Max Payne 3 on PC supports both mouse and keyboard and compatible XInput controllers. Rockstar specifically documents the Xbox 360 pad for Windows as a controller example, and you can switch between a controller and mouse and keyboard while the game is running. The on-screen help changes to the buttons or keys for the method you used most recently.
The safest setup is straightforward: use mouse and keyboard if you want the least device-specific configuration, or connect an XInput controller and make sure the game is using controller ID 1. Steam labels the game “Partial Controller Support,” so that store label should not be read as a promise that every controller or control interface will work identically.

Which controls does Max Payne 3 support on PC?
Rockstar’s PC support information lists two supported ways to play:

- XInput controllers. Rockstar’s example is the Xbox 360 pad for Windows. Other XInput devices may work through the same interface, but the game’s documented behavior is tied to XInput rather than a blanket promise for every USB or Bluetooth controller.
You may change methods without quitting. For example, you can use a controller while moving through a level, touch the mouse to aim, and then return to the gamepad. Rockstar says the in-game help updates to show the keys or buttons belonging to the most recently used method.

Steam’s store metadata calls the game “Partial Controller Support.” That designation is useful context, but it is broader and less specific than Rockstar’s own compatibility notes. It does not mean that all controllers, layouts or Steam Input configurations have been tested or are guaranteed to behave like the named XInput example.
Check the PC and account requirements first
Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 PC requirements page was last updated on March 21, 2024. It lists the following baseline items:

Installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account login and an internet connection. Rockstar also says internet access is used for activation and periodic entitlement verification. Downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements, so treat the dated page as a reference and check the current requirements if your Windows version or hardware differs.

The Steam listing identifies Max Payne 3 as a Rockstar Studios action game released on May 31, 2012. Steam also notes a Rockstar Games third-party account requirement. These account requirements are separate from your choice of controller: a gamepad will not remove the need to activate the PC edition or sign in when required.
Set up an XInput controller
Use this sequence for the controller configuration Rockstar documents most directly.

- Connect the controller. Attach the XInput pad before launching the game, or connect it while the game is running. Rockstar’s named example is the Xbox 360 pad for Windows.
- Make sure the intended device is the active XInput device. Rockstar says that only the first active XInput controller, assigned to ID 1, is used. If several XInput devices are connected, disconnect the extras or make the desired pad the first active device before troubleshooting further.
- Launch or return to the game. Watch the prompts in the menus and during play. Button icons indicate that the game is using the controller; key prompts indicate that mouse and keyboard input is active.
- Test movement and aiming in a safe section. Confirm that both sticks, the action buttons and the triggers respond before beginning a difficult sequence. This identifies a connection problem early without requiring a change to the game’s control files.
- Use the in-game help as the live reference. The prompts are updated for the most recently used control method, so they are the quickest way to tell whether the game has switched from the pad to the mouse or keyboard.
You do not need to buy a controller to play. If you already have a compatible XInput pad, use it; otherwise, mouse and keyboard are officially supported on their own.
What the XInput ID 1 rule means
The ID rule matters most on PCs with multiple pads, virtual devices or a wheel and other USB input hardware. The game does not promise to merge several XInput devices. It uses the first active XInput controller identified as ID 1. If the wrong pad responds, shut down the game, disconnect other XInput devices, connect the intended controller first, and launch again.

The practical fix is to reduce the number of active XInput devices and verify which one receives input.
Using a DirectInput controller
DirectInput devices are a different case. Rockstar lists particular DirectInput controllers with in-game ID numbers and provides a default control scheme for those listed devices. The support information also says that the -joysticktype command-line argument can select a layout; the example is -joysticktype 1.
Rockstar presents this option as a convenience feature for a controller the game detects but does not officially support. It is a possible workaround, not a guarantee that every DirectInput pad will work or that all buttons will map correctly.

A cautious DirectInput procedure
- Check Rockstar’s controller list and identify whether your device has a listed in-game ID.
- Connect only the DirectInput device you intend to test, then start the game and see whether it is detected.
- If the game detects the pad but uses an unsuitable layout, add the documented argument in the game’s launch options as
-joysticktype 1, replacing the number only when Rockstar’s listing gives you a different layout ID. - Restart the game and test every control. A detected device is not the same as a fully supported one.
- Remove the argument if it makes the layout worse or prevents the pad from responding. Return to mouse and keyboard or a supported XInput device if the workaround fails.
Because DirectInput behavior is device-specific, avoid treating a successful layout selection as proof that all DirectInput controllers are officially supported.

