Start with VLC. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and other platforms, opens MKV files without a separate codec pack, and usually handles the HEVC (H.265) and AV1 streams inside them. If Windows’ built-in player reports a missing codec, install Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extension or AV1 Video Extension, depending on the stream. When playback still stutters or shows a black screen, identify the actual codec, update the graphics driver, and test hardware-accelerated decoding.
The important distinction is that MKV is a container, not a video format. An .mkv file might contain H.264, HEVC, AV1, another video codec, several audio tracks, subtitles, HDR metadata, or a combination of these. The filename alone cannot tell you what your computer must decode.

What MKV, HEVC and AV1 actually mean
MKV is the container
Matroska, identified by the .mkv extension, is a container. It packages one or more video streams, audio streams, subtitle tracks, chapters and metadata in one file. The container does not determine whether playback will be easy: a low-resolution H.264 stream and a demanding 10-bit AV1 stream can both use the MKV extension.

HEVC/H.265 and AV1 are video codecs
HEVC, also called H.265, compresses video more efficiently than older H.264 at comparable quality, but decoding it can require a newer CPU, GPU or operating-system codec. AV1 is a newer, highly compressed codec with similar trade-offs: support varies by hardware generation, driver and player. Audio is separate again; an unsupported audio codec can cause silence even when the picture is decoded correctly.

Why the extension cannot diagnose the problem
A player must first recognize the container, then select decoders for each stream, synchronize them and send the decoded frames to your display. A message saying “missing codec” may refer to the video, the audio, or a subtitle-related component. Check the stream details instead of installing a random codec pack.
The quickest solution: open the file in VLC
VideoLAN describes VLC as a free, open-source, cross-platform player that plays most multimedia files. Its built-in demuxers and decoders mean that a normal VLC installation generally does not depend on the collection of system codecs that causes many Windows playback errors.
- Install the current VLC build for your operating system from VideoLAN or your Linux distribution’s trusted repository.
- Launch VLC and drag the MKV file onto its window, or choose Media > Open File and select the file.
- Use the audio-track and subtitle menus if the file contains multiple choices. VLC can expose tracks that a simpler system player hides.
- Let the file play for a minute, including a scene with fast motion or difficult detail. This reveals stutter that may not appear on a static opening frame.
VLC is a strong first test, not a guarantee that every file will play perfectly. A very high-resolution, high-frame-rate or 10-bit stream can exceed the decoder, driver or CPU even when the player supports its codec.

Install the extension named by the error
- HEVC Video Extension: Microsoft says it adds support for the HEVC (H.265) video format.
- AV1 Video Extension: Microsoft says it adds support for the AV1 video format.
Obtain the relevant extension through the Microsoft Store or another trusted installation route described by Microsoft. Install only the extension that matches the codec identified in the file; adding unrelated codec packs can introduce conflicting filters and make diagnosis harder.
Retry the file and confirm the result
- Close and reopen Windows Media Player, the Photos app or the player that showed the error.
- Open the same MKV again. If the video now plays but has no sound, inspect the audio stream separately; the extension may have solved only the video decoder.
- If playback remains jerky, continue with the hardware-decoding and driver checks below rather than repeatedly reinstalling codecs.
Windows support for HDR and 10-bit video also depends on the graphics driver, display and operating-system path, not just on the presence of a codec. A file can therefore open while looking washed out, overly dark or incorrectly colored.
Identify the streams before changing settings
In VLC, start playback and open Tools > Codec Information. Record the information shown for the active video and audio streams:

This check separates a container problem from a decoder problem. For example, a file that VLC identifies as AV1 with 10-bit video and a high frame rate demands more from hardware than an H.264 file with the same extension. If only one audio track fails, selecting another track can restore sound without converting the video.

