Both let you roll a katamari through stages and collect objects, but the dedicated Switch 2 version adds mouse controls, smoother frame-rate performance and enhanced graphics. You can play alone, compete against CPU opponents, or enter online KatamariBall matches with a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
What you do in Once Upon A KATAMARI
The central task is simple: roll the katamari into objects that it can collect. Each object sticks to the ball, making it larger and allowing it to pick up progressively bigger objects. You guide the Prince through a stage, grow the katamari and work toward that stage’s stated objective.

The story setup
The King causes a cosmic mishap, leaving the Prince responsible for restoring the stars. The stages use varied settings rather than one continuous world. Official descriptions include the Jurassic Period, the Ice Age and historic Japan, so the objects and visual themes change as you advance.
The basic play loop
- Read the stage goal. Identify what the stage asks you to accomplish before you start rolling.
- Collect objects at your current size. Smaller objects are the useful targets at the beginning; objects that are too large will not attach yet.
- Keep moving through dense areas. Every successful pickup increases the katamari, opening access to larger objects.
- Use power-ups when available. Bandai Namco identifies a magnet power-up that pulls nearby objects toward the katamari, reducing the need to make direct contact with every item.
- Finish the stated objective. The official pages establish the collection loop but do not publish a universal scoring formula or a detailed walkthrough for every stage, so follow the goal shown in the game rather than relying on an assumed time or score rule.
That loop is the same whether you choose traditional controls or the Switch 2 mouse option. The practical difference is how you steer and the presentation features supplied by the edition you own.

Switch edition or dedicated Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo lists the original Switch edition as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Separately, Nintendo and Bandai Namco list a Switch 2 release. Compatibility means the Switch edition can run on the newer console with behavior consistent with the Nintendo Switch version; it is not the same thing as owning the enhanced Switch 2 edition.
| Choice | What it is | Controls and presentation | Save-transfer relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch edition | The existing Switch game running on Switch 2 through compatibility support. | Uses the Switch edition’s behavior. It does not become the separate enhanced release merely because it is launched on Switch 2. | Existing Switch players can move this game’s save to a Switch 2 system under the condition described below. |
| Dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition | A separately listed release launched on October 8, 2026. | Adds exclusive mouse controls, a smoother frame rate and enhanced graphics compared with the Nintendo Switch version. | Check the transfer process before creating a new save on the destination console. |
If your priority is the enhanced presentation or mouse input, select the Switch 2 listing. If you already own the Switch edition, you can still play it on Switch 2; do not assume that compatibility automatically upgrades its graphics or features.
How to start playing on Switch 2
- Open your local Nintendo eShop listing. Confirm whether the product is labeled for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or both. Store labels and edition contents can differ by region.
- Choose the edition you intend to use. Existing Switch owners should identify whether they are launching their current Switch software or purchasing the separate Switch 2 release.
- Check available storage. Nintendo’s UK listing gives the Switch 2 release a 4.2 GB download size, while the US listing displays 5.1 GB for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the compatibility information. These are storefront-specific figures, so verify the size shown in your own eShop before downloading.
- Install and launch the game. On first launch, open the in-game controls or help screen. That screen is the authoritative place to see the button layout for your edition and controller.
- Select a starting activity. Begin with a standard stage to learn how object size affects collection, or choose KatamariBall if you want competition. Offline CPU play does not require an online subscription.
Controls: traditional input versus the Switch 2 mouse option
What the Switch 2 release adds
Bandai Namco describes mouse controls as exclusive to the Switch 2 version. The publisher also describes a smoother frame rate and enhanced graphics compared with the Nintendo Switch version. Those are edition-level features; they should not be attributed to the compatible Switch edition simply because it is running on the newer hardware.

Finding the exact layout
The official material does not provide a complete button map or explain the mouse gestures. Do not rely on a generic control diagram from another game. Use the controls or help screen inside your installed edition to confirm which stick, buttons or mouse actions steer the katamari, change views, activate a power-up and pause the game.
- Launch the game and open its Settings, Options or Help area.
- Select the controls section and check the currently connected controller or mouse input.
- Review the displayed actions before entering a timed or competitive stage.
- If the mouse option is not available, confirm that you purchased the dedicated Switch 2 edition rather than launching the compatible Switch software.
The mouse feature is an input choice, not a separate game mode. You can continue using a conventional controller if that is more comfortable; the exact supported layouts are shown by the game itself.

Prince, cousins and customization
You can play as the Prince or choose from 68 cousins. Character customization includes changing colors and faces, allowing you to keep the same basic gameplay while giving your roller a different appearance.
A practical way to choose
- Use the Prince if you want the default story identity while learning the stages.
- Pick a cousin when you prefer a different silhouette or want to distinguish players in local or online competition.
- Change colors and faces for visual preference; the available information does not indicate that these cosmetic choices alter collection size, speed or scoring.
KatamariBall: solo, local and online play
KatamariBall is the competitive mode. Bandai Namco describes online competition and offline matches against CPU opponents. Nintendo’s listings show one-to-four-player online play and single-system play for one player, while the offline CPU option lets you compete without connecting to other players.
| KatamariBall option | Players | Connection or subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Offline match against CPU opponents | You play against computer-controlled rivals. | No Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for the described offline option. |
| Online competition | One to four players, according to Nintendo’s listing. | Requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. |
| Single-system play | Nintendo lists single-system play for one player. | Use the local system without an online membership. |
For a first session, offline CPU play is the low-friction way to learn the rolling and growth cycle. Choose online KatamariBall only after confirming that your account has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership and that your network connection is working.
Moving a Switch save to Nintendo Switch 2
Bandai Namco says existing Nintendo Switch players can transfer their save data to Switch 2 only if no save data for the game already exists on the destination system. Its October 8, 2026 release states: “Existing Nintendo Switch players who upgrade their game to Nintendo Switch 2 can transfer their save data, provided no save data already exists on the system.”
Safe order of operations
- Do not start a new game on the destination Switch 2 system. Creating save data there can prevent the transfer condition from being met.
- Confirm which edition you are upgrading or launching. Keep the original Switch software and the dedicated Switch 2 release distinct when following Nintendo’s system transfer prompts.
- Use Nintendo’s system-level save-data transfer process. Follow the prompts shown on your consoles; menu wording can change with system software updates.
- Verify the transferred save before deleting anything. Launch the game on Switch 2 and check that your expected progress appears.
If the destination already contains save data for this game, the quoted eligibility condition is not satisfied. Do not erase a destination save merely to force a transfer unless you have independently backed up anything you need and understand Nintendo’s current recovery options.

