The most reliable way to play GTA Online with a chosen group is to create an Invite Only Session from Story Mode, then invite friends after the private session loads. On PC, friends who appear offline can usually connect by setting Presence Visibility to Everyone, retrying the invitation, or joining through a shared Crew. Private sessions still have activity limits: some Freemode Events need a minimum number of players, and Time Trials do not run in private or solo sessions.
What you need to know before inviting anyone
GTA Online has several ways to put players together, but the clearest route for a small group is an Invite Only Session. You create that session from Story Mode rather than from an already populated public lobby. The game leaves the current session and loads a new private one, so warn anyone who is currently playing with you before starting the process.

Once the private session is open, use the invitation controls shown by your game and platform to bring in friends. Menu screens and available invite commands are not identical on every platform, so do not assume that a PC instruction will have the same wording on a console. The Rockstar support procedure for fixing friends who appear offline is specifically documented for PC.

Create an Invite Only Session
Rockstar’s documented sequence, last updated May 26, 2026, starts in Story Mode. Use the labels exactly as they appear in the game:
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Navigate to the Online tab and select it.
- Scroll down to Find New Session and select it.
- Choose Invite Only Session.
GTA Online prompts you to leave the current session, then loads a new private session. Wait until your character has finished loading into that session before sending invitations. If you cancel the confirmation or choose another session type, you have not created the private lobby described here.
Why Story Mode matters
The documented path begins in Story Mode, not in the pause menu of an existing public lobby. If you are already in GTA Online and cannot find the Invite Only option, return to Story Mode first, then repeat the four-step sequence. This is a navigation requirement, not a separate subscription or Crew setting.

What “Invite Only” changes
Invite Only controls who can enter: people you invite can join, while random players are not automatically placed in the session. It is useful for coordinating missions, exploring, or talking without a public lobby full of unrelated players. It does not remove the normal rules of GTA Online activities. An event can still require more participants, and some activities are unavailable altogether.
Invite friends after the session loads
After the loading screen finishes, open the game’s online player or invitation controls and select the friends you want to bring into the session. The exact labels depend on the platform and current game interface, so follow the invite command presented in your version rather than looking for a universal button name.

Have each friend accept the invitation through the notification or invite screen they receive. If a friend does not see it, ask them to check the game’s online notifications and the platform’s own invite area. A friend may be signed in but still hidden from presence searches, which is especially relevant on PC.
Keep the two kinds of invitations separate

Joining a Crew is not a replacement for accepting a pending session invite. If your goal is to play immediately, accept the session invitation first. Use Crew membership when you want a persistent group or when the normal PC invite path cannot find your friend.
Use Crews to organize a regular group
Crews are useful when the same people play together repeatedly. Members can identify one another through the Crew roster, and Rockstar says Crews can connect members beyond the 250-person friend limit on a Rockstar Games account. That 250 figure is an account-friend maximum; it is not the number of people who can occupy one GTA Online lobby.
Accept a Crew invitation
- Open the My Crews page on your Rockstar Games account.
- Look for the pending invitation and accept it.
- If you do not see it immediately, check the Activity counter on the Rockstar Games account, where new invitations also appear.
After accepting, return to GTA Online and use the game’s Crew or player menus to locate members. Crew membership does not guarantee that every member is online or eligible to join a particular activity; it simply gives you an additional roster and join path.
PC route: join through Crew members
Rockstar’s PC support article gives a fallback when two players appear offline or cannot invite one another:

- Confirm that both players belong to the same Crew.
- In GTA Online, open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Online.
- Select Join Crew Members.
The same support instruction explicitly requires both players to be in the same Crew. If one person is only on your Rockstar friend list, this route may not work until that person joins the Crew.

