The wording and location of that command differ between Safari, Chrome, Android versions, iOS versions and other browsers, so treat the labels below as guidance rather than a universal tap sequence.
Strands is a word-search puzzle on a 6-by-8 board containing 48 letters. You trace connected letters to find words related to the day’s theme, including one special word called the spangram. The app is optional: a home-screen icon can open the website without proving that a native Strands app has been installed.

Choose how you want to open Strands
There are two supported mobile routes. Use the browser when you want a direct webpage and the option of saving that page to your home screen. Use the NYT Games app when you prefer an app icon and app-based access. The New York Times Help Center lists the Games app for both iOS and Android.

You do not need a special phone, tablet, stylus or physical puzzle product. An existing internet-connected mobile device and its browser are enough for the webpage route.

Open the official puzzle on a phone
Browser method
- Open the browser you normally use on your phone or tablet.
- Navigate to the official New York Times Strands page. If you reach the general Games area first, select Strands from the available games.
- Wait for the board and its instructions to load. A slow connection, content blocker or signed-out session can make the page appear incomplete; reload once before changing settings.
- Keep the page open while you learn the board. After you have confirmed that the puzzle loads correctly, you can use the browser’s home-screen command described later.
NYT Games app method
- Open the app store on your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
- Search for the official NYT Games app and check that the publisher information identifies The New York Times before installing.
- Launch the app and open Strands from its Games list.
- Sign in if the app requests an account. If a subscription or account message appears, follow the access terms shown in the app rather than assuming that every puzzle is included.
The Help Center’s availability statement covers iOS and Android. It does not say that every feature or every puzzle is unrestricted for every account type.
Understand the Strands board before touching it
The 48-letter layout
Strands uses six rows of eight letters, for 48 positions in total. The letters are not arranged as separate answer boxes. Instead, you search the whole board for connected paths that form words associated with the displayed theme.
What counts as a neighboring letter
A path may move horizontally, vertically or diagonally from one letter to the next. It can change direction as it travels, so a correct answer is not necessarily a straight line. Each successive letter must touch the previous one under one of those three adjacency directions.
Theme words and the spangram
Most answers are theme words: words that fit the puzzle’s stated idea. The spangram is a special answer that names or expresses the theme. It crosses from one side of the board to the opposite side, although its route can bend through the intervening letters. Finding it can make the remaining theme words easier to recognize, but you still have to trace the complete path.

Trace a word on a touchscreen
- Read the theme shown with the puzzle and scan the 48-letter board for a plausible related word.
- Touch the first letter of your candidate and keep your finger on the glass.
- Drag to each neighboring letter in order. Move horizontally, vertically or diagonally; change direction when the intended path requires it.
- Lift your finger only after the final letter is selected. The game will indicate whether the path is accepted.
- If the word is not accepted, inspect the route rather than merely trying to move faster. One skipped, repeated or non-touching letter changes the answer.
On a small screen, your finger can hide the next letter. Slow down, use a larger display if one is already available, or rotate the device if that makes the board easier to see. These are viewing choices, not requirements for solving the puzzle.
When a promising word fails
- Check adjacency: every step must touch the previous letter, including diagonal moves.
- Check the spelling: a theme-related idea is not enough if the letters do not form the intended word.
- Check the theme: the answer must fit the day’s concept unless it is being used as a non-theme word for a hint.
- Try a different route: a path can bend, and a visually tempting straight line may not be the accepted sequence.
Use the built-in hint system without losing the solve
Strands rewards exploration with hints. Find three valid words that are not theme answers and the game awards a hint. The hint highlights the letters that make up a theme word; it does not automatically complete the answer for you.
- Trace a word you believe is valid but that does not belong to the theme.
- Continue until the game has accepted three such non-theme words.
- Use the resulting hint when it appears. Note the highlighted letters and work out the word they form.
- Trace that highlighted path yourself to submit the theme word.
If a hint has not appeared, verify that all three exploratory words were accepted. A word that looked valid but was rejected does not count, and a theme answer is not the same as a non-theme word for this purpose.
Find the spangram
The spangram names the puzzle’s theme and runs between opposite sides of the board. Search for a long, theme-defining word or phrase whose letters can be connected through neighboring positions. Because the path may turn, follow the letter-to-letter route instead of expecting a straight stripe across the grid.

