How to Play Older Looter Shooters on Modern PCs (Windows 11 and Steam Deck Guide)

Yes—many older looter shooters run on a modern Windows PC, but there is no universal “old game” fix. Check the exact game’s current store build, operating-system requirements, CPU instruction support, launcher and anti-cheat policy, and (for Steam Deck) Valve’s compatibility rating before you install. Borderlands 2, Destiny 2 and The Division 2 show why the answer differs from one title to another.

Start with the exact game and current build

A requirement list describes a particular release and distribution path, not every copy ever sold. Before changing Windows settings or buying hardware, open the game’s current Steam, Epic or publisher support page and record the listed operating system, processor features, graphics card, memory, DirectX version, storage and launcher requirements. A legacy minimum can be especially misleading: the official Borderlands 2 page still lists Windows XP/Vista/7-era software, while the Steam client itself supports Windows 10 and later. That makes the old list useful historical context, but not proof that every contemporary launcher configuration will be effortless.

What the three documented examples show

Game Windows evidence Steam Deck or Proton policy Important qualification
Borderlands 2 The official page lists Windows XP SP3, Vista or Windows 7, 2 GB RAM, older GeForce/Radeon graphics, DirectX 9.0c and a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and bundled software prerequisites. Steam currently labels it Playable. The PC requirements were published April 14, 2025 and updated July 31, 2025, but the specifications describe the legacy release context. Playable may require manual adjustments.
Destiny 2 Windows 10 64-bit; 6 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. Bungie lists an Intel Core i3-3250 or Pentium G4560 / AMD FX-4350 minimum CPU and GTX 660 or GTX 1050 / Radeon HD 7850 minimum GPU examples. Unsupported on Steam Deck or Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Bungie warns that bypass attempts can result in a ban. Support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 ended June 4, 2024. Bungie does not officially support laptop configurations, even when minimum specifications are met.
The Division 2 Current Steam requirements support Windows 10 and Windows 11. Minimums include an AMD FX 6350 or Intel Core i5-2500K or better, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11, 77 GB storage, and CPU support for SSE 4.2 and AVX. Recommended settings use DirectX 12 with a higher CPU/GPU class. Check the current Steam Deck label and Proton behavior for your installed build; no universal Deck result is established by the requirements alone. Its original PC feature information is historical. Current Windows 10/11 claims should come from the current Steam support page.

Use these as examples, not as a genre-wide specification. Another looter shooter may require a different operating system, launcher, anti-cheat service or processor feature.

Can a modern Windows PC run an older looter shooter?

Usually, the graphics hardware is not the first question. Confirm all of the following for the exact title:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 or 11 may be required even when an old page names Windows 7 or earlier. Do not infer current launcher support from a legacy game manual.
  • CPU instructions: The Division 2 specifically names SSE 4.2 and AVX. A processor can be fast enough in general and still fail if it lacks a required instruction set.
  • Memory: Compare both minimum and recommended RAM. Destiny 2 lists 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended; The Division 2 lists 8 GB for both its minimum and recommended lines.
  • GPU and DirectX: Match the game’s listed graphics class and API. Borderlands 2’s historical list names DirectX 9.0c, while The Division 2’s current minimum names DirectX 11 and its recommended configuration names DirectX 12.
  • Storage: Leave room for the installation, patches and any launcher files. The Division 2 lists 77 GB.
  • Launcher and network: Some older games need a one-time online authentication; live-service games can require a continuing account, launcher and anti-cheat connection.
  • Form factor: Bungie says it does not officially support laptop configurations for Destiny 2, even where the published minimum is met. Treat a laptop GPU as a separate compatibility question rather than assuming it behaves like the desktop name.

Use the official requirements pages correctly

Borderlands 2: a legacy list that needs context

Read the official Borderlands 2 PC requirements as a description of the game’s original PC environment: Windows XP SP3, Vista or Windows 7; 2 GB of memory; older GeForce or Radeon examples; DirectX 9.0c; and a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and included software prerequisites. The page’s recent publication and update dates do not turn those historical minimums into a guarantee of current launcher behavior.

