Plug the external USB drive into your Xbox One, open the Media Player app, select the attached drive, browse to the video file and play it. Microsoft introduced this USB playback in the Xbox One Media Player app in 2014, when Major Nelson wrote on Xbox Wire: “Play media files from an attached USB device with the new media player app.”
Whether a particular movie plays depends mostly on its codecs, not on the drive. The sections below cover the steps and the checks to run when a drive or file doesn’t work.

Steps to play a movie from a USB drive
- Copy the movie files to the drive on a computer. Use a file you can already play elsewhere. Your first test should be a small, ordinary video.
- Connect the drive to the Xbox One. Plug it directly into a USB port on the console, not through a hub. Make sure the connection is secure.
- Open the Media Player app. Install it from the Microsoft Store on the console if it isn’t already on your system.
- Select the USB drive from the sources the app shows.
- Browse to the movie and open it.
If the console asks you to format the drive
Stop and check what is on the drive. Formatting erases everything on it. The sources I reviewed don’t establish a current filesystem requirement for movie playback in Media Player, so don’t assume you have to format the drive for games or that one filesystem is guaranteed to work. If the drive holds files you need, copy them elsewhere first. Check Xbox Support’s current guidance for your console before you change anything.
Troubleshooting
The drive doesn’t appear
- Reconnect it directly to the console and check that the cable is firmly seated.
- Restart the console, then plug the drive in again.
- If it still doesn’t show, look up Xbox Support’s current media-storage requirements for your console before reformatting the drive.
The drive appears, but no movies are listed
- Confirm on a computer that the files actually copied to the drive.
- Try a small, common video file. Microsoft’s documentation doesn’t specify whether folder depth or filenames affect discovery, so I won’t claim a specific limit.
A movie is listed but won’t play
Suspect the codecs. A file’s extension, such as .mp4 or .mkv, only names the container. The video codec and audio codec inside it decide whether the console can decode it. Test a second file with different encoding to see whether the problem is the file or the setup. Re-encoding a stubborn file to a widely supported format, such as H.264 video with common audio, is a sensible fix.

The picture isn’t 4K
Check your console model first. The original Xbox One is limited to 1080p. Microsoft’s UWP documentation lists 4K and HDR10 video playback from the Xbox One S onward. Those are platform capabilities. The file’s resolution, its encoding and your TV or display settings also have to cooperate.
What formats does Xbox One support?
Microsoft doesn’t publish a complete consumer chart for the Media Player app. Its developer page, “Supported technologies on Xbox” (last updated 2022-10-24), describes what the platform can decode. Treat it as guidance, not a guarantee for every local file:

The 2014 Xbox Wire announcement also named MPEG-2 TS and MKV among formats planned for a later addition. That is historical context, not a current list of supported formats.

- Console model: this sets your resolution ceiling.
- Container, video codec and audio codec: all three matter.
- Playback route: the local USB Media Player is separate from streaming or other apps, which may support different formats.
- Drive changes: know whether a setup asks you to format or alter the drive.
Any USB external drive can serve as a movie library, and Seagate’s support listing for its Xbox One game drive also describes storing and playing media through Media Player. No specific model is required. Microsoft’s sources don’t promise compatibility with any particular drive.