Once you identify it, trace it like any other answer. Use the theme wording and the letters already visible on the board to test candidates; do not assume that any long word qualifies unless its complete path is connected.
Save the browser page to your home screen
First open the official Strands webpage in the browser, not a search-results page. Then open the browser’s page or sharing menu and choose the current command for adding that page to the device’s home screen. The command may be labelled “Add to Home Screen,” “Add to home screen,” “Add shortcut,” “Install” or something similar. It may also be absent when the browser, operating system or page state does not support it.
iPhone or iPad
In many current Safari versions, the control is reached from the Share button while the Strands page is open, followed by an “Add to Home Screen” option. Confirm the page title and icon, edit the displayed name if the system allows it, and choose the final add command. Apple changes menus across iOS and iPadOS releases, and other iOS browsers can place the same function elsewhere, so use the label shown on your device rather than relying on an identical sequence.

Android phone or tablet
In many Chrome-based Android configurations, open the browser’s three-dot menu while viewing Strands and look for “Add to home screen,” “Add shortcut” or an “Install” entry. Confirm the name and destination, then accept the prompt. Android manufacturers and browser versions can rename, move or omit the command; an “Install” choice may represent a web-app style launch on one configuration and a simpler shortcut on another.

Other mobile browsers
Open the browser’s main menu, page menu or share sheet and look for the equivalent home-screen action. If no such action is offered, save the page as a bookmark instead. A bookmark is still a reliable way to return to Strands, but it is not the same as a home-screen icon.
Verify the result
- Return to the device’s home screen and locate the new icon.
- Tap it once and confirm that it opens the Strands webpage, not a search result or an unrelated tab.
- Check that the page is still signed in if your account requires sign-in.
- If the icon opens an old or blank page, delete that shortcut and create a new one from the correctly loaded Strands page.
What the shortcut does—and does not do
A home-screen shortcut points to the website. It does not, by itself, establish that Strands has been installed as a native application. Depending on the browser and operating-system configuration, the shortcut may open in a normal browser tab, in a browser window with reduced browser controls, or in a web-app-like presentation. The available evidence does not establish one behavior for every supported device.
The separate NYT Games app remains an optional route. Installing the app and creating a browser shortcut are different actions, so choose one or keep both without treating the shortcut as proof that the app is installed.

Subscription and account access
The New York Times Help Center says subscribers with All Access, Home Delivery or Games access can access everything Games offers. It also says that non-subscribers and subscribers without Games have limited access. That general statement does not specify the exact entitlement for the daily Strands puzzle in every region, plan or account state.
If the browser or app shows a paywall or an access notice, read the notice associated with your account. Signing in can restore access that is already included with your plan; it cannot convert a browser shortcut into a subscription. Do not infer your entitlement solely from whether the page or app opens.
Troubleshoot common mobile problems
The page will not load
- Confirm that the device is online and reload the official page.
- Close duplicate tabs and reopen the page from the browser’s history or bookmark.
- Temporarily check whether a content blocker or restrictive browser setting is preventing the game interface from loading.
- Try the NYT Games app if it is already installed, or try the browser route if the app is the part that is failing.
The board is difficult to read or trace
- Zoom only if the browser allows it without hiding part of the board; then return to the normal view before tracing.
- Use the device’s larger screen or rotate it when that makes letter spacing clearer.
- Drag slowly enough to see each horizontal, vertical or diagonal connection.
A word is rejected
- Recheck every neighboring step, including diagonal transitions.
- Make sure you lifted your finger only after the final letter.
- Test whether the candidate actually matches the theme.
- Remember that rejected words do not contribute to the three-word hint requirement.
The hint did not appear
Count only accepted non-theme words. After the third accepted word, look for the hint state or highlighted letters. If the board has not updated, reload only after noting your progress, because a refresh can change the current session state.
The home-screen command is missing
Check that you are viewing the webpage itself rather than a search result, an embedded preview or a private browsing mode with restricted shortcut support. Open the browser’s page, share and overflow menus. If the command still does not exist, keep a bookmark or use the NYT Games app; the exact menu is not identical across browsers and operating-system releases.
The icon opens the wrong page
Remove the icon and recreate it after navigating to the official Strands page and waiting for it to finish loading. Confirm the title before accepting the browser’s save prompt.
A simple routine for playing on mobile
- Open Strands from the browser shortcut, a bookmark or the NYT Games app.
- Read the theme before selecting letters.
- Scan the 6-by-8 board for connected candidates, allowing horizontal, vertical and diagonal moves.
- Trace clear theme words first, then use accepted non-theme words toward a hint when needed.
- Search for the spangram that names the theme and crosses between opposite sides.
- When finished, close the page or leave the shortcut in place for the next puzzle.
The practical choice is straightforward: use the browser if a website shortcut is what you want, or use the NYT Games app for an app-based entry point. In either case, the solving method is the same—connect neighboring letters, follow paths that can bend, use the three-word hint opportunity, and trace the spangram yourself.
