To play Left 4 Dead 2 over a local network, connect every PC to the same router or party LAN, enable the developer console, and have the host start a map with the map command. Players on that network join with the host computer’s internal LAN IP. The game does not provide a menu button for creating a local server, so the console is the normal route.

What you need before starting
A reliable LAN session needs one PC to act as the host and one or more other PCs to act as clients. All machines must be connected to the same local network. A wired Ethernet connection is usually the simplest choice for a party setup, but the players can also use the same Wi-Fi network if the router permits devices to communicate with one another.

- One copy of the game running on each participating PC.
- A common local network. Connect everyone to the same home router, wireless network, or unmanaged switch connected to that router.
- A host PC that remains in the game. A listen server runs inside the host’s game process, so the session ends when that process closes or the host leaves.
- The host’s internal LAN IP address. Players behind the same router should use this private address rather than the host’s public Internet address.
An optional Cat6 Ethernet cable can reduce wireless interference and make a temporary party network easier to troubleshoot, but it is not required for LAN play.
How Left 4 Dead 2 LAN hosting works
Valve states that “Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 do not have a menu option to create a local server.” Instead of choosing a local-server item from the menus, the host opens the developer console and launches a map directly. The console command creates a listen server from the running game.
#1 Best Overall
- On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
- Left 4 Dead 2 features quality co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
- Updated “AI Director 2.0" technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
- Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
- The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.
The basic sequence is:
- Put every PC on the same LAN.
- Enable and open the developer console on the host.
- Use
maps *if you need to see available map files. - Start the desired map with
map mapname, such asmap c1m1_hotel. - Give the other players the host’s internal LAN IP.
- Have clients join through the console with
connect <host-LAN-IP>, or use the game’s available LAN discovery when it appears.
The map command starts the level directly. It is not the same as opening a normal campaign lobby first, so choose the correct map file before everyone joins.
Step 1: Put every computer on the same LAN
Use one router or switch
Connect all PCs to the same home router, party router, or Ethernet switch. A mixed arrangement is fine when the wired and wireless devices are attached to the same local network. If one computer is connected to a guest Wi-Fi network and another is on the main network, the router may isolate them even though both connections have Internet access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check that devices are in the same subnet
Compare the network details shown by each operating system. The host and clients should be on the same local subnet, not merely connected to the same Internet service. Subnet differences are a common reason a server does not appear in LAN discovery or rejects a direct connection.
Avoid client isolation
Some routers have settings named client isolation, AP isolation, guest isolation, or a similar term. These settings intentionally prevent wireless devices from talking to one another. If players can browse the web but cannot see the host, check whether the router’s guest network or isolation feature is enabled. Turn it off for the gaming network, or move every PC to a network that permits local-device communication.
Choose wired or wireless deliberately
Ethernet avoids radio congestion and makes the physical topology easy to understand. Wi-Fi is valid when all players are on the same non-isolated network and the signal is stable. A Cat6 cable is an optional way to connect a PC directly to the router or switch; it is not a special requirement imposed by the game.
Step 2: Enable the developer console on the host
- Start Left 4 Dead 2 on the computer that will host.
- Open Options.
- Select Keyboard/Mouse.
- Set Allow Developer Console to Enabled.
- Apply the setting and return to the game.
- Open the developer console using the console key assigned by the game and your keyboard layout.
If the console does not open, return to Options > Keyboard/Mouse and confirm that Allow Developer Console is still enabled. The key used to open the console can vary with keyboard layout, so use the key shown or configured on that PC rather than assuming every keyboard uses the same physical key.

