Yes—Hello Kitty Island Adventure supports online play for two people on Nintendo Switch. Each player needs internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The host creates a session in the game’s Phone app, shares the displayed multiplayer code, and the other player enters that code through Join Friend.
The exact menu sequence below follows the game’s community wiki, while Nintendo’s eShop and support documentation establish the player count, online-membership requirement, and HOME Menu invitation behavior. Because the in-game menus can change with updates, use the labels currently shown on your screen if they differ slightly.

What you need before starting
Set up both Nintendo Switch systems before either player opens the multiplayer screen. Nintendo’s eShop listing describes one local player and one to two online players, so the friend mode covered here is an online two-player session rather than split-screen co-op.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A Nintendo Switch copy of Hello Kitty Island Adventure: both players must be using the Nintendo Switch version of the game.
- Internet access on both consoles: the multiplayer session is online, not a local wireless mode.
- A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for both players: Nintendo identifies the membership as required for the game’s online modes.
- The same game update: the community wiki advises that both players update to the same version before connecting.
- Multiplayer unlocked in the game: the community wiki says the host should complete the early quest “Small Gift Big Smile” and begin “Friends From Afar” to unlock all multiplayer functionality.
The quest requirement is community guidance rather than a requirement confirmed on Nintendo’s support pages. If the Multiplayer application is missing or options are unavailable, check the current quest objectives in your save file before changing console settings.

Multiplayer guests can even decorate their own Friendship Cabins on your island.
How to unlock multiplayer
New saves may not expose every multiplayer option immediately. According to the game’s community wiki, complete Small Gift Big Smile, then start Friends From Afar. The wiki associates that point in the story with unlocking the full multiplayer functionality.
Quest names and unlock conditions can change when the game is updated, so treat this as an in-game checkpoint rather than a guarantee that every player will see identical wording. If your game shows a different objective, follow the objective displayed by your current version. Once the Phone contains the Multiplayer application and its joining options, you can proceed to the connection steps.
How the host creates a session
The player who wants to bring the friend into their island acts as the host. Have the joining player ready before generating the code, because the community wiki describes the code as temporary.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Load the save file that will host the session.
- Open the in-game Phone.
- Select the Multiplayer application.
- Choose the option that creates or displays a multiplayer session code.
- Share the code shown on the screen with your friend using a private message or a voice call.
- Leave the Multiplayer application open while the other player enters the code.
Do not close and reopen the Multiplayer application while your friend is trying to connect. The community wiki warns that codes can change when the application is reopened, so a code that was copied earlier may stop working. If the code is rejected, generate or display the current code again and send that latest code.
How the friend joins with the code
The second player joins from their own copy of the game. They do not enter the code in the Switch HOME Menu; the code belongs in the game’s Multiplayer application.
- Launch Hello Kitty Island Adventure and load the intended save file.
- Open the in-game Phone.
- Select Multiplayer.
- Choose Join Friend.
- Enter the host’s current session code exactly as displayed.
- Submit the code and wait for the host’s island to load.
If the join attempt fails, compare the code character by character and ask the host whether the Multiplayer application was reopened. A new code must be copied again after the application is reopened.
Using a Nintendo Switch invitation
Nintendo’s general invitation system is separate from the game’s code flow. If you receive a Switch online-play invitation, Nintendo says you can accept it from the HOME Menu by opening your profile and selecting Online Play Invites.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press the HOME button while the invitation is available.
- Select your user profile at the top of the HOME Menu.
- Open Online Play Invites.
- Select the invitation and follow the on-screen instructions to return to the game.
Nintendo also states: “It is not possible to invite specific people on your Friend List to join a multiplayer game through the Nintendo Switch User Page menu.” In practice, that means you should use the game’s Multiplayer application and session code for Hello Kitty Island Adventure rather than looking for a direct Friend List invitation button on the User Page. The HOME Menu route is useful for accepting an invitation that has already been received, not for replacing the game’s own setup.
Online play versus local play
Nintendo’s eShop listing gives the game a capacity of one local player and one to two online players. That distinction matters when planning a session:
| Mode | Players listed by Nintendo | Connection method |
|---|---|---|
| Local play | 1 player | The eShop listing does not describe local two-player co-op for this title. |
| Online play | 1–2 players | Internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, with multiplayer setup handled in the game. |
The online limit is two players total, so one host and one friend fill the supported online session. Additional friends cannot be added to the same two-player session under the player count listed by Nintendo.
How to plan a first session
Decide in advance which save will host. The host is the player who opens the Multiplayer application and supplies the active code, while the other player uses Join Friend. This simple division avoids both players waiting for a code that neither has generated.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The community wiki specifically connects full multiplayer functionality with completing “Small Gift Big Smile” and starting “Friends From Afar.” Since this is secondary, update-sensitive guidance, check the quest tracker in the current version rather than assuming an old save and a new save expose identical options.

