Short answer: Maldhalla is scheduled for Steam on October 16, 2026, but its store listing currently says the game is not yet available. Steam also shows Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown, so there is no official Verified, Playable or Unsupported rating yet. When the game becomes installable, start with its native SteamOS/Linux build, the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 display target, and current SteamOS updates. Use a forced Proton version only if the native build fails or the Windows build is the one you need.

What Maldhalla’s current Steam Deck status means

Maldhalla is listed for Steam with an October 16, 2026 release date from eyejoker. At the time of writing, the product page still reports that it is not yet available. You cannot reliably install or test the released game on a Steam Deck until Steam makes the product downloadable.

The same listing reports Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown. “Unknown” is not a performance verdict. It means Valve has not published a Deck compatibility result for the title. Do not treat it as Verified, Playable or Unsupported, and do not infer a frame-rate target from the label.

Once the game is released, the most sensible first attempt is its listed native SteamOS/Linux build. The store page specifies SteamOS requirements, which indicates that a Linux path is intended. Proton remains a useful fallback for a Windows build or a native launch problem, but changing Proton versions is not automatically a performance upgrade.

Maldhalla’s published requirements

The Steam listing gives a small minimum specification and a higher recommended processor target. These figures describe the game’s stated PC requirements, not a tested Steam Deck result.

Component Minimum listed requirement Recommended listed requirement
Operating system SteamOS 3.0 or later SteamOS 3.0 or later
CPU architecture 64-bit CPU and operating system 64-bit CPU and operating system
Memory 2 GB RAM 2 GB RAM
Graphics Vulkan- or OpenGL-compatible graphics Vulkan- or OpenGL-compatible graphics
Storage 1 GB available space 1 GB available space
Processor Not separately stated in the listing Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, or better

The 1 GB figure is the game’s listed storage requirement. It does not include room for SteamOS updates, shader caches, save backups or other games. You do not need a dock, external charger or microSD card according to the published requirements; those are optional accessories rather than prerequisites.

Install and launch Maldhalla on Steam Deck

  1. Wait for the Steam release to become available. Open the game’s Steam page or search for Maldhalla in Gaming Mode. If Steam still says the product is unavailable, installation and compatibility testing are not yet possible.
  2. Update SteamOS and the Steam client. In Gaming Mode, open the Steam menu, choose Settings, then System, and apply any available system update. Let Steam finish updating the game after installation.
  3. Restart the Deck before troubleshooting. A restart clears temporary session problems and is Valve’s first-line advice after updates when stability or performance remains poor.
  4. Install the game normally. From the game page, choose Install, select the internal drive or an available storage location, and wait for the download and shader-processing steps to finish.
  5. Launch without changing advanced settings. Use the default graphics options first. This gives you a baseline and avoids attributing a later problem to several simultaneous changes.
  6. Confirm the display target. Keep the game at 1280×800 or 1280×720, the Deck’s default display resolutions, unless a specific problem calls for a lower setting.
  7. Play for a consistent test session. Check menus, text, controls and a representative gameplay segment rather than judging performance from the opening screen alone.

If the title does not appear in your library after release, verify that Steam is online, the purchase or license is present, and the client has completed its download queue. A missing listing before the stated release becomes available is not evidence of a Deck-specific fault.

Native SteamOS/Linux first, Proton when needed

Why start with the native build

Maldhalla’s listing includes a SteamOS + Linux target and names SteamOS 3.0 or later. That makes the native path the appropriate first choice: it avoids an additional Windows-compatibility layer and follows the platform the developer lists. Native does not guarantee a particular frame rate, battery life or absence of bugs; those results still depend on the final game build and Deck model.

How to force Proton for a Windows build

If Steam installs a Windows build, the native launch fails, or the game’s compatibility information points you toward Proton, select a compatibility tool per game:

  1. Open Library and highlight Maldhalla.
  2. Press the Menu button and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility section.
  4. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose an installed Proton version, close Properties, and launch the game.

There is no sourced Maldhalla-specific recommendation for a particular Proton release. Start with the current stable option offered by your Deck, then change it only when a launch, rendering or input problem gives you a reason. Record the version you tried so you can revert to the last working choice.

When switching back is sensible

Return to the native SteamOS/Linux path when it launches reliably and provides usable controls. Proton can solve a compatibility issue, but it can also introduce its own shader-compilation, middleware or input behavior. Treat it as a compatibility control, not as a universal FPS setting.

Use the Deck’s display correctly before lowering quality

Valve’s Deck guidance calls for support for the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, good default settings and legible text. Begin at the resolution the game selects for the Deck. If the interface is cropped, blurry or difficult to read, check the game’s own display menu and make sure it is using the panel’s native target rather than an arbitrary desktop resolution.

