open its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Repeat the process for the Xbox app: open its Advanced options and select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its data. If repair does not change the behavior, return to the same Advanced options screen and use Reset for the affected app. Reset can remove local app data and require another sign-in, so have the subscription account ready.

Microsoft-hosted troubleshooting guidance also recommends reinstalling Gaming Services and restarting before trying the Xbox app again. Use the current Gaming Services Repair Tool supplied through Microsoft’s Windows gaming support, or the reinstall option exposed by your Windows installation. Follow the tool’s prompts, let it complete, restart the PC, then sign in to Store and Xbox with the same account.
Avoid downloading unofficial “gaming service” installers. They can replace the component with an untrusted package and make account or licensing diagnosis harder.
Step 6: retry and isolate the failing component
At this point, test one path at a time. The result tells you which component still needs attention.
Microsoft Store works, Xbox does not
If Store signs in, displays your library and installs the title, the local entitlement and download path are functioning. Launch the game from the Store-installed entry or its Start-menu shortcut where available. You can continue using Xbox for catalog and social functions while its sign-in is repaired.

Xbox signs in, but installation fails
Use Store’s My Library route. A successful Xbox login does not make Store irrelevant: Store remains the Windows installation and licensing component.
Neither app can authenticate
Check the Microsoft account status, install pending Windows updates, verify the Windows region and family settings, and check Microsoft service status. These checks matter because Store availability and authorization can vary by region, family restrictions, compatibility and account state. Repeating cache resets will not correct an account restriction or a broad service outage.
The game installs but will not launch
Focus on Gaming Services first. Use Repair, then Reset if necessary, restart Windows, and use the Microsoft Gaming Services repair or reinstall tool if the dependency remains broken. Test one installed Game Pass title after each change so you know which action helped.

Yes, when the title appears in My Library for the subscription-owning account and is available for your Windows device and region. Microsoft Store is a legitimate local installation path; you do not need the Xbox app’s catalog screen to begin every download.
There are limits. Store cannot grant access to a title that is excluded from your plan, unavailable in your region, blocked by family settings, incompatible with the device or not authorized for the account. It also does not bypass Gaming Services. The Store can complete the download while Gaming Services is still unable to launch the game, which is why repair belongs in the recovery sequence.
Local installation versus Xbox app versus Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming is therefore a temporary alternative, not a sign-in repair. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance lists it among the available gaming options, but the catalog and availability vary. If your title, plan, device or region is unsupported, streaming will not provide a workaround.
Diagnose the “not connected” message without guessing
Browser works, desktop apps fail
Treat this as an app-session problem first. Recheck the account in Store and Xbox, restart after updates, and run wsreset.exe. A working browser proves that the PC can reach Microsoft websites; it does not prove that the Store and Xbox tokens are valid.
Store library is empty
Confirm the account address, then check region, family settings and subscription authorization. If the account is correct and the library remains empty, sign out and back in after the Store reset rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

The download button is missing
Look for a compatibility or availability restriction. Microsoft Store can vary its catalog by region, device compatibility and account authorization. The Xbox app cannot override those restrictions.
Download completes but Play fails
Repair Gaming Services, repair Xbox, restart, and use the Microsoft repair or reinstall tool if needed. This symptom points to the launch dependency rather than the original download.
One title fails while another starts
Check that the affected title is still included in your plan and available for your account and region. Then test Gaming Services with another installed title. A single-title availability or compatibility issue should not be treated as proof that every Game Pass installation is broken.
Checks that prevent wasted repairs
- Account: Store and Xbox show the same Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass.
- Windows state: The PC has been restarted after any recent update.
- Store cache:
wsreset.exehas completed and Store reopened. - Library: The title appears in My Library before you expect Store to install it.
- Eligibility: Region, family settings, Windows compatibility and account authorization allow the title.
- Gaming Services: Repair or reinstall has completed, followed by a restart, when an installed game will not launch.
- Service health: Microsoft account or gaming-service status has been checked if both apps fail to authenticate.
These checks keep the diagnosis focused. Resetting every app, deleting game files or changing network settings cannot compensate for a mismatched account or an unavailable title.
What outcome to expect
The fastest successful route is usually: align the account, restart Windows, reset Store, install from My Library, then repair Gaming Services if launch fails. This restores local play without waiting for the Xbox app’s catalog screen to recover. If Store cannot authorize the title or the game is not available for your region, device or plan, no local installation path can bypass that eligibility decision. Cloud Gaming may let you play a supported title while local components are being repaired, but it remains subject to its own plan, device, region and streaming requirements.
