What you need
Start with a legitimate copy of the classic PC version, not an unlicensed executable. The procedures below apply to that original Windows release and its game folder, commonly the folder containing gta-vc.exe.

- SilentPatch: Silent’s Blog lists Build 12.1, updated August 15, 2026. It addresses crashes, the DirectPlay dependency, video-memory errors, high-refresh-rate behavior, HUD scaling and other compatibility problems in the classic build.
- GInput: This plug-in replaces the PC release’s DirectInput handling with XInput. It supplies console-style mappings, vibration and automatic switching between keyboard/mouse and controller input.
- GTAVC.WidescreenFix: This corrects widescreen presentation, including HUD placement, the crosshair and the relationship between the crosshair and bullet impact.
- Rockstar’s 1.1 patch: Use it only when you are experiencing the graphics-corruption issue described on Rockstar’s patch page. Rockstar says the patch is an unsupported fix for certain configurations and that it is the only change made from the original version.
The original 2002–2003 manual lists 1.55 GB of free disk space and a 64 MB DirectX 9.0-compatible video card. Those are historical requirements for the game’s era, not sensible limits for a current Windows 10 or 11 PC.

The official patch can be used alongside the utilities when its graphics-corruption case applies. It is not a substitute for any of them.
Prepare the game before changing anything
Back up the installation
Copy the entire game folder to a second location before adding files. Also back up your save-game directory. A backup gives you a clean rollback if a plug-in is incompatible with a particular release or if you want to compare the modified and unmodified game.
Identify the main directory
Use the folder that contains the game’s executable, usually gta-vc.exe. SilentPatch files, GInput files and the WidescreenFix files belong beside that executable, not in a separate downloads folder and not in the Windows system directory.

Exit the game and any launcher while copying files. Start with a clean boot of the classic executable so you know how the unmodified installation behaves at its native resolution and with keyboard controls.
Install the fixes in the recommended order
- Verify the legitimate classic copy. Confirm that the game starts before installing modifications. Record the current resolution, refresh rate and whether the original controls respond.
- Apply Rockstar’s 1.1 patch only if needed. If you see the graphics corruption covered by Rockstar’s patch documentation, apply that patch to the clean installation. It changes
GTA-VC.EXEto version 1.1. Do not install it merely because you want widescreen or a controller. - Install SilentPatch. Copy the SilentPatch files for the classic PC version into the main game directory. Include its DirectDraw component, as directed by Silent’s documentation. This is the layer that addresses modern Windows compatibility, crashes, DirectPlay dependence, video-memory detection and high-refresh-rate behavior.
- Install GInput. Place the GInput files in the same main directory. GInput is the important step for an Xbox-compatible or other XInput pad; it replaces DirectInput handling and exposes console-style controls and vibration.
- Install GTAVC.WidescreenFix. Copy
d3d8.dll,global.ini,GTAVC.WidescreenFix.asiandGTAVC.WidescreenFix.iniinto the game folder, as specified by the fix’s installation guide. The fix makes widescreen the default and corrects the unmodified mode’s crosshair and bullet-impact misalignment. - Launch and configure. Select your monitor’s resolution in the game’s display options, connect the controller, test every button and leave Frame Limiter enabled.
Keep a note of which files belong to which utility. If you later need to troubleshoot, remove or restore one layer at a time rather than deleting the entire installation blindly.
Set up a correct widescreen image
Choose the display resolution
Open the game’s video settings after installing the fix and select the monitor’s native or preferred resolution. A 16:9 display should no longer require a stretched 4:3 image or a manually forced aspect ratio. If the resolution list does not contain the mode you expect, close the game, confirm that the display driver is current, and check that the WidescreenFix files are beside the executable.

Why the fix matters
The original widescreen mode can draw the HUD and crosshair in the wrong positions. In practical play, the crosshair may not correspond to the point where bullets actually strike. GTAVC.WidescreenFix changes the presentation so the HUD scales with the wider image and the aiming indicator tracks the game’s hit location more accurately.

