The supported way to play Metal Gear Solid 2 without a PlayStation 2 is METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1. It includes the HD Collection version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Steam. Choose PlayStation, Xbox or Steam for Konami’s published 60 FPS target; choose Switch when portability matters more than frame rate.
On PC, the Steam version requires 64-bit Windows 10, an XInput-compatible controller and hardware around an Intel Core i5-7500, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 970. Keyboard and mouse are not supported. Console players can use the collection, or a standalone digital MGS2 listing where their store offers one.

What the modern release actually is
METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 is Konami’s current official release for playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on modern systems. The MGS2 included in the collection is identified by Konami as the “HD Collection version,” rather than a new remake or a native current-generation remake.

Konami’s launch announcement states that the collection is available now. Vol. 1 contains Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, along with bonus material. The digital extras specifically listed for MGS2 include an MGS2 Screenplay Book and an MGS2 Master Book. Depending on your territory and storefront, regional versions and bonus files may be delivered as separate downloads.

The three main games were also offered as standalone digital titles at a launch suggested retail price of $19.99 each in 2023. That was a launch SRP, not a permanent worldwide price. Current prices, bundles, discounts and the availability of a standalone MGS2 listing vary by region and change over time.

The resolution and frame-rate figures are Konami’s published maximum or output targets. They should not be read as a promise that every scene, television or monitor will look identical.
Playing on PS5 or PS4
What to buy
On PlayStation, the straightforward choice is Master Collection Vol. 1. It is the better value when you also want the first and third games and the collection’s bonus material. If your PlayStation Store shows a standalone digital MGS2 listing, that is the way to buy only the second game.

- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 or PS4 and search for METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1, or search for the standalone MGS2 listing if it is available in your territory.
- Check the product description and edition before purchasing. Make sure the listing is the Master Collection version, not an unrelated soundtrack or bonus item.
- Complete the purchase, choose Download, and wait for the game files and any separately listed bonus downloads to finish.
- Launch the collection from your game library and select Metal Gear Solid 2.
- Connect and update your controller before starting if the console requests an input-device update.
Konami’s platform table lists the same headline MGS2 output target for PS4 and PS5. The newer console does not turn this release into a remake; it is still the HD Collection version presented through the Master Collection package.
Playing on Xbox Series X|S
What to buy
The current official Xbox route is Master Collection Vol. 1. Konami documents Xbox Series X and Series S together in its platform information, so the release is presented as one Series-family option rather than separate MGS2 editions.

Installation steps
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox Series console and search for METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1.
- Review the edition and included games, then purchase and install the collection.
- Allow the console to complete the download before launching; bonus content may appear as additional downloadable items depending on your region.
- Start the collection, choose Metal Gear Solid 2, and use the connected Xbox controller.
Xbox Series X|S is one of the console choices for the published 60 FPS target. The platform table gives MGS2 a 1920×1080 output figure, but the final appearance still depends on your display and its scaling settings.
Playing on Nintendo Switch
Physical or digital edition
Switch is the only listed modern platform where the collection is available both physically and digitally. Buy the cartridge if you want a shelf copy and less reliance on a large initial download, or choose the eShop version for immediate access without changing cartridges.
Installation and first launch
- For a physical copy, insert the Master Collection Vol. 1 cartridge and let the Switch check for any available update. For a digital copy, open Nintendo eShop, purchase the collection and select Download.
- Keep enough internal or microSD storage free for the game and any required update or regional bonus downloads.
- Launch the collection from the Home menu and select Metal Gear Solid 2.
- Choose handheld play or dock the console for TV output. The game uses the same collection release in either mode.
Konami documents 1280×720 in handheld mode and 1920×1080 in TV mode, with a 30 FPS target for MGS2. That makes Switch the portability option, not the choice for the highest published frame-rate target.
A Switch display-setting limitation
Konami’s Ver. 2.0.0 notes describe Original and Fine display presets for MGS2, but the same notice says the display-setting feature was unavailable on Nintendo Switch in that update. If you cannot find those controls on Switch, that absence is part of the documented platform behavior rather than a missing menu you need to unlock.
Playing on a Windows PC through Steam
Minimum requirements
Steam’s 2023 listing gives the following minimum figures for the standalone MGS2 Master Collection version:

Konami’s support documentation lists 15 GB for Master Collection Vol. 1 and repeats the controller requirement. Plan for approximately 15–17 GB rather than treating either number as an immutable installation size; patches, language files and regional extras can change the space needed.
Before you purchase
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the Windows 10 requirement.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver before the first launch.
- Connect an XInput controller directly or through a reliable adapter.
- Check that Steam detects the controller in its controller settings before opening the game.
- Reserve more free disk space than the listed minimum so an update does not fail because the drive is full.
Install and launch steps
- Open Steam and search for METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty – Master Collection Version.
- Review the listing, confirm that your PC meets the requirements and purchase the title.
- From your Steam Library, select the game and choose Install. Select a drive with the required free space.
- Connect the XInput controller before launching. Konami explicitly says a controller is required to play.
- Start the game from the library and configure display options after the title screen appears.
Keyboard and mouse are not supported according to Konami’s support article. A connected controller is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional preference. If Steam shows the controller but MGS2 does not respond, close the game, reconnect the device, confirm that it is operating as an XInput pad and launch again.
Resolution, frame rate and display presets
Konami’s platform table gives MGS2 a 1920×1080 output and up to 60 FPS on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Switch is documented separately at 1280×720 in handheld mode, 1920×1080 in TV mode and 30 FPS. These are published platform targets and output modes, not a guarantee that a particular television, monitor, capture device or scene will present an identical image.
Konami’s Ver. 2.0.0 notes describe two MGS2 display presets: Original and Fine. The actual internal resolution and upscaling behavior depends on the platform. Use Original when you prefer the presentation closer to the source material, and Fine when you prefer the alternate scaling treatment offered by the release. On Switch, the same update notice says the display-setting feature was unavailable, so those choices may not appear there.
If the image looks soft on a modern television, first check the television’s aspect-ratio and scaling mode rather than assuming the game is running at the wrong resolution. The published figures describe the console or PC output; your display may apply its own enlargement, sharpening or overscan.

Master Collection versus buying only MGS2

On PlayStation, Konami’s platform guidance specifically notes that a standalone digital listing may be offered. Steam has a standalone MGS2 listing. Konami’s platform information does not identify a standalone Xbox or Switch listing, so those platforms should be approached through the collection unless their current store page says otherwise.

Check the platform before the price
Store pages can show several similarly named products, including soundtracks, books or bonus downloads. Search the exact game or collection name and verify the platform logo, included games and edition description before paying.
Understand launch pricing
The $19.99 figure attached to standalone digital MGS titles was Konami Digital Entertainment’s 2023 launch suggested retail price. It does not establish today’s price in every country, and it does not guarantee that a standalone listing remains available. Sales, taxes, currency conversion and regional storefront rules can all change the final amount.
Physical purchase considerations
A physical Master Collection Vol. 1 copy is the natural format for Switch owners who want a cartridge and for console players who collect boxed releases. Check the regional packaging and the store description because a cartridge or disc can still require downloads for updates or territory-specific bonus material.

Troubleshooting common problems
The game will not recognize my input
- On PC, verify that the controller is XInput-compatible; other input standards are not promised to work.
- Connect the controller before launching MGS2, then restart the game if it was plugged in after startup.
- Close other controller-mapping utilities temporarily so they do not present a conflicting virtual device.
- On console, reconnect the official or compatible gamepad and confirm that the console assigns it to the active player profile.
There is not enough storage
Use the Steam figure of 17 GB and Konami’s 15 GB support figure as a planning range. Free additional space for patches and regional downloads. On Switch, move other software to a microSD card or archive unused titles before starting the download.

The display looks different from screenshots
Verify whether you are playing handheld or docked Switch mode, whether your television is applying overscan, and which display preset is selected on a platform that exposes the Original/Fine controls. Konami’s figures are output targets; they do not describe every display’s processing.
A bonus book or regional item is missing
Konami notes that regional versions and bonus materials may be delivered as separate downloads. Check the collection’s add-on or downloadable-content section for your storefront and territory before assuming the purchase failed.
The PC version starts but performance is poor
- Confirm that the PC meets the listed processor, memory and graphics minimums rather than relying only on the game’s ability to launch.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver.
- Close applications that consume CPU, GPU or memory.
- Check that the game is using the intended graphics device on systems with integrated and discrete GPUs.
- Try the available display preset and your monitor’s native scaling mode, then restart the game after changing major display settings.
The published minimum specification is a baseline for compatibility, not a guarantee of identical performance on every Windows configuration.
Which version should you choose?
Choose PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 or Xbox Series when
- You want a simple console installation with no Windows hardware checks.
- You want the platform table’s 1920×1080 and up-to-60-FPS target.
- You may also play MGS1 and MGS3 from the same collection.
Choose Switch when
- You need to play handheld or move the game between rooms.
- You want the option of a physical collection copy.
- You accept the platform’s 30 FPS target and the documented display-setting limitation in Ver. 2.0.0.
Choose Steam when
- Your PC meets the Windows, processor, memory, graphics and DirectX requirements.
- You already have an XInput controller and do not need keyboard-and-mouse support.
- You want the standalone MGS2 listing and a PC installation rather than a console copy.
For a first-time buyer, the collection is the least ambiguous purchase because it is the consistently documented route across modern consoles and includes all three main games. Buy standalone MGS2 only after confirming that your specific storefront offers that listing and that its regional price suits you.
