Invite a friend to online campaign co-op

Make sure each player owns Halo: The Master Chief Collection and has an Xbox network account. Online play requires an account on every supported platform. Under Halo Support’s current guidance, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players also need an active Game Pass subscription; Microsoft Store PC purchasers do not need an active subscription, and Steam players do not need active Xbox Live Gold. Both players open MCC and go to the main menu. On Xbox, press X to open the Roster. On PC, select the Roster button at the top right.

Select your friend’s name and choose Invite Player. They must accept the invitation; their name should then appear in the host’s group roster.

Choose Campaigns, select a game, and start the campaign or a mission. For a first playthrough, Halo Support recommends starting with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Use Quick Start to begin or Resume to continue a saved session. Halo Support’s quick-start guide.

Connect a controller for each player.

From the MCC main menu, press X to open the Roster. With the second controller, press A, then sign in to an Xbox profile or choose Add guest.

Start a campaign after the second player appears in the roster. A guest profile does not retain save data after signing out.
Campaign split-screen on one Xbox supports up to two players. MCC supports larger split-screen groups in some other modes, but that four-player limit does not apply to campaigns. Halo Support’s quick-start guide.
Check the campaign’s player limit
The campaign you choose determines how many people can join. Halo Support lists these maximum co-op group sizes:

These are campaign co-op caps, not a guarantee that every campaign supports the same local setup. For local campaign split-screen, the cap is two on Xbox. Halo Support’s campaign player-limit guidance.
Know the PC and cross-play limits
PC players can join campaign co-op online with friends through the Xbox network, but MCC does not support campaign split-screen on PC. Cross-play is available for some MCC online modes, but Halo Support says Campaign and Campaign Playlists currently cannot use cross-play. A PC player and an Xbox player therefore cannot campaign together through MCC cross-play. Halo Support’s quick-start guide.

Check that your friend accepted the invite and appears in the group roster before you start.

Confirm that every player has an Xbox network account and that console players meet the current online subscription requirement.

Make sure the group is within the player cap for the selected campaign.

If one player is on PC and the other is on Xbox, use compatible platforms for campaign play; MCC campaign cross-play is not supported.

If you are trying to use local split-screen, move to an Xbox and keep the campaign group to two players. PC MCC does not offer campaign split-screen.