Check for a clean result
- Look at the radar, health and weapon indicators: they should stay anchored to the screen edges without appearing unusually stretched.
- Stand near a wall and fire at a visible point. The impact should line up with the crosshair rather than consistently landing to one side.
- Watch cut-scenes and menus for cropping. If only the menus look wrong, verify that every listed WidescreenFix file was copied, including both configuration files.
Make an Xbox or other XInput controller work
Use an XInput-capable pad
GInput is designed for modern Xbox-compatible and other XInput controllers. A generic USB gamepad that exposes only DirectInput may not receive the intended console-style mapping. Connect the controller to Windows first and verify that the operating system sees it as an XInput device.
Install and test GInput
- Close Vice City.
- Copy GInput into the same directory as
gta-vc.exe. - Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Start Vice City and open the control settings.
- Test movement, camera control, acceleration, braking, weapon selection, pause and the shoulder buttons.
- Test vibration if your controller supports it.
GInput automatically switches between keyboard/mouse and controller input, so you can use a mouse for menus and a pad for driving without changing a setting each time. Its documentation dates the release to September 29, 2019; the utility is separate from the later SilentPatch Build 12.1 update.
If the controls are mapped incorrectly
- Confirm that the GInput files are in the game directory, not one folder above it.
- Check Windows’ controller panel or the controller manufacturer’s utility to make sure the pad is identified as XInput.
- Disconnect additional gamepads and virtual-controller devices temporarily. Multiple devices can make the game select an unexpected input source.
- Restart the game after changing the controller connection. Automatic switching occurs while the game is running, but a restart removes ambiguity during diagnosis.
Do not disable Frame Limiter to solve an input problem. A controller mapping issue and an engine-timing issue are separate problems.
Keep Frame Limiter enabled
Vice City’s original engine was not designed around modern high-refresh displays. Silent’s documentation warns that high frame rates can produce incorrect car physics, altered gravity and sound problems. The practical setting is simple: leave the game’s Frame Limiter on after installing and testing the controller.
Temporarily turning the limiter off can help diagnose whether a symptom is timing-related, but it is not a safe permanent configuration. Vehicle speed, jumps, collision behavior and audio may all change when the game runs too quickly.

Fix slow performance, stutter or the wrong resolution
1. Update sound and video drivers first
Rockstar’s support article says, “During testing we did find that old Sound and Video card drivers are the main cause of the problem.” Install current drivers directly from the hardware manufacturers, reboot Windows, and test the game before changing several in-game options at once.
2. Use Rockstar’s diagnostic settings
If the game is still slow, Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance lists these temporary changes:
- Lower Draw Distance.
- Temporarily disable Frame Limiter to determine whether timing is involved, then turn it back on for normal play.
- Turn off subtitles.
- Turn off widescreen.
- Try 640×480 at 16-bit color.
- Set audio hardware to automatic detection.
- Disable Dynamic Acoustic Modelling.
These are diagnostic steps, not a recommendation to play permanently at a low resolution or without widescreen. Re-enable features one at a time after identifying the setting associated with the slowdown.
3. Reset cached settings after hardware changes
Vice City can retain settings from an earlier graphics or sound configuration. After replacing hardware or changing drivers, remove the documented cache and settings files as applicable: TXD.DIR, TXD.IMG, CAPS.DAT and GTA_VC.SET. Make a backup first, because deleting settings can return the game to defaults. Launch the game again and select the resolution and audio options from a clean configuration.
4. Separate the mod layers
If the game stops launching after the utilities are installed, restore the backed-up folder and add the components one at a time: SilentPatch first, then GInput, then WidescreenFix. This identifies whether the problem is a misplaced file, an incompatible executable or a controller/display configuration error. Do not assume that reinstalling the official 1.1 patch will repair a missing plug-in; the patch has a different purpose.

How much does each layer change the original game?
The bare install is the most faithful to the original PC behavior, but that includes its old display, input and compatibility limitations. Rockstar’s 1.1 patch makes only the documented graphics-corruption change and leaves the rest of the engine untouched. SilentPatch changes compatibility behavior while preserving the game’s content. GInput changes the input layer to match console-style controls and adds vibration that was absent from the PC release. WidescreenFix changes the way the image, HUD and aiming information are drawn so that a modern monitor does not expose the original’s alignment errors.

A modern machine exceeding them does not automatically avoid old-engine timing or compatibility faults, which is why SilentPatch and the Frame Limiter setting still matter.
The same manual refers to a USB or joystick-port gamepad. Today, the important distinction is not the connector but the input protocol. GInput is built for Xbox-compatible and other XInput devices; a pad that exposes only DirectInput may continue to show the original PC-style behavior. If you are buying a controller specifically for this setup, choose one advertised as XInput-compatible rather than assuming every USB pad will map correctly.
A repeatable first-launch checklist
- Start the clean game once and confirm that a save loads, the display appears and keyboard controls work.
- Close the game, install the selected utility, and start it again before adding the next layer.
- After WidescreenFix is installed, verify the radar, HUD edges and crosshair against a nearby wall.
- After GInput is installed, test both driving and on-foot controls, then check vibration.

Why is my Xbox controller detected but mapped like a keyboard?
The classic PC release uses DirectInput. Install GInput in the directory containing gta-vc.exe, confirm Windows sees the pad as XInput, disconnect extra virtual devices and restart the game.
