Play Halo 4’s main campaign first, then Spartan Ops if you want the complete Halo 4 story. You do not need Halo 4 to understand Halo: New Covenant, however, because New Covenant is a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST, not the official sequel to Halo 4. Its Steam Workshop listing places the mod’s story after Halo 3. Treat Halo 4 as optional background rather than a prerequisite.
The short answer: two different continuities are being confused
There are two sensible play-order questions here:
- For Halo 4’s own narrative: play the Halo 4 campaign, then play Spartan Ops.
- For Halo: New Covenant: the mod is presented as a post-Halo 3 campaign for Halo 3: ODST. You can start it without completing Halo 4.
Halo 4 is an official series entry and the opening chapter of the Reclaimer Saga. New Covenant is a fan-made project distributed through Steam Workshop. The similar “next Halo game” assumption is therefore incorrect: New Covenant is not an official continuation of Halo 4, and its Workshop description does not make Halo 4 a story requirement.

That distinction also keeps the practical advice clear. One order concerns an official campaign and its episodic follow-up; the other concerns a community project whose creator controls the current files and setup notes. You can enjoy both, but they should not be treated as consecutive chapters in one licensed storyline.

What Halo 4 adds to the official story
Its place after Halo 3
Microsoft’s November 5, 2012 launch announcement describes Halo 4 as taking place nearly five years after Halo 3. The story follows Master Chief and Cortana into a mysterious new world, where they encounter an ancient threat. That setting starts a new saga rather than immediately continuing the same conflict in the same location.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Playing Halo 3 first gives you the intended context for the Chief and Cortana, the conclusion of the original trilogy, and the time gap that Halo 4 expects. If you have already finished Halo 3, Halo 4 is the natural next official campaign. If you have not, Halo 4 can still be played on its own, but major character and continuity beats will carry more weight in release order.
The official chronology can therefore be summarized as Halo 3, then Halo 4. New Covenant’s “after Halo 3” description does not move it into the official slot between Halo 3 and Halo 4; it identifies the fan project’s own setting while it runs on the Halo 3: ODST framework.
Why Spartan Ops comes after the campaign
Spartan Ops is not a separate prequel. Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 Halo 4 PC announcement describes its missions as episodic, cooperative story content that picks up “right where the main campaign concludes.” Microsoft’s launch-era framing presented Spartan Ops as a weekly episodic cooperative story, so it is best approached as post-campaign material rather than as an alternate opening.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor that reason, the clean Halo 4 order is:
- Complete the Halo 4 campaign.
- Start Spartan Ops and play its episodes in the order shown in the game.
- Play multiplayer, Forge, or other modes whenever you want; they are not needed to follow the campaign plot.
Spartan Ops is optional if you only want Master Chief’s central campaign. It is the officially described episodic continuation if you want the broader Halo 4 narrative. You do not need to interrupt the campaign to sample it, and you do not need multiplayer or Forge to understand either story mode.
What Halo: New Covenant actually is
A Halo 3: ODST campaign mod
The project’s Steam Workshop page identifies Halo: New Covenant as a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST. Its stated setup is after Halo 3. That makes it a fan project built on an earlier game, not a numbered Halo release and not an official sequel placed after Halo 4.
The distinction matters because the title can sound like an unannounced or newly released Microsoft game. It is neither. The Workshop listing is the relevant place for the mod’s current description, compatibility notes, and installation requirements. Those requirements can change, so check the live listing immediately before installing rather than relying on an old guide.
It is also separate from other official projects that may use familiar Halo branding. For example, the officially announced Halo: Campaign Evolved project is not the same product as the Workshop mod called Halo: New Covenant. Similar names or recent headlines should not change the mod’s stated identity as an ODST-based community campaign.

No. Nothing in the project description establishes Halo 4 as a prerequisite. If your goal is simply to try New Covenant, follow the mod’s current setup instructions and start it when your Halo 3-related play order reaches that point. If your goal is to understand the official Reclaimer Saga, play Halo 4 separately; that is a different continuity path.
Playing Halo 4 first may give you more familiarity with later-era Halo presentation and terminology, but that is optional context, not a required story chapter. Conversely, playing New Covenant will not substitute for Halo 4 or Spartan Ops because it is not an official entry in that sequence.

