You install the current package for your operating system, then import game data from your own supported four-disc release. The project does not include the game. If you prefer emulation, Xenia is a separate Xbox 360 emulator, but its compatibility and save behavior must be checked for the current build. Neither option guarantees a flawless playthrough on every PC.
What “playing Lost Odyssey on PC” actually means
Lost Odyssey was released for Xbox 360. There is no established native, official Windows release in the information available for this guide. That leaves three practical routes:

- Lost Odyssey Recomp: an unofficial native port/recompilation project. Its README describes it as “A native port of Lost Odyssey for Xbox 360.”
- Xenia: an open-source Xbox 360 emulator that runs console software on a PC.
- Xbox backward compatibility: the game is identified as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, which is a console option rather than a PC method.
Recomp and Xenia are not interchangeable. Recomp converts the game into a native-PC application and has its own importer. Xenia recreates Xbox 360 hardware behavior and loads game data through an emulator. The installation, troubleshooting, and compatibility questions are therefore different.
Before you install: game files, editions and legal responsibility
Recomp’s download contains the application, not Lost Odyssey itself. You must supply game data from a copy you are entitled to use. The project documentation accepts several input forms: an extracted game folder or executable, an ISO image, or Games on Demand data. Do not download unauthorized game archives or use someone else’s disc image simply because it is easier.

The importer documentation identifies two supported four-disc sets:
| Supported set named by the project | Important restriction |
|---|---|
| Asian multilingual | Use discs from this set only; do not combine them with another edition. |
| USA/Europe | Use discs from this set only; do not combine them with another edition. |
Do not mix discs between the Asian multilingual and USA/Europe releases. Even if a disc appears to contain the same content, mismatched regional data can prevent importing or produce problems later. Keep the original discs or source files until you have launched the port and confirmed that your imported data works.
Check the current Recomp release and requirements
Recomp is an active project, so package names, supported operating systems and hardware requirements can change. Read the current release page and installation guide immediately before downloading. The project README specifically lists AVX support for Windows x64. Requirements for other platforms are separate and must be taken from the package documentation for that release.
| Item | What is established | What you must verify for your build |
|---|---|---|
| Windows CPU feature | The README specifies AVX for Windows x64. | Confirm that your processor and operating system meet the release’s current requirements. |
| Other operating systems | The project provides platform-specific installation directions. | Use the requirements and package instructions for that platform; a Windows assumption may be wrong. |
| Game data | A supported copy supplied by the player is required. | Confirm that your edition is Asian multilingual or USA/Europe and that all discs belong to the same set. |
| Controller | No controller is required by the Recomp instructions cited here. | Check the current release notes for input support if you plan to use a gamepad. |
Because no tested frame-rate, completion-rate or universal hardware matrix is established, treat the project as experimental software rather than a guaranteed replacement for the console version.
How to install Lost Odyssey Recomp
1. Download the project package
Use the project’s current release page, then choose the package for your operating system and architecture. Read the release notes and installation guide supplied with that build. Do not assume that an older tutorial’s file names, folders or prerequisites still apply.

- Massive environments brought to life by an advanced game engine, a truly huge scale of enemies and a rewards system which rewards players for assisting teammates and contributing to the team's success against them.
- An unbelievable variety of Vital Suits and new ways to use them. The new VS system will have a powerful impact on the way the player takes to the war zone in Lost Planet 2.
- 4-player co-op and split-screen co-op locally allowing you to team up to battle the giant Akrid. Teamwork is the player's key to victory as team members are dependent on each other to succeed and survive.
- Appearances by Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from the Gears of War games.
- RPG elements added to the game include character customization, experience points, evolution of the game based on players decisions and actions (single player).
2. Keep your game source organized
Prepare your legally obtained game data before opening the importer. If you have an extracted folder, keep the complete folder structure intact. If you have an ISO or Games on Demand data, leave the source in a location you can identify easily. Avoid renaming internal files or combining content from different regions.
3. Start the importer
Run the importer included with the Recomp package. When it asks for source data, select one of the formats described by the guide: the extracted game folder or executable, an ISO, or Games on Demand data. The exact controls can vary by release, so follow the labels shown by your build rather than instructions written for an older version.

Disc 1 is required to start the game. Point the importer to disc 1 and let the process finish before moving on. Keep the source available until the importer reports success; deleting or moving files during a partial import can force you to begin again.
5. Import the remaining discs and DLC
Import the other discs for the rest of the campaign, and add DLC when applicable to your edition. The project guide explains that, after all four discs are imported, disc changes are handled automatically by the port. Importing only disc 1 may let the program start but will not provide the complete multi-disc game.
6. Launch from the installed Recomp application
Once the importer has completed, start the application produced by the package. If the project provides a first-run configuration screen, use it to select display, audio and input settings. Make a small test save as soon as the opening section allows it, then close and relaunch to confirm that the save is being written and read correctly.

7. Preserve the source and imported data
Do not overwrite your original disc images or extracted files when experimenting with updates. Keep a backup of the Recomp output and your save directory before changing versions. A project update can alter import behavior or file locations, and a backup gives you a way to return to a known-working setup.

