Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players also need their console’s online-multiplayer service. If the host cannot stay online, a Bedrock Realm keeps the shared world available for invited players.
Can Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC play Minecraft together?
Yes, when everyone is playing Bedrock Edition. Bedrock supports cross-play among Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, compatible mobile devices, Amazon Fire devices and Chromebook. Players can join one another’s Bedrock worlds, Bedrock Realms and supported LAN games.

The important boundary is the game edition, not the brand of device. Java Edition cannot join a Bedrock world or Realm. A Java player can play with other Java players, but cannot enter the console version’s world. Minecraft’s official guidance summarizes the rule: you need Bedrock Edition to join a Bedrock world, server, Realm or LAN game.
| Player’s device | Edition used for cross-play with consoles | Can join a Bedrock world? |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Bedrock Edition (included with Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition) | Yes |
| Mac or Linux PC | Java Edition | No; Java connects to Java only |
| Xbox | Bedrock Edition | Yes |
| PlayStation | Bedrock Edition | Yes |
| Nintendo Switch | Bedrock Edition | Yes |
| iPhone, iPad or Android | Bedrock Edition | Yes |
Therefore, a Windows player must deliberately launch Bedrock if friends are on consoles. Installing the PC package is not enough if the player opens Java by mistake.

Do we all need Bedrock?
Yes for a mixed-device group. Every participant in a cross-platform session must be running the same Bedrock release family. Bedrock players can mix Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Windows and supported mobile devices. Java players form a separate group and need a Java-hosted world or server.
Windows PC
On Windows, install Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition. The launcher presents both editions; choose Bedrock before joining console friends. Keeping the launcher and game updated reduces version-mismatch errors.
Mac and Linux
The standard desktop edition on macOS and Linux is Java Edition. Those computers cannot join a console-hosted Bedrock world through the normal game editions. A Mac or Linux player who wants this cross-play setup needs a supported Bedrock device, such as a console or compatible mobile device, rather than launching Java on the computer.
Consoles and mobile devices
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch versions are Bedrock. Mobile versions for iOS and Android are also Bedrock, so they can join the same Bedrock session after account and subscription requirements are met.
Microsoft accounts and gamertags
Each player needs a separate Microsoft account. The account supplies the Xbox gamertag that Minecraft uses for friend discovery and invitations. Xbox, Windows and mobile players normally sign in with that account from within the game. PlayStation and Switch players can use a free Microsoft account even though they are not playing on an Xbox console.

PlayStation sign-in
- Open Minecraft and choose Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Note the displayed code and either scan the QR code or open the link shown on the console.
- Enter the code, sign in to the Microsoft account in the browser, and approve the connection.
- Return to Minecraft and wait for the account and gamertag to appear in the profile area.
Use the same Microsoft account on later launches. Creating a second account for the same player can make friends, purchases and Realm invitations appear to be missing.

- Start Minecraft and select Sign in with a Microsoft Account.
- Open the Remote Connection page on a phone or computer as instructed on the Switch screen.
- Enter the one-time code displayed by Minecraft.
- Complete Microsoft sign-in and return to the game after the account is linked.
The Switch player’s Microsoft gamertag is what friends should add, not necessarily the Nintendo account name.
What subscription does each console need?
Online multiplayer on consoles requires the platform’s paid online service. The requirement applies even though the Microsoft account itself is free.
| Platform | Online service required for multiplayer | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Game Pass Core | Players joining online worlds from Xbox |
| PlayStation | PlayStation Plus | Players joining online worlds from PlayStation |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch Online | Players joining online worlds from Switch |
| Windows PC or mobile | No console subscription | Players still need internet access and a Microsoft account |
Subscription names and availability can vary by region and may change with platform policy. Check that the subscription is active on the console profile actually being used by Minecraft. A subscription on a different household profile will not always satisfy the account playing the game.
How do I cross-play Minecraft with friends?
The simplest method is a friend-hosted Bedrock world. The host must keep the game running and remain in the world while others play.

