Yes—you can play It Takes Two with a friend on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch version as supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with the original Switch version. The game supports two players on one console, two players through local wireless, and two players online.
You do not both need to buy the full game. One player can own It Takes Two; the other can download Friend’s Pass and join the owner. Online sessions require Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. The setup depends on whether you are sharing one console, using two nearby consoles, or playing over the internet.

What Nintendo Switch 2 supports
Nintendo’s current US product listing for It Takes Two identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch title and gives it the compatibility label “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That means you use the Switch edition on Switch 2; Nintendo does not describe a separate Switch 2 edition for this game.

For It Takes Two, Nintendo specifically lists the game as supported, so the expected modes and game behavior are those of the Switch release.

The official listings establish a two-player limit for each supported arrangement:
| Play arrangement | Players | Consoles | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-system co-op | 2 | 1 | Both people play on the same Switch 2 and need compatible controllers. |
| Local wireless | 2 | 2 nearby consoles | Each player uses a separate console; Nintendo lists this separately from online play. |
| Online co-op | 2 | 2 consoles connected online | Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account are required. |
The listings do not establish cross-platform play with other consoles or computers. Do not assume that a Switch 2 player can join a player on another platform unless a current in-game or official announcement explicitly says so.

Both players in the same room with one Switch 2
Choose single-system co-op. You share one screen and one console. This is the simplest arrangement when you have enough compatible controllers. Nintendo Australia’s regional listing specifies one pair of Joy-Con controllers per player for couch co-op; Nintendo’s US listing more generally warns that additional accessories may be required. Controller requirements can vary by region and by the arrangement you are using, so check the notices shown for your console and game.
Both players nearby with separate consoles
Choose local wireless. Nintendo lists two players for this mode, but it is not the same as internet play. Each person uses a separate console in the same vicinity and follows the game’s current local-wireless prompts.
Players in different locations
Choose online play. Nintendo lists two online players and states that Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account are required. The official pages reviewed do not document a reliable, current sequence of invitation-menu labels, so use the prompts displayed by the game rather than following an old button-by-button guide.
Requirements before you start
- A Nintendo Switch copy of It Takes Two: use the physical card or digital version that Nintendo lists as supported on Switch 2.
- One full-game owner: the complete adventure can be shared with a guest through Friend’s Pass; the guest does not need a second full-game purchase.
- Friend’s Pass for the guest: the guest downloads the separate Friend’s Pass listing. Nintendo says the first level is free to anyone who downloads it, and a guest can access the full adventure when invited by someone who owns the full game.
- Nintendo Account: required for online play according to Nintendo’s Switch release announcement.
- Nintendo Switch Online membership: required for online play according to Nintendo. Membership terms and availability can change by region, so verify the current terms for the account’s country before starting.
- Compatible controllers: each player needs a controller that the game accepts. Nintendo Australia’s listing gives one pair of Joy-Con controllers per player for couch co-op; other controller combinations should be checked against the game’s on-screen instructions.
- Two consoles for local wireless or online: single-system play uses one console, while the other modes use one console for each player.
There is no official price or universal membership term stated in the cited product pages. Check your regional Nintendo store for the current cost of the game, Friend’s Pass availability, and Nintendo Switch Online conditions.

