The easiest current way to play Grand Theft Auto III is to buy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It bundles GTA III with Vice City and San Andreas, and is sold for Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. PC players can use Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher; console players use their platform’s digital store, with physical editions announced for Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation 4.
What you need to buy
Modern storefronts primarily sell GTA III as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, not as a separately listed new-generation product. The collection contains three complete games: GTA III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Buying the trilogy is therefore required for the current supported store route described by Rockstar’s product listings.

The collection is an updated version of the original trilogy. Rockstar describes enhanced lighting and environmental upgrades, high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, and modern controls based on the control approach used in Grand Theft Auto V. The changes are intended to make a 2001-era game easier to operate on current hardware, but they do not turn GTA III into a newly designed game.
| Platform | Current route | What you receive | Notable capability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher | Definitive Edition trilogy | Adjustable PC hardware settings; Steam lists Steam Deck compatibility |
| PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | Definitive Edition trilogy | Rockstar documents up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS |
| PlayStation 4 | PlayStation Store; physical edition announced | Definitive Edition trilogy | Runs the console edition supported by Rockstar |
| Xbox Series X|S | Microsoft Store; physical Xbox edition announced | Definitive Edition trilogy | Rockstar documents up to 4K/60 FPS on Xbox Series X |
| Xbox One | Microsoft Store; physical edition announced | Definitive Edition trilogy | Supported console version |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo eShop or announced physical release | Definitive Edition trilogy | Portable play and a cartridge option where stock is available |
Store prices, stock, patches, subscription arrangements, and regional availability can change. Check the store for your country and console before purchasing. A listing that appears in one territory may be absent, differently packaged, or sold by a different method elsewhere.

How to play GTA III on a Windows PC
Check the minimum hardware first
Steam’s published Windows requirements are the safest starting point for a PC purchase. They apply to the Steam version of the Definitive Edition and specify 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, 5 GB of available storage, and broadband internet. The minimum processor is an Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300. Minimum graphics hardware is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 with 2 GB of video memory or an AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB. A DirectX-compatible sound device is also listed.
Steam’s recommended specification raises memory to 16 GB and calls for an Intel Core i7-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor. The recommended graphics cards are an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 with 4 GB or an AMD Radeon RX 570 with 4 GB. These are published requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate on every computer. Laptop variants, thermal limits, background applications, drivers, and display resolution can affect the result.
| Component | Minimum listed by Steam | Recommended listed by Steam |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (2 GB) or AMD Radeon R9 280 (3 GB) | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 570 (4 GB) |
| Storage | 5 GB available | not separately stated in the cited Steam specification |
| Audio | DirectX-compatible sound | not separately stated |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
Having exactly 5 GB free can be risky because Windows, the launcher, updates, and temporary installation files also need working space. Keep additional free capacity even though Steam’s published game requirement is 5 GB.
Install through Steam
- Install the Steam client on a 64-bit Windows 10 PC and sign in to your Steam account.
- Find Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition within the trilogy listing. Confirm that the product description identifies the Definitive Edition rather than assuming a separate classic release.
- Complete the purchase and choose Install. Select a library drive with at least the listed 5 GB free, plus room for temporary files and updates.
- Allow Steam to download the game while connected to broadband internet. Do not interrupt the process if the Rockstar authentication component opens.
- When prompted, sign in to or create the required third-party Rockstar Games Social Club account. Steam states that this account is required.
- Launch the game from Steam. On first run, allow the Rockstar launcher and the game to complete entitlement checks while the PC is online.
- Open the game’s graphics and control menus, choose your display resolution and input device, and start GTA III from the trilogy’s game selection screen.
The Steam listing gives the Definitive Edition a January 19, 2023 release date on that storefront. That date identifies the Steam release of the updated edition, not the original game’s launch.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.

