The simplest current way to play GTA: San Andreas is through Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Rockstar lists that collection for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It includes San Andreas alongside GTA III and Vice City. On mobile, availability and controller support depend on the current Android or iOS app, your device, and your operating-system version.
Use the instructions below for the platform you own, and make sure you are installing the same edition described in the store listing. The original Windows release and the Definitive Edition have different setup information and should not be treated as identical products.

Choose the right San Andreas release first
There are two materially different PC experiences to distinguish: the original Windows release and the newer Definitive Edition. Rockstar’s legacy PC manual documents the original game’s installation and controls, while the Definitive Edition has its own system-requirements and account requirements. Console listings covered by Rockstar are for the Definitive Edition trilogy.

The original PC release
The original Windows version follows the older installation and control instructions in Rockstar’s PC manual. Do not automatically apply the Definitive Edition’s account, internet, or hardware requirements to this older release; those requirements are published separately for the newer edition.

How to play GTA: San Andreas on PC
1. Decide between the original release and Definitive Edition
Start by deciding what you actually want to install. If you want the current multi-platform package, look for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and confirm that San Andreas is included. If you specifically want the original Windows release, make sure the product description and manual refer to that older version rather than the remastered collection.
This distinction matters because the controls, installation documentation, and technical prerequisites are not interchangeable. Rockstar describes the Definitive Edition as using modernized, GTA V-style controls and targeting, while the original PC manual describes the legacy release.
2. Check the Definitive Edition PC requirements before installing
For the Definitive Edition, compare your computer with Rockstar’s current published minimum and recommended specifications before purchase or installation. Use the live requirements page associated with the product listing because operating-system support and hardware guidance can change. Avoid assuming that a computer capable of running the original Windows game automatically meets the newer edition’s requirements.
Rank #2
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
The Definitive Edition also requires a Rockstar Games account and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. These conditions apply to the Definitive Edition support information; they should not be presented as universal requirements for the older release.
3. Install from the matching PC listing
- Open the PC storefront or the Rockstar Games Launcher listing for the edition you selected.
- Confirm that the product name, included games, and edition match your decision. The Definitive Edition should identify San Andreas as one of three included games.
- Install the launcher or storefront client requested by that listing, then sign in with the required account for the Definitive Edition.
- Allow the initial activation to complete while connected to the internet. Keep the connection available when the launcher performs entitlement verification.
- Launch San Andreas from the collection’s game menu rather than assuming a separate standalone purchase or shortcut is required.
4. Configure keyboard, mouse, or gamepad controls
A keyboard and mouse can be used on PC, and a compatible gamepad is another option. The available sources do not establish one input method as universally better, so choose according to how you play: keyboard and mouse provide direct access to many keys, while a gamepad may feel more natural for driving and analog movement.
Open the game’s controls or settings menu after the first launch. For the original release, consult the original PC manual for the legacy control layout. For the Definitive Edition, use its in-game prompts and settings; Rockstar identifies the release as having modernized controls and targeting. Do not copy a button map from a different edition or console and assume it will match your installation.

5. If the PC version will not launch
- Recheck the edition. A manual or support article for the original release will not document every Definitive Edition requirement.
- For the Definitive Edition, verify that the computer meets Rockstar’s current minimum requirements and that the launcher can reach the internet for activation or entitlement verification.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the purchase.
- Reconnect to the internet if activation or periodic verification fails, then restart the launcher and try again.
- If the game opens but controls are wrong, reset the in-game control profile and configure the keyboard, mouse, or gamepad from the correct edition’s settings menu.
How to play on PlayStation
PlayStation 5
Rockstar lists the Definitive Edition trilogy for PlayStation 5. In the console store, select the PS5 listing or the edition that explicitly provides the PS5 version for your region. Confirm that San Andreas is included in the three-game collection before completing the purchase or download.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
After installation, open the trilogy and choose San Andreas. Follow the button prompts shown on screen. Prompts can differ by platform and edition, so a control diagram copied from a PC, Xbox, or older PlayStation version may not match your game. Use the control settings menu to review or adjust the available layout.
PlayStation 4
The same collection is listed for PlayStation 4. Select the PS4-specific store route, install the collection, and launch San Andreas from its game selection screen. Keep the console generation in mind when checking the listing: the PS4 and PS5 products are related, but the store page for your hardware is the authoritative description of what you can download.
Use the on-screen prompts and the edition’s own control settings rather than assuming that every button performs the same action as in another release.
How to play on Xbox
Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar lists the Definitive Edition trilogy for Xbox Series X|S. Choose the current-generation Xbox listing, verify that San Andreas is one of the included games, and install the collection. Start San Andreas from the trilogy interface after installation.
Rank #4
The Definitive Edition uses modernized controls and targeting, but button prompts remain platform-specific. Follow the prompts displayed on your Xbox and review the control settings if you want to change the layout.
Xbox One
Xbox One is also listed as a supported platform for the trilogy. Select the Xbox One route that matches your region and console, then install and launch San Andreas through the collection. Do not rely on a Series X|S control guide when a prompt on your Xbox One shows a different button assignment.
How to play GTA: San Andreas on mobile
Check the current app listing first
Rockstar maintains mobile update notes for Android and iOS versions. Before installing, read the current app-store entry for your phone or tablet. Check the supported device, operating-system version, region, and whether the purchase is available to your account. Mobile availability can change independently of the console and PC listings.