How to play on one Switch 2
Single-system co-op is the correct choice when both players are sitting at the same console.
- Install or insert the Nintendo Switch version. Start It Takes Two on the Switch 2 and allow any required software update to finish before inviting the second player.
- Prepare two player controls. Pair and test a compatible controller for each person. If you are using Joy-Con controllers, follow the console’s pairing and horizontal/vertical orientation prompts. Nintendo Australia states that couch co-op requires one pair of Joy-Con controllers per player; your regional listing may present the requirement differently.
- Select the local or single-system option shown by the game. The exact wording can change with software updates and language settings. Choose the option that keeps both players on the same console rather than local wireless or online.
- Have the second player join when prompted. Press the confirmation button on that player’s controller when the game asks for a second participant. If the prompt does not appear, return to the game’s multiplayer screen and verify that both controllers are still assigned.
- Choose a save or begin the adventure. The game should then place both players in the same session. Keep both controllers connected for the entire couch session.
- Pause safely when changing controllers. If a controller disconnects, reconnect it through the Switch 2 controller settings, then follow the game’s prompt to rejoin. Avoid removing the active player’s controller while the game is saving or loading.
Single-system play does not require Nintendo Switch Online because both players are using the same console. The controller requirement still applies, and Nintendo cautions that additional accessories may be needed.
How to use local wireless with two consoles
Local wireless is for two players who are physically near one another but want to use separate consoles. Nintendo lists this as a two-player mode, distinct from online play.
- Prepare both consoles. Each player should launch the Nintendo Switch version of It Takes Two on a compatible console. Keep the consoles close enough for their local wireless connection and make sure each player has a working controller.
- Open the multiplayer option on both systems. Select the local-wireless choice shown in the game. Do not select the online option; the two modes are listed separately by Nintendo.
- Let one player create or host the local session. Follow the host console’s on-screen instructions. The official product pages do not provide a universal sequence of menu names, so use the labels currently displayed in your game version.
- Join from the second console. On the other Switch 2, choose the matching local-wireless session when it appears and confirm the connection.
- Start after both players are shown. Do not begin until each console reports that the other player has joined. If the session does not appear, move the consoles closer, exit back to the multiplayer screen on both systems, and try the local-wireless search again.
Local wireless should not be described as internet multiplayer. Nintendo’s listing confirms the mode and player count but does not state a current requirement for Nintendo Switch Online for this arrangement; the paid-service requirement in Nintendo’s announcement applies to online play.
How to play online with a friend
Online co-op is the option when the players are in different places. Nintendo lists two online players and says online play requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account.
- Confirm account and membership status. Each player should be signed in to a Nintendo Account. Check that the account used for the online session has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership under the current regional terms.
- Install the correct software on each console. The owner launches the full Nintendo Switch game. The guest installs Friend’s Pass if they do not own the full game.
- Open the game’s online multiplayer option. Select the online mode shown in the current game menus. The wording may differ by language or update, so rely on the prompts on the screen.
- Have the owner start the invitation process. The player who owns the full game should use the in-game option to invite the friend. Nintendo’s published pages do not document a stable sequence of exact invitation-menu labels; do not substitute a console-friend-list procedure unless the game itself directs you to it.
- Have the guest accept from Friend’s Pass. The guest opens Friend’s Pass and accepts the owner’s invitation using the prompt provided by the game.
- Wait for both players to appear in the session. Start only after the owner and guest are shown as connected. If the invitation expires, return to the online multiplayer screen and send a new one.
A second full-game purchase is not required for the invited guest, but the owner must have the full game. The first level is available free to anyone who downloads Friend’s Pass; the full adventure becomes available to that guest when joining a friend who owns the game.
Friend’s Pass: who needs to buy the game?
Nintendo’s Friend’s Pass store listing describes the guest offer as “Download Friend’s Pass to play It Takes Two with a friend – for free!” That wording does not mean two free copies unlock the entire campaign. The ownership arrangement works as follows:
Rank #3
- Experience the classic run and gun action with a pal in 2-player local co-op
- Includes the “Delicious Last Course” expansion filled with new bosses and brand-new character Ms. Chalice
- Includes exclusive “Cuphead Funnies” comic collector cards & vintage-inspired “Cuphead Club Membership”, and a hand-drawn reversible coversheet
| Player | Software | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Full Nintendo Switch game | Can host the complete adventure. |
| Guest | Friend’s Pass | Can play the first level free and join the owner for the full adventure. |
| Two players without a full-game owner | Friend’s Pass only | Not established as a way to unlock the complete campaign; one player must own the full game. |
Download Friend’s Pass from the Nintendo store serving the guest’s account. Store availability, download size, and account conditions can differ by region. If the guest cannot join, first verify that the owner is running the full game and that both players are using the same online or local-wireless mode.