Arrange a private way to share the code. A voice call or direct message is practical, but do not post a temporary session code publicly. Keep the host’s Multiplayer screen open while the friend enters it, and send the code only after confirming that the host is looking at the current display.
Cost and availability notes
The recurring requirement for online play is a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for each participant. Nintendo’s eShop listing identifies that membership requirement; it does not make online play a free feature simply because the players are already Nintendo friends.
Nintendo Canada announced a limited Game Trial for Nintendo Switch Online members from October 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT through October 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PT, plus a 45% digital discount through October 18, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Those dates and terms apply to the Canadian promotion announced on October 8, 2026. The trial window has ended, and the discount should not be assumed to apply in another country or remain available after the stated deadline. Troubleshooting connection problems
The Multiplayer application is unavailable
Check whether the save has reached the multiplayer unlock point described by the community wiki: complete “Small Gift Big Smile” and start “Friends From Afar.” Also confirm that the game has finished installing its latest update. If the quest names or sequence look different, use the objectives shown in your version because the wiki is a secondary, update-sensitive source.
The friend gets an invalid or expired code message
Ask the host to open the Multiplayer application again, display the current code, and send it immediately. Codes are reported to be temporary and may change after reopening the application. The host should keep the code screen open until the join attempt succeeds.
The code is correct but the join still fails
- Confirm that both players have an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Confirm that both consoles are connected to the internet.
- Check that both copies of the game are on the same update version.
- Verify that both players are using the same supported platform generation for the session; see the Switch-generation note below.
- Close and relaunch the game only if necessary, then have the host create a fresh code and repeat the join process.
Restarting the code flow is preferable to repeatedly entering an old code, because reopening Multiplayer can invalidate the previous one.

The invitation is visible, but the game does not open
Accept the invitation through HOME Menu profile → Online Play Invites, then follow the prompt back into the game. If no invitation appears, do not assume the game has sent one through the Friend List. Nintendo’s support guidance says direct invitations to specific Friend List users cannot be sent from the Switch User Page menu, so return to the in-game Phone → Multiplayer flow and use the host’s code.
One player cannot see the same menu labels
Compare game versions first. The community wiki’s same-update guidance is especially relevant when one player has just installed a patch. After updating, close and reopen the game so the new version is fully loaded, then check the Phone again. If the quest-based unlock has not been reached on one save, that player may not have the same Multiplayer options even when the consoles are online.
The host and friend keep missing each other
Start over in a controlled order: both players close the game if it is stuck, confirm memberships and internet access, and relaunch. The host should load the intended save, open Phone → Multiplayer, and send the newly displayed code. The friend should then load their save and select Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend. This removes uncertainty about which player generated the code and whether it was replaced.
You are unsure whether a problem is the game or Nintendo service
First test the basic requirements that are specific to this title: the two consoles, matching updates, the multiplayer unlock state, and a fresh code. If those are correct but the connection still fails, note the console models, game versions, and exact error text before contacting Nintendo or the game’s support channels. That information is more useful than repeatedly entering the same expired code.
Switch and Switch 2 compatibility: what is confirmed
The available official information confirms Nintendo Switch software, online play, and the Nintendo Switch Online requirement. The community wiki reports that Switch 1 and Switch 2 multiplayer is currently incompatible, but that generation-specific claim was not confirmed by a primary Nintendo source.

