The right way to keep sound playing with no picture depends on your device. On an iPhone, built-in Background Sounds can play downloaded rain or ocean audio after you lock the phone. For YouTube audio on a phone, background playback requires a qualifying YouTube Premium membership. On a Roku TV, a screen-off feature can keep audio playing while the picture is off.

Play ambient sounds on an iPhone
For simple nature audio such as rain or ocean waves, iPhone’s Background Sounds avoids the need to keep a video playing. Apple’s current iOS 26 guide explains that the chosen sound file downloads to the device. See Apple’s instructions for Background Sounds.
- Open Settings and go to Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds.
- Turn on Background Sounds, choose a sound, and adjust its volume.
- Set whether sounds stop when the iPhone is locked. If you want playback to continue with the display off, make sure the setting allows it.
- Lock the phone and check that playback continues as intended. You can also add Background Sounds to Control Center for quicker access.
If you want the audio to stop automatically, set the available timer rather than relying on playback to end on its own. Menu labels can change with iOS updates, so check the current settings on your device.
Keep YouTube or YouTube Music playing on a phone
YouTube’s mobile background playback is tied to a YouTube Premium membership account. YouTube Music says Premium members can listen while using other apps or with the screen off; its available controls and experience can differ in selected countries or regions. - Open the official YouTube or YouTube Music mobile app and sign in to the account with the qualifying membership.
- Start the nature-sound video, meditation music, or other audio you want to hear.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app. If audio stops, confirm that you are signed into the right account and check the app’s current background-play controls and regional availability.
Do not assume that background playback is available to every account or works identically in every country. If you only need ambient sounds rather than a particular YouTube recording, iPhone Background Sounds is a built-in alternative.
Turn off the picture on a Roku TV
If you mean that the television’s sound should continue while its picture goes dark, Roku documents a screen-off listening feature for Roku TVs. Its support instructions cover audio from apps including YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora. The feature is specific to Roku TVs; do not assume the same controls are available on another TV brand or an external streaming player. Follow Roku’s current instructions for keeping audio playing with the TV screen off, since the control method can depend on the TV and its software.

Use sleep audio and timers carefully
For bedtime listening, set a timer in the app or device before putting the phone away, then test that your chosen audio continues after locking. Calm documents sleep audio, playlists, and a sleep timer. Its Play sounds outside the app setting is distinct from a playlist timer: it controls how long a Scene sound continues after a meditation or Sleep Story ends. Spotify also documents that video podcast visuals play only while on-screen: when you navigate away or lock the device, only audio plays. Canvas visuals do not continue in the background and can be disabled in settings. Those details apply to the documented Spotify surfaces, not necessarily every app or playback mode. Troubleshoot when audio stops or the screen stays on
- iPhone Background Sounds stops when locked: Return to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds and check the setting for whether sounds stop when the iPhone is locked.
- YouTube audio stops when you lock the phone: Check that the official app is signed in to the account with YouTube Premium, then verify that background play is available for your account and region.
- The TV picture remains on: Confirm that the device is a Roku TV and follow Roku’s current screen-off instructions. An external streaming player or a different TV platform may not provide the Roku TV feature.
- Sleep audio runs too long or ends too soon: Check which timer you set. In Calm, a playlist timer and the setting for Scene sounds after a meditation or Sleep Story control different playback situations.
- Visuals disappear but audio continues: That can be expected for Spotify video podcasts when leaving the app or locking the device; Spotify says only audio plays in that situation.