Controller planning for couch co-op
Controller confusion is the most common avoidable problem with single-system play. Plan the hardware before launching:
- Two complete Joy-Con pairs: Nintendo Australia explicitly lists one pair per player for couch co-op.
- Other compatible controllers: Nintendo’s general listing says a compatible controller is needed per player and warns that additional accessories may be required. Confirm compatibility in your regional listing and in the game’s own controller prompt.
- Mixed arrangements: If one player uses Joy-Con and the other uses another supported controller, pair both before opening the multiplayer screen and follow the assignment shown on screen.
- Battery and pairing check: Charge wireless controllers, pair them in the Switch 2 controller settings, and press a button on each one to confirm that the console recognizes both.
Do not buy an additional controller solely because a generic guide says one is required. The exact need depends on whether you already have two compatible player controls and on the regional hardware notice.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not start on Switch 2
- Confirm that you are using the Nintendo Switch edition, not an unrelated platform release.
- Install available game and system updates, then restart the console.
- Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for your region. The US listing marks It Takes Two as supported, while Nintendo’s general guidance notes that compatibility can vary by title.
- If you use a physical card, remove and reinsert it with the console powered down or follow the console’s standard software troubleshooting prompts.
The second player is not detected on one console
- Open the Switch 2 controller settings and verify that two controllers are assigned.
- Reconnect or re-pair the controller that is missing, then return to the game’s multiplayer screen.
- Check that each player has a complete compatible controller arrangement. Nintendo Australia’s couch requirement is one Joy-Con pair per player.
- Choose the single-system option, not local wireless or online.
The nearby console cannot find the session
- Confirm that both players selected local wireless rather than online.
- Move the consoles closer and retry the search from the game’s multiplayer screen.
- Exit the local-wireless screen on both consoles and enter it again so one player can host and the other can join.
- Check that both consoles are running the same current game version.
The online invitation fails
- Verify Nintendo Account sign-in on both consoles.
- Confirm the required Nintendo Switch Online membership under the account’s current regional terms.
- Make sure the owner launched the full game and the guest launched Friend’s Pass.
- Check that both players selected online mode; a local-wireless session cannot be joined through an online invitation.
- Return to the game’s online screen and send a fresh invitation if the original expired.
The guest can play only the first level
That is the stated free allowance for Friend’s Pass. To continue through the full adventure, the guest must join an invitation from a friend who owns the full game. Friend’s Pass alone is not presented by Nintendo as a substitute for a full-game owner.
Regional and feature limits to keep in mind
Nintendo’s Australian listing contains more specific controller wording than the US listing, so treat the one-pair-per-player couch requirement as a regional notice and check the store page for the account’s region. Player counts are consistent in the cited US and Australian listings: two on one system, two through local wireless, and two online.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The official pages do not provide a dependable, current list of invitation-menu labels. Game updates, language settings, and regional interfaces can change those labels. Use the game’s current prompts rather than relying on a fixed sequence copied from an older guide.
Nintendo’s sources also separate local wireless from online play and do not establish cross-platform multiplayer. The supported conclusion is therefore limited to two-player sessions using the Nintendo Switch version on compatible Switch-family consoles, including Switch 2 as identified by Nintendo’s compatibility label.
Fast decision guide
| Your situation | Select | Extra checks |
|---|---|---|
| Two people, one Switch 2 | Single-system co-op | Two compatible player controllers. |
| Two people nearby, two consoles | Local wireless | Select local wireless on both consoles; follow the host and join prompts. |
| Two people in different locations | Online | Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership; use the game’s current invitation prompts. |
| Only one person owns the game | Friend’s Pass for the guest | Guest gets the first level free and can join the owner for the full adventure. |
Once the mode, controllers, software ownership, and account requirements match your situation, It Takes Two on Switch 2 should use the same cooperative structure Nintendo lists for the Switch version.