Play with keyboard and mouse
Mouse and keyboard are a fully documented PC input method and require no controller configuration. Start the game without a pad connected, or simply use the keyboard and mouse while the game is running. The on-screen help should change to key prompts after keyboard or mouse input is detected.
For exact key assignments, use the official Max Payne 3 PC Manual and the game’s control settings. The manual is the primary reference for the PC control table. Do not rely on a generic PC shooter layout or a console button chart: a key may have a different action in this game, and the most reliable binding is the one shown in your installed version’s settings.
Finding and checking the bindings
- Open the game’s options or settings menu and enter the controls section.
- Review the keyboard and mouse bindings shown there rather than assuming a default from another game.
- Check mouse movement and the actions you use most often in a quiet area of the game.
- If a key does not respond, look for a conflicting assignment or a setting that has been changed from its default.
- Keep the official PC Manual available when a prompt is unclear; it provides the authoritative PC control reference.
Mouse and keyboard versus controller is primarily a preference decision. Familiarity with PC aiming, comfort over a long session and whether you already own an XInput pad are sensible considerations. They are not measured performance results, so choose the method that feels most controllable to you.
Switch between controller and keyboard during play
Max Payne 3 does not require a restart whenever you want to change input methods. Leave the controller connected, move the mouse or press a keyboard key, and the game can recognize that method. Return to the controller when you prefer it.

The visible help is the important confirmation. After a switch, prompts should use the symbols for the most recently active device. If the screen still shows the other method, produce a deliberate input from the device you want to use and wait for the next prompt or menu interaction to refresh.
Mixed use can be practical: a player might use a controller for movement and general play, then use the mouse for a precise menu selection. The game’s documented behavior concerns which method is active and which prompts are displayed; it does not require you to commit to one method for the entire session.

The game does not respond to the pad
- Confirm that the controller is an XInput device or that it appears in Rockstar’s DirectInput list. A generic USB pad may use DirectInput and may not have an official layout.
- Disconnect other controllers and virtual gamepad devices. Rockstar says only the first active XInput controller, ID 1, is used.
- Reconnect the intended pad, then restart the game so it becomes the first active device.
- Check whether the game’s help changes to controller button prompts after you press a button.
The wrong controller is selected
Turn off or disconnect additional XInput devices, wheels and other virtual controllers, then reconnect the desired pad first. The goal is to leave one intended XInput device active as ID 1. Recheck the prompts after restarting.

A DirectInput pad is detected but the buttons are wrong
Look up the device’s listed ID in Rockstar’s controller guidance and test the corresponding -joysticktype layout. The argument is a convenience workaround for an unsupported device, so remove it if the layout remains incorrect. There may be no guaranteed fix for an unlisted controller.

The prompts show keys while the controller is connected
Connecting a pad does not necessarily make it the most recently used method. Press a controller button or move a stick, then check the next help prompt. If keyboard input was the last activity, the game may continue showing keyboard prompts until controller input is used.
Steam configuration is confusing
Steam’s “Partial Controller Support” label should not be treated as full support for every device. Use Rockstar’s XInput guidance as the compatibility baseline. If a Steam-level remapping layer changes what the game receives, simplify the setup by testing the pad as a direct XInput device and checking the game’s own prompts.
Activation or online play fails
Controller settings cannot resolve an account or entitlement problem. Verify the Rockstar Games account login and internet connection required for activation, online play and periodic entitlement checks. If the requirements or launcher behavior have changed, consult Rockstar’s current support and requirements information.
Graphics and version context
Rockstar’s release-period PC announcement highlighted DirectX 11, tessellation and additional advanced graphics options. Those features describe the PC edition’s rendering capabilities; they are not prerequisites for choosing a controller or keyboard. Keep graphics troubleshooting separate from input troubleshooting: first establish that the game launches and receives the desired device, then adjust visual settings.
Max Payne 3 is an older release, but its requirements and account checks can still be affected by downloadable content and programming changes. Rockstar’s requirements page, updated March 21, 2024, is the dated reference for the figures above. Check the current support information if you are installing on a newer Windows build or using hardware outside the listed categories.
A reliable setup decision
Choose mouse and keyboard when you want the simplest hardware path or already prefer PC aiming. Choose an XInput pad when you want analog movement and have a compatible controller, keeping the ID 1 rule in mind. Use DirectInput only with the expectations Rockstar sets: listed devices receive default layouts, while the -joysticktype option may help an unsupported pad but is not guaranteed.
Whichever method you choose, verify the live prompts, keep the official PC Manual as the authority for exact keys, and remember that Max Payne 3 lets you change methods during play.
