A generic PC Blu-ray reader is not enough. If your drive is not on that list, dump the disc to game files first using a supported drive or an appropriate PS3-console workflow, then load those files in RPCS3.
Either route still requires RPCS3, official PS3 firmware, and a compatibility check for the exact disc game ID and region. Direct-disc support is selective, and the compatibility of the drive is a separate question from whether the game itself runs well.

What you need before starting
Prepare these items before deciding between direct play and dumping:
- A Windows, Linux or macOS computer capable of running the current RPCS3 build. The available material does not establish a single current CPU, GPU, RAM or operating-system requirement, so use the requirements shown on RPCS3’s official download and support pages for your platform.
- The current RPCS3 installation from its official download source.
- Official PlayStation 3 system software downloaded from PlayStation.com. RPCS3 needs this firmware even when you plan to use a physical disc.
- Your original PS3 game disc.
- Either a Blu-ray drive that RPCS3 currently supports for PS3 media, or a supported PS3-console dumping method.
- Enough local storage for the game data if you choose the dump-first route. The amount varies by title; no universal capacity figure should be assumed.
Do not buy a drive solely because its packaging says “Blu-ray.” RPCS3’s Quickstart material warns that not every Blu-ray drive recognizes PS3 game discs, and the September 2026 report on direct playback describes support as limited to particular drives.

Direct disc or dumped files?
There are two practical workflows. Direct play avoids creating a local copy first, but it depends on the drive being on RPCS3’s current supported list and on the exact procedure documented there. Dumping takes preparation and storage, yet it remains the dependable fallback when a drive cannot use the direct path.
| Question | Direct-disc workflow | Dump-first workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | A supported internal or external Blu-ray drive; support is selective. | A compatible Blu-ray drive or an appropriate PS3-console dumping method. |
| Preparation | Install RPCS3 and firmware, verify the drive, insert the disc, then follow the current RPCS3 disc instructions. | Create a self-dump, organize the resulting files, add them to RPCS3, and launch the game. |
| Storage | Uses the disc as the game source while playing; the exact current storage behavior depends on RPCS3’s documented implementation. | Requires local storage for the dumped game data; the size is title-specific. |
| Main failure point | The drive may not recognize or expose PS3 media even though it reads ordinary Blu-ray movies. | The drive or console method may not be supported, or the dump may be incomplete or placed incorrectly. |
| Game compatibility | The disc or files must still match a game entry that RPCS3 supports. Drive compatibility does not guarantee playable emulation. | |
A September 7, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report is the basis for the recent direct-disc news. It indicates that RPCS3 can read some PS3 games from physical drives, not that every Blu-ray drive or every computer can do so. The report does not establish the authoritative model list; check RPCS3’s live drive guidance immediately before relying on this method.
Install RPCS3 and the official PS3 firmware
- Download RPCS3 from the official source. Use the current package for your operating system rather than an old installer or an unofficial repack. Version-specific requirements and installation screens can change.
- Download the PS3 system-software update from PlayStation.com. Keep the downloaded firmware file in an easy-to-find location. Use the official package, not a firmware file from a random download site.
- Open RPCS3 and install the firmware. In the emulator, select
File > Install Firmware, choose the official update file, and wait for the installation to finish. - Restart RPCS3 if requested. Confirm that the emulator no longer prompts for system software before attempting to load a disc or game folder.
The firmware route and menu label above come from the surfaced RPCS3 Quickstart wording hosted on a third-party mirror. Because menu names and official instructions can change, use the live RPCS3 documentation as the final authority if your build presents different labels.

How to try direct playback from a PS3 disc
1. Verify the drive before inserting the game
Find RPCS3’s current supported-drive guidance and check the exact model, not merely the manufacturer or the fact that it is an optical Blu-ray drive. The available September 2026 material does not verify a model list, required drive firmware, USB-versus-internal differences, or operating-system-specific conditions, so no particular drive can be declared compatible here.

2. Connect the drive and start RPCS3
Attach the internal or external drive as described by the current RPCS3 instructions. If the guide specifies a particular connection mode, driver, or operating-system step, follow that live instruction rather than assuming that a normal optical-drive setup is sufficient.
3. Insert the original disc
Insert the PS3 game only after the drive has been checked. Follow RPCS3’s current direct-disc procedure to identify the inserted media and add it as a game source. The exact controls for this newly reported feature are version-sensitive and are not established by the available documentation.
4. Stop if the disc is not recognized
A failure to detect the disc is usually a drive-support problem, not proof that the game is incompatible with RPCS3. Recheck the exact model against the live list, confirm that the drive can read the disc at all, and then use the dump-first route if the model is unsupported or absent from the list. Do not repeatedly change files or firmware based on a generic Blu-ray troubleshooting guide.
5. Check the game’s exact compatibility entry
Once RPCS3 identifies the game, note its game ID and media type. The compatibility wiki separates entries by game ID and groups them by media; disc and digital editions of the same title can have different entries. Open the entry corresponding to your disc’s region and release, then read its current notes before judging performance.