- A new Spin on a Classic: You've never played classic Sonic like this before!
- Multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and more with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.
- lay as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, using their unique abilities to explore and uncover new paths and secrets.
- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
Therefore, do not treat cross-generation incompatibility as an established rule. Before planning a session between a Switch and a Switch 2, check the game’s current compatibility information, update both systems and the game, and test with a fresh multiplayer code. If the connection fails only across generations, record the exact console models and game versions when contacting Nintendo or the game’s support channels.
What happens when you finish or leave a session
The documented setup covers creating and joining a session; it does not establish a separate larger lobby or a local split-screen mode. Treat the connection as a two-player online session: one player hosts and one player joins. If you need to reconnect later, have the host return to the Multiplayer application and share the current code rather than relying on a code from an earlier attempt.
Do not infer that being Nintendo friends automatically preserves a session. The Friend List helps identify or contact the other person, but Nintendo’s support guidance says the User Page cannot send a direct invitation to a specific friend. The in-game Phone flow remains the reliable route for starting another session.
A reliable session checklist
Use this short checklist before sharing a code:
- Both players are on Nintendo Switch versions of the game.
- Both players have internet access.
- Both players have paid Nintendo Switch Online memberships.
- Both games are updated to the same version.
- The host’s save has reached the multiplayer unlock point shown in the game.
- The host has opened Phone → Multiplayer and is looking at the current code.
- The host has not closed and reopened Multiplayer after sending the code.
- The joining player is entering the code through Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend.
If every item is satisfied and the session still fails, create a new code instead of reusing the old one, then retry after restarting both games. This isolates the most common code-state and version problems without changing unrelated console settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What each player can expect
The supported online arrangement is a two-player session: one player hosts and one joins. The host controls when the session code is created, while the friend uses the code to enter the host’s game. Because Nintendo lists one to two online players, the arrangement is not designed as a larger group lobby.
Online play also differs from simply adding someone to a Nintendo Friend List. A Friend List relationship can make it easier to communicate, but it does not replace the in-game Multiplayer setup. Use the Phone application to create and join the session, and use the HOME Menu only when accepting a Nintendo invitation that has already been delivered.
Quick answer to the most common questions
Do both players need Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo’s eShop information says the game’s online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, so both participants should have an active membership before trying to connect.
Where do I enter the multiplayer code?
Open the game’s Phone, select Multiplayer, choose Join Friend, and enter the host’s current code.
Can I invite a friend directly from the Switch Friend List?
Not through the Switch User Page menu. Nintendo says direct invitations to specific Friend List users are not supported there; use Hello Kitty Island Adventure’s in-game Multiplayer application instead.
Why did a code that worked earlier stop working?
The community wiki says codes are temporary and may change when the Multiplayer application is reopened. Ask the host to display and share the current code again.
How many people can play online together?
Nintendo’s eShop listing specifies one to two online players. That means the supported arrangement is one host plus one friend, not a larger group session.

What if one player is on Switch 2?
Cross-generation compatibility is not confirmed by a primary Nintendo source here. The community wiki reports incompatibility between Switch and Switch 2, but treat that as community guidance and verify the current game and system compatibility before planning the session.
Do both players need the same update?
The community wiki advises matching update versions. Update both copies, fully restart the game, and create a fresh host code before trying again.
Can the host reuse yesterday’s code?
Do not assume so. Codes are reported as temporary and may change when Multiplayer is reopened. Generate and share the code currently displayed on the host’s screen.
What should I do if the quest names do not match?
“Small Gift Big Smile” and “Friends From Afar” are community-wiki guidance for reaching multiplayer functionality. If your updated game shows different objectives, follow the quest text in your save and look for the Multiplayer application in the Phone.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hello Kitty Island Adventure supports two-player online play on Nintendo Switch. Both players need internet access, the game’s Nintendo Switch version, matching updates, and paid Nintendo Switch Online memberships. After multiplayer is unlocked, the host uses Phone → Multiplayer to create a temporary code; the friend joins through Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend. Use HOME Menu → profile → Online Play Invites only to accept an invitation that has already arrived, and regenerate the code whenever the Multiplayer screen is reopened.