Understanding the disc workflow
Lost Odyssey is a four-disc game. The project’s guide requires disc 1 for initial startup, then recommends importing the remaining discs and DLC as applicable. After all four discs are imported, the guide describes automatic disc changes. That means you should not expect to swap physical media during normal play, but you do need to complete the import of every disc you intend to use.
If the importer accepts disc 1 but rejects another disc, stop rather than substituting a different regional copy. Verify that the rejected disc belongs to the same Asian multilingual or USA/Europe set as disc 1, and retry from an unmodified source. A mixed set is specifically warned against by the project documentation.
Common Recomp problems and fixes
The importer cannot find a required file
- Confirm that you selected the top-level extracted folder, the correct executable, the complete ISO, or the correct Games on Demand data rather than a partial subfolder.
- Check that the source was not interrupted during extraction.
- Move the source to a simple local path and retry if the current location has unusual permissions or removable-drive interruptions.
- Re-read the installation guide for your exact release; accepted formats can change.
Disc 1 works but a later disc fails
- Check the region and language set. All discs must come from one supported four-disc edition.
- Verify that the later disc is complete and readable before importing it again.
- Do not merge folders manually unless the current guide explicitly instructs you to do so.
The program will not start on Windows
- Confirm that you are using the Windows x64 package and that the processor supports AVX, as specified by the README.
- Install the prerequisites listed in the current release documentation rather than relying on a generic runtime bundle.
- Check whether your antivirus or operating-system security feature quarantined a project file, and restore it only if you trust the package source.
- If the release has separate builds, make sure you did not launch a package for a different architecture.
The game crashes or behaves incorrectly
Record the Recomp version, operating system, imported edition and the point at which the problem occurs. Test with a clean copy of the imported data and temporarily remove optional modifications. Then consult the project’s current issue reports or release notes. The available project documentation does not promise a complete, error-free playthrough on every computer, so a reproducible problem may be a project limitation rather than a missing setting.
A save is missing after an update
Restore the save backup you made before changing versions and check the current release’s save-location notes. Do not delete the old installation until you have confirmed that the new build can read your saves. If a project update changes the save path or format, the release notes should be your authority.

Xenia: the separate emulator route
Xenia describes itself as “an open source research project for emulating Xbox 360 games on modern PCs.” It is not the Recomp port. Xenia’s official FAQ directs users to its Quickstart for current setup instructions and system requirements, and to a compatibility tracker for game-specific status.
How to approach a Xenia setup
- Download Xenia from its official project distribution and read the current Quickstart for your operating system.
- Review the stated system requirements before changing emulator settings.
- Prepare your own game dump using the Quickstart’s instructions. The FAQ is the appropriate place to confirm supported formats and the project’s current dumping guidance.
- Check the live compatibility tracker for Lost Odyssey before committing to a long playthrough. Do not treat a report for one Xenia build, graphics backend or computer as a guarantee for yours.
- Start with default settings, load the game and test a save early. Xenia warns that saves are broken in some games, so make separate backups of important saves.
Controller support in Xenia
Xenia supports XInput controllers by default, including Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers. A controller is optional rather than a requirement for this article, and no particular current retail model has been tested or established as necessary. If your gamepad is not recognized, confirm that the operating system sees it as an XInput device and follow the emulator’s current input instructions.
Why Xenia may still be useful
Emulation can be the more familiar choice for readers who already use Xenia for other Xbox 360 titles or who want to remain close to the original console environment. Its trade-off is that behavior depends on emulator development, game-specific compatibility and save support. For a long role-playing game, check recent reports and maintain independent save backups instead of assuming that reaching the title screen proves full compatibility.
Recomp or Xenia? A practical comparison
| Decision point | Lost Odyssey Recomp | Xenia |
|---|---|---|
| Technical approach | Unofficial native port/recompilation. | Xbox 360 emulation. |
| Required game data | Your own supported four-disc game data; the download does not include the game. | Your own game dump, prepared according to the current Quickstart. |
| Edition guidance | Asian multilingual and USA/Europe four-disc sets are named; do not mix them. | Use the emulator’s current game-dump and compatibility guidance. |
| Initial disc requirement | Disc 1 is required to start; import the other discs and applicable DLC for the full game. | Follow the emulator’s current handling of the game dump. |
| Compatibility check | Read the current project release notes and issue reports. | Check Xenia’s live compatibility tracker for Lost Odyssey. |
| Save risk | Back up saves before changing Recomp versions or locations. | The FAQ warns that some games have save problems; make separate backups. |
| Best fit | Readers who specifically want a native unofficial PC port and can provide a supported edition. | Readers comfortable with Xbox 360 emulation and checking game-specific status. |
What the unofficial port does not guarantee
No published statistic in the available project material establishes a universal frame rate, completion percentage, hardware compatibility rate or guaranteed full-game stability. Performance depends on the release, operating system and computer. A successful import is not proof that every area, cutscene, save operation or disc transition will work identically on every system.
Likewise, the existence of backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles does not establish a native Windows version or current digital-store availability. Store listings and regional availability can change, so check the current console storefront separately if that route matters to you.
Recommended preparation checklist
- Confirm your CPU supports AVX if you are using the Windows x64 Recomp package.
- Read the current release notes and platform-specific installation guide.
- Use an Asian multilingual or USA/Europe four-disc set supported by the project.
- Keep every disc from the same edition; never mix regions.
- Prepare your own extracted folder, executable, ISO or Games on Demand data.
- Import disc 1 first, then the other discs and applicable DLC.
- Retain untouched source files until the game launches and a test save reloads.
- Back up saves before installing updates or changing emulator versions.
- For Xenia, read the Quickstart and check the current Lost Odyssey compatibility reports.
- Use an XInput controller only if you want one; it is not a stated prerequisite.
Which route should you choose?
Choose Recomp when your priority is a native-PC implementation and you have one of the supported four-disc editions. It is the clearest answer to “using an unofficial port,” but it requires careful importing and acceptance that the project is still subject to version-specific issues.
Choose Xenia when you specifically want Xbox 360 emulation, are willing to consult current compatibility information and will protect your saves. If neither PC route is reliable on your hardware, an Xbox One or Xbox Series console with backward compatibility remains a separate option.