For a Steam copy, also consult Steam Support’s Borderlands 2 entry. If the game is offered through another storefront or a bundled collection, check that edition’s support page separately.

Destiny 2: modern operating-system and memory requirements

Bungie’s Destiny 2 PC System Requirements list Windows 10 64-bit, a 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended memory target, and the CPU/GPU examples shown in the table above. The page records the end of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 support on June 4, 2024. It also notes that the Epic Games Store version supports Windows 10 64-bit and not older Windows versions.

Those numbers are requirements, not a frame-rate promise. They do not establish performance for every desktop, laptop, resolution or graphics preset.

The Division 2: instruction sets and storage matter

The current Steam support page for The Division 2 is the better source for present Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility than the game’s original launch material. Check its CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX, SSE 4.2, AVX and 77 GB storage requirements together. The original PC features and specifications article documents features such as uncapped frame rate and resolution, widescreen or multiscreen support, HUD customization, variable refresh rate and HDR, but its operating-system list is historical.

A reliable Windows installation sequence

  1. Identify the edition. Write down the storefront, edition, downloadable content and launcher used by your copy. Requirements and authentication can differ between a current store build and an old disc or repackaged release.
  2. Record your PC’s actual configuration. Note the Windows edition and 64-bit status, processor model and instruction support, installed RAM, GPU model, DirectX capability and free storage. Compare these with the game’s current official page rather than with a generic “gaming PC” checklist.
  3. Update Windows and the launcher. Install pending operating-system and storefront updates, then restart before diagnosing a launch failure. An outdated client can fail before the game itself starts.
  4. Install from an authorized current source. Let the storefront obtain the current executable and prerequisites. If the game requires a one-time authentication, allow that connection during the first launch.
  5. Launch once without custom tweaks. Use the default graphics and input settings first. This establishes whether the unmodified build starts and gives you a clean baseline for later changes.
  6. Change one setting at a time. If the game opens but performs poorly, lower graphics quality or resolution, restart, and observe the result before changing another variable. Do not treat a lower setting as proof that the hardware meets every other requirement.
  7. Use the game’s current support route for errors. Capture the exact error text, launcher name and Windows version. A missing instruction-set error, authentication failure and graphics crash require different remedies; a generic compatibility-mode change cannot solve all three.

Why an old game can fail on a new computer

The operating system is newer than the requirement page

A page that names Windows XP or Windows 7 may simply reflect the release date. It does not confirm that the present launcher, online services or bundled components still support that environment—or that a modern Windows installation will reproduce every old dependency. Prefer the current storefront support page, and distinguish a historical minimum from a current support statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The processor lacks a required feature

The Division 2’s SSE 4.2 and AVX entries are a concrete warning. Check the CPU feature requirement before replacing a graphics card. If the processor does not provide the required instruction set, a faster GPU will not correct that incompatibility.

The online service or anti-cheat policy blocks the launch

Live-service games can reject an otherwise capable machine because the launcher, account service or anti-cheat system does not support the operating system or compatibility layer. This is why Destiny 2’s Steam Deck policy must be read as a platform rule, not as a suggestion to experiment with Proton settings.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The current build has different middleware

Playing older looter shooters on Steam Deck

Steam Deck compatibility is a separate decision from Windows PC requirements. Valve reviews input, display, seamlessness and system support, including Proton and middleware. Its labels mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Label Valve’s practical meaning How to use it
Verified Works well out of the box. Start here, while still checking the game’s current notes after updates.
Playable The game may require some manual tweaking by the user. Expect possible input, display or settings adjustments rather than guaranteed plug-and-play behavior.
Unsupported Currently not functional on the reviewed configuration. Do not assume a Proton version or launch option will make it supported.
Unknown Valve has not checked it. Treat the result as unverified and investigate the exact build before buying for Deck use.

Valve explains the categories on its Steam Deck Verified page. The current Steam listing for Borderlands 2 shows Playable, so manual adjustment may be needed. That rating is a starting point, not a promise that every update, custom configuration or user modification behaves identically.

