You can play a modded Minecraft: Java Edition world with friends without renting or configuring a dedicated server. Use Open to LAN when everyone is on the same network, Essential when you want an in-game host-and-invite flow, or e4mc when a LAN world must be reachable by friends over the internet. In the last two options, the person who opens the world is still the host: the game must remain running, and the world is unavailable when that host leaves.

Before choosing a method, make every player’s Minecraft version, mod loader and installed mods match the host’s profile. A multiplayer connection can fail even when the feature itself is working if one player has a different loader, mod version or configuration.

What “without a server” actually means
A dedicated server is a separate Minecraft process that stays online independently of any player’s game client. The methods in this guide avoid that separate process. Instead, one player opens a single-player world for other players to join.
That distinction matters. The host’s computer runs the world simulation, keeps the save file and supplies the connection. If the host closes Minecraft, loses internet access or leaves the world, the session ends for everyone. These methods are therefore best for scheduled play, not for a world that must be available around the clock.

The workflows here are for Minecraft: Java Edition. They do not describe Bedrock Edition’s Realms or console-specific multiplayer systems. Every participant should launch the same Java profile that the host uses, including the same Minecraft version, mod loader and required mod set.
Pick the right method

The first three choices solve different connection problems. Open to LAN is the least complicated when all players are genuinely on the same reachable network. Essential is convenient for invitations. e4mc extends the familiar LAN workflow to remote players without requiring manual router port forwarding. None of them creates a persistent, independent world.

Check compatibility before opening the world
Most “connection refused,” “incompatible version” and crash reports are profile mismatches rather than networking failures. Perform these checks on every computer before troubleshooting the connection itself.

- Edition: Confirm that everyone is using Java Edition, not a Bedrock installation.
- Game version: The host and joiners must launch the same Minecraft version. e4mc releases are tied to particular game versions, so verify the release description before installing.
- Loader: Match the mod loader used by the pack. A Fabric profile cannot normally join a Forge profile simply because both display the same Minecraft version.
- Mods and versions: Install the exact required mods, with matching versions and configuration where the pack requires it. Essential’s modded-world guidance specifically requires every player to have the same mods.
- Profile selection: Launch the intended modded instance, not an unmodded profile with a similar name.
- Save backup: Copy the world folder before the first multiplayer session. A crash, incompatible mod or accidental block change can affect the shared save.
- Permissions: Decide who is trusted to join and edit the world. A host’s single-player save becomes a shared world during the session.
Do not assume that an entire modpack is compatible merely because its launcher starts. Test the exact pack, version and loader combination your group plans to use.
Option 1: Open a modded world to LAN
Use the built-in LAN feature when every player is on the same local network, or on a virtual network that makes the computers reachable as if they were local. This path requires no extra multiplayer mod.
Host steps
- Launch the modded Java profile and open the single-player world you want to share.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Select Open to LAN.
- Choose the available game options, such as the game mode and whether cheats are allowed for that session.
- Select Start LAN World. Minecraft displays a chat message with the port assigned to the LAN session.
Friend steps
- Launch the matching modded profile.
- Open Multiplayer from the title screen.
- Wait for the LAN world to appear under available local games, then select it and choose Join Server.
- If discovery does not show the world, choose the option to add or connect directly and enter the host’s local IP address followed by the port shown in the host’s chat message, using the format
local-ip:port.
What LAN can and cannot do
LAN discovery is limited to the network that can reach the host. A private address such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x is useful to another computer on the same reachable network; it is not a public internet address. Sending that address to a friend in another home will not make the world reachable.

If discovery fails even though everyone is in the same building, check that the computers are not isolated by a guest Wi-Fi network, that the host’s firewall allows Java or Minecraft, and that everyone is connected to the same network segment. A work, school or hotel network may block device-to-device traffic intentionally. In that situation, use a network that permits local connections or choose a remote-hosting method instead.
Option 2: Host and invite friends with Essential
Essential adds an in-game hosting and invitation flow. Its documented sequence is to choose Host, select a world, start hosting and add invited friends. This can be easier for groups that do not want to exchange IP addresses or explain the LAN menu.
Install and prepare the host
- Install the Essential release that supports the host’s Minecraft version and mod loader into the same modded instance as the world.
- Make sure the host can launch that instance and open the target world in single-player before inviting anyone.
- Have every participant install the same gameplay mods and use the same Minecraft version and loader. Essential’s modded-session requirement is strict: a player with a different mod set may be unable to join or may crash during loading.
Start a hosted session
- Launch the prepared profile.
- Use Essential’s in-game menu and select Host.
- Choose the world to share.
- Start hosting, then use the invitation controls to add the friends who should join.
- Keep Minecraft running and remain in the world for the duration of the session.
Essential documents a maximum of eight simultaneous players. That is a product limit for connected players, not a measurement of general Minecraft server capacity. If your group is larger, the documented limit means this method does not meet the requirement.