Install through the Rockstar Games Launcher
- Install the Rockstar Games Launcher for Windows and sign in with the Rockstar account that owns the trilogy.
- Open your library and select Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Choose the installation location and verify that the drive has the required free space and that Windows meets the listed 64-bit requirement.
- Start the download over broadband internet. Keep the launcher open until installation and ownership verification finish.
- Start the trilogy from the launcher, select GTA III, and configure graphics, audio, and controls before beginning a new game.
The launcher route avoids Steam’s storefront but does not remove the need for Rockstar account authentication. Keep the account email and password available, especially when installing on a new computer or after changing Windows users.
Use it on Steam Deck
Steam marks the game as compatible with Steam Deck. That designation means the storefront recognizes Deck support; it is not a promise that every user will see identical battery life, frame pacing, or control behavior. Install it from your Steam library, let the Deck complete its compatibility configuration, and test the built-in controls before changing to an external controller. If a launcher sign-in appears, complete it with an internet connection.
How to play GTA III on PlayStation
PlayStation 5
- Open the PlayStation Store on the PS5 and search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Confirm that GTA III is included in the bundle before buying; the store product is the three-game collection.
- Purchase and download the collection, then wait for the console’s installation to complete.
- Open the trilogy, choose GTA III, and select a performance or display option if the game presents one on your system.
Rockstar lists PS5 as a supported platform and documents up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS for PS5. “Up to” describes the platform feature ceiling; actual output can vary with the selected mode, display, scene, and other technical conditions. The PS5 version is the most direct console route if you want the documented high-resolution, high-frame-rate feature.

The PS4 version is sold through the PlayStation Store, and Rockstar announced a physical PlayStation 4 edition. The same trilogy-bundle rule applies: a PS4 buyer receives GTA III together with Vice City and San Andreas, rather than a separately packaged modern GTA III product. For a disc purchase, verify the regional edition and whether the included code or disc requires an internet download before relying on offline installation.

- UK version, region-free, fully compatible with all Nintendo Switch consoles worldwide
How to play GTA III on Xbox
Xbox Series X and Series S
- Open the Microsoft Store on the Xbox console and search for the Definitive Edition trilogy.
- Read the product details to confirm that GTA III is part of the collection.
- Buy and install the bundle, then launch it from your Xbox library.
- Select GTA III from the trilogy menu and adjust display and control options.
Rockstar supports Xbox Series X|S and documents up to 4K at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X. The stated 4K/60 feature applies specifically to Series X; do not transfer that specification automatically to Series S or Xbox One. A physical Xbox edition was announced, but availability and packaging depend on territory and retailer stock.
Xbox One
Xbox One is listed as a supported platform. Use the Microsoft Store for the digital version or look for the announced physical Xbox edition. Download time depends on your connection and the console’s available space. If the store offers multiple editions, choose the one explicitly labeled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition so you do not mistake a soundtrack, add-on, or unrelated listing for the game collection.
How to play GTA III on Nintendo Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch and search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Check the listing’s country, language, storage, and account requirements, then purchase and download it if the digital version suits you.
- Alternatively, look for the announced physical Switch edition. Confirm that the cartridge and any required download are compatible with your region and console.
- Install any update offered by the Switch, launch the collection, and choose GTA III from its game menu.
Switch is the clearest choice for a physical, portable version because Rockstar announced a Switch release in addition to the digital listing. It is still a three-game bundle, not a standalone GTA III cartridge. Physical stock can disappear or vary by country, so verify the exact product and seller before paying.

What changes in the Definitive Edition
The Definitive Edition keeps the original trilogy’s games and story content while updating presentation and controls for current systems. Rockstar highlights:
Rank #4
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
- Modern controls modeled on the control approach used in Grand Theft Auto V.
- Enhanced lighting and environmental upgrades.
- Higher-resolution textures.
- Increased draw distances, so more of the environment can remain visible farther from the player.
- Platform-specific presentation features, including up to 4K and 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- NVIDIA DLSS support on PC, where compatible NVIDIA hardware and the relevant software settings are available.
These changes explain why the Definitive Edition is the practical modern-store recommendation: it has a current launcher or console installation path and controls designed for newer hardware. They also mean it is not a pixel-for-pixel presentation of the 2001 original.
Definitive Edition or the classic PC release?
There are two useful ways to frame the choice: convenience versus historical fidelity, and flexibility versus simplicity.
| Consideration | Definitive Edition | Classic PC release |
|---|---|---|
| Current store route | Officially listed for modern PC and console platforms as part of the trilogy | A separately sold current standalone edition is not established by the available first-party information for every region |
| Controls | Modernized controls | Original-era control design |
| Presentation | Updated lighting, textures, environments, and draw distances | 2001-era presentation |
| Hardware choice | PC settings, console modes, and Steam Deck compatibility | Depends on locating and supporting an older PC release |
| Bundle contents | GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas | Historically documented as GTA III itself |
Steam Support documents the original PC release date as May 21, 2002. That is a historical date, not evidence that a standalone classic copy is currently sold in every storefront or territory. If preserving the original look and behavior matters more than a supported modern installation, investigate the legal availability of an older copy in your own region; do not assume an old key, disc, or download will activate everywhere today.