Do not lower resolution pre-emptively. First watch the frame-time graph and note whether controls feel delayed. If frame-time spikes or input latency appear during normal play, reduce one demanding option at a time, test the same scene again and keep the change only if it improves consistency. A lower resolution that makes menus or text unreadable is not an optimization for handheld play.

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

A controlled tuning order

  1. Leave the game’s default preset and native resolution unchanged.
  2. Test a repeatable area for several minutes, including movement, effects and menu transitions.
  3. Use the Deck performance overlay to observe frame-time behavior rather than relying only on a moving FPS number.
  4. If stutter is visible, lower the game’s most expensive graphics option by one step, if such an option exists.
  5. Retest before changing another setting.
  6. Stop when controls are responsive, text remains legible and frame-time spikes are reduced.

The available information does not identify Maldhalla’s individual graphics options, so there is no evidence-based “best preset” to copy. The correct setting is the one that improves a measured problem on your particular Deck without sacrificing readability or control response.

How to diagnose launch, stutter and control problems

The game will not start

  • Confirm that Steam now lists the product as available and that the download completed.
  • Install pending SteamOS, client and game updates.
  • Restart the Deck.
  • Try the native SteamOS/Linux build first.
  • If the installed build is Windows-based or the native path fails, force a Proton tool through Properties > Compatibility and test again.

If the problem persists after updates and a restart, Steam Support says you can opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether a recent platform change addresses it. Beta software can introduce changes of its own, so use it as a troubleshooting step rather than a guaranteed fix.

The game launches but stutters

  • Allow the first launch to finish shader processing and other post-install work.
  • Close downloads and other active tasks, then restart the game.
  • Check frame-time behavior with the performance overlay.
  • Test native and Proton paths separately instead of changing several settings at once.
  • Lower one graphics setting only when the frame-time graph or controls indicate a real problem.

Shader-compilation stutter, background downloads and a compatibility-layer change can look similar. A short repeatable test after each change helps identify which factor actually changed.

  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Controls or text feel wrong

  • Verify that the game is running at 1280×800 or 1280×720.
  • Check the game’s control and display menus before changing system-wide settings.
  • Compare native and Proton input behavior if both paths are available.
  • Keep the configuration that gives reliable controller recognition and readable text, even if another option reports a higher instantaneous FPS.

The Deck becomes unusually hot or battery drain is high

No Maldhalla-specific thermal or battery measurements are published. Do not treat a generic Deck estimate as a Maldhalla result. Note the Deck model, game build, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate limit and whether the game is native or running through Proton before drawing a conclusion. Without those details, battery comparisons are not meaningful.

What is currently known about performance

There is no sourced Maldhalla Steam Deck benchmark yet. That means there is no defensible FPS target, 1% low result, battery-life figure, thermal result or recommended graphics preset to promise. The game’s low listed memory and storage requirements also do not predict handheld performance; they describe minimum PC requirements, not frame-time behavior on a Deck.

When independent testing becomes available, useful comparisons should identify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact Steam Deck model and SteamOS version;
  • the Maldhalla build number;
  • native SteamOS/Linux versus the Proton version used;
  • average and 1% low FPS alongside frame-time consistency;
  • resolution, graphics settings and any frame-rate cap;
  • battery drain and temperature over the same test interval;
  • shader-compilation stutter;
  • controller and input behavior;
  • text legibility at 1280×800 and 1280×720; and
  • multiplayer or middleware features, if the game uses them.

Until those measurements exist, the honest optimization strategy is procedural: update, restart, use the native build, keep the default resolution, measure a repeatable scene and change one variable at a time.

Why Steam shows “Unknown” compatibility

Valve’s compatibility label is separate from the game’s own system requirements. A listing can name SteamOS, Vulkan or OpenGL and still show Unknown while Valve has not published a Deck assessment. The label may change after release or after Valve evaluates a later build, but its current value does not establish that the game works or fails on the handheld.

For now, plan around the information that is actually available: Maldhalla is scheduled for Steam, the store page is currently unavailable, native SteamOS/Linux requirements are listed, and no Deck-specific performance result has been established.

Practical checklist

  • Wait until Steam marks Maldhalla available.
  • Update SteamOS and the Steam client.
  • Install the game and let all downloads and shader processing finish.
  • Restart before diagnosing persistent issues.
  • Try the native SteamOS/Linux build first.
  • Use 1280×800 or 1280×720 as the initial display target.
  • Keep default settings until frame-time behavior shows a problem.
  • Force Proton per game only through Library > Properties > Compatibility when needed.
  • Change one setting at a time and record what improves or worsens the result.
  • Do not rely on an FPS, battery or thermal claim that does not identify the Deck model, build and settings.