Paid DLC and bundled editions
Rolling LIVE Highlights
Rolling LIVE Highlights is paid DLC available from October 8, 2026. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe lists 10 new missions, 6 cousins, 12 songs and 18 accessories. It is sold separately and is also included in a Rolling LIVE Highlights Edition.
Royal Sound Edition
The official game page also lists a Royal Sound Edition that combines the base game with several music DLC packs. The named packs include Rolling LIVE Highlights, Dance Dance Remixes, Neo Remixes, and Songs Side A and Side B.
| Purchase route | What it provides | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | The core rolling stages and standard character and mode selection. | Players who want to learn the main game before buying additions. |
| Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC | Additional missions, cousins, songs and accessories as listed by Bandai Namco Europe. | Owners of the base game who want the specific extra content. |
| Rolling LIVE Highlights Edition | Base game plus Rolling LIVE Highlights. | New buyers who already know they want that expansion. |
| Royal Sound Edition | Base game with the listed music DLC packs, including Rolling LIVE Highlights and the other named sound packs. | Players prioritizing the broader music bundle. |
Prices, availability and exact contents can vary by regional storefront. Read the current Nintendo eShop description for your country before paying, especially when two editions appear with similar names.
Download size, storage and regional listings
The published download figures are not identical across Nintendo storefronts. Nintendo UK lists 4.2 GB for the Switch 2 release, while the US listing shows 5.1 GB for Nintendo Switch 2 in its compatibility and product information. The difference may reflect storefront presentation or regional listing data; it is not evidence that one region receives a different game.
- Leave more free space than the displayed download size so the console can complete installation and updates.
- Check the eShop page for your account’s region immediately before downloading.
- Allow additional space if you intend to install paid DLC or music packs later.
Beginner techniques that follow from the game loop
Read the objective before rolling
The stage goal tells you what success requires. Start by identifying whether the task emphasizes growth, a target object or another condition shown on screen. The official descriptions do not establish one universal scoring or timing system, so avoid assuming that every stage rewards the same route.

Grow in manageable steps
At a small size, concentrate on objects the katamari can already collect. As it grows, look for denser groups of larger objects rather than repeatedly circling isolated items. This uses the game’s stated size progression without requiring a stage-specific exploit.
Use the magnet deliberately
When the magnet power-up is available, activate it in an area containing nearby collectible objects. Its purpose is to draw objects toward the katamari, so it is most useful when several potential pickups are close but not directly in your path.
Practice before competing
Run a standard stage or an offline CPU match first. This lets you learn your chosen controller or mouse arrangement before an online KatamariBall match, where connection requirements and other players add pressure.

You cannot find mouse controls
Check the product title on the software icon and eShop receipt. Mouse controls are described for the dedicated Switch 2 release, not as a feature automatically added to the compatible Switch edition. Then open the in-game controls screen and confirm that the mouse is connected and recognized.

Your Switch game runs, but the graphics look unchanged
Nintendo’s compatibility listing means the original Switch edition can run on Switch 2 with Switch-version behavior. The smoother frame rate and enhanced graphics are described for the separate Switch 2 release, so verify which software you installed.

The save transfer will not start
Check whether the destination Switch 2 already has save data for this game. Bandai Namco’s transfer statement makes an empty destination save state a condition of eligibility. If you have already created progress there, stop before deleting anything and review Nintendo’s current save-management guidance.
Online KatamariBall is unavailable
Confirm that you are using the online mode rather than the offline CPU option, that your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active, and that the console is connected to the internet. A membership is required for online play but not for the described CPU matches.
The download does not fit
Compare your free storage with the size shown in your regional eShop. The published listings show 4.2 GB in the UK and 5.1 GB in the US for the Switch 2 information, so use the local figure rather than relying on a listing from another country.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your priority | Recommended route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Use a game you already own | Run the original Switch edition through Switch 2 compatibility. | Expect Switch-version behavior, and protect the destination system from new save data if you plan to transfer progress. |
| Get the enhanced presentation | Buy or upgrade to the dedicated Switch 2 edition. | Confirm the listing includes Switch 2, mouse controls and the enhanced graphics and frame-rate description. |
| Play competitively without a subscription | Use KatamariBall against CPU opponents. | Select the offline option. |
| Play with other people online | Use online KatamariBall. | Have Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet access and a compatible regional account setup. |
| Add missions and music | Choose Rolling LIVE Highlights or a listed sound bundle. | Compare the current regional edition contents and price before checkout. |
Once the edition, controls and save situation are clear, playing is straightforward: roll through the stage, collect objects you can currently absorb, grow the katamari, use the magnet when it helps, and pursue the objective shown by the game.
