Java Edition and Bedrock Edition cannot join the same official Realm or directly share a multiplayer world. To play together, either move everyone to Bedrock, move everyone to Java, or run a third-party crossplay server that uses Geyser (and usually Floodgate) to translate connections. The best route depends on which devices your group owns, how much setup you want to handle, and whether you need consoles or phones included.

What Java–Bedrock multiplayer actually supports
Minecraft has two separate multiplayer networks. Java Edition is the desktop version for Windows, Linux and macOS. Bedrock Edition is available on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and ChromeOS. Although both editions contain the same basic game, their servers, account flows and network protocols are different.

A Java Realm accepts Java players; a Bedrock Realm accepts Bedrock players. A Java player cannot enter a Bedrock Realm, and a Bedrock player cannot enter a Java Realm. There is no official setting that combines the two editions in one Realm.
As of October 14, 2026, no official announcement has established Java–Bedrock crossplay for Realms. Community requests for that feature are requests, not a product commitment.

Choose the right route for your group
| Route | Who can join | Setup | Ongoing cost and limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyone on Bedrock | Bedrock on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS or ChromeOS | Use a Bedrock Realm or another Bedrock server | Basic Realm: $3.99 USD per month for the owner plus two friends; Realms Plus: $7.99 USD per month for the owner plus 10 other players. Prices are listed figures and should be checked on the current Minecraft site. | Groups containing console, mobile and PC players |
| Everyone on Java | Java on Windows, Linux or macOS | Use a Java Realm, private server or LAN world | Java Realms supports the owner plus 10 other players. The cited official summary did not state a price. | Groups already using computers and Java mods or tools |
| Mixed Java and Bedrock | Java and Bedrock clients connecting to one compatible server | Administer a Java server with Geyser; add Floodgate when Bedrock players need Microsoft-account login without a Java account | Software may be free, but hosting, bandwidth, maintenance and reliability vary. This is third-party, not an official Mojang feature. | Groups that cannot standardize on one edition |
Do not buy a Realm expecting it to bridge editions. First identify every player’s edition and device, then select one of these three routes.
Option 1: Put everyone on Bedrock
Bedrock is usually the simplest choice when even one friend plays on a console or phone. Windows players must launch the Bedrock installation rather than Java. Console and mobile players already use Bedrock.
Start a Bedrock world without a Realm
- Open Bedrock and create or load a world.
- Open the pause menu and use the multiplayer option to invite friends who are signed in to their Microsoft accounts.
- Keep the host’s game running. In a normal hosted world, other players generally lose access when the host leaves.
This costs nothing beyond the game and any platform online-play requirement, but it is unsuitable when friends need to play while the owner is offline.
Use a Bedrock Realm
- In Bedrock, open the Play screen and choose the option to create or start a Realm.
- Select the plan that matches your group size. The basic plan is listed as $3.99 USD per month and allows the owner plus two friends at once (three players total). Realms Plus is listed as $7.99 USD per month, allows the owner plus 10 other players (11 total), and includes the Marketplace library.
- Create a new world or upload an existing Bedrock world when prompted.
- Invite friends through the Realm’s member-management screen. They must use Bedrock on a supported platform and sign in with the appropriate Microsoft account.
- Have each invited player open the Play screen and select the Realm from the Friends or Realms area.
A Realm keeps the world available without the owner staying online. The player caps above describe simultaneous players, not the number of people who can be invited over the life of the Realm. Prices and plan details can change; confirm the current listing and billing currency before subscribing.

Console requirements
Console multiplayer normally requires the console maker’s own active online-subscription tier. Examples include Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or an Xbox Game Pass tier that includes console online multiplayer. The requirement is separate from any Minecraft Realm charge. Check the current rules for the exact console and account region before paying for a Realm.
Option 2: Put everyone on Java
Java works across Windows, Linux and macOS, but it does not accept Bedrock clients. This route is attractive when everyone is on a computer and the group wants Java-only server software, snapshots or Java mod loaders.