iPhone and iPad operating-system support
Rockstar support lists iOS 17 or higher as the threshold for its titles to continue receiving updates and support, with the change dated August 18, 2026. This is a support and update threshold. It is not proof that every older device running an already-installed copy will immediately stop launching. An older installation may continue to work, but it may no longer receive the same updates or support treatment.
For a new installation, use an iPhone or iPad that meets the current app listing’s device and iOS requirements. If the store blocks installation, compare your device and operating-system version with that listing instead of relying on an older compatibility claim.
Android phones and tablets
Android compatibility is likewise device- and build-dependent. Read the current Google Play listing for the exact phone or tablet, Android version, region, and purchase eligibility. A game that was compatible with one Android device or an earlier app build is not automatically guaranteed to work on another model or a later build.

Rockstar’s mobile controller guidance describes USB devices and controllers supported by the phone, including PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 controllers when the particular phone and game combination supports them. This is general guidance rather than a guarantee for every current San Andreas mobile build, modern controller, adapter, or phone.
- Confirm in the current San Andreas app notes whether external controllers are supported for your operating system and build.
- Check the phone manufacturer’s documentation for supported USB or wireless controller connections.
- Pair or connect the controller before launching the game, then open the game’s control settings to see whether it is detected.
- If the controller is not recognized, test the phone’s connection with another supported app, remove conflicting Bluetooth pairings or adapters, and check for an app update.
- Keep touch controls available as a fallback; controller support can vary even when the game installs successfully.
Controls: what changes by edition and platform
The original Windows release and the Definitive Edition should each be configured from their own manuals or in-game menus. Rockstar describes the Definitive Edition as bringing GTA V-style controls and targeting, so its prompts and aiming behavior are not a reliable guide to the older PC version.
On PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, use the prompt displayed for the controller connected to that console. On PC, select keyboard and mouse or a compatible gamepad in the settings available to your edition. On mobile, touch input is built in, while external-controller behavior depends on both the phone and the current game build.
Which version should you choose?
Choose the Definitive Edition when
- You want to play on a current PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or supported PC platform.
- You want San Andreas together with GTA III and Vice City in one collection.
- You prefer the modernized control and targeting approach Rockstar describes for this edition.
- You can meet the published PC requirements and the account and internet conditions required for activation and entitlement verification.
Choose the original PC release when
- You specifically want the legacy Windows version documented by the original PC manual.
- You are prepared to follow its older installation and control instructions rather than the Definitive Edition’s setup guidance.
- You do not want to assume that newer account, network, or hardware requirements apply to an older release.
Choose mobile when
- You already have a compatible phone or tablet and prefer portable play.
- The current app-store listing accepts your device, operating-system version, region, and account.
- You are comfortable with touch controls or can verify controller support for your exact phone and app build.
Common problems and the safest fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The store does not show the game | Platform, region, or edition mismatch | Search the live listing for your exact console, PC storefront, or mobile device and confirm that San Andreas is included in the selected product. |
| PC activation fails | Definitive Edition account or internet requirement not met | Sign in to the required Rockstar Games account, restore the internet connection, and retry activation or entitlement verification. |
| The PC game runs poorly or will not install | Definitive Edition hardware requirements may not be met | Compare the computer with Rockstar’s current minimum and recommended specifications; do not substitute the original game’s requirements. |
| Buttons do not match a guide | Different edition or platform control layout | Use the prompts and control settings inside the installed edition. |
| A mobile controller is ignored | Phone, controller, adapter, or app-build incompatibility | Check current title notes and phone documentation, reconnect the supported device, and test touch controls. |
| An older iPhone or iPad stops receiving updates | Below the current iOS support threshold | Rockstar’s August 18, 2026 support note lists iOS 17 or higher for continued updates and support. Distinguish that threshold from whether an already-installed copy still launches. |
Before you buy or install: a final checklist
- Identify your exact platform generation: Windows PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Android, or iOS.
- Decide whether you want the original Windows release or the Definitive Edition.
- For the Definitive Edition, confirm that the listing includes all three games and San Andreas.
- On PC, compare your hardware with the current Definitive Edition requirements before installing.
- For the Definitive Edition on PC, prepare a Rockstar Games account and reliable internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification.
- On mobile, verify device, operating system, region, and current app-build eligibility.
- Choose keyboard and mouse, gamepad, console controller, or touch input according to the platform and your preference.
- Use only the controls and troubleshooting steps for the edition you actually installed.
Bottom line
For most players using current hardware, the practical route is the Definitive Edition trilogy: select the correct PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch listing, verify the included content, and configure controls from that edition’s own menus. The original Windows release needs its legacy manual and should not inherit newer requirements by assumption. Mobile play is viable only when the current app listing supports your device and operating system, and controller use must be verified for the exact phone and build.