Step 3: Start a LAN map from the console
List map files when you are unsure of the name
Enter:
maps *
This asks the game to list map files it knows about. Use the exact file name from that list when starting a level. This is safer than guessing a spelling or punctuation pattern.
Launch the map
Enter:
map mapname
For example:
map c1m1_hotel
c1m1_hotel is an example of the command format. If you want a different chapter, replace it with the desired map file reported by maps *. Wait for the host to finish loading the level before asking clients to connect. The host must remain in this running map for the listen server to be available.
Confirm the host is ready
The host should be able to move around in the level before clients attempt to join. If the map fails to load, check the map name and try the command again. Starting a second map replaces the current map and can disconnect players who are already loading into the first one.
Step 4: Find and share the host’s internal IP
On the host PC, open the operating system’s network details and identify the address assigned on the local network. This is the internal LAN IP, not the public address shown by an Internet speed-test site or the router’s external status page.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Give that internal address to the other players through your party’s normal private channel. Players connected behind the same router should use the internal address because the traffic stays inside the LAN. Using the public address for a same-router session can send the connection toward the router’s Internet-facing side, where it may be blocked or require port-forwarding that a simple LAN game does not need.
Use the address exactly as displayed. If the host reconnects to Wi-Fi, changes networks, or receives a new DHCP lease, the internal IP can change; provide the current value rather than reusing an old one.

Step 5: Join the host
Direct console connection
On a client PC, enable and open the developer console if it is not already available. Enter:
connect <host-LAN-IP>
Replace <host-LAN-IP> with the host’s current internal address. For example, if the host’s address shown in its network settings is 192.168.1.25, the command would be:
connect 192.168.1.25
Do not type the angle brackets; they indicate a value you must replace. A successful connection takes the client to the map running on the host.
LAN discovery
Depending on the game state and network configuration, the host may appear through the game’s LAN server list or discovery interface. Discovery is convenient, but direct connection is more useful when the list is empty or slow to update. Both methods still require the PCs to be on a network that allows local traffic.
When a client disconnects during loading
Have the client retry only after the host is fully in the map. If the host changed maps, use the newly reported address and try again. Repeated failures should be investigated as a network, firewall, or subnet problem rather than solved by repeatedly changing map commands.
Listen server versus dedicated server
There are two practical ways to host a local session. The console method creates a listen server in the host’s game process. A dedicated server runs as a separate server process and can remain online without a player actively occupying the host game.

| Hosting method | Setup effort | Lifetime | How players join | Network scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listen server from the game console | Low: enable the console and run map mapname |
Ends when the host’s game process exits or the host leaves | LAN discovery or connect <host-LAN-IP> |
Same-LAN players use the host’s internal IP |
| Dedicated server | Higher: install and operate a separate server process | Can continue independently of a player’s game session | LAN discovery or direct connect <ip:port> |
Can serve a LAN; Internet access requires deliberate server-mode and network configuration |
Use the listen-server approach for a quick session where one person is happy to host. Choose a dedicated process when the host needs to leave the game, when the group wants a persistent server, or when a separate machine is available to manage the session.
Joining a dedicated server
The direct connection format for a dedicated server is:
connect <ip:port>
Replace the placeholder with the server’s address and listening port. Dedicated-server documentation also describes LAN discovery. Port publishing details depend on the server implementation. For example, a container-based setup may publish both TCP and UDP for the game port, but that example should not be treated as a universal requirement for every listen-server or dedicated-server arrangement.
Understanding the “LAN servers are restricted to local clients (Class C)” message
This message indicates that the server is operating in LAN mode while the attempted client is not being recognized as a permitted local client. First verify the physical and logical network: both machines should be attached to the same router or switch, should not be separated by guest-network isolation, and should have addresses in the same subnet.
Valve documents sv_lan 0 for enabling Internet-server access. That setting is for intentionally allowing connections beyond the local network; it is not a substitute for putting LAN players on the same network. For a true same-LAN game, keep the players on the same local network and use the host’s internal IP. Do not expose a server to the Internet merely to work around a local-address mistake.
Why the LAN server does not appear
Verify the host is still running a map
A listen server exists only while the host’s game process is active in a loaded map. If the host is at a menu, the game has crashed, or the host closed the process, there is nothing for clients to discover. Restart the map with the console and wait until the host is fully loaded.