PC alternative: join from the Crew member list
Rockstar also documents a direct roster method:
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Go to Online, then Crews.
- Open My Crews.
- Select View Members.
- Choose your friend and select Join Game.
This is an alternative to Join Crew Members, not an additional requirement. Try it when the first route does not show the friend or when you want to select a specific member from the roster.
Fix PC friends who appear offline
When two PC players can see one another as Offline and invitations fail, Rockstar recommends changing the account’s presence setting before trying the Crew routes.
- Open the Rockstar Games menu in GTA Online.
- Go to Game Settings.
- Set Presence Visibility to Everyone.
- Try the session invitation again.
Both players should check the setting if the problem affects invitations in both directions. After changing it, give the game a moment to refresh the online status, then resend the invite rather than relying on the original failed notification.
If the visibility change does not help
- Use Pause Menu > Online > Join Crew Members, but only if both players are in the same Crew.
- Use Pause Menu > Online > Crews > My Crews > View Members, select the friend, and choose Join Game.
- Confirm that the friend is actually in GTA Online and not still at a main menu, Story Mode, or a loading screen.
- Have the friend send a fresh invitation after you have changed Presence Visibility.
These steps address the specific PC “Offline” and failed-invite condition documented by Rockstar. They do not establish that every platform has the same presence setting or Crew menu.

What you can do in a private session
Invite Only does not mean every activity is available with any number of players. Rockstar’s Freemode Events information says that Freemode Events are available in private sessions, but many individual events require a minimum number of participants before they can begin.

If an event invitation or prompt never appears, check whether the event is eligible for a private session and whether enough players are present. Adding one friend may still be insufficient for an event with a higher minimum. The absence of a start prompt does not necessarily mean your private session is malfunctioning.
Planning a group activity
- Create the Invite Only Session and wait for everyone to load in.
- Check the activity’s participant requirement before launching it.
- Start the event only after the required number of players is present.
- If the activity is a Time Trial, move to a session type that supports it; adding more friends to a private session will not make it available.
Turn on voice chat when you need coordination
Rockstar’s title-update notes state that voice chat now defaults off on console platforms. Console players who want to coordinate in-game should check the setting instead of assuming their microphone is broken.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Voice Chat.
- Set Voice Chat Enabled to on.
The cited Rockstar note does not specify the current default for PC, so do not apply the console-default statement to PC. A headset with a microphone is optional hardware for voice coordination; Rockstar’s setting documentation does not require a particular accessory.
Common problems and the right response
“I cannot find Invite Only Session”
Return to Story Mode and follow Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session. The documented procedure starts there. Selecting a different item under Online will not create the same private lobby.

“My friend is online, but the invite does nothing”
On PC, set Presence Visibility to Everyone in the Rockstar Games menu’s Game Settings, then retry. If the friend still cannot be found, use one of the two Crew-based join routes and verify that both players share a Crew.
“Join Crew Members is unavailable or shows nobody”
This method depends on shared Crew membership. Confirm that both accounts are members of the same Crew, not merely friends on Rockstar Games. If they are, open My Crews > View Members and try Join Game on the friend’s entry.
“My friend never received the Crew invitation”
Tell the friend to open the My Crews page and check the Rockstar Games account Activity counter. Rockstar identifies both locations for new Crew invitations. A Crew invitation can be waiting there even when a game-session notification is not visible.
“The Freemode Event will not start”
Private sessions support Freemode Events, but individual events can require a minimum number of participants. Add enough players for that event, or choose another activity. Time Trials are excluded from private and solo sessions and will not become available by changing the invitation settings.
“We cannot hear one another on console”
Open Pause Menu > Settings > Voice Chat > Voice Chat Enabled and turn it on. Console voice chat defaults off according to Rockstar’s May 7, 2024 update notes.
Limits, platform differences, and freshness
Do not treat the 250-friend figure as a lobby-size specification. Rockstar describes it as the maximum number of friends on a Rockstar Games account and notes that Crews can connect members beyond that friend network. The number of players who can occupy a particular session is a separate game and platform matter and is not established by that account limit.
The private-session instructions were updated by Rockstar on May 26, 2026. The PC friend-joining workaround was last updated May 29, 2024; Crew invitation guidance and the account-friend figure were last updated May 20, 2024; Freemode Event details were last updated February 25, 2024; and the cited voice-chat notes were last updated May 7, 2024. Rockstar can change menu labels or platform behavior, so check the current support wording if an option has moved after a game update.
These procedures do not establish universal cross-platform play, identical invitation menus on every console and PC, territory-specific account requirements, or current retail editions. Use the controls shown by your own game and platform, and avoid assuming that a feature documented for PC is present elsewhere.
