Each successful entry scores one point. Teams switch sides at four points or when the half timer expires, and the first team to reach eight points wins. The official guide classifies Overload as a Core Multiplayer mode for teams of up to six, but check the in-game playlist menu to see whether it is currently available.
What is the Overload Device and how do you score?
Each team is assigned one half of the map. The Overload Device appears near the center, at one of three possible locations across the middle. Only one player can carry it at a time. Your team scores by taking it into either of the two detonation zones on the opposing half; each entry is worth one point.

If the carrier is eliminated, the device drops where it was last held, giving either team a chance to recover it. After a score or an out-of-bounds loss, it resets to a central spawn. Keep track of where it is and when it will be available again: the reset can become the next contest for control of mid-map.

How do rounds, sides and Sudden Death work?
Teams switch sides when one team reaches four points, or when the half timer runs out. The match ends when a team reaches eight points. If the final timer expires with the score tied, the match goes to a two-minute Sudden Death period. There are no respawns during Sudden Death, and the first team to score wins.

How should you divide team roles?
Overload rewards coordinated objective play, not simply chasing eliminations. The official mode guide suggests assigning players to defend your half, attack the enemy half, or move between the two as needed. Adapt those responsibilities to where the device is and which team has possession.
- Carrier escort: Stay close enough to protect the carrier and help them reach a zone. A carrier who is isolated is easier to eliminate.
- Attack: Help secure a route into the enemy half and support the push toward a detonation zone.
- Defense: Protect your half and watch likely routes toward your zones.
- Flexible support: Contest mid-map, reinforce whichever side is under pressure, or prepare for the next device reset.
The guide’s central advice is to make your movement serve the device. A player pursuing fights far from it may leave the carrier or a likely approach exposed. These are recommendations from the official guide, not independently tested strategies.

How can you support your carrier or stop the enemy carrier?
When your team has the device
Move with the carrier and help clear or hold the route to a scoring zone. The carrier is exposed, so avoid leaving them to make the run alone. Use alternate routes when a direct path is covered, and consider whether the team needs to pressure a choke point before the carrier arrives.

The official guide names Combat Hologram, Active Camo, Trophy System and Assault Pack as examples to consider in role-specific loadouts. It also recommends placing equipment such as a Trophy System or Assault Pack behind a choke point when that helps support your position. Choose equipment for the job you are filling rather than assuming one setup suits every push.

When the other team has the device
Rather than following the opposing carrier from behind, predict the route they are likely to take and try to reach a choke point ahead of them. This can let your team contest the approach before the device reaches a zone. Watch alternate routes, too: guarding only the most direct path can leave another way through open.
When the device resets
After a score or an out-of-bounds loss, the device returns to a central spawn. The guide recommends securing the reset location before the device becomes available again. Keep enough players ready to contest mid-map while still accounting for threats on your half.

Is Overload available in the current playlist?
The official mode guide lists Overload as a Core Multiplayer mode, but that does not confirm it is selectable in every current playlist rotation. Activision’s September 8, 2026 Season 06 announcement describes current multiplayer content without confirming Overload’s availability. Check the in-game playlist menu rather than assuming it is currently active.
You need access to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and its multiplayer component. Activision lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Battle.net and Steam, and its game page references Game Pass subscriptions. Store availability and any subscription requirements can vary by platform and region, so confirm them with the relevant store.

Why is Overload built around coordinated play?
In an Xbox Wire interview published October 14, 2025, Treyarch Design Director Matt Scronce described Overload as an effort to create a new competitive mode and said its concept drew on earlier modes including Capture the Flag, Uplink, Search and Destroy, and Sabotage. The interview presents Overload as a mode designed for competitive 6v6 play that could scale to 4v4 for the Call of Duty League. That context fits the practical lesson of the rules: the carrier’s route, protection and interception matter more than wandering away from the objective.