Use a Java Realm
- Launch Java Edition and open the Realms section from the main menu.
- Choose the option to create a new Realm, then select a new world or upload an existing Java world.
- Use the Realm’s player-management controls to invite each friend’s Java account.
- Friends open Java Edition, select Realms, and choose the invitation to join.
The official summary lists the Java plan as supporting the owner plus 10 other players (11 simultaneous players) and limits it to Java on Windows, Linux and macOS. The available summary did not state a Java Realm price, so verify the current regional price in the purchase screen rather than assuming it matches a Bedrock plan.
Use a Java LAN world
For people in the same home network, the host can open a single-player Java world to LAN and have other Java players select it from the multiplayer menu. This is temporary: the host must keep the world open, and players outside the local network normally cannot connect without additional networking or server setup.

Use a dedicated Java server
A dedicated server keeps the world running independently of one player’s game. You can operate it on a spare computer or rent hosting, but you become responsible for the server’s Java runtime, updates, backups, firewall rules, permissions and moderation. Hardware, bandwidth and paid-host prices differ widely, so there is no single meaningful cost figure. Make regular world backups before changing the server version or installing plugins.
Option 3: Mix Java and Bedrock with Geyser
Mixed-edition play requires a server that speaks Java’s protocol to Java clients and accepts Bedrock connections through Geyser. Geyser translates the Bedrock connection for a Java server. Floodgate is commonly installed alongside it so Bedrock users can authenticate with Microsoft accounts without owning a separate Java account. This arrangement is maintained by third parties and is not a Mojang Realms capability.
What you need before setup
- A Java server that you control or a host that permits Geyser and Floodgate plugins.
- Permission to install and configure server software, plugins and network ports.
- The server’s public address, plus a Bedrock-compatible port. Port 19132 is commonly used, but the actual value depends on the host and configuration.
- A plan for backups, updates, moderation and keeping the server online.
- Players on supported Java or Bedrock clients. Version compatibility can change when Minecraft updates, so match the server, Geyser build and client versions.
General setup sequence
- Create or select the Java server. Install a current server build appropriate for your Minecraft version, or choose a host that offers plugin access. Start it once so it creates its configuration files, then stop it before editing settings.
- Install Geyser. Add the Geyser plugin or server integration recommended for your server platform. Follow that release’s installation path; plugin names and folder locations vary between server types.
- Install Floodgate when needed. Floodgate handles Bedrock-oriented Microsoft-account authentication. Without it, your setup may require a different account arrangement and can reject Bedrock users.
- Configure the Bedrock listener. Set the address and UDP port in Geyser’s configuration. Use the port supplied by your host when one is assigned; 19132 is only a common default, not a guarantee.
- Open the network path. On a self-hosted server, allow the chosen Java and Bedrock ports through the operating-system firewall and router. A blocked UDP port is one of the most common reasons a Bedrock client cannot see the server.
- Start the server and test locally. Join from Java first, then test Bedrock from a different network if possible. This distinguishes a plugin problem from a home-router or firewall problem.
- Give players the correct connection details. Java players use the server address and Java port in the Java multiplayer screen. Bedrock players enter the server address and the configured Bedrock port in the Add Server form. They should not be given a Java-only port and told to guess the Bedrock port.
- Lock down administration. Use an allowlist, strong operator credentials, regular backups and clear rules. A public address can attract unwanted players and traffic.
Geyser compatibility is not identical to native Bedrock. Some Java mechanics, interface behavior, commands, resource packs or plugins can behave differently for Bedrock users. Check the compatibility notes for the exact Geyser and server versions you install.
Hosted crossplay server versus self-hosting
| Factor | Self-hosted | Paid or managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front software cost | Server software and Geyser/Floodgate can be available without a license fee; electricity, hardware and internet service still cost money. | Monthly fee varies by provider, memory allocation, storage, backups and player load. |
| Technical work | You handle installation, ports, updates, backups and troubleshooting. | The host may provide one-click installation and support, but plugin compatibility and policy limits still apply. |
| Availability | Depends on your computer and internet connection staying online. | Usually designed for continuous uptime, but outages and service changes remain possible. |
| Control | Maximum control over files, versions and permissions. | Convenient controls with less access to the underlying system. |
Neither approach becomes an official Realm. Treat a community server as a separate service: verify that it is online, read its privacy and moderation policies, and keep a local copy of any world you care about.

