Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Nintendo Switch is a turn-based role-playing game built around exploration, timed attacks, adaptable partners and paper transformations. To make progress, follow the story toward the Crystal Stars, inspect suspicious scenery, switch partners when an obstacle or enemy calls for a different ability, and use Action Commands to improve attacks or reduce incoming damage.
The Switch edition adds revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, more accessible quick-travel pipes and the Partner Ring. This guide explains the controls and battle loop you need for a first playthrough, how to choose level-up resources and badges, what to do when a puzzle stops you, and how to install the documented software update.

The adventure follows Mario through a paper-styled world as he pursues the Crystal Stars. It combines overworld puzzles, character conversations, collectible upgrades and turn-based battles. Your choices are not limited to selecting commands: timing, partner selection, badges and level-up resources all affect how efficiently you solve encounters.

Start with this first-session routine
- Explore the current area. Talk to characters, inspect unusual scenery and test paths that look different from ordinary walls or floors. Story objectives point you toward the next Crystal Star, but optional-looking details often signal a route, item or puzzle.
- Test Mario’s paper transformations. Mario can fold into a plane to cross gaps and turn sideways to pass through narrow openings. Later transformations include becoming a tube or a boat. These are functional puzzle tools, not only visual effects.
- Choose a partner for the immediate problem. Partners work in the field and in battle. If a route or enemy does not respond to your current partner, hold L outside battle to open the Partner Ring and select another available partner.
- Enter battles deliberately. Pick an attack, item, partner move or special move, then watch for the on-screen Action Command. Pressing at the correct time can strengthen an attack; timing your defense when an enemy attacks reduces the damage you take.
- Record what you learn. When Goombella is with you, X can provide information about nearby places and people. In battle, her Tattle ability reveals an unfamiliar enemy’s current statistics and weaknesses, and that information remains available the next time you meet the same enemy.
- Spend progression resources after a level-up. Select Heart Points for more health, Flower Points for more frequent powerful moves, or Badge Points for a larger badge loadout. Pick the resource that addresses the problem you are actually having rather than following a supposedly universal build.
If an object or route makes no sense, continue with the story instead of repeatedly testing the same spot. Nintendo’s beginner guidance recommends returning after you learn a new ability or meet someone who can help. A partner hint is available with ZL.
How exploration and paper abilities work
The world is designed so that visual details carry mechanical information. A gap may be a signal to use the plane transformation; a slit or narrow passage can call for Mario’s sideways form; water routes may require the boat transformation; and a low, open path can be suited to the tube form. You do not need to solve every conspicuous feature the first time you see it.
Use a failure as a route clue
When Mario cannot interact with an object, treat that result as information. Check whether a different partner can affect it, whether the story has introduced the required ability, or whether the area is meant to be revisited. Progressing to another room or story event can unlock the missing solution. This approach prevents long backtracking loops and matches Nintendo’s advice to move on and return later.

Press ZL outside battle to ask a partner for a hint. With Goombella present, press X to learn about nearby people or locations. Her comments can point out a relevant character or place when the next objective is unclear. Hints do not replace exploration, but they are useful when you have exhausted the obvious exits.

Use quick travel when revisiting
The Switch edition has more accessible quick-travel pipes than the original release. Once a pipe is available, use it to reduce the time spent crossing familiar areas while checking a newly opened route or revisiting an earlier puzzle.
Partners: choose for the obstacle and the enemy
Partners are active tools rather than permanent party decorations. Each has a distinct field and combat role, so the best choice changes with the situation. Hold L outside battle to open the Partner Ring and switch quickly. During battle, Y swaps the active partner position with Mario, letting you arrange who is exposed to the next attack or who performs the next action.
| Partner | What the official guidance establishes | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Goombella | Provides hints; X gives information about nearby places and people; Tattle reveals an enemy’s current statistics and weaknesses, with the information retained for later encounters. | Use her early against an unfamiliar enemy and when the next route or character is unclear. Her Tattle record turns later fights into informed decisions. |
| Yoshi | Has distinct field and battle abilities described in Nintendo’s partner guide. | Try Yoshi when the current obstacle or enemy appears to require a different partner function; switch through the Partner Ring rather than committing to one partner everywhere. |
| Koops | Has distinct field and battle abilities described in Nintendo’s partner guide. | Choose Koops when his particular field or combat function fits the obstacle or target you are facing. |
| Madame Flurrie | Has distinct field and battle abilities described in Nintendo’s partner guide. | Test Flurrie when a puzzle or enemy rewards her specialized role. |
| Admiral Bobbery | Has distinct field and battle abilities described in Nintendo’s partner guide. | Use Bobbery when his specialized field or battle ability matches the situation. |
The official partner descriptions do not establish one permanently optimal partner. Instead, treat the roster as a toolkit: identify what the area or enemy is asking you to do, then equip the partner whose ability addresses it. Nintendo’s swappable-partners guide shows the partners’ distinct roles.

Combat takes place in turns before an audience. You choose an action for Mario and an action for the partner, then execute the selected moves. The available choices include normal attacks, partner moves, items and special moves. The opposing side takes its turns according to the battle order, so deciding who acts and when matters as much as selecting a move.

