If you want to follow the Zelda timeline, play The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons first, then Oracle of Ages. For a casual playthrough, either game can come first: each tells a self-contained story. To connect the two adventures, finish the first game and use its password in the other.
Which Oracle game should you play first?
The timeline-based order is Oracle of Seasons → Oracle of Ages. Nintendo Life reports that Hyrule Historia places Seasons before Ages; that chronology is a recommendation for timeline-minded players, not a requirement for understanding the games. Nintendo describes each as a self-contained adventure, and its official pages do not prescribe a required order.

If chronology is not a concern, choose by the kind of challenge you prefer. Nintendo Life characterizes Seasons as more combat-focused and Ages as more puzzle-focused. That is a broad, subjective distinction—not a claim that one game is objectively harder or easier.
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The timeline sequence | Oracle of Seasons | Nintendo Life says Hyrule Historia places it before Oracle of Ages. |
| A more combat-oriented adventure | Oracle of Seasons | Nintendo Life describes its emphasis as more combat-focused. |
| A more puzzle-oriented adventure | Oracle of Ages | Nintendo Life describes its emphasis as more puzzle-focused. |
| Just to play both stories | Either | Nintendo describes the games as self-contained, so the order is not needed to follow either plot. |
What is different about the two games?
Oracle of Seasons: change the seasons
Link travels to Holodrum to rescue Din from Onox. The Rod of Seasons changes the environment by shifting seasons: Nintendo’s examples include making a flower grow in spring so it can lift Link, or freezing a lake in winter so he can cross it. The season-changing mechanic is the game’s defining tool, alongside its more combat-oriented reputation.

Oracle of Ages: travel through time
In Labrynna, Link sets out to rescue Nayru from Veran. The Harp of Ages lets him move between past and present. Changes in one era can affect the other—for example, moving an obstacle in the past can alter a river in the present, while planting seeds earlier can lead to trees and vines growing later.
How to connect the games with a password
After you beat one game, it gives you a password to use in the other. Entering that password lets the adventures interact: it can unlock certain items, cause characters to remember earlier actions, and expand story elements. Nintendo recommends playing both with this link for a more connected experience.

- Choose either game and complete its story.
- Note the completion password it gives you.
- Start the other game and use that password when prompted for linked play.
You do not have to play one game first to unlock the other, and linked play does not make a particular starting choice mandatory. If you plan to finish both and want the timeline sequence, use Seasons first and carry its password into Ages.

Nintendo listed both titles in the Game Boy collection for Nintendo Switch Online. Its July 26, 2023 announcement says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required and notes that availability varies by country. Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 catalog article also lists both as 2001 Game Boy Color games. Check your local Nintendo Switch Online catalog for current access, since regional availability and service terms can change.

- The land of Holodrum is slowly withering. Onox, the General of Darkness, has imprisoned the Oracle of Seasons and is draining the very life out of the land. With the seasons in tumult and the forces of evil running rampant, the world looks for a hero... and finds Link. His quest won't be easy - he'll have to master the seasons themselves if he's to turn back the evil tide.
The original Game Boy Color cartridges are another route if you want to play on original hardware or collect the games. Their availability, condition, authenticity, and seller quality depend on the individual listing and have not been established here.
