Everyone else uses a phone, tablet, or computer browser to open jackbox.tv, enter the room code shown on the TV, and submit answers from that device. You do not need a separate gamepad for normal player inputs, and only one person in the group needs to own the game.
The setup in one minute
Jackbox uses a two-screen arrangement. The host device runs the game and sends the shared game state to the television. Each player opens a browser controller on a separate internet-capable device. The TV shows prompts, drawings, timers, scores, and the lobby; the private or interactive work happens on each player’s phone.

- Host: one person owns and launches a Jackbox Party Pack on a supported device.
- Display: the host device is connected to a TV, or its game window is otherwise visible to the whole group.
- Controllers: players use phones, tablets, laptops, or other devices with a compatible web browser.
- Join page: every player goes to jackbox.tv.
- Room code: players type the short code displayed in the game’s lobby, then choose a display name.
When the names appear in the lobby, the host starts the game from the host screen. The arrangement works in the same room and, with screen sharing, for remote groups.
What you need before starting
A host copy of a Party Pack
Jackbox’s official guidance says only one person in the group needs to own a Jackbox product to host a game. The other players join that host’s session through their browsers; they do not each buy the pack.

The host must install the specific Party Pack on a supported platform and be able to launch the game. Storefront, edition, region, and current availability vary, so verify the exact platform edition before purchasing. A Nintendo Switch edition is explicitly listed with TV mode, making the Switch a straightforward living-room host. A computer can fill the same role when the purchased pack runs on that computer and the computer is connected to the TV.
A way to show the host screen
Connect the host device to the television using the platform’s normal display connection. On a Switch, select TV mode and place the console in its dock. On a computer, connect an HDMI display output, use a compatible adapter if necessary, and select the TV as the display or mirror target. The important requirement is not a particular cable; it is that everyone can read the lobby, room code, prompts, and results.
One browser device per player
Each player needs a phone, tablet, computer, or another internet-capable device with a web browser. Nintendo describes controller devices as browsers that support WebSockets and HTML5. Current phones normally meet that requirement, but an old browser, restricted work device, or unstable connection can prevent joining or submitting responses.

A phone can be on Wi-Fi or cellular data, but it must be able to reach the controller site and maintain the connection while the game is running.

How to start a local game on the TV
- Install and launch the pack on the host device. Use the account or storefront associated with the owner’s purchase, then open the desired Party Pack.
- Connect the host to the TV. Switch the television to the correct HDMI input, or choose the TV display in the computer’s display settings. Confirm that the game screen is readable from the seating area.
- Choose a game from the pack. The pack opens that game’s lobby. Keep the host device’s own controller, keyboard, or pointing device available for navigating menus.
- Read the room code on the TV. The code is the join credential for this session. It changes when a new lobby is created, so use the code currently visible on the screen.
- Open the controller site. On each phone or other device, open a browser and enter jackbox.tv.
- Enter the code and a display name. Type the room code exactly as shown, then choose the name that will identify the player in the lobby and game.
- Check the lobby. The host screen lists players as they arrive. Have anyone missing recheck the web address, code, spelling, and connection before starting.
- Start the game from the host screen. The host uses the platform controller or keyboard to select the start option. Player phones then change to the controls required by that game.
Some games also show a QR code. In Party Pack 9, Jackbox documents scanning that code with a phone camera to open Jackbox.tv with the room code entered. QR sign-in depends on the game and pack, so the displayed room code remains the general method and the fallback when no QR code appears.
What the phone controller actually does
The phone is not running the game. It is a browser-based input panel linked to the host session. Depending on the game, it can provide fields and buttons for:
- typing an answer or entering a name;
- drawing with touch controls;
- voting for another player’s response;
- choosing from several options;
- confirming or submitting an action before a timer expires.
The television remains the shared reference point. It displays the prompt, public answers, drawings, countdown, and score changes, while a player’s phone may show controls or information intended only for that player. Keep the phone awake and avoid switching away from the browser during a timed round.
A dedicated console controller is therefore unnecessary for ordinary player actions. The host is different: the host still needs whatever input the platform requires to open menus, select a pack, choose a game, and start the round. On a computer, that may be a keyboard and mouse; on a console, it is the platform’s normal controller.

Choosing the host platform and TV arrangement
| Host arrangement | What appears on the TV | What players use | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch in TV mode | The Switch game screen, including the lobby and room code | A phone, tablet, or computer browser at jackbox.tv | The Nintendo listing explicitly describes entering the on-screen room code at jackbox.tv. |
| Computer connected to the TV | The computer’s Jackbox window or mirrored desktop | A phone, tablet, or computer browser at jackbox.tv | The purchased Party Pack must run on that computer, and the TV must show the game window clearly. |
The host platform determines how you launch and control the game; it does not change the basic phone workflow. Check the exact Party Pack edition, storefront, regional availability, and supported operating platform before buying, because a pack owned on one platform does not automatically mean you own the same edition everywhere else.
Player counts and picking a game
Player limits belong to individual games, not just to the Party Pack label. Read the player range shown for the particular game before inviting a large group. For examples documented in Nintendo’s 2016 listing, Drawful supports 3–8 players and Lie Swatter supports 1–100 players. Those figures describe the games in that listed edition; they should not be treated as a complete or current player-count table for every Party Pack.
For a small gathering, choose a game whose minimum is no greater than the number of people ready to play. For a large event, use a game that explicitly supports the expected count, and remember that a game’s maximum may include audience participation or other special roles depending on the title. The lobby is the practical final check: if the player list cannot fit the group, select another game in the pack rather than trying to bypass the limit.