How to decide in common situations
Xbox, PlayStation or Switch friends plus a PC player
Use Bedrock for everyone. Have the PC player launch Bedrock, then host a Bedrock world or Realm. Console online subscriptions may still be required, and the Realm subscription does not replace them.
Mac or Linux friends with no consoles
Use Java. A Java Realm avoids server administration; a private Java server offers more control and can support Java-specific plugins or mods.
One group split between Java on PC and Bedrock on console
Choose between standardizing on Bedrock, if the PC player has access to that edition, or running a Geyser-based server. A Java Realm alone will not solve the split.
Friends who play at different times
Choose a Realm or an always-on dedicated server. A LAN world or ordinary hosted Bedrock world disappears from the friends’ view when its host stops playing.
Best Value
A modded Java group
Keep the group on Java unless you have confirmed that every required server-side feature works through Geyser. Bedrock clients will not run Java mods, and crossplay translation can limit mechanics that a mod assumes are native to Java.

Troubleshooting connection failures
A Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm
This is expected, not a missing setting. Move that player to Bedrock, use a Java Realm for a Java-only group, or replace the Realm with a Geyser-enabled server.
A Bedrock player sees “unable to connect” on a crossplay server
- Confirm the server address and Bedrock port separately. A Java port alone is insufficient.
- Check that the Bedrock listener is enabled and uses UDP, not only TCP.
- Verify the firewall and router forward the configured port to the server computer.
- Confirm Geyser, Floodgate and the server support the same Minecraft version.
- Test from a second network. If local players connect but mobile-data players cannot, the problem may be router NAT, carrier filtering or a blocked public port.
- Ask the server administrator to confirm that the service is online and that your account is allowed to join.
The player joins but sees glitches or missing features
Check Geyser’s compatibility information for the installed versions and temporarily remove plugins or resource packs that alter protocol behavior. Compare the same action from a Java client and a Bedrock client; a difference may be a translation limitation rather than a player setting.
Friends cannot see a Realm invitation
Verify that everyone is signed in to the intended Microsoft account, that the invite was sent to the correct account identity, and that every player is using the same edition as the Realm. On consoles, check the platform’s privacy and multiplayer permissions and confirm the required online subscription is active.
The world vanished after the host quit
That behavior is normal for a LAN session or a locally hosted Bedrock world. Use a Realm or dedicated server when the world must remain available while the original host is offline.
Security, backups and maintenance
- Back up the world before upgrading Minecraft, changing server software or adding plugins.
- Keep operators to the minimum number of trusted people and use an allowlist for private groups.
- Do not publish a home IP address in a public chat. Share server details only with people you trust.
- Review permissions for every plugin. A crossplay plugin should not automatically receive unrelated administrative access.
- Schedule updates when nobody is playing, and keep the previous server build available until the new one has been tested.
- For a Realm, export or download important worlds periodically so a subscription lapse or accidental change does not become your only copy.
Bottom line: the reliable way to play together
For the least work, put everyone on Bedrock and use a Bedrock Realm when you need an always-online world. For a computer-only group, Java Realms or a Java server are straightforward and preserve Java’s native ecosystem. When Java and Bedrock players must remain mixed, use a properly configured Geyser server with Floodgate where appropriate, and accept the extra administration and third-party dependency. No edition switch, Realm setting or invitation can make a Java Realm and a Bedrock Realm become one shared world.