Important limitation
Essential is free world hosting from the host’s game session, not an always-online server. Essential’s guide states that the host needs to be online because the host acts as the server. Closing the game, disconnecting or stopping the hosted world removes the connection for everyone else.
If an invitation fails
- Confirm that the invitee launched the same modded profile rather than vanilla Minecraft.
- Compare the complete mod lists and versions, not just the name of the modpack.
- Check that the host has actually started hosting the selected world instead of merely opening it in single-player.
- Have the invitee leave and relaunch the profile after adding or updating mods; many loaders do not apply changes safely while the game is open.
- Check firewall or security software on the host if invitations arrive but the connection never completes.
Option 3: Use e4mc to expose a LAN world remotely
e4mc takes the normal LAN workflow and makes the host’s session reachable to remote friends through a temporary public address. The host installs the compatible e4mc file, opens the world to LAN as usual, and shares the address that the mod displays.
Install the correct release
- Identify the host’s exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
- Download the e4mc release that matches both. Releases change, so check the project listing for current version and loader compatibility before placing the file in the instance’s
modsfolder. - Launch the host’s modded profile and verify that the game reaches the title screen without a loader error.
- Give friends the matching Minecraft and modpack setup. The e4mc project indicates that joiners normally do not need the e4mc mod itself, but they still need compatible Minecraft content and the same required gameplay mods as the host.
Open and share the session
- Load the world on the host.
- Press Esc and select Open to LAN.
- Choose the session settings and start the LAN world.
- Copy the public address e4mc displays and send it privately to the players who should join.
- Keep the world open and maintain internet connectivity. If the session closes, stop sharing the old address.
Join from another location
- Launch the compatible modded profile.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Use Direct Connection or the server-add option and paste the current e4mc address exactly as shown.
- Join the server. If the host opens a new session later, request the newly generated address instead of reusing an old one.
e4mc avoids manual router port forwarding, but it does not turn the save into an independent server. The address is associated with the running host session, and the host’s computer still performs the world simulation.
Common e4mc mistakes
- Wrong loader or version: Install an e4mc build for the host’s exact profile. A release for a different loader may not load at all.
- Address copied incorrectly: Paste the complete address, including its port or other punctuation, without adding spaces.
- Old address reused: Treat each new LAN session as a new connection and share the current address.
- Joiner missing pack mods: e4mc supplies the connection path; it does not supply the gameplay mods. Install the pack separately on every joining computer.
- Host left the world: Reopen the world to LAN and distribute the new address when the session ends.
Troubleshoot by symptom

Protect the save and the people joining it
Because the host owns the world file, use a simple routine before each multiplayer session:
- Exit the world cleanly and make a dated copy of the save folder.
- Keep the backup outside the active game directory so a launcher repair cannot overwrite both copies.
- Only invite people you trust with the ability to place, break or move items in the world.
- Agree on which player can change game rules or use commands when the LAN or Essential settings offer that choice.
- Do not post an e4mc address publicly. Share it only with the intended players and replace it when the host starts a new session.
- After a crash, make a fresh backup before attempting repairs or removing mods.
Do not expose a private local IP to strangers as a substitute for a public address. For remote play, use the invitation workflow or the current e4mc address rather than publishing network details in a public chat.
When a dedicated server is the honest answer
Choose a dedicated or hosted server when the requirement is “the world must be available even when the original host is offline.” That approach changes the project: the world runs in a separate process, players connect to that process, and someone must handle installation, updates, backups, access control and troubleshooting. A hosted service can add a recurring charge; self-hosting can add hardware, bandwidth and maintenance work.
If everyone plays at the same scheduled times and one person is happy to keep the game open, Open to LAN, Essential or e4mc avoids those server-management tasks. If players need to log in independently throughout the day, the host-dependent methods will eventually become inconvenient regardless of which one initially connects most easily.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Open to LAN if all players are on one reachable network and you want zero additional mods.
- Choose Essential if friends are remote and an in-game Host-and-invite flow is more important than using the vanilla LAN menu.
- Choose e4mc if you want to open the world to LAN normally but let remote friends join through a temporary public address without configuring router port forwarding.
- Choose a dedicated or hosted server only when the world must continue running without the original player.
Whichever path you select, synchronize the Java version, loader and complete mod set first, back up the save, and remember that a host-dependent session ends when the host’s game session ends.
