Start by learning the controls, checking the Elder’s house, and preparing a small supply run before entering a cave. Gather wood, craft a Wood Pickaxe and torches, carry food and healing items, and use the Elder’s quests as signposts. Once you have a safe staging area, place the Settlement Flag, recruit settlers, and explore outward instead of treating the first dungeon as a race.
Necesse is a top-down action-adventure and settlement-building game set in a procedurally generated, seamless world. You can play alone or with others. The exact recipes and balance may change as the game updates, so treat quantities below as the current guidance from the community-maintained official wiki and verify them in your live game.

What you should do first in Necesse
Your first session has four jobs: understand the interface, turn the starting area into a resupply point, make your first cave trip survivable, and establish a settlement that can support later expeditions. You do not need to discover every system immediately.

- Find the Elder: the Elder is the early guide and quest giver. His quests offer rewards and a practical sense of intended progression.
- Inspect the house: the Elder’s house can contain a Workstation, supplies and a Settlement Flag.
- Gather before descending: collect logs and saplings, make a Wood Pickaxe and torches, and bring food and healing.
- Build a repeatable base loop: use the settlement as a place to store, craft, recruit and prepare for the next trip.
If the world-start option places you in a Forest near the Elder’s house, you have a convenient first hub. Do not assume that every world or biome begins with exactly the same layout; use the map and nearby landmarks to locate your own starting resources.

How to set up your first day
1. Learn the interface before leaving the starting area
Spend a few minutes confirming how you move, attack, interact, open the inventory, craft, use consumables and read quests. Knowing these actions before entering a cave prevents the most expensive beginner mistake: standing still while trying to remember a menu or hotkey.
Open the map and note the Elder’s house, nearby trees and the route back to safety. A short, familiar loop is more valuable than a long first expedition because it lets you replace supplies quickly after an unexpected defeat.
2. Read the Elder’s quests
The Elder is both a tutorial guide and a source of rewards. His quests point toward the game’s intended early activities without removing your freedom to roam. Read the objective, check what it requires, and use it to decide which resource or location to visit next. You can follow the quests closely or treat them as optional signposts if you prefer self-directed exploration.
3. Check the house before crafting from scratch
Inspect containers and stations in the Elder’s house. The house can provide a Workstation and starting supplies, saving you from immediately rebuilding equipment that is already available. It also gives you a reference point for returning home after a cave run.
4. Gather a small reserve of wood
Use the starting Wood Axe to collect logs and saplings. Keep enough material for tools, torches and basic construction rather than spending every log on decorative walls. The first reserve should make it possible to replace a tool, relight a route and expand a shelter without another dangerous trip.
What to bring into your first cave
Light, recovery items and an exit plan matter more than squeezing in one extra piece of equipment. The beginner guide specifically emphasizes a Wood Pickaxe, torches, food and healing items.

| Item or preparation | Current beginner guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Pickaxe | The guide lists 2 Oak Logs for the recipe; confirm the recipe in the live game because crafting requirements can change. | Lets you mine through the early underground areas. |
| Torches | The guide lists 10 Logs plus 10 Saplings for 40 Torches; verify the quantity after updates. | Darkness can conceal cave enemies and hazards, making light a survival tool rather than decoration. |
| Food | Bring several usable portions rather than relying on hunger recovery alone. | Food restores hunger and can provide buffs, so it improves both endurance and combat readiness. |
| Healing items | Carry whatever healing consumables you can make or obtain before leaving. | A mistake underground should cost a healing item, not an entire expedition. |
| Return route | Keep the route to the surface recognizable and avoid exploring every branch on the first trip. | A short retreat is safer when health, light or inventory space runs low. |
Recipes in this table are version-sensitive instructions from the wiki’s beginner guide, not permanent constants. If your game shows different requirements, follow the in-game recipe and use the same preparation principle.

Light every section you intend to use
Place torches as you advance instead of saving them for a perfect return trip. The wiki warns that darkness hides enemies and hazards. A lit path also makes it easier to recognize where you have already been and where to retreat.
Clear a small area before mining deeper
Do not tunnel forward while enemies or hazards remain in the immediate area. Create enough room to move, attack and withdraw. Your first objective is a controlled route, not maximum depth.
Use food before you are desperate
Food does more than refill hunger: it can provide buffs. Use it according to the item’s effect and your situation, especially before a difficult encounter or a longer branch of caves. Keep healing items available for damage rather than treating food as an emergency substitute.
Return when the trip stops being profitable
Turn around when your health is falling, your light is nearly gone, your inventory is full or the route back is becoming confusing. Banking a modest haul and returning with a better plan is faster than losing the entire run.
Plan for the Forest’s night cycle
The beginner guide specifically warns that hostile zombies appear at night in the Forest. This is a Forest warning, not a rule that every biome has the same encounter pattern. If night is approaching, shelter near your base or return while the route is still clear; if you stay outside, be ready to fight rather than assuming the area will remain quiet.