Recommended orders for different kinds of players
| What you want | Recommended order | Is Halo 4 required before New Covenant? |
|---|---|---|
| Halo 4’s complete story | Halo 4 campaign → Spartan Ops | Not applicable |
| The official mainline context | Halo 3 → Halo 4 campaign → Spartan Ops | No; New Covenant is separate |
| To play the fan mod quickly | Install the current Halo 3: ODST mod version, then follow its Workshop instructions | No |
| To sample only the central Halo 4 arc | Halo 4 campaign; skip Spartan Ops until you want its continuation | No |
| To explore all available content | Halo 3 → Halo 4 campaign → Spartan Ops → New Covenant as a separate fan project | No |
The final row is a practical completionist route, not an official chronology for New Covenant. The mod’s own listing, rather than Halo 4’s release order, determines how its story is framed.
If you are avoiding spoilers, finish the Halo 4 campaign before reading detailed Spartan Ops descriptions. If you are primarily interested in ODST-era fan content, you can install New Covenant independently and return to Halo 4 later without breaking the official campaign order.

How to play Halo 4 today
Option 1: Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Halo 4 is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 announcement named PC access through Xbox Game Pass for PC, the Microsoft Store, and Steam, and described MCC as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Those are historical availability statements, not a guarantee of today’s price or subscription terms. Check the current storefront listing for the edition, download size, price, and whether your subscription includes the game.
- Install or open MCC on your supported PC or Xbox console.
- In the game’s campaign or installed-content menu, select Halo 4.
- Choose Campaign and begin a new game, or select a mission if you are resuming a save.
- After the campaign is complete, open the Halo 4 menu and select Spartan Ops.
- Play the episodes in the order presented. Use cooperative matchmaking or invite friends if you want the episodic missions with other players.
MCC uses modernized services and is not affected by the shutdown of the original Xbox 360 Halo services described below. Individual storefront features, regional pricing, and subscription eligibility still need to be confirmed at the time you buy or install.
MCC is usually the least confusing route for a new player because Halo 4, its campaign menus, and Spartan Ops are presented within the same modern collection. It also avoids assuming that a legacy Xbox 360 disc, license, or online account will behave like a current release.
Option 2: the original Xbox 360 release
The original Halo 4 release was for Xbox 360. A physical Xbox 360 copy remains a route for readers who specifically want that version, but used-disc condition, completeness, and availability vary. A used copy should not be treated as a promise that every historical online feature still works.
Halo Support records a major service change on January 13, 2022. The online services for Xbox 360 Halo games were reduced or disabled on that date. The campaign and several local features remain available, but service-dependent functions no longer behave as they did at launch.
On the original version, Halo Support lists Halo 4 campaign, Spartan Ops, custom games, Forge, split-screen, LAN, and online squads among the features that continue. Other functions that depended on the retired services are affected. The exact behavior can depend on whether you are playing locally, over a LAN, or through a legacy online path.
If buying second-hand, check that the disc is readable and that the package contains the expected game disc rather than assuming a listing’s stock photograph is accurate. The physical route makes sense for a collector, someone using an Xbox 360, or a player specifically seeking local split-screen and LAN options. It is less suitable if your priority is current matchmaking or a fully supported storefront experience.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Backward compatibility is not the same as MCC
The Xbox 360 service change also affects backward-compatible play of the original 360 game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Installing the old disc or digital license through backward compatibility does not turn it into the modern MCC version. If you want the service behavior and platform support associated with MCC, use MCC itself rather than the backward-compatible 360 release.

Installing New Covenant without assuming an official release
Because New Covenant is a Workshop mod, the safest procedure is deliberately simple:
- Open the project’s current Steam Workshop page and read its stated game version, dependencies, and installation notes.
- Confirm that your installed Halo 3: ODST build matches the version requested by the creator.
- Subscribe to or download the project using the method specified on that page.
- Follow the creator’s launch instructions exactly, including any required load order or campaign selection.
- Start a test launch before committing to a long play session. If the campaign does not appear, reread the compatibility and dependency notes instead of assuming Halo 4 is missing.
The available information does not establish a permanent set of installation steps or a guaranteed compatibility matrix. Steam Workshop instructions are therefore the authority for the current build. Do not install an old third-party package simply because a video or forum post uses the same title.
Keep the mod’s requirements separate from Halo 4’s requirements. Owning or completing Halo 4 does not automatically install ODST files, provide a mod loader, or guarantee that the Workshop project will work with every current build. Conversely, an ODST installation problem is not evidence that you chose the wrong Halo 4 order.
How the two stories relate without spoilers
Halo 4
Halo 4 follows Master Chief and Cortana nearly five years after Halo 3 and introduces an ancient danger in a new setting. Its campaign is the mainline story; Spartan Ops continues the situation immediately afterward through episodic cooperative missions.
New Covenant
New Covenant is framed by its Workshop listing as a post-Halo 3 campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST. It is best understood as an independent fan interpretation that uses the ODST game as its platform. It does not occupy the official slot after Halo 4, and it does not replace Halo 4’s campaign or Spartan Ops.
Common mistakes and fixes
“New Covenant” is the next official Halo game
Why it happens: The name sounds like a numbered sequel or a new story chapter.
Fix: Check the project type on its Workshop page. It is identified as a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST, with a post-Halo 3 setting.