Remote play uses the same controller workflow, with one extra requirement: everyone must be able to see the host’s game screen. The host runs the Party Pack locally, then shares that screen through a video-chat or streaming service. Jackbox lists Discord, Google Meet, Skype, and FaceTime as workable examples.

- Set up the host game locally. Launch the pack and reach the lobby so the room code is visible.
- Start the screen share. Share the game window or the display containing the game. Make sure remote players can read small text and timers; sharing a window is preferable when the service offers that option.
- Send the call or stream details. Remote players join the same voice or video session used to watch the host screen.
- Have every remote player open jackbox.tv separately. They should use a phone, computer, or other internet-capable device for their private controller page, even if they are watching the game on a computer.
- Enter the room code and display name. The code comes from the shared host screen. Each person joins independently and waits for their name to appear in the lobby.
- Start only after the lobby is complete. The host begins from the host device, while players submit answers through their own browsers.
Remote play has two separate connections to troubleshoot: the screen-sharing call and each player’s controller connection. A player may be able to hear the call but still fail to join jackbox.tv, or see the game while their controller page has disconnected. Treat those as separate problems rather than restarting the entire game immediately.
Accounts, purchases, and subscriptions
Jackbox support says a Jackbox account is not required for purchased games, and those purchases do not carry recurring charges. Players identify themselves in the lobby with a display name rather than by signing into a Jackbox account. The support documentation also says player history is stored through cookies on the controller device, so clearing browser cookies or changing devices can remove that local history without affecting the host’s purchase.
A subscription service that offers access to games, such as Amazon Luna, is a separate access model. Do not confuse that service’s subscription requirements with the normal setup for a Party Pack purchased for the host platform. For an ordinary purchased copy, the key requirement is ownership on the host device, not a paid account for every participant.
Troubleshooting: the fastest fixes
The room code is rejected
- Read the code from the current lobby screen; an old code from a previous session will not work.
- Check confusing characters and retype the code rather than relying on autofill.
- Confirm that the browser address is jackbox.tv, not a search result or an unrelated page.
- Refresh the controller page and re-enter the code if the session was left open for several minutes.
A player joins but does not appear on the TV
- Wait briefly for the lobby to update, then refresh the player’s controller page.
- Check that the player completed both the room-code step and the display-name step.
- Try another browser or device if the current browser blocks WebSockets, HTML5 features, or site scripts.
- Test the connection by opening another ordinary website. A device that is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet access cannot reach the controller session.
The phone shows a blank or frozen controller
- Keep the browser tab open and prevent the phone from locking during a round.
- Reload the page and rejoin with the code if the controller lost its session.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data when one connection is unstable.
- Update the browser or use a different current browser that supports WebSockets and HTML5.
The host can play but cannot navigate menus
Phone controllers do not replace the host’s platform input. Connect or wake the Switch controller, or use the computer keyboard and mouse, then select the Party Pack and game from the host device. Once the game begins, players can return to their phones for normal inputs.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Remote players cannot read the shared screen
- Share the game window at its largest practical size instead of a small preview.
- Ask the host to increase the game’s display resolution or move the TV output closer to the native resolution when available.
- Use voice chat separately if screen-sharing audio or video is unreliable; the controller page still needs its own internet connection.
- Have remote players pause before submitting if the stream is delayed, because the host’s timer may finish before a delayed image reaches them.
Privacy and practical party etiquette
Use display names that let the host identify the right people without revealing information you would not want visible to everyone in the room or call. The TV can show submitted answers, drawings, votes, and scores to the group, so do not enter passwords, private contact details, or other sensitive information into a game prompt.
For a local party, place phones where players can type without blocking the TV. For remote play, ask everyone to mute notification previews and avoid sharing a personal desktop when a window-only screen share is available. The host should announce when a round has started and when a timer is nearly finished, especially if any participant is watching through a delayed stream.
Pre-game checklist
- One person owns and has installed the correct Party Pack on the host device.
- The host device is connected to the TV, or its screen is ready to share remotely.
- The TV input and game window are visible and legible.
- The host has the platform controller, keyboard, or mouse needed for menus.
- Every player has a charged internet-capable device and a compatible browser.
- Everyone knows to open jackbox.tv, enter the room code, and choose a display name.
- The selected game can accommodate the expected number of players.
- Remote players have joined the screen-sharing call before the host starts.
What to remember
Jackbox is designed so the host’s TV or shared screen carries the game while browsers carry player input. Buy or install one host copy, connect that host to the TV, and have every participant join at jackbox.tv with the code shown in the lobby. Phones handle typing, drawing, voting, and choices; the host’s own platform input remains necessary for setup and menu navigation. The same arrangement works remotely when the host shares the game screen and each player keeps a separate browser controller.