How to start a settlement
Settlement-building is not a side activity you postpone forever. It turns your starting area into infrastructure for exploration.
- Choose a practical location. Use the Elder’s house and nearby resources as your initial reference. Leave room for storage, work areas and future housing instead of filling the entire area with decoration.
- Place the Settlement Flag. The beginner guide identifies the flag in the Elder’s house as the item that starts a settlement when placed.
- Make the site easy to resupply. Keep storage and crafting close to the return path so you can unload, heal and restock without a long detour.
- Recruit settlers as the game allows. Settlers provide specialists and labor that make later expeditions easier to support. Recruitment availability depends on your progression and the systems unlocked in your world.
- Add useful work rather than only walls. The developer’s materials describe farms, workshops and resource-gathering roles. Prioritize functions that shorten your preparation loop.
- Improve defenses as threats grow. The developer also describes guards and traps. Treat defense as a developing system; do not assume every defensive option is available at the start.
A useful early base answers three questions at a glance: Where are my supplies? Where do I craft? Which direction is the next expedition? If you can answer those questions quickly, the settlement is doing its job.
Which biome should you explore next?
The official progression guide presents a helpful early route:
| Stage | Suggested area | How to use the suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forest Caves | Learn underground movement, lighting and resource gathering near the starting biome. |
| 2 | Snow Caves | Move into a new environment after your first cave routine is reliable. |
| 3 | Forest Dungeon | Use the dungeon as a more structured challenge after gaining early equipment and confidence. |
| 4 | Plains Caves | Continue the cave-and-upgrade loop in another region. |
| 5 | Swamp Caves | Explore after your supplies and combat plan can handle longer or less familiar trips. |
| 6 | Desert Caves | Use your established settlement and transport routine to support the next region. |
| 7 | Pirate Village | Reach this later destination when the route, quests or your own exploration lead you there. |
This is an intended route, not a mandatory checklist. The progression page explicitly says it is not the only way to advance. You may follow quests, pursue a nearby resource, discover a different cave entrance or play with friends and choose a different order. Use the sequence when you want structure; depart from it when the world gives you a better local objective.
How to make exploration sustainable
Build around resupply, not one-way journeys
Every expedition should have a return point. Store spare torches, food and healing at the settlement, then carry only what the trip needs. This reduces the cost of a failed attempt and leaves room for materials you discover underground.
Expand your map knowledge gradually
Explore in rings around familiar locations: first the area around the Elder’s house, then the nearest cave network, then the next biome. A gradual map gives you recognizable landmarks and prevents a single wrong turn from becoming a survival problem.

Let quests and discoveries work together
Quests provide direction, while exploration reveals opportunities the quest list may not mention. Check the Elder’s objectives before leaving, but do not ignore a useful nearby route simply because it is not the current objective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the settlement to support specialists
The developer describes settlers with different roles, farms and workshops that acquire resources and prepare expeditions. As those systems become available, assign the settlement tasks that remove repetitive preparation from your personal runs. Keep your own character focused on the dangerous or discovery-oriented work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solo or multiplayer: which approach suits a beginner?
Necesse supports both solo and multiplayer play. Neither mode has an evidence-based universal difficulty ranking, so choose according to the kind of learning and pacing you want.
| Choice | Best when you want | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Control over the pace and a quiet environment for learning controls, crafting and settlement management. | You make every preparation decision and can pause your expansion to practice a system. |
| Multiplayer | Shared exploration, coordinated combat and divided settlement work. | Agree on who carries light, food, healing and building materials before entering a cave. |
In multiplayer, communicate the return condition before a trip: for example, leave when one player is low on health or when the group runs short of torches. In solo play, write the same rule for yourself by checking supplies before each departure.
Build flexibility and combat preparation
The official developer press kit says: “Change up your build any time – your character is never locked to one build, allowing you to mix and match and find the best setup for the situation.” For a beginner, that means you do not need to make a permanent class decision during the first hour.
Use that flexibility to match the immediate task:
- Choose equipment and abilities that make cave movement and survival more reliable while learning the environment.
- Change your setup when a dungeon, biome or group role demands a different approach.
- Keep more than one useful option available if your inventory and resources permit, rather than assuming one build must solve every encounter.
The key is to change deliberately. Before leaving, decide whether the trip is for mining, combat, scouting or settlement supplies, then carry the tools and consumables that support that purpose.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Going underground with no light
Symptom: enemies or hazards appear before you can react. Fix: craft torches before the trip and place them as you advance. If the route is already dark, retreat rather than guessing your way forward.
Carrying no food or healing
Symptom: a minor mistake ends an otherwise successful expedition. Fix: make food and healing part of the departure checklist, not an afterthought.
Treating the progression route as compulsory
Symptom: you ignore a nearby objective because it is not the next item in the listed sequence. Fix: use the Forest Caves-to-Pirate Village route as a guide, while following quests and local discoveries when they make more sense.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Building a decorative base before a useful one
Symptom: storage, crafting and resupply are spread out or hard to find. Fix: establish a compact work-and-storage area first, then expand and decorate after the expedition loop works.
Assuming every feature is available immediately
Symptom: you search for farms, guards, traps or specialist roles before the game has made them available. Fix: treat the developer’s settlement description as the direction the system develops toward, and unlock or recruit features through normal progression.
Ignoring the night warning in the Forest
Symptom: zombies appear while you are far from shelter. Fix: watch the day/night cycle, return before night when possible, and keep a combat-ready route home when it is not.
Version, platform and availability context
Necesse’s official 1.0 release date was October 16, 2025. The developer’s press materials list PC, Mac and Linux through Steam. The official wiki is being updated for version 1.0 and later and includes later major-update entries, including 1.3. Because recipes, balance and labels can change, check the live game and wiki for exact values before relying on an old crafting number.