Fix stutter, dropped frames and black screens
1. Update the graphics driver
Microsoft recommends current graphics drivers for video features such as hardware decoding and HDR. Install the driver supplied for your GPU and operating system, then restart the computer. A driver update can add a hardware decoder, correct a broken acceleration path or fix HDR output without changing the media file.
2. Test VLC’s hardware-accelerated decoding
- Open VLC and choose Tools > Preferences.
- Select Input & Codecs.
- Find the hardware-accelerated decoding setting and test the available mode. Leave it enabled or set to automatic when it works; switch it off temporarily when it causes a black screen, flashing, corrupted colors or crashes.
- Choose Save, close VLC completely and restart it. The decoder choice is not reliably applied until VLC restarts.
- Play the file again and compare motion, frame drops and audio synchronization.
Hardware decoding normally reduces CPU load, but a particular driver, GPU or codec profile can make software decoding more stable. The useful answer is the mode that plays this file correctly on this computer, not a universal “always on” or “always off” rule.
3. Separate decoding from display output
If VLC identifies and decodes the stream but the picture is black, tinted or washed out, test the output chain. Confirm that the operating system recognizes the display, that HDR is enabled only when the display supports it, and that the GPU driver exposes the required 10-bit and HDR path. A display that accepts ordinary SDR may not reproduce HDR metadata correctly.

4. Check the file itself
Try another known-good MKV. If several files play but one fails at the same point, that file may be incomplete or damaged. Copy it again from the original source before changing system settings. If every demanding file fails while simple H.264 files work, the limitation is more likely the decoder, driver or hardware profile.

Platform-specific guidance
Windows
Use VLC when the immediate goal is to open an MKV, HEVC or AV1 file with minimal setup. Use Microsoft’s HEVC or AV1 extension when you specifically need Windows Media Player, Photos or another application that relies on the system codec. Keep the graphics driver current, especially for HDR and 10-bit playback.
macOS
Install the current VLC build when a native macOS player rejects the MKV or its codec. Whether playback is smooth depends on the Mac’s hardware decoder, macOS version, codec profile and connected display. Inspect the active stream in VLC and compare hardware-accelerated and software decoding if motion is uneven.
Linux
Install VLC from the distribution’s trusted repository or VideoLAN’s official downloads. Hardware acceleration depends on the GPU driver stack and distribution configuration. If playback is slow, compare hardware decoding with software decoding and use VLC’s Codec Information view to confirm that the file is not simply using a more demanding profile than expected.
When “any computer” has practical limits
No player can make unsupported hardware decode every stream smoothly. The following characteristics can push a system beyond its decoder, driver, display or CPU:
- High-resolution video, including demanding 4K or higher files
- 10-bit color and HDR metadata
- High frame rates
- Unusual chroma subsampling or a codec profile outside the hardware’s supported range
- Protected content that the player is not authorized to decode
- An audio codec that the selected player or operating system does not support
- A display connection or monitor that cannot accept the file’s HDR or bit-depth output
In these cases, the file may open yet drop frames, desynchronize audio, show incorrect colors or consume nearly all CPU. Lowering the player window does not necessarily reduce decoding work; the stream still has to be decoded at its original resolution and frame rate.
Choose a player using the right criteria
If you are comparing VLC with another player, evaluate the complete playback path rather than the file extension alone.

VLC’s stated advantages are broad multimedia coverage, operation across major desktop platforms and playback without hunting for a separate codec pack. Another player can still be preferable if it handles a particular HDR workflow, subtitle format or hardware path better on your machine; test with the actual file rather than relying on the extension.

Convert only when direct playback is not practical
Conversion is a fallback for a computer that cannot decode the source profile smoothly or for an application that accepts only a narrower set of formats. Make a new copy in a widely supported combination such as H.264 video in an MP4 container with an audio track your target devices support.
- Keep the original MKV. Conversion changes the file and can reduce quality.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate appropriate for the playback device; converting a difficult source to an equally demanding target defeats the purpose.
- Include the audio track and subtitles you actually need, because a conversion may omit alternate tracks.
- Check the converted file from beginning to end, including dialogue, synchronization, seeking and any important subtitles.
Do not convert merely because the extension is MKV. If VLC plays the file smoothly and the tracks are correct, conversion adds an unnecessary generation of processing and possible quality loss.