- Assess the enemies. If you do not know a foe, use Goombella’s Tattle to reveal its current statistics and weaknesses. The record is retained for future encounters with the same enemy.
- Select Mario’s action. Choose an attack, item or special move that fits the enemy’s weakness and your available resources.
- Select the partner’s action. Use the partner whose move can exploit the enemy or provide the field-tested advantage you need. You can use Y to swap the partner’s position with Mario during battle.
- Perform the Action Command. Follow the on-screen timing cue. A successful input can improve the attack. When an enemy attacks, a correctly timed defensive input reduces the damage.
- Watch the audience and Star Power. The audience can throw helpful items or objects that hinder you. Successful timing contributes to the Star Power meter, which enables special moves when charged.
- Adjust on the next turn. If an attack does not work, change the partner, target a revealed weakness, use an item or choose a different move rather than repeating the same command.
Why Action Commands matter
Action Commands are timing-based button inputs shown during an attack or defense. They are the main way the game rewards attention during an otherwise menu-driven fight. Better timing improves the result of your attack, while defensive timing limits incoming damage. If a command is difficult, badges can make Action Command timing easier, giving you a way to tune the challenge instead of relying only on reflexes.
Manage the audience
The audience is an active battle element. Helpful objects can improve your position, while thrown objects can interrupt or hinder you. Keep watching the arena after selecting a command; the battle is not finished just because you chose an action. The same timing discipline that improves attacks also helps you respond to incoming threats.
Build Star Power through good execution
Successful Action Commands help fill the Star Power meter. Once enough Star Power is available, special moves become an option. This creates a useful rhythm: learn the enemy with Tattle, land reliable commands, preserve resources when ordinary attacks are sufficient and spend special moves when they solve a difficult group or urgent threat.
Badges and level-ups: make the build fit you
Badges let you customize Mario’s moves and statistics. Depending on the badge, they can add moves, improve strength or make Action Command timing easier. Badge Points limit how many you can equip, so equipping every badge is not automatically better. Build around the problems you encounter: extra move options for tactical variety, strength improvements for damage, or timing assistance if commands are your main obstacle.

| Level-up choice | What it increases | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Heart Points | Mario’s health. | You are frequently being knocked close to defeat or need a larger margin for mistakes while learning enemy patterns. |
| Flower Points | The resource used for powerful moves, allowing them more often. | You rely on special or high-impact moves and regularly run out of the resource before a battle ends. |
| Badge Points | Capacity for equipping badges. | You have useful badges waiting to be equipped or want to specialize Mario’s moves and timing support. |
Nintendo’s beginner guidance presents these as the three level-up options; it does not identify a universally best order. Reconsider the next choice after you understand whether your current difficulty comes from survivability, move frequency or limited customization.

A path or object appears impossible
- Look for a paper transformation that matches the geometry: a gap suggests the plane, a narrow opening suggests the sideways form, and water can indicate the boat.
- Open the Partner Ring with L and test another available partner’s field ability.
- Ask for a hint with ZL. If Goombella is present, press X for local information.
- Leave the area and advance the story. Return after gaining a new ability or meeting another character.
An enemy is taking too little damage
- Use Goombella’s Tattle to reveal current statistics and weaknesses.
- Select a partner whose combat role fits the revealed weakness.
- Change the attack type or use an item rather than repeating an ineffective move.
- Practice the Action Command; timing can improve the attack result.
You are taking too much damage
- Watch for the defensive timing cue whenever an enemy attacks.
- Use Y to change the active position of Mario and the partner during battle.
- Consider Heart Points at the next level-up if a larger health buffer would solve the problem.
- Equip badges that make Action Commands easier if timing, rather than strategy, is the limiting factor.
You cannot find the next objective
Talk to people again, inspect nearby scenery and use Goombella’s local information when available. The game expects some revisiting, so an apparently inactive route may simply be waiting for a story event, transformation or partner. Avoid assuming that every locked-looking feature must be solved immediately.

Install the documented software update
Nintendo Support lists a software update available July 9, 2024. The notice addresses occasional control-response problems after hammering an enemy in the field and a rare situation in which a battle did not end properly. Nintendo also notes that the console’s update screen is the place to check for later version information.

A practical decision framework for new players
When you are unsure what to do next, ask three questions in order:
- Is this an exploration problem? Inspect the scene for a paper transformation, switch partners with the Partner Ring or move on and return later.
- Is this a battle-information problem? Tattle the enemy with Goombella, identify its weakness and select the partner or move that exploits it.
- Is this a resource or execution problem? Practice the Action Command, use badges that support timing, and select Heart, Flower or Badge Points at the next level-up according to the resource you are actually missing.
This framework keeps the game’s systems connected. Exploration tells you which partner or transformation to use; Tattle turns battle uncertainty into information; Action Commands reward execution; and badges and level-ups let you correct a build that no longer suits your play style.

- Install the July 9, 2024 update, then check the console for any newer version.
Bottom line
Play Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as a loop of observe, choose and time: observe the environment or enemy, choose the transformation, partner, badge or resource that fits, then time the Action Command. The Switch edition’s Partner Ring, quick-travel pipes, updated presentation and hint tools make that loop easier to manage, while revisiting areas remains a normal part of solving the paper world.