Choose PC when you want hardware flexibility
PC is the most adjustable option. You can select Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher, use a monitor or television, change graphics settings, and play on a Steam Deck. It is also the platform with the clearest published hardware checklist. The trade-off is setup: Windows compatibility, driver behavior, launcher authentication, and a Rockstar Social Club account all matter.
Best Value
- Three iconic cities, three epic stories. Play the genre-defining classics of the original Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas updated for a new generation.
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the centre of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, , and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s.
Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X for the strongest documented console output
PS5 and Xbox Series X are the platforms for which Rockstar explicitly documents up to 4K at 60 FPS. They offer a straightforward store-and-play process without a PC graphics card decision. Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PS4 remain supported, but the cited 4K/60 statement should not be generalized to those systems.
Choose Switch for portability or a cartridge
Switch is the natural fit if you want to play away from a television or prefer a physical product. The announced cartridge route is a concrete alternative to a digital-only purchase, but check whether your copy requires additional downloads and whether stock exists in your country.
Common installation problems and fixes
The installer says there is not enough space
- Compare the drive’s free capacity with Steam’s 5 GB game requirement.
- Close other installers and remove unneeded downloads or temporary files.
- Leave extra room for launcher data, updates, and Windows temporary files rather than stopping at exactly 5 GB.
- Restart the installation after selecting a drive with sufficient free space.
The game will not authenticate
- Confirm that Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher is signed in to the account that owns the trilogy.
- Use the required Rockstar Games Social Club account for the Steam edition.
- Reconnect broadband internet and retry the entitlement check.
- Do not repeatedly create new accounts; that can make it difficult to identify which account owns the license.
The launcher opens but the game does not start
- Allow the launcher and game to finish pending updates.
- Restart Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher, then try again while online.
- Check that the PC is running 64-bit Windows 10 and that the processor, memory, and graphics hardware meet at least the published minimums.
- Close demanding background applications and retry before changing advanced graphics options.
Performance is poor on PC
- Compare your system with the recommended, not merely minimum, specification: 16 GB RAM, an i7-6600K or Ryzen 5 2600-class processor, and a GTX 970 or RX 570-class graphics card are the listed targets.
- Lower resolution or demanding visual options in the game’s settings.
- On compatible NVIDIA hardware, check whether the PC build exposes DLSS and whether enabling it improves your result.
- Make sure the laptop is connected to power and using its high-performance graphics processor rather than an integrated chip.
A physical console copy is unavailable
Physical editions were announced for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation 4, but stock is regional and time-sensitive. Search by the full trilogy name, check the platform printed on the box, and confirm whether the product is new, used, or a code-only package. If no legitimate physical copy is available, use the relevant digital store instead.
Do you need to buy the whole trilogy?
For the modern platform route covered here, yes: GTA III is included in the Definitive Edition trilogy. The bundle also supplies Vice City and San Andreas, so the purchase makes sense if you want the complete trilogy or prefer the only broadly documented current storefront path. It is not accurate to describe the modern product as a standalone GTA III release.
A quick decision checklist
- Windows PC: verify 64-bit Windows 10, at least 8 GB RAM, 5 GB available storage, the listed CPU and GPU minimums, broadband internet, and a Rockstar account.
- Steam Deck: use the Steam listing, install from your library, and complete Rockstar authentication when requested.
- PS5: buy the trilogy from PlayStation Store if you want the documented up-to-4K/60 console feature.
- PS4: use the PlayStation Store or locate the announced physical edition.
- Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: use Microsoft Store; Series X has the documented up-to-4K/60 feature.
- Nintendo Switch: choose eShop or the announced cartridge release for portable play.
- Any platform: confirm your country’s price, stock, edition, storage needs, and update requirements immediately before purchase.
Bottom line
For most readers, buy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on the platform you already own. Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher is the simplest PC route if your Windows machine meets Steam’s requirements; PS5 and Xbox Series X offer the highest documented console resolution and frame-rate targets; and Switch is the practical choice for portable or cartridge-based play. The original PC version remains historically important, with a May 21, 2002 release date, but current first-party information does not establish a universally available standalone classic listing. Expect to purchase the trilogy, not GTA III alone.
