There are two different ways to experience these handheld Kingdom Hearts releases today. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, originally released on PSP, is available as the playable Birth by Sleep Final Mix in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX. The Nintendo DS titles Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re:coded are included in current HD collections as remastered story cinematics, not as interactive remakes. To play their original DS gameplay, you need the original software and compatible Nintendo hardware.
A related handheld-era title, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, began on Nintendo 3DS and has a separate HD version. It is useful for deciding what to buy, but it is not a PSP or DS game.

What is actually playable today?
The most important distinction is whether a collection contains a complete game or a video presentation of its story. Square Enix and Nintendo use different labels for the two formats, so check the product contents rather than assuming every numbered entry is playable.

Pick the route that matches your goal
You want to play the PSP game, not merely see its story
Choose Birth by Sleep Final Mix in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX. The collection listing identifies this as the updated version of the PSP-origin title and treats it as a game rather than a film compilation. You do not need to locate a PSP or a PSP disc to use this route.
You want the DS stories with minimal hardware hunting
Use the HD collection that contains the 358/2 Days and Re:coded cinematic presentations. This gives you the story scenes in a modern format, but it does not recreate the original DS controls, menus or interactive sections. Think of the entries as edited, high-definition story material inside the collection.
You want the original DS gameplay
Look for original copies of the DS releases and a Nintendo system that is explicitly compatible with the cartridge you buy. The official collections do not supply that gameplay. Because second-hand stock, cartridge condition and regional compatibility vary, verify those details with the seller at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou are also deciding whether to include Dream Drop Distance
Dream Drop Distance is from Nintendo 3DS, not PSP or DS. Its HD version is a separate option. Include it only if you also want that 3DS chapter; do not buy it expecting it to replace either DS game.
How to play Birth by Sleep Final Mix in an HD collection
This is the straightforward modern route for the PSP-origin game.
- Identify the collection and edition. Look for KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX and confirm that the contents specifically name Birth by Sleep Final Mix. A listing that mentions only “Kingdom Hearts” without a contents list is not enough to establish which version you are buying.
- Check the platform and territory. Confirm that the edition is sold for your console and region. Product names can be similar across territories, while release formats and included discs or downloads may differ.
- Install or insert the collection. Follow your platform’s normal installation process. If you bought a physical package, check whether the listing describes one disc, multiple discs or a download component before starting.
- Launch the collection and choose the Birth by Sleep entry. Use the title selection screen to open Birth by Sleep Final Mix, rather than one of the video-only entries. The “Final Mix” wording is the identifier for the updated version included in this collection.
- Set up controls and display options. Use the console’s controller settings and display preferences for comfort. The HD release is designed for the platform on which you run the collection; you do not need to reproduce the PSP’s original screen or control layout.
- Keep the purchase record and edition name. If you later reinstall the game or contact support, the exact collection title and platform edition are more useful than a generic reference to “the PSP Kingdom Hearts game.”
The official listing establishes the inclusion of Birth by Sleep Final Mix; it does not establish a single worldwide price, a permanent stock level or identical packaging in every territory. Treat those as purchase-time checks.