Starting Spartan Ops before Halo 4’s campaign
Why it causes confusion: Spartan Ops is selectable as its own mode, but its story begins where the campaign ends.
Fix: Finish the Halo 4 campaign first, then open Spartan Ops. Multiplayer and Forge can be played independently.
Expecting the original 360 online experience
Why it happens: A physical disc or backward-compatible copy can look identical to the release people remember.
Fix: Separate local and surviving features from services affected by the January 13, 2022 Xbox 360 shutdown. Choose MCC if you specifically want its modernized service environment.
Assuming a storefront listing is still current
Why it happens: The 2020 MCC announcement named several PC access routes, but storefront prices, bundles, and subscriptions change.
Fix: Verify the live Microsoft Store, Steam, or Xbox listing for your region before purchasing or subscribing.
Using an outdated mod tutorial
Why it happens: Workshop projects can receive updates, and game builds can change.
Fix: Use the current Workshop description and creator notes. Confirm the required ODST version and any dependencies at installation time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfusing backward compatibility with the collection

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision guide
- Choose Halo 4 first if you want the official story that follows Halo 3 or want to understand the Reclaimer Saga’s opening.
- Add Spartan Ops if you want the officially described episodic continuation after the campaign.
- Go straight to New Covenant if you are interested in the fan mod and do not need Halo 4’s official storyline first.
- Use MCC when you want Halo 4 on a current PC or newer Xbox environment and want to avoid relying on legacy 360 services.
- Use the original 360 release only when preserving that version, its local modes, or a physical collection matters more than modern service support.
What to verify before you start
- Your platform: original Xbox 360, backward-compatible 360 release on a newer Xbox, or MCC on PC/newer Xbox.
- Whether your current storefront listing includes Halo 4, and whether access is a purchase or a subscription benefit in your region.
- Whether you want only the campaign or also Spartan Ops.
- For New Covenant, the current Workshop compatibility notes, dependencies, and launch method.
- For physical Xbox 360 copies, the disc condition and which online functions you actually expect to use.
- Whether you are trying to preserve local, split-screen, or LAN play, since those goals can favor the original release over MCC.
Bottom line on the order
For Halo 4 itself, the correct narrative order is campaign first, Spartan Ops second. For New Covenant, Halo 4 is optional: the project is a community-made Halo 3: ODST campaign mod whose listed setting is after Halo 3. Play Halo 4 for the official Reclaimer Saga, and approach New Covenant as a separate fan-made experience rather than the next numbered installment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play Halo 4 before Halo: New Covenant?
No. New Covenant is listed as a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST with a post-Halo 3 setting. Halo 4 is optional background, not a stated prerequisite.
What order should I play Halo 4 and Spartan Ops?
Finish the Halo 4 campaign first, then play Spartan Ops in the episode order shown in the game. Xbox Wire describes Spartan Ops as episodic story content that picks up where the campaign ends.
Is Halo: New Covenant an official Halo sequel?
No. Its Steam Workshop listing identifies it as a fan-made campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST. It is not the official sequel to Halo 4.
Can I play Halo 4 without Halo 3?
Yes, but Halo 3 provides the intended preceding context for Master Chief, Cortana, and the original trilogy’s conclusion. Halo 4 is set nearly five years after Halo 3.
What is the best current way to play Halo 4?
MCC is the modern route on supported PC and newer Xbox platforms. Verify the current Microsoft Store, Steam, or Xbox listing for price, edition, platform support, and subscription terms.
Does the original Xbox 360 version still have online features?
Xbox 360 Halo services were reduced or disabled on January 13, 2022. Campaign, Spartan Ops, custom games, Forge, split-screen, LAN, and online squads are listed as continuing, while other service-dependent functions are affected.
Where should I get installation instructions for New Covenant?
Use the project’s current Steam Workshop page. Check its required Halo 3: ODST version, dependencies, launch method, and compatibility notes because those details can change.
The Bottom Line
Play Halo 4’s campaign, then Spartan Ops. You do not need Halo 4 before Halo: New Covenant: the Workshop project is a separate, post-Halo 3 Halo 3: ODST community mod, not an official Reclaimer Saga sequel.