- Update first. Install the latest Minecraft release on every device. A player on an older Bedrock build may fail to see the host or receive a version error.
- Confirm editions. The host and every invitee must launch Bedrock. On Windows, verify the launcher does not show Java as the active game.
- Sign in. Make sure every player is signed in to a Microsoft account and has a visible Xbox gamertag.
- Add one another. From Minecraft’s Play or Friends area, add each person by Microsoft/Xbox gamertag. Check spelling carefully; display names can look similar.
- Meet online-service requirements. Confirm Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online for the applicable console accounts.
- Open the host world. The host selects Play, chooses an existing Bedrock world or creates a new one, and enters it.
- Invite the group. In the in-game pause or player menu, choose the invite option and select the friends’ gamertags.
- Join from the Friends list. Invitees open Play, switch to Friends, select the host’s world and accept the invitation if prompted.
The host world is available only while its owner is online. If the host quits, loses the connection or closes the game, the other players are disconnected and cannot reopen that ordinary world themselves.
What the host should configure
- Use a world with multiplayer enabled in its settings.
- Choose whether visitors can build, mine, fight or use commands; these permissions affect what friends can do after joining.
- Save and back up important worlds before changing major settings or installing add-ons.
- Keep the console or PC connected to a stable network; Wi-Fi interruptions can remove every player from the session.
When should you use a Bedrock Realm?
A Realm is Minecraft’s personal multiplayer server. It keeps the world online so invited friends can play even when the owner is offline. This is the practical choice for a group that plays at different times or does not want one person to act as host every session.
Realms cross-play works only inside one edition. A Bedrock Realm accepts Bedrock players from supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile, Amazon Fire and Chromebook versions; it does not bridge Java and Bedrock.
| Bedrock option | Availability | Displayed US price | Simultaneous players listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realms | Persistent Bedrock server | $3.99 USD per month | Owner plus two invited friends |
| Realms Plus | Persistent Bedrock server with the larger player allowance shown on the plan page | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten simultaneous players |
Those are the US monthly prices displayed by Minecraft when accessed in 2026. Your store may show a different currency, tax treatment or availability. The owner pays for the Realm; invited friends do not need to buy a separate Realm subscription. Console players still need their platform’s online-multiplayer subscription when that platform requires one.
Recommended Free Tools
Starting a Realm
- Open Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Choose the Realms section and select the option to create or start a Realm.
- Select the plan available for your region and complete the platform’s purchase flow.
- Create a new world or upload an existing Bedrock world when prompted.
- Open the Realm’s member settings and add friends by their Microsoft/Xbox gamertags.
- Tell invitees to open Play, choose Friends or Realms, and select the Realm.
Remove former players from the member list when access should end. A Realm is persistent, so anyone who remains invited may be able to enter while the owner is away.

Why can’t my Java PC join my friend’s console world?
The editions use different multiplayer systems. Console versions are Bedrock, while Java Edition on Windows, macOS and Linux is a separate edition. Java cannot join a Bedrock world, Realm or console-hosted session through the standard Minecraft clients.
On a Windows PC that includes both editions, close Java and launch Bedrock from the launcher. On a Mac or Linux computer, launching Java again will not solve the incompatibility; the player needs access to a Bedrock device or must play with the group on a Java world instead.

Privacy, child accounts and permission settings
A correct edition and active subscription are not enough if Microsoft-family or platform privacy controls block multiplayer. Child accounts may need an adult account to allow online play.
- In the Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings, allow Clubs and Multiplayer.
- Allow communication or invitations from friends if the account’s safety settings separate those permissions.
- Check the console’s family-management settings for the specific child profile used to launch Minecraft.
- After changing a permission, sign out of Minecraft and sign back in so the new policy is recognized.
If invitations never arrive, ask both players to verify that they added each other’s current gamertags rather than relying on an old display name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting cross-play problems
The friend or world does not appear
- Confirm that both players are signed in to Microsoft accounts and showing online status.
- Verify that everyone launched Bedrock, not Java.
- Install pending game updates on every device, then restart Minecraft.
- Check that the host has actually entered the world; an unopened world will not appear as joinable.
- Remove and re-add the friend by the exact gamertag if the list is stale.
The game says the versions are incompatible
Update Minecraft on all devices to the latest release offered for each platform. Consoles may need the update to finish downloading before the Play menu becomes available. Do not assume that two devices updated on different days are on the same build; open the title or settings screen and compare the displayed version.

A console player cannot connect online
Check the platform subscription first: Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch Online for Switch. Confirm the subscription belongs to the active player profile, then test the console’s internet connection. A local multiplayer game can work while online multiplayer fails because the subscription or account permission is missing.
The invitation is blocked or multiplayer is disabled
Review Microsoft/Xbox privacy controls and allow Clubs and Multiplayer. For a child account, the family organizer may need to change the setting. Also check the console’s own communication and family restrictions. Restart Minecraft after changing either set of controls.
Players disconnect repeatedly
- Use a stable internet connection and, where possible, reduce other heavy network activity.
- Have the host restart the world and resend invitations.
- Restart the game on every platform to refresh authentication.
- If only one player drops, troubleshoot that player’s network rather than deleting the shared world.
- For an always-online schedule, move the world to a Realm so the session does not depend on one host’s connection.
The Realm is visible but cannot be joined
Check that the invitation was sent to the player’s current Microsoft gamertag, that the player is using Bedrock, and that any required console subscription is active. If the owner replaced the world or removed a member, the player must receive a new invitation. Regional store or account restrictions can also affect a Realm purchase or renewal.
A quick setup checklist
- Every player is on Bedrock; no Java player is included in the console group.
- Windows players selected Bedrock in the Java & Bedrock launcher.
- Every player has a separate Microsoft account and knows the correct Xbox gamertag.
- PlayStation and Switch players completed the browser-code sign-in flow.
- Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players have Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online as applicable.
- Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings allow Clubs and Multiplayer, including for child accounts.
- All devices run the latest Minecraft release and have a stable internet connection.
- The host has opened the world and sent invitations through the Play menu.
- A Realm is used when friends must enter while the owner is offline.
The practical choice for your group
For occasional sessions, have one Bedrock player open a world and invite the rest. For a shared build that should remain available across different schedules, choose a Bedrock Realm. If one member owns only Java on a Mac or Linux computer, that player cannot join the console session; the group must either move everyone to Java or give that player access to Bedrock on a supported device.