How the DS games are presented in modern collections
358/2 Days: a cinematic story route
In the HD collections, 358/2 Days appears as an HD cutscene compilation. Square Enix’s physical collection announcement describes the material as HD-remastered cinematics. That means you can follow the principal story scenes in a modern collection, but the original DS missions and other interactive portions are not available as a playable campaign there.
For a story-focused session, select the 358/2 Days video entry from the collection and use the console’s ordinary playback controls. If you need to stop partway through, note your position with the collection’s own playback or save features; a cinematic presentation does not behave like a separate game save unless the edition specifically provides one.
Re:coded: another video compilation, not a DS remake
Re:coded is handled in the same way. Official collection materials identify an HD cutscene compilation or HD-remastered cinematics rather than a playable remake. You receive the story presentation, not the DS version’s interactive progression.
When comparing editions, read the contents panel for the words “cutscene compilation” or “remastered cinematics.” Those terms tell you that the DS experience has been adapted for viewing. A package can therefore contain all of the named Kingdom Hearts stories while still containing only one playable handheld game: Birth by Sleep Final Mix.
Playing the original DS versions
If interactive DS gameplay is the requirement, the original releases remain the relevant format. The practical process is different from buying an HD collection because you must validate both the software and the hardware.
- Decide which original title you need. 358/2 Days and Re:coded are separate DS releases. Check the cartridge label and the seller’s photographs rather than assuming one includes the other.
- Confirm hardware compatibility before paying. Ask which Nintendo system the cartridge is intended for and whether that specific model reads the game. Do not infer compatibility from a vague “Nintendo” label on a listing.
- Check territory and language information. A used cartridge may be from a different regional market. Verify that its region and language meet your needs and that the seller accepts returns if the listing is inaccurate.
- Inspect the cartridge and contacts. Used stock can have worn labels, damaged shells or dirty contacts. Request clear photographs and, where possible, confirmation that the cartridge boots and saves.
- Use a compatible charger and functioning system. Original handheld hardware may be old. Confirm that the console powers on, reads cartridges and retains saves before treating it as a reliable long-term setup.
- Back up your expectations, not just your save. Original DS software will present its original interface and controls. An HD collection cannot be used as a save-transfer substitute for that cartridge.
Current retailer stock and hardware condition were not established in the official materials. Availability can therefore differ sharply by country and by week; check live listings when you are ready to buy.
The physical All-In-One Package
Square Enix Europe announced a physical KINGDOM HEARTS All-In-One Package for PS4 retailers on 17 April 2025. Its contents are relevant if you want one physical purchase covering the major HD collections, including Birth by Sleep Final Mix and the cinematic adaptations of the two DS games.
The key qualification is the same one that applies to the digital collections: the package gives you the DS stories as cinematics, not as original DS gameplay. It is therefore a practical choice for a modern console library and a poor substitute if your priority is operating the DS versions yourself.
- Before ordering: confirm that the product is the European PS4 edition announced by Square Enix and that your console can use that regional release.
- Check the contents list: make sure it names the HD collections and the specific entries you expect.
- Check physical format: verify whether the listing is a complete retail package, a new copy or a used copy, and whether any download requirement is stated.
- Check current status: the announcement date does not guarantee that every retailer still has stock.
Where Dream Drop Distance fits
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is often mentioned alongside these games because it was another handheld release, but its original platform was Nintendo 3DS. Square Enix describes Dream Drop Distance HD as the PS4 HD remake of the 3DS title. It belongs to the KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection rather than the DS cinematic packages.
Platform details matter here. Square Enix’s product information identifies the Nintendo Switch edition as a cloud version. A cloud edition depends on the service conditions stated for your territory and on a sufficiently stable internet connection, so read the platform description instead of assuming it is a native cartridge or download.
If your aim is specifically the PSP and DS releases, treat Dream Drop Distance HD as optional. It adds a 3DS-origin game; it does not turn either DS cinematic compilation into a playable remake.
Terminology that prevents an expensive mistake
| Label | What it tells you | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Final Mix | An updated version of the game, here referring to the playable Birth by Sleep Final Mix. | It does not mean every other title in the same package is playable. |
| HD cutscene compilation | Story scenes have been assembled and presented in high definition. | It does not include the original game’s interactive missions or controls. |
| HD-remastered cinematics | Square Enix’s description for the remastered story-video material in the physical package announcement. | It is not a label for a full remake. |
| HD remake | A playable modernized version, as Square Enix describes Dream Drop Distance HD. | It does not identify the original handheld as PSP or DS. |
| Cloud version | The game is delivered through a streaming service on the listed platform. | It does not guarantee offline play or a native local installation. |
A purchase checklist for 2026
- Write down your required experience: playable game, story-only viewing, or original handheld controls.
- Match the title to the format: Birth by Sleep Final Mix is the playable PSP-origin option; the DS entries use cinematic presentations in the HD collections.
- Verify platform and region: read the complete product description, not only the cover image.
- For original DS copies: confirm cartridge identity, hardware compatibility, territory, condition and return terms.
- For the All-In-One Package: confirm the European PS4 edition and its current stock status.
- For Dream Drop Distance: check whether your chosen Switch listing is the cloud version and whether that suits your connection and offline needs.
- Ignore price claims that are not current: the official materials establish contents and formats, not a universal price or permanent availability.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a collection expecting three playable handheld games
Read the contents line by line. One playable entry and two cinematic entries can appear together under a single collection name.

Confusing a story compilation with a remake
“Cinematics” and “cutscene compilation” describe video material. Look for an explicit playable-game or remake designation before assuming you can control the character.

Forgetting that original hardware is part of the DS route
A DS cartridge alone is not a complete modern-console solution. You also need a working, compatible Nintendo system and a cartridge in usable condition.
A simple access plan
- Start with the format decision. If you want to play, choose the playable HD entry or locate original DS hardware and software. If you want story access, the cinematic collections are sufficient for the two DS titles.
- Use the HD collection for the PSP-origin game. Select Birth by Sleep Final Mix in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX.
- Add the DS cinematic entries if viewing is enough. Use the collection’s 358/2 Days and Re:coded presentations as story material rather than expecting interactive chapters.
- Choose original DS copies only when gameplay is essential. Check the cartridge, hardware, region and condition together.
- Consider the separate 3DS route. Add Dream Drop Distance HD only if you also want that game and have confirmed the platform format, including the Switch cloud designation.
That approach keeps the three handheld questions separate: the PSP game has a playable HD version; the DS games have official HD story presentations; and original DS gameplay requires original software and compatible hardware.