Deck procedure for a title that is allowed to run

  1. Update SteamOS and restart. Steam’s Deck troubleshooting guidance starts with system updates and a restart.
  2. Open the game’s store page. Read the current compatibility label and any notes instead of relying on a screenshot or an old forum post.
  3. Install and test the default configuration. Confirm that the game reaches its menu and accepts the Deck controls before adding custom settings.
  4. Select a Proton tool only when appropriate. In the game’s Steam interface, open Properties > Compatibility and select a Proton tool when Steam’s guidance or the game’s current notes call for it. A different Proton tool is not a universal fix.
  5. Lower graphics settings if required. Adjust in-game quality or resolution after confirming that the title launches. Change one setting at a time so you can reverse a change that introduces a new problem.
  6. Reassess after updates. SteamOS, Proton and the game can each change the result. Recheck the label and support notes before assuming a previous setup still applies.

Destiny 2 is a firm exception

Bungie’s official Destiny 2 Steam Guide states: “Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running.” Bungie says a SteamOS/Proton launch will not enter the game and warns that attempts to bypass the incompatibility may lead to a ban; its account restrictions and banning policy explains the enforcement risk. Do not recommend Proton workarounds for this title. A Deck with Windows installed is a different operating-system configuration and still needs to meet Bungie’s Windows requirements.

Controller support: useful, but verify the game first

Controller support is title-specific rather than a property of the looter-shooter genre. Steam Support explicitly lists an Xbox 360 wired gamepad and a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 wireless controller for Borderlands 2, and the current Steam listing describes full controller support. That is enough to treat a controller as an optional input choice for that game, but it does not verify any particular modern controller model.

Before purchasing a device, check the game’s current Steam input notes and the controller’s connection mode. Test wired and wireless operation separately if both are available. If keyboard and mouse work but a controller does not, isolate the input issue from graphics or launcher troubleshooting rather than changing several settings at once.

Windows PC or Steam Deck: choose by constraints

Decision factor Windows desktop or laptop Steam Deck
Operating-system support Compare the game’s current Windows requirement, not only its historical minimum. Destiny 2 requires Windows 10 64-bit; The Division 2’s current Steam page supports Windows 10 and 11. Use Valve’s current Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown label and read the notes.
CPU features Check named requirements such as SSE 4.2 and AVX for The Division 2. Proton adds another compatibility layer; a Windows requirement does not automatically translate to SteamOS.
Launcher and anti-cheat Confirm the current launcher and online-service policy. Check the publisher’s Deck/Proton policy. Destiny 2 is explicitly unsupported under SteamOS/Proton.
Input Keyboard and mouse are generally available; controller support remains game-specific. Deck controls may work out of the box, require adjustment, or need a different input layout depending on the title.
Manual configuration May be needed for legacy software or unusual launch failures. Playable titles can require manual tweaks; Valve’s troubleshooting path includes Properties > Compatibility and graphics changes.
Performance evidence Official requirements do not predict a universal frame rate for every resolution or preset. Compatibility labels indicate functional expectations, not a guaranteed frame-rate target.

A practical pre-purchase and troubleshooting checklist

  • Find the exact current store page for the edition you intend to play.
  • Confirm the supported Windows version or Deck label.
  • Compare CPU model and required instruction sets, not only advertised CPU speed.
  • Compare GPU class, DirectX version, RAM and available storage.
  • Check whether the game needs a launcher, account authentication or anti-cheat service.
  • For Steam Deck, read the publisher’s Proton policy independently of Valve’s label.
  • Install updates, restart, and test the unmodified default configuration first.
  • Change one graphics, Proton or input setting at a time.
  • Stop experimenting when a publisher warns that bypass attempts can cause account penalties.
  • Recheck requirements and compatibility after game, launcher or SteamOS updates.

When to stop troubleshooting and choose another setup

If the current operating system is unsupported, the CPU lacks a required instruction set, or the publisher explicitly blocks the platform, repeated graphics changes will not make the configuration compliant. Move to a supported Windows installation or a different device only after confirming the official policy. Conversely, if the title is merely labeled Playable and launches successfully after a small, reversible adjustment, there is no need to replace capable hardware solely because the game is old.

The safest habit is title-by-title verification: use official requirements for Windows, Valve’s live Deck status for SteamOS, and the publisher’s own launcher or anti-cheat policy for online games.