Check the subnet, not just the Internet connection
Two PCs can both have Internet access while remaining unable to communicate locally. Compare their network details and move them to the same non-isolated network if the subnet differs. A guest Wi-Fi network is a frequent source of this mismatch.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Inspect local firewall permissions
A firewall on the host or client can block local game traffic. Allow the game or server process to communicate on the trusted private network according to the operating system’s firewall controls. There is no single universal firewall rule that applies to every Windows configuration, router, or server implementation, so avoid copying an unrelated port list without knowing which hosting method you are using.
Use direct IP when discovery is unreliable
If the server list is empty but the network checks pass, ask the host for the current internal IP and use connect <host-LAN-IP>. Discovery and direct connection use the same underlying LAN relationship; direct entry simply avoids relying on the list refreshing correctly.
Confirm the address has not changed
Routers commonly assign local addresses dynamically. A reconnect, reboot, or move between wired and wireless networking can give the host a different internal IP. Recheck the host’s network details immediately before joining and distribute the current address.
When the host leaves
A listen server is tied to the host’s game process. If that player quits, crashes, changes session, or loses the network connection, the other players lose that server. Reassigning the host means starting a new map from another player’s console and sharing that player’s internal IP.
A dedicated server avoids this particular limitation because the server process can continue separately. The group still needs a machine that remains powered on and reachable, and clients must use the dedicated server’s LAN discovery entry or its direct connect <ip:port> address.
Internet play is a different configuration
A same-LAN game and an Internet-accessible server have different network boundaries. Local players should connect to the host’s internal address. Players outside the LAN cannot normally use that private address, because it is meaningful only inside the local network.
sv_lan 0 is Valve’s documented command for enabling Internet-server access. Using it changes the intended scope of the server; it does not make a disconnected Wi-Fi client part of the LAN. Internet hosting may also require router and firewall configuration, and exposing a game service creates security and reliability considerations that do not arise when every player is on the same trusted LAN. If the goal is only a party session in one location, keep the setup local instead of opening the server unnecessarily.
A repeatable party-night procedure
- Choose the host and connect all PCs to one router or switch.
- Keep everyone off guest Wi-Fi or any network with client isolation.
- On the host, open Options > Keyboard/Mouse and enable Allow Developer Console.
- Open the console and run
maps *if you need to identify the desired map. - Run
map mapname, using the exact map file;map c1m1_hoteldemonstrates the format. - Wait for the host to finish loading and then read the host’s current internal LAN IP from its network settings.
- Give that address to the clients.
- Have each client run
connect <host-LAN-IP>if the host is not visible through LAN discovery. - If a client cannot connect, check subnet membership, isolation, firewall permissions, the host’s running map, and whether the IP changed.
- If the host must leave without ending the session, use a separately operated dedicated server and provide its
ip:portaddress.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- No console: enable Allow Developer Console under Options > Keyboard/Mouse, then use the configured console key.
- Map command fails: run
maps *and copy an exact map file name intomap mapname. - Server is missing: ensure the host is fully loaded into the map and still running the game.
- Direct connection fails: use the host’s current internal LAN IP, not its public address.
- “Restricted to local clients (Class C)” appears: verify the clients are genuinely on the same subnet; reserve
sv_lan 0for intentional Internet-server access. - Clients connect and then drop: inspect local firewall permissions and check whether the host changed maps or lost its network connection.
- Host quits: restart from another player or move the session to a dedicated server.
- Dedicated connection syntax: use
connect <ip:port>with the server’s actual address and port.
Bottom line for a same-room game
The shortest reliable setup is one shared, non-isolated LAN; the developer console enabled on the host; a map started with map mapname; and clients connecting to the host’s internal IP. A listen server is quick but follows the host’s game process. A dedicated server takes more setup and can persist independently. Keep sv_lan 0 for cases where you intentionally need Internet access, not as a fix for a local-network connection problem.