How to dump a PS3 disc and load it in RPCS3
Dumping creates a local copy of the game data from a disc you own. The Quickstart material says PS3 game files must be self-dumped and that only compatible drives can perform the job. It also describes a PS3-console workflow as an alternative. Use the current official dumping guide for the exact commands, drive conditions and console steps; those details are not safely inferable from a generic Blu-ray tutorial.
Choose a supported dumping method
- Compatible Blu-ray drive: Verify the exact drive in RPCS3’s current guidance before purchasing or configuring it. A drive that reads movie discs or PC data discs may still fail to recognize PS3 game media.
- PS3-console workflow: If you have access to an appropriate PS3-console method documented by RPCS3, follow that guide and then transfer the resulting files to the computer. The available material does not establish a universal console model, software version or transfer command, so do not substitute an unverified procedure.
Create the self-dump
Use the selected supported method to read the entire game disc and produce the folder layout expected by RPCS3. Keep the dump intact while it is being created; an interrupted or partial read can look like a valid folder but fail when launched. Store the dump somewhere with enough free space and avoid renaming internal folders until RPCS3 has recognized it.
Confirm the expected folder structure
The surfaced Quickstart example describes disc game data as a folder containing PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb. It says PS3_UPDATE is not required for that listed layout. This is a useful outline rather than a substitute for the live official guide: verify the current file-handling rules for your RPCS3 version before deleting, moving or omitting anything.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Add the game data to RPCS3
- Open RPCS3 after firmware installation.
- Use the current game-install or game-directory option shown by your build, and select the folder that contains
PS3_GAMEandPS3_DISC.sfb, rather than selecting an arbitrary parent folder. - Allow RPCS3 to scan the data and create the game entry.
- Right-click or open the game’s information panel to confirm the detected game ID, region and media type.
- Launch the title and consult the corresponding compatibility entry if it fails, hangs or displays rendering problems.
If the game does not appear, check that the folder was not nested one level too deep, that the dump completed, and that the required files were not renamed. If RPCS3 reports missing data, repeat the dump with the supported method instead of downloading a replacement copy.

Why the drive requirement is separate from game compatibility
Two independent checks are involved:
- Can the hardware read the PS3 disc? This is determined by RPCS3’s supported-drive guidance and the conditions for the direct or dumping workflow.
- Can RPCS3 emulate this game build? This is determined by the game’s compatibility entry, game ID, region, media and current notes.
A drive can pass the first test while the game is listed as Ingame or Intro. Conversely, a highly compatible game is irrelevant if the drive cannot read the disc. Treat “disc detected” and “game playable” as separate milestones.
Reading RPCS3 compatibility labels correctly
RPCS3 tracks compatibility by game ID and media rather than by a broad title name. A single title can have separate disc and digital entries, and regional releases can use different IDs. Search by the ID shown for your disc and read the notes for that exact entry.
| Label | Meaning for your decision |
|---|---|
| Playable | The project reports the entry as playable, but your hardware, settings, region and build can still affect results. |
| Ingame | The game runs to some extent but has known issues or does not meet the project’s playable standard. |
| Intro | It reaches an introductory screen or similarly limited point, not a complete playable experience. |
| Loadable | It loads, but the project does not report meaningful in-game progress. |
| Nothing | No working behavior is reported for that entry at the time of the listing. |
The RPCS3 project’s September 2026 compatibility-list snapshot contained 2,809 Playable, 721 Ingame, 31 Intro, 2 Loadable and 0 Nothing entries. These are dated compatibility-list entries, not a benchmark, a count of every retail disc, or a guarantee for your computer. The specific entry and its notes matter more than the aggregate totals.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The disc is invisible to RPCS3 | Confirm the exact drive model is listed for the current direct-disc feature and that the disc is seated correctly. | Try the documented connection or driver steps. If the model is unsupported or absent, switch to a supported dumping method. |
| The drive reads movies but not the PS3 game | Movie-Blu-ray capability does not establish PS3-game compatibility. | Use RPCS3’s drive list; do not infer support from the optical format alone. |
| A dumped game does not appear | Check for the expected PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.sfb, and make sure the selected path is the game’s root folder. |
Re-scan or re-add the correct directory. If files are missing, redo the self-dump. |
| The game appears but will not boot | Verify the dump is complete, firmware is installed, and the game ID and region match the compatibility entry. | Read that entry’s notes and follow any version-specific instructions in the current RPCS3 documentation. |
| The game boots but is unstable | Check whether the exact disc entry is Playable, Ingame, Intro or Loadable. | Use the entry’s current notes and avoid treating another region, media type or digital build as equivalent. |
Storage, backups and file organization
The direct route may be attractive when you want to avoid preparing a local copy, but its availability depends on supported hardware and the current implementation. A dump-first setup needs local disk space and a clear folder structure. Keep each game in its own directory, preserve the files generated by the supported dumper, and maintain a backup if the disc is difficult to replace. Do not assume that a generic “game” folder or a compressed archive will be recognized; use the layout documented for your RPCS3 build.

When transferring a console-created dump, copy the complete directory tree before adding it to RPCS3. If the transfer is interrupted, remove the incomplete copy and transfer it again rather than troubleshooting an evidently partial dataset.
Legal and practical boundaries
Use a disc you own and create your own dump. The Quickstart guidance specifically describes self-dumped game files. Copyright and circumvention rules differ by country, so check the law where you live; nothing in the emulator setup authorizes downloading someone else’s game dump or firmware.
Which workflow should you choose?
Choose direct playback when
- Your exact internal or external Blu-ray drive is confirmed by RPCS3’s current supported-drive guidance.
- You want to avoid preparing a local game copy and are comfortable following version-specific instructions.
- You have checked the exact disc game ID and its compatibility notes.
Choose dumping when
- Your drive is not listed for direct playback.
- You can use a supported Blu-ray or PS3-console dumping method.
- You want a local copy that can be organized and backed up, and you have sufficient storage.
The safest decision rule is simple: verify the drive first, then verify the game ID. If either check fails, do not infer support from the disc format or the title name; use the alternative workflow or consult the current RPCS3 documentation for that specific case.
